Triple Feature

So yeah … yesterday … David and I did a whole lotta nuthin’! I had briefly entertained the idea of going out last night but I inadvertantly got sucked into watching A Night of Pixar on Starz last night and ended up watching Monsters, Inc., WALL·E and Up all in a row:

I honestly only planned on watching Monsters, Inc. since it’s been a few years since I’ve seen it … but I couldn’t resist watching WALL·E and then after SWEARING I would only watch the opening segment in Up … well, that’s where my whole night went.

David and I are planning to get out to the beach today but we’re still undecided so … well, we’ll have to see how we end up celebrating our 4th of July. I hope YOUR day is going well, whatever you’re doing wherever in the world you are :)

My Top Movies & TV Shows Of 2008

Just like it was for music, 2008 wasn’t really a great year for movies or television … the Writer’s Strike at the start of the year really decimated Hollywood and severely hurt television programming. That said, there were a few really amazing films (highlighted by really amazing acting performances) and a select few TV shows that really brought the entertainment this year. Here is my list of my Fave Movies of 2008 … I think the #1 pick might surprise you.

At #10 is The Incredible Hulk:

This movie may not have been the best superhero film of all time but it beat the hell out of Ang Lee‘s Hulk and really did a service to both the comic book series and the TV series from the ’70s. This film really paid homage to the beloved TV series for the first half of the film and then represented the comic books very well in the second half of the film. All I know is that I had a really good time at the movies watching this film … and isn’t that what’s most important?

At #9 is W.:

Oliver Stone films are really hit or miss and this one was a pretty nice hit. Josh Brolin played a superb GWB and managed to put our soon-to-be ex-president in real context. I am no GWB fan by any stretch of the imagination but this film actually made him a sympathetic character. Props to Oliver Stone for actually doing the impossible.

In the #8 position is Doubt:

This film is all about the acting. And among the amazing acting performances, Meryl Streep far outshines everyone else in this film. She absolutely turned in the most powerful acting performance this year … she absolutely deserves all the Best Actress awards and, IMHO, the Best Actor awards as well — she is that good in this film. I feel bad for Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams, who both turned in exceptional performances, cuz Streep just steals the spotlight. She made this movie such a delight for me to watch.

At #7 is Milk:

At long last, the story of Harvey Milk‘s life made it to the big screen … and Sean Penn did his memory a great service. Milk may not have been a blockbuster but it is a very important story that is told so expertly that I wish it had made more money at the box office. Penn‘s cast of supporting actors were also pretty phenomenal … as a whole they told a tale that an entire generation of people were hearing for the first time — which was eerily similar to the events that were playing out on the streets of SoCal this past November.

At #6 is WALL•E:

OMG … what can I say about WALL•E that hasn’t been said a million times before? The movie is just cute as hell and actually caused kids and grown adults alike to fall in love with a sweet little animated trash compactor. I had my doubts about this film before I saw it for myself … but man, once I saw it — I was hooked. WALL•E is absolutely the Best Animated Film of 2008.

Robot Love

First things first — I have to send out even more Birthday Lurve to my dear friend Diana who is celebrating her birthday today :) She is all the way on the other side of the country in Washington DC and even tho I can’t be with her today I want her to know that I love and miss her dearly. I hope she has a great birthday and I hope we are able to see one another very soon … perhaps she can come out for a visit (hint, hint)? In any event, much, much love goes out to Diana today :)

At long last, my friend Michael and I were finally able to get together for the movie outing that we’ve been planning for weeks. Before last night we had been unable to coordinate our schedules (to the point of ridiculousness) so last night we finally got our shizz straight and got together. Last night we watched WALL·E:

I know I should be beat over the head for my stubbornness but I initially discounted this movie as a throw-away and never really considered checking it out. Thanks to Michael’s insistence that I’d love it, I gave it a chance and TOTALLY fell in love with this insanely cute movie. WALL·E strikes me as a mix between E.T. and the robot Number 5 from the 80′s movie Short Circuit (I’d be shocked if WALL·E wasn’t at least partially modeled on Number 5) but way cuter. I never dreamed that a movie with very little speech would be so poignant and so entertaining. There is deffo an environmental message in this movie but it’s told with such sweetness and caring, I think it’s a brills way to entertain and enlighten all at the same time. I’m not even gonna front … I *almost* teared up at the end when “the kiss” takes place. The movie was directed by Andrew Stanton, who also directed Finding Nemo — the man deffo has a knack for using animated films to tell very poignant stories. I’m hearing buzz that WALL·E might even get nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards next year … which I think is a bit premature but I can see where those reports are coming from. If you’ve not seen this movie yet, I really suggest you check it out … take a date … it’s crazy cute and very entertaining. It’s deffo one of my fave movies of the year thus far.

After the movie, Michael and I grabbed a quick bite to eat and posed for a cheesy pic:

I am in desperate need of a haircut (hence the hat), which I plan to have taken care of later on this afternoon. I’m not sure what else is on my plate … I have to take care of a few things before David arrives tomorrow night … fun times ahead :)
