After 4 years and 6 seasons, the show comes to a close
‘The Hills’ Is Dunzo . . . For ‘Real’!

Well … that’s it, the end, fini, over … dunzo! The Hills, the reality TV series that was spun off of the original MTV series Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, came to an end last night as the series finale episode aired on MTV. For the past 4 years, The Hills has provided some of the most significant pop culture moments of celebrity/reality TV hybrid programming and provided us with hours of extremely addictive if primarily vapid entertainment. Whether you love the show, hate the show, love to hate the show or whatever … you cannot deny the impact of The Hills. I’ve been with these characters since Laguna Beach debuted back in 2004 and despite some waning excitement over the years, I’ve watched every single episode and for the most part loved the series overall. Here are some photos from last night’s red carpet arrivals at the The Hills Live: A Hollywood Ending afterparty which was held at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, CA:

“The Hills,” the landmark reality soap that cemented Lauren Conrad, Heidi Montag and their pals as tabloid superstarlets, died Tuesday at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. It was 4. The popular series’ cause of death wasn’t provided, but MTV president of programming Tony DiSanto previously called it “an organic culmination of this saga.” “I’m oddly devastated that it’s come to an end,” said Ben “B-Side” Mandelker, who blogs about “The Hills” and its New York-set offspring “The City” on bsideblog.com. “My five-year goal was to appear as a sidekick on the show, ideally with a subtitle that defines me solely as the friend of someone else. Sadly, that dream never came to fruition.” After 102 installments, “The Hills” faded into the sunset Tuesday with a goodbye gala attended by the show’s cast and a wink, wink twist ending in the final episode that had friends-with-benefits Kristin Cavallari and Brody Jenner seemingly saying goodbye in front of the Hollywood sign, then appearing in front of a backdrop on the Paramount Studios’ lot. “With ‘The Hills’ off the air, I no longer have to field questions about the show’s authenticity,” said Mandelker. “I can think of about 10 different things I’d rather do than engage in yet another dumb argument about whether or not ‘The Hills’ is staged. I just tell people it’s like professional wrestling: Don’t take it so seriously, and enjoy the ride.” The club-hopping, music-pumping, cat-fighting, mascara-dripping, mouth-dropping, crystal-worshipping drama of “The Hills” debuted in 2006 as a spin-off of MTV’s popular high school reality docudrama “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County.” The series originally documented the journey of bubbly “Laguna Beach” graduate Conrad to Los Angeles. As the show progressed, “The Hills” morphed from a coming-of-age story centering on the budding fashion designer to a splashy soap focusing on a bevy of beautiful people. Andy Dehnart, who has blogged about reality TV for more than 10 years at realityblurred.com, said the series’ lush cinematography and phony authenticity left a lasting impression on the medium. “The legacy of ‘The Hills’ is that it improved the visual language of reality TV while proving that a series could be sustained in an M.C. Escher-like circle where tabloid coverage of the cast members sustained interest in a narrative that largely ignored their real lives, including the intense media coverage that generated interest in the show,” said Dehnart … Throughout its tumultuous six seasons, tabloids and blogs were enamored with the show’s never-ending series of breakups, make-ups and fall-outs, most notably the epic divide between best friends Montag and Conrad, who left “The Hills” in the middle of the fifth season and was replaced by her sassy, raspy “Laguna Beach” adversary Cavallari. The transition from Conrad to Cavallari as the series’ narrator and Montag’s marriage to bad boy Spencer Pratt — the real wedding, not the phony Mexican one — marked the beginning of the end of “The Hills.” Villainous couple Pratt and Montag, who underwent 10 plastic surgery procedures earlier this year, were later phased out of the final season.

It’s amazing to me that a show like The Hills managed to not only define its own section of pop culture but it also managed to create its own mythology that actually took on a life of its own. Despite the fact that Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt annoyed the hell out of me for the duration of their time on the show, I was a bit sad that the villainous Speidi were not included at all in last night’s finale. They had a huge hand in how the show turned out (for better or worse) and that could’ve been mentioned at the very least. THO, Spencer Pratt did manage to crash the afterparty last night … he showed up lookin’ crazy and deranged, which is exactly what you would expect from a guy like Spencer Pratt. After the jump, check out a few more photos including a cute cast photo from the party and some disturbing photos of Spencer

Jay-Z gets the party started
Coachella Day 1: Surprise B-Jay

The 2010 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival officially got underway at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA yesterday with an opening day line-up that included — among many others — She & Him (made up of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), Them Crooked Vultures, Public Image Ltd., Street Sweeper Social Club (who opened for Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction last year) and Jay-Z. Because the erupting volcano in Iceland has forced the cancellation of air travel in Europe, a few bands were unable to make their way to California this weekend to take the stage at Coachella … but by pretty much all accounts, this year’s fest got off to a pretty fantastic start. Here are some photos of some of her performers who played yesterday on Day 1 and some deets about what went down in Indio:

Jay-Z brought his arena-sized stage show — complete with a guest spot by Beyonce — to the California desert Friday night (April 16), capping off the triumphant first day of the 11th annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival with a rapid succession of more than a decade’s worth of hip hop hits delivered with his trademark braggadocio. The rapper’s show, a celebration of ambition and triumph against long odds, was the perfect coda for an event that has has become one of the most respected – and successful – music festivals in the world. But from the cosmic hipster disco of LCD Soundsystem and the timeless ska-punk of The Specials to deadmau5′s triptastic dance spectacular to Calle 13′s salsa-hop, it was a day for dancing at the Empire Polo Fields, and even the unfortunate news that some European bands, like Friday’s The Cribs, would miss their spots due to travel disruptions from the Icelandic volcano eruption could ruin the good mood of the capacity crowd of 75,000. As Jay-Z breezed and thumped his way through a set that touched on the breadth of his career, anticipation for a surprise guest, one of the festival’s hallmarks, settled over the crowd. The rumoured collaboration by Dr. Dre turned out to be a false starter, but Jay-Z brought his wife Beyonce to the stage and together, the royal hip hop pair sharing a moment of public sweetness with the duet “Forever Young.” The visual component of Jay-Z’s performance made frequent obvious references to current issues, including a scrolling stock ticker and a short video clip of President Obama brushing off his shoulders, a now infamous public reference to the fact that his music has broken yet another barrier: it is listened to in the White House. New York, if not Brooklyn, was a recurring theme among the main stage headliners. Both Jay-Z and LCD Soundsystem, who each claim neighboring parts of Brooklyn as their home, led rousing singalongs of their odes to their hometowns. Before Jay-Z led an oceanic “Empire State of Mind,” James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem insisted that he close his band’s monstrous set with “New York, I Love You (But You’re Bringing Me Down),” a moment that felt provocative as one of the day’s only unavoidably meloncholic songs. Jay-Z also took time from his set to acknowledged other Brooklyn-based bands performing during the festival’s first day, including Passion Pit, Grizzly Bear and Yeasayer.

Each year it seems like Coachella gets bigger and bigger … and while it is up to the individual to determine if bigger means better, there is no question that the ever-growing music festival continues to draw huge audiences. I believe Coachella sold out really early this year, even after a change was made in ticket sales that insisted that attendees buy access to all 3 days (rather than in previous years where you could buy tickets for individual days if you so desired). After the jump, check out some photos of some of the celebs who showed up in the crowd at Coachella yesterday to partake of the annual event …

Olivia's out? Roxy & Samantha are in!
MTV Hires New Friends For Whitney Port To Play With On ‘The City’

According to the New York Post, Olivia Palmero, one of Whitney Port‘s hired friends on the first season of The City, is getting axed from season two of the show and is being replaced by two new hired friends who were cast to play “vixens” on the show. Whitney was spotted in the company of her new friends/castmates as the ladies filmed new scenes for The City in NYC this week … say hello to Roxy and Samantha:

Olivia Palermo, MTV thinks you’re boring. Whitney Port will be toting two new accessories for her second time around “The City,” and they come in the form of Roxy and Samantha. Palermo, who was Port’s leading frenemy last season, reportedly cannot be filmed “going wild” now that the socialite has jumped ship from Diane von Furstenberg to Elle magazine. With Palermo out of the picture, MTV decided to hire introduce Port to two new BFFs – both who, also reportedly, fit their needed party girl shoes, true to size.

I’m really hoping that Olivia isn’t cut from the series altogether … that these new ladies have been added to the cast to augment the cast we already know. I suppose it shouldn’t come as too big a surprise that The City is becoming as contrived as The Hills. I actually liked that there was still the mystique of reality on the first season of The City … I fear that mystique will be gone soon enough. Whitney‘s new friends look vixen-y enough for me in these pics … Samantha looks like she could be a total beyotch (or, mebbe she was just photographed mid-blink). Whatever the case, we’ll be seeing these folks in action on MTV soon enough. Excited?

Here we go again
Filming Begins On Season 2 Of ‘The City’

Earlier today we learned the AMAZING news that Laguna Beach alum Kristin Cavallari will be taking over the star position on the next season of The Hills (since Lauren LC Conrad has announced that she is going into Reality TV retirement) and now we get to see a few photos from the East Coast where the second season of The City has started up production. Here are a few photos of Whitney Port and Olivia Palmero (who had a bit of wonky eye action going on) shooting one of their famous cafe scenes for the show:

A little bird told me that things may change DRASTICALLY on the second season of the show. I’m hearing that Whitney may be getting a new job … at a magazine … which would make The City even more like The Hills (as you may recall, the first few seasons of The Hills centered around work at Teen Vogue magazine). Also, I believe they may be introducing a new love interest. HMMMM. I still like watching The City … but I prolly won’t love it as much as I’ll love the Cavallari-centered new version of The Hills. Wee!! I feel like a 16 year old girl again … er … I mean not again … oh, you know what I mean :)

LC reveals the source of the erroneous sex tape rumor
‘The Hills’ Do The Paley Fest

Lauren LC Conrad and her Hills cohorts Lauren Lo Bosworth, Audrina Patridge and break-out spin-off star Whitney Port (of The City) were all on hand at the ArcLight Cinema in Hollywood, CA last night to participate in the PaleyFest ’09 event for The Paley Center for Media. Sadly, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were not in attendance even tho they were scheduled to appear. It is being reported that Speidi pulled out at the last minute to tend to their upcoming wedding plans. Interestingly enough, LC confirmed at the PaleyFest panel that Spencer admits that he is responsible for spreading the false rumor about her alleged sex tape with ex-boyfriend Jason Whaler … mebbe that revelation also had something to do with Speidi‘s absence? In any event, here are a few photos of the Hills girls on the red carpet last night and some deets about the event itself:

Attending The Hills panel at PaleyFest without being a regular viewer of The Hills is like going to a Friday night party at some condo off Sunset where everybody knows each other and nobody knows you. So you stand there amid an attractive crowd and nod and smile and pretend like you get their jokes. Helpfully, before the panel the producers screen a 20-minute compilation of clips from The Hills that summarizes the first five seasons of the hit MTV docu-soap. The clips are either perfectly edited, or the series has incredible amounts of filler because when the lights come up you feel like you just sat through every single episode and understand everything that’s happened: A blonde girl named Lauren moved to Hollywood and fell in love with another blonde girl named Heidi. They broke up when Heidi fell in love with a blond guy named Spencer. Each season the girls wore more obvious makeup and Lauren cries a lot. Oh, and at one point Lauren went to France. But when the cast comes onstage there’s a glaring omission. Heidi, who was billed to be onstage with Lauren, is not here. This is a considerable letdown, even for those of us who just started watching The Hills roughly 20 minutes ago. We’re told she’s planning for a “big event” this weekend, which is rumored to be her wedding to Spencer. Needless to say, The Hills cameras will be there, and three cast members say they are invited, none of which are Lauren. The biggest news bits from the Q&A:

– On the infamous sex tape rumor, Lauren says – spoiler alert — Spencer finally confesses to the crime in a future episode. “We actually have it on tape,” she said. “He takes responsibility and apologizes for it.”

– Lauren originally thought when switching from Laguna Beach to The Hills: “This will be a whole new group of friends I wouldn’t fight with,” which seems to not quite understand the type of show she’s on.

– Producer Liz Gateley, when asked about whether the cast is shallow, reveals, “These folks do talk about a lot of intelligent things — like global warming — we just don’t show that on the show.” The idea that Lauren and Audrina have been secretly having off-camera debates about carbon emissions is fascinating.

– Lauren said she and Heidi can now “be in the same room.” The Rolling Stone photo shoot last year was “a big deal” in terms of mending their relationship despite the girls having dividers between them while getting their hair and makeup done.

– Producers were asked if the show will continue beyond the fifth season and gave the usual “we’re in talks … seeing if there are more stories to tell,” etc., etc., answer.

HMMM … I don’t think there was anyone who seriously doubted that it was Spencer who came up with the sex tape rumor, I mean … c’mon. The fact that he finally admits it on camera should come as no shock to anyone. Since this is the “last” season of The Hills, they have to pull out all the stops … the sex tape thing is one big loose end that was never tied up and the Speidi wedding is another. It really sounds like LC is done with the show … which means that any attempts to keep it going without her are going to be really bad, I think. Laguna Beach didn’t really fare so well once she left the show … and when they moved the drama to Newport Beach (introducing a new cast of characters) the whole thing went into the toilet. If MTV is smart, they’ll just let the show end on a relative high note.

But that doesn’t mean they may not try to launch a new show around Heidi and Spencer. It remains to be seen if those two can carry a show all by themselves but, I’m telling you, they’re gonna try. First, tho, they’ve got a little wedding to get thru … let’s see if they can pull that off before they think about launching their own TV show. Do you think they’ll be able to carry a show on their own? Would you tune in?

Dates Brian, hilarity ensues
Lauren ‘LC’ Conrad Does ‘Family Guy’

People magazine brings us our first look at Lauren LC Conrad as her animated self as she will appear on an upcoming episode of Family Guy. According to Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, LC dates Brian the dog for an episode … but that is all he is willing to divulge just yet about the episode plotline:

Lauren Conrad has had her share of romantic escapades on her various MTV series – but now her love life is going to the dogs. In the May 3 episode of FOX’s hit comedy Family Guy, an animated Conrad gets tangled in a romantic web of Brian the dog’s making. PEOPLE.com has a first look at Conrad’s character posing with Brian and Stewie in a take on an iconic Hills shot of Conrad, Audrina Patridge and Lauren “Lo” Bosworth. “She dates Brian for an episode,” show creator Seth MacFarlane tells PEOPLE of Conrad’s guest-voice stint, where Brian goes out with her to disguise the true object of his affection. When asked if it ends happily or badly for the pair, MacFarlane says, “I’m not going to spoil it!”

Ha! You gotta love that LC decided to lend her voice to this ep of Family Guy. Because she is cooperating, I doubt that they will lampoon her too harshly … tho, I’m sure the same cannot be said for her Hills cohorts/foils Heidi Montage and Spencer Pratt. Also, you will note that Audrina was replaced in the photo above with Brian, the dog. See, the jokes just write themselves. What do y’all think … will LC be a welcome addition to the show or not?

Filming of 'The City' must be back in production
Whitney Port & Jay Lyon Back Together?

Last month we learned that the romance between Whitney Port and Jay Lyon, which was an integral focal point of the first season of MTV‘s The City, had come to an end and it was rumored that Whitney had moved on to canoodle with Lipstick Jungle‘s Robert Buckley. It turns out that the break-up of Whitney and Jay may have been resolved cuz the pair were spotted enjoying some alone time in NYC earlier this week. Is true love back in effect for the pair?

Yeah, I’m not sure it’s so much a matter of true love back in bloom so much as it’s a harbinger that the second season of The City is about to go into production. Personally, I’m so over Jay … I think it would be ACE if Whitney found herself a new dude to fake love on the show. I understand Robert Buckley is lookin’ for work … can someone at MTV make that happen please?

"I haven't read the books, but ... I thought the movie was really bad."
Whitney Port Hates The ‘Twilight’ Movie

Oh snap! Whitney Port, star of MTV‘s reality TV series The City, has gone on the record with MTV News to reveal that she thinks the Twilight movie is “really bad”. Despite the fact that she hasn’t read the books, Whitney says that neither the movie nor the actors impressed her very much. She even went so far as to call actress Kristen Stewart (who plays Twilight protagonist Bella Swan) “one-dimensional” … Oh, no she didn’t! Read below to find out what other blasphemies Whitney deigned to utter about the vampire flick:

It seems like these days everyone has caught “Twilight” fever — even celebrities like Ashley Tisdale and Ryan Reynolds admit to being fans of the teen vampire saga. But, there’s one celebrity who isn’t buying into it — and she knows a thing or two about drama. Former “The Hills” and now “The City” star Whitney Port admitted to MTV News that, despite seeing the movie, she has yet to figure out just what the big deal is surrounding “Twilight.” “I haven’t read the books, but I saw the movie,” she said. “I thought the movie was really bad. I love whatever his name is … Robert [Pattinson]. I think he’s so good-looking and handsome. I haven’t met him.” Although Whitney has love for Robert, she has more lukewarm feelings for his “Twilight” co-star, Kristen Stewart. “She’s OK. She seems so serious, like she’s so one-dimensional,” she said. “I think [Stewart and Pattinson] have good chemistry … I just didn’t think the acting was so good.” With all that in mind, it seems that everyone in Hollywood — no matter how they feel about “Twilight” — has auditioned for a part in one of the upcoming sequels. It begs the question: Is Whitney looking to audition? “I’m not really so much of an actress. I didn’t do this to do acting,” she said.

LMAO!!!! Clearly, Whitney is not courting the rabid Twilight fanbase with her comments … I mean, even if you really didn’t like the film is it really smart to say so? I suppose the girl deserves credit for her honesty but if I were her, I’d watch my back. Twilighters are a fervently devoted group of folks … she’d be wise to steer clear of any Twilight fan for the foreseeable future. Whitney‘s comments are even more telling when you hear them come from her mouth. After the jump, watch video of Whitney‘s anti-Twilight comments for yourself …

Um, can you blame her?
Whitney Port Hooking Up With Robert Buckley?

Well, well, well, well … it looks like Whitney Port, from MTV‘s The Hills & The City, broke up with her boyfriend Jay Lyon just in time to catch a bigger (and much, much hotter) fish. Life & Style magazine is reporting that Whitney and Lipstick Jungle hottie Robert Buckley were spied lookin’ pretty cozy in Miami, FL where the pair were playing co-hosts at the Havaianas Spring Break event at the Shore Club on Wednesday. HMMM. Considering what a hawt piece of man Robert Buckley is, I can’t say that I can blame Whitney for going for it ;) Here is a pic of the pair together in Mimai and the L&S report on their supposed hook-up:

It looks like Whitney Port isn’t wasting any time getting over ex-boyfriend Jay Lyon! Sparks are already flying between The City’s Whitney and Lipstick Jungle actor Robert Buckley, an insider tells Life & Style. The duo were both in Miami to host the Havaianas Spring Break event at the Shore Club on March 18. “Whitney and Rob hung out together all day. They were even holding hands!” an insider tells Life & Style. “There was definitely something in the air!” But the passion really ignited at dinner later that night. “Whitney and Rob joined about 10 of their friends for dinner at Nobu. They got quite cozy and started making out like crazy!” the insider reveals. To cap off the sultry evening, the two partied the night away! “They hit the town together after dinner.” says the insider. Juicy new romance or a spring fling? Only time will tell…

You know, if this report is true and something does come from this Spring fling … then Whitney Port is one lucky girl. Robert Buckley is a total cutie and, from what I understand, a really cool guy. I’m not sure I totally believe the details of this report but, again, I can’t say that I would blame Whitney one bit for trying to get into Robert‘s pants. Wouldn’t it be great if Robert started showing up on The City? OMG! Olivia Palmero would DIE! OK, mebbe not … the show might be beneath him … buy any Robert Buckley is more than welcome as far as I’m concerned. My gut tells me that these two are not and will not become an item … which is deffo a loss for Whitney. What do y’all think … do you like these two together?

'The City' spoiler alert warning?
Whitney Port & Jay Lyon Are Dunzo!

Altho the season finale of MTV‘s The City doesn’t air until later on tonight, In Touch Weekly magazine is providing a bit of a spoiler for the show that might not even air on tonight’s episode. Because reality and “reality TV” have a funny way of intersecting, this news might prove spoilerish for upcoming eps of the show but because life waits for no TV show, I suppose it’s worth reporting now … Whitney Port and her NYC paramour Jay Lyon are dunzo!

“The City’s” Whitney Port and her reality show boyfriend, Jay Lyon, have called it quits, a friend of Whitney’s reveals to In Touch. “They broke up on Monday,” said the friend. “Whitney did it over the phone, she was basically just not happy for a while and decided she really wanted to end it. Jay said they should talk things over, but it seems her mind is made up.” The couple agreed to take a break while Jay toured with his band Tamarama, as shown in this week’s episode, but later reconciled. “The episode that aired on Monday was filmed over a month ago. They got back together after that, but now Whitney has dumped him for good,” says the friend. The couple met and began dating last summer when Whitney began filming MTV’s “The City” and moved to Manhattan. They had been dating ever since. “There was no cheating or anything like that, she’s just finally fed up,” the friend says. “She asked her close friends for advice and thinks it’s best her and Jay both go their separate ways. He’s not going to change and she’s just sick of it.”

To be honest, I have a very hard time believing any showmance that is heavily featured on reality TV is actually real (consider Lauren LC Conrad was “dating” Doug Reinhardt on The Hills but was really dating actor Kyle Howard off screen) so this news of Whitney and Jay‘s dunzoness doesn’t really smack of any sort of, well, reality. We know that The City was picked up for a second season and perhaps producers thought it would behoove the series to have Whitney a single lady in the city so that they can exploit Sex and the City-like scenarios in upcoming new eps of the show. To be honest, I was never a Jay fan and I’m glad to see him go. Real or not, I’m looking forward to seeing Whitney unattached and let loose on the town. Methinks her singlehood will make for much more entertaining TV to come.
