Nine Inch Nails ‘Wave Goodbye’ To Terminal 5, NYC

Last night I attended the third NYC show of the final leg of the Nine Inch Nails tour Wave Goodbye. Last Saturday night’s performance took place at the Bowery Ballroom and Sunday night’s performance took place at Webster Hall … last night’s venue was Terminal 5:

In addition to an amazing setlist performed with intense precision by Nine Inch Nails, Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy was brought out on stage to duet with the band on 3 songs. It was an especially fun night for me as I was able to meet up with Trent Reznor, his adorable fiancée Mariqueen and the rest of the NIN crew before the show … where I even got to meet Peter Murphy as well. TR has agreed to give me another interview back in LA at the close of the Wave Goodbye Tour but I’ll get to that in a bit. After the jump, check out a few of the photos I snapped last night, see the full setlist performed and watch video of Nine Inch Nails featuring Peter Murphy on the NIN song Dead Souls

Nine Inch Nails ‘Wave Goodbye’ To Webster Hall, NYC

I find that I am still trying to wrap my head around last night’s Nine Inch Nails show at Webster Hall here in NYC, NY where the band played the entirety of the masterpiece album The Downward Spiral LIVE for the first and only time. Of the 20+ NIN shows I’ve seen since 1994, I gotta say that last night’s has to be the best … if for sheer content alone. Little did I know when I was going inside the venue last night that I would be among the lucky few NIN fans to bear witness to a truly legendary concert experience:

I realize that this may sound like extreme hyperbolic nonsense, especially to non-NIN fans, but I can assure you, the epic nature of last night’s show will truly be remembered for all time by Nine Inch Nails fans the world over. Whether you were there last night or just heard about it online, it’s all any NIN fan can talk about today (and prolly will talk about for many years to come). After the jump, check out a few of the photos that I snapped last night along with the full setlist (yes, they played a bunch of amazing songs after they completed TDS: Live) and find out where you can watch video of some of the songs performed last night …

"I always wanted to play that whole record. That's the only time we're going to do it."
NIN Perform ‘The Downward Spiral’ LIVE In Its Entirety In Concert

Fans who attended the Nine Inch Nails concert at Webster Hall here in NYC, NY last night were treated to a truly historic performance. For the first and only time, according to Trent Reznor himself, the entirety of NIN‘s masterpiece album The Downward Spiral (halo 8, originally released in March 1994) was performed live in concert. As some of you are well aware, NIN are currently on the final leg of their Wave Goodbye Tour which is, reportedly, the last batch of live performances from Nine Inch Nails. Clearly, TR wants to make these last shows ever ones for the record books because an historic show like the one that took place last night was really a very special one. Before the show began, NIN announced on its official Twitter profile that there was gonna be a “cool setlist” for last night’s show … “cool” doesn’t begin to describe:

Of course, fans who have seen the band perform live since The Downward Spiral was released in ’94 have heard many if not all of the songs from the album performed live (me included, especially on the Self Destruct Tour 94-95, tho I understand that A Warm Place has never been performed live in concert before) … but NEVER has the album been performed live, in sequential order. To be honest, I had been made privy to the plan for one of the final Wave Goodbye Tour shows to feature a live performance of The Downward Spiral but A.) I couldn’t let myself believe that such an amazing occurrence would really happen because I’d be so crushed if it never came to be and B.) even if I truly believed such an occurrence would happen, I thought for sure it wouldn’t happen so soon (last night’s Webster Hall show was only the 2nd of the final batch of shows). NIN played a show at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday August 22 and that show was filmed by 5 different cameras, earlier yesterday NIN announced via its official Twitter profile that because of Livenation‘s exorbitant usage fees (they own Webster Hall) they would not be able to officially film the Webster Hall show … which sucks ENTIRELY considering the epic nature of the event. I suspect the audio of last night’s show was recorded at least and fans were allowed to record the show with their own video cameras in the audience so hopefully a video record of last night’s show will make its way to fans at some point. It is my hope that as many fans as possible were able to attend the concert last night (NIN also announced via Twitter that a small number of tickets were available for sale at the last minute before the start of last night’s show) because, as any NIN fan knows, the Webster Hall concert will prolly exist for all time as THE Nine Inch Nails show you didn’t want to miss.

Trent Reznor did not stop to speak to the audience at any time during the portion that the band played The Downward Spiral but once they finished the final song from the album, he did pause to address the crowd, saying:

“I always wanted to play that whole record. That’s the only time we’re going to do it.”

The band then launched the next batch of songs that included Terrible Lie, Metal, Burn, Suck, Physical and more. Actually, the songs played after the TDS songs made up a pretty kickass setlist of its own. Altho TR closed his personal Twitter account, he did use the official NIN Twitter account to post a message to fans after last night’s performance:

That was a FUN (and exhausting) show to play tonight! Thanks to all who attended. (TR)

And to Trent Reznor, I say THANK YOU for a truly unforgettable concert experience. The Webster Hall show will be tough to beat (if that is even possible) but I cannot wait to see what is in store for the rest of the Wave Goodbye shows. Will NIN perform other albums (perhaps Pretty Hate Machine, The Fragile and/or Year Zero) in their entirety? What about special guest appearances (folks keep hoping David Bowie will show up on stage)? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I will post my full personal review of the show (including my photos and video) later on today but a truly legendary performance like the one I witnessed last night deserves a special post all its own.

Nine Inch Nails ‘Wave Goodbye’ To The Bowery Ballroom, NYC

Last night was the first show of the FINAL leg of Nine Inch Nails‘s Wave Goodbye Tour and, by pretty much all accounts, it was a fucking FANTASTIC performance. NIN played the intimate (ie. minuscule) Bowery Ballroom to a well-sold out house of ardent fans. The Horrors were the opening act but, in all honest, every single person in that venue was there for NIN:

The setlist for last night’s show was an excellent mixture of old and new and provided over 2 hours of kickass entertainment. Those of you seeing any of the future NIN shows on this leg of the Wave Goodbye Tour are in for a treat because I’ve been assured that the shows will all be different and Trent Reznor has got a bunch of really amazing surprises in store (if just *one* of the setlist scenarios I heard about turns out to be true, I will DIE). After the jump, check out some of the photos I snapped at last night’s concert, see the full setlist and watch video of NIN performing Discipline

The NINventure Beings, Phase I

Ugh … so things are a little slow-going today because I’m operating on just a few hours sleep. My red eye flight from LA to NYC was totally perfect, uncomplicated but rolling into town at 5AM and then trying to get some sleep only to wake up and work was ROUGH. As y’all should be well aware by now, I’m here in NYC for the upcoming string of final Wave Goodbye Tour shows which will take place starting Saturday night at Bowery Ballroom, Sunday at Webster Hall and Tuesday & Wednesday at Terminal 5. The final shows then will move on to Chicago and then conclude in LA. Nine Inch Nails released the official poster artwork for the NYC shows today:

The poster was unveiled on the official NIN Twitter account along with news of the merchandise that will be sold at the final shows:

Merchandise that will be available at the upcoming shows: dateback tee, event tee, women’s tee, tanktop, tour poster, city poster … There will be an event tee for each individual show (excluding V Fest). There will be three limited posters: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles.

I cannot tell you how excited I am. I have a couple days to kill before the first show on Saturday at Bowery Ballroom … it feels like the calm before the storm. I’m very geeked, y’all.

Not sure what the plan is for tonight … I’ve never been in NYC all by myself before … but I do have some really great friends who live here so I’m sure I’ll find something to do ;) It’s muggy and really gross humid here in NYC … but, I’m loving it :)

Limited-run, get 'em at the shows while they last
Nine Inch Nails Releases A Final Tour Poster For Final ‘Wave Goodbye’ Tourdates

Nine Inch Nails have just released on Twitter the poster artwork for the final batch of concert dates that they will be doing in NYC, Chicago and LA to close out their Wave Goodbye Tour. As you may recall, Trent Reznor announced a set of 10 dates (4 in NYC, 2 in Chicago and 4 in LA) that will be the last NIN shows, possibly, for good. To mark the occasion, a limited edition poster will be on sale in a limited run at the final shows … here is what it will look like along with the Twitter announcement:

Tour poster for the final run of shows – There will also be limited-run posters for New York, Chicago, and LA.

The end is nigh, y’all … and it is coming very quickly. I will be flying out to NYC next week for the 4 NYC shows the following weekend and then the weekend after that, I’ll be at the final final LA dates … and then, the end. I can’t remember the last time I bought a concert poster but you better believe I’ll be picking up one of these. It would be an understatement to call this the end of an era. While I am really excited for the shows, I’m not looking forward to Waving Goodbye for good :(

Au Revoir, bitches!
Nine Inch Nails ‘Wave Goodbye’ To Nîmes, France

This past week Nine Inch Nails played their final French concert ever to close out Le Festival de Nîmes in Nîmes, France in front of a sold out house as part of their Wave Goodbye Tour. NIN have only a handful of dates left in the Eastern part of the world to play before they return to the US to play their final shows in NYC, Chicago and LA at the end of August/early September. Here are a few pics of NIN doing their thang in France earlier this week:

I cannot EVEN tell you how seeing these photos have me all excited for the NIN shows to come at the end of this month. I’ll be at the 4 NYC shows and the 4 LA shows. While I’m very bummed that these will be the last NIN shows ever, I’m so very much looking forward to seeing the band in action 8 more times!!! Nine Inch Nails plays the Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth, England tomorrow night and then they head off to do shows in the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea. Time is running out to see NIN live … but as much as I’m dreading the end of Live NIN Road, I am very much looking forward to their return home in a few weeks.

Blink and you missed them
Tickets For The Final Nine Inch Nails Shows Sell Out Instantly

Last week Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails announced that a final batch of tickets would be going on sale for the FINAL Nine Inch Nails shows (possibly of all time) this week. Pre-sales for shows in smaller venues in NYC, Chicago and LA went on sale yesterday evening at 5pm local time at NIN.com. As is usually the case with online pre-sales, there were a few technical problems which cannot be avoided but all in all, the tickets were made available as promised … and sold out within seconds:

The NYC shows (Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall and two shows at Terminal 5) went on sale first and went the fastest. If you were not logged in at precisely 5pm, you were locked out long enough that you weren’t even able to see the ticketing page to order tickets. The demand was just as high for the LA batch of tickets (Hollywood Palladium, Henry Fonda Theater, Wiltern and Echoplex). Because all of the tickets sold instantly, ticket scaplers have already put tickets on eBay for exorbitant sums. NIN posted the first listing at eBay warning buyers to NOT BUY SCALPED TICKETS:

Every effort is being made to thwart ticket scalping but for shows in such high demand, it’s understandable that this sort of thing is taking place. One hopes that real NIN fans will be able to see the shows for as little cost as possible. I am very, VERY happy to report that I will be attending the NYC and the LA shows. I’ll do my best to share the experience with all y’all. I know some of you also managed to get tickets for the shows you wanted … so I guess I’ll see you there!

Intimate clubs, y'all!! OMFG!!
Trent Reznor Announces A New Set Of Nine Inch Nails Tourdates

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, who is currently on tour in Europe on the Wave Goodbye Tour (which *may* be NIN‘s last tour ever), posted a message on the NIN official website alerting fans to the fact that a NEW SET of US tourdates will be announced soon. The dates will take place in August, in the cities NYC, Chicago and LA … and in smaller, club venues! Here is the full text of TR‘s announcement:

Getting right to the point, we’re going to play a handful of shows in NYC, Chicago and LA starting August 22nd. They will be informal affairs in medium to small venues with longer set-lists, possible special guests, cool openers and other surprises. Upon reflection, the NIN/JA tour felt like we had to rush through sets due to a limited allotted set length and many shows were in daylight – it just didn’t feel right to end NIN that way. An offer to headline V-Fest in Toronto (being announced soon) set the idea in motion to play some FUN shows to end this up with. If we can get it together we’ll film these shows, too.

In NYC we’ll be playing Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall and Terminal 5. In Chicago, the Aragon Ballroom. In LA we’ll be at The Wiltern, The Henry Fonda, The Palladium and The Echoplex. These should be cool, unusual and unique shows and I hope you come out – this is it.

So far, The Horrors will be joining us for some shows in NYC, Mew will be with us at other shows in NYC, Chicago and LA, and perhaps more.
Details and ticket info will be announced shortly, so check back.

Thanks,
Trent

Hot Damn!! This is just … incredible! NIN haven’t played club dates in the US since the early 90′s … these shows are absolutely MUST SEE for any Nine Inch Nails fan. Altho I was extremely fortunate to be able to see NIN play a tiny club in Barcelona, Spain a couple of years ago I have never been able to see them play smaller venues here in the US. At the very least, I plan on attending the NYC and the LA shows. If these shows turn out to be the last NIN shows ever … I absolutely plan to be there to bear witness. Woot!! Actual tourdates and onsale ticket information has yet to be announced … I’ll be sure to pass along that info when it becomes available. Again, I say, WOOT!!
