HORROR-bly Fun

The TV Guide
Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Last night David and I were invited to join a group of friends at Universal Studios to enjoy a night of fun at Halloween Horror Nights (the same thing that MJ’s kids and Elizabeth Taylor enjoyed a couple of weeks ago). To be honest, when I agreed to attend I wasn’t really anticipating that it would be an actual night of horror … I guess I thought it was gonna be more like Halloween Time at Disneyland … yeah, I was wrong about that. There are few things in life that I hate more than haunted houses so when I learned that we’d be visiting mazes based on some Universal horror films … I damn near bolted for the door. But, because I was with a group of good friends (and I knew I could rely on Tamar to be just as scared as I was … she is THE BEST friend to have around when you’re scared) I bit the bullet and just enjoyed … and had the time of my life! I was SO impressed with the horror attractions at Universal … the haunted houses looked exactly like the movie sets used in Halloween, SAW, My Bloody Valentine, etc. Yes, there were a lot of things jumping out at you but … with a group of friends (and David’s jacket to hide under) it was really fun. Here are some pics that I snapped with my phone at Universal Studios last night:

In addition to the horror stuff, we got to visit sound stages, back lot sets and got to ride some fun rides. After the jump, check out some Polaroid pics that we snapped last night and see some of our superfun photos from a couple of the rides we rode last night …

Michael Jackson’s Children & Liz Taylor Enjoy ‘Horror Nights’ Together

Universal appeal
Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Here are a few fun photos of Michael Jackson’s eldest children Prince Michael Joseph and Paris Michael Katherine along with their nanny Grace Rwaramba, the illustrious Elizabeth Taylor and various Jackson cousins enjoying a night of fun at Universal Studios Horror Nights in Studio City, CA last night. I presume that Prince Michael Joseph, II aka Blanket was there last night as well but he is not featured in any of the photos … behold:

Not only is it great to see the kids spending time with Liz Taylor (who MJ loved dearly in life) but it’s pretty fantastic to see Liz out and about so soon after her recent hospitalization. That woman is amazing … so wonderful to see her out and about. Obvs, she did not ride any of the rides with the kiddies but she was there to share the night with them … something I’m sure MJ appreciated very much wherever in the ethos he is right now. MJ’s kids may enjoy a happy Hallowe’en after all, despite their painful loss. It really looks like they have a great support system taking care of them … let’s just hope the exploitative people who have access to them are kept at bay. Don’t they all look great?

Miley Cyrus & Justin Gaston Visit Universal Studios … Again

Live there, apparently
Thursday, September 25th, 2008

For some strange reason, Miley Cyrus and Justin Gaston have a strange love affair going on … with Universal Studios. Ever since the couple started “hanging out” together (ie. going out on dates) the pair have spent pretty much every waking hour at Universal Studios … I thought Miley worked for Walt Disney? In any event, the last time we saw Miley and Justin (who I’ve decided to dub Jiley) at Universal they were being chaperoned by her mother Tish Cyrus. This time around, papa Billy Ray Cyrus tagged along for the chaperoning duties … behold:

I mean, I get why these two would want to hook-up — she’s an insanely rich up-and-coming starlet and he’s just really effin’ hot (and age difference be damned). What I don’t get is the fascination with Universal Studios. No offense to the folks at Universal but the park and CityWalk aren’t all that great. I much prefer Disneyland for amusement and someplace like Century City for outdoor eating, shopping, hanging out. But, I guess if you want to accidentally run into Jiley on one of their dates you now know where to go. Make sure you say HI for me.

A ‘Universal’ Fire!

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Fire broke out early Sunday morning on the back lot at Universal Studios in Universal City, CA destroying a portion of the New York City street and damaged a vault storing archival video. The 2008 MTV Movie Awards were scheduled to take place at the Universal Amphitheater later on this afternoon and, because that area of the lot was unaffected by the fire, will go on as planned. Here are a few photos of the fire that raged this morning:

A fast-moving blaze Sunday on the back lot of Universal Studios destroyed several movie sets and damaged a video vault before firefighters contained it. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries, fire officials said. No other injuries were reported. The fire destroyed an area called New York street, which includes movie-set buildings designed to look like the New York cityscape. Hours after the blaze started, the area looked charred and resembled a “disaster movie,” said Los Angeles Councilman Tom LaBonge. LaBonge said he could see the smoke from his home Sunday morning. “I looked out my window at the Hollywood Hills, and it looked like a bomb had exploded,” he said. Despite the massive blaze at the Southern California site, which includes an amusement park, officials still planned to hold the 2008 MTV Movie Awards there later Sunday. The awards show was scheduled to be broadcast live from an amphitheater at the park Sunday afternoon, an MTV representative said. “The areas we are utilizing for our production were unaffected, and the 2008 MTV Movie Awards will go on as planned,” an MTV spokesman said in a statement. “We’re working closely with authorities to make sure everything operates smoothly.” More than 400 Los Angeles-area firefighters were called to battle the fire on the back lot, adjacent to the theme park. The blaze began around 4:45 a.m. PT (7:45 a.m. ET). At a news conference Sunday morning, fire officials said the blaze was contained. Still, large plumes of smoke rose from the blaze that continued to burn at a video vault. Between 40,000 to 50,000 videos and reels were damaged, but there are duplicates stored at a different location, according to The Associated Press. “Fortunately, nothing irreplaceable was lost,” said Ron Meyer, CEO of Universal Studios. “The video library was affected and damaged, but our main vault of our motion picture negatives was not.” The set where the movie “The Changeling,” directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Angelina Jolie, was recently shot was “completely destroyed,” Meyer said. Another movie set called the “Courthouse Square” was destroyed, Meyer said. Numerous movies have been shot in the area, including scenes from the 1985 hit “Back to the Future,” Meyer said. The “King Kong” exhibit also was destroyed, fire officials said.

It’s pretty remarkable, the smoke from this fire could be seen from almost all parts of Los Angeles. I don’t live that far from Universal Studios, so the smoke was especially thick around here. Thus far there have been no reports of causalities and it’s heartening to know that nothing irreplaceable from the video vault was lost. It’s sad that King Kong and the Back to the Future courthouse were destroyed tho :(
