Reminiscing With Tori Amos

Over the weekend we got to see photos and hear audio of Tori Amos‘s concert performance at the Bonnaroo Arts & Music Festival in Manchester, TN on Friday night (her only scheduled US performance this year) and came upon a blog that offers the entire performance for download. The site also features bootleg recordings, previously featured on Yessaid.com, of Tori‘s entire Plugged ’98 Tour — the first tour she ever did with a backing band. I was immediately transported back to 1998 … and the 7 Tori Amos shows that I saw that year. Yes, folks, I am a HUGE Tori Amos fan:

I was living in Detroit, MI at the time and I was within driving range of Toronto, Canada, Cleveland, OH, Chicago, IL, Grand Rapids, MI and East Lansing, MI (the cities that were included in my 7 concert Tori tour that year) … and all of the shows I attended are now available for download. Man … that was a great year. I got to meet Tori a few times at some of the meet and greets she did with fans before and after the shows. If you PROMISE not to judge me too hard, check out a photo of what I looked like back in ’98 when I was following Tori Amos on tour — after the jump …

LISTEN to her entire 1 1/2 hour concert performance HERE!
Tori Amos Plays The 2010 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival

Tori Amos performed her only scheduled US concert date this year last night at the 2010 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN and if you were not able to attend last night’s performance in person, I’ve got some amazing news for you. National Public Radio recorded and broadcast her entire 1 1/2 hour concert set online last night … and YOU can listen to it in full today. But before we get to that, here are a few photos of Tori wearing her “Sunday best” during her amazing performance last night:

Tori Amos found her voice in the early ’90s, when she stripped away everything phony about the music of the time: Her solo debut, Little Earthquakes, was nothing but haunting pianos, a singular voice and lots of raw nerves. She’s expanded her sound since then — experimenting with new personae, dabbling in electronics, and so on — but she’s maintained her place as a unique and uncompromising performer. Amos’ most recent album (not counting a holiday release, which followed a few months later) is titled Abnormally Attracted to Sin. Hear her perform a full concert from the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn

I was not able to listen to the live stream of Tori‘s performance last night but thankfully, NPR archived and has made her entire Bonnaroo performance available for listening online!! I’ve been listening to her entire show all morning and really, really wish I could’ve been there last night to see her in person. It was just Tori Amos and her piano … as it should always be. After the jump, check out Tori‘s Bonnaroo setlist and listen to her entire concert performance in full …

"If we continue to abuse Earth & her Earth Law she will reject us from her surface"
Tori Amos Does ‘What?!’ Magazine

Musical goddess Tori Amos is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of the UK publication What?! which is edited and published by Tori‘s longtime BFF and stylist Karen Binns. Here is Tori‘s beautiful and very cool coverphoto fro What?! magazine:

On the cover of this issue we have my long-time friend and sista Tori Amos, which I guess speaks for itself. She is one of the most insanely attractive people of our time: singer, songwriter, producer and a true Goddess. Knowing and hanging out with Tori is like flying on a silver carpet with candied apples and red wine. She has been an inspiration to my creative being for the last 17 years. Tori is the true channeler of our times, her success is not from the size of her wardrobe but from the spirit of her blood. Her Goddess is always on tap. She was born with that ‘thing’ you just can’t purchase, manipulate or steal – it’s original without a price. Not forgetting to mention her dedication to her charity/hotline RAINN – Rape, Absue, and Incest National Network (1-800-656-HOPE, rainn.org).

I love that Tori and Karen are working together on this magazine photospread because they truly work very well together. This cover photo looks very cool all negative-like but wait until you see it in positive color along with a couple other photos from this issue of What? magazine — after the jump …

"Hand me my leather"

Tori Amos sat down to do an interview with Spinner to promote her holiday album Midwinter Graces and shared a few memories from her Xmas celebrations from days of yore. In one particularly vivid memory, Tori remembers heading a children’s choir while she wore a pair of sassy red leather pants:

“Red leather pants was one of the things I remember. I was teaching the children’s choir at Potomac United Methodist’s Church, right outside of Washington, at one point in my teens. I guess I was about 15,16, and I had these great red leather pants. I was really inspired to take on the job because it’s not as if anyone was banging down my door to offer me anything other than playing the bars — which I was doing six nights a week. But I wanted to give something to the kids, and if that was the place that was letting me do it — because of my dad — and they did have a shortage of people who wanted to teach, I thought, ‘OK.’ It was kind of religious music but it didn’t have to be filled with shame. We would pick the material that would make the kids feel good, and I had a really stormin’ choir.”

LOL at “stormin’ choir” … what I think Tori meant to say was “bitchin’ choir” :) Here is part one of Tori‘s colorful interview with Spinner:

Squeeeeeeeeee, I just love her. After the jump, check out part two of Spinner‘s fun interview with the goddess Tori Amos

That is, if Sarah Palin attempts to run for the Vice Presidency again
Tori Amos Announces A Bid For The US Presidency

Tori Amos, the amazing singer with a penchant for openly speaking her mind on a vast number of subjects, is considering throwing her hat into the political arena and may run for the US Presidency in 2012 … IF former Alaska governor Sarah Palin tries to run for Vice President again. In a new interview with the Daily Express, Amos explains that if an unqualified person like Palin believes she can run for major political office then she should have no problem running herself as well:

American singer TORI AMOS has vowed to run for office if former U.S. Vice President candidate SARAH PALIN ever tries to get elected again. Republican Palin’s role in the 2008 White House race divided America, with many questioning her credentials – and the Spark hitmaker insists she’ll run alongside the Alaskan if she ever eyes the vice presidential candidacy again. She says, “If Palin runs again, I’m going to run on a Republican ticket. What I know about Middle Eastern policy could fit on a thumbnail, but I still know more than she does. You have to ask, how could a nation nearly vote in somebody who isn’t qualified for the job?” But Amos feels more positive about the future of her country now U.S. President Barack Obama is in power: “I’m a lot more hopeful. The (George W.) Bush years were really difficult times if you were an American who loved your country. Having someone now that so many people respect doesn’t mean there aren’t going to be problems, but so many problems have been left behind.”

Altho this quote from Tori is a bit confusing, I believe the point she is trying to get across is that altho she herself is NOT qualified to run for office she cheekily believes she is more qualified than Palin is. And if the Republican party decides to put Palin on the ticket again, then she should have no problem running on the very same ticket. I’m fairly certain that Tori Amos is aligning herself with the Republican Party in this way to make a point of Palin‘s lack of qualifications (and not because she actually believes in the Republican Party platform). In any event, the point is taken … and, to be honest, I can’t say I’d mind Tori Amos running for political office here in the US. The mind boggles at what sort of accomplishments Amos would make if she were in office. If Tori were serious about this claim, then I think I would actually support Palin‘s bid for office again.

Okay, yeah, not really but it’s fun to dream.

If she were a man, that is
Tori Amos Tells ‘Out’ Magazine That She Knows How To Sex Up Jennifer Aniston

Tori Amos sat down with Out magazine’s Popnography for a little tête à tête and in this new interview talks about things as varied as Lady GaGa‘s staying power in the music biz (a subject she’s talked about before), why she doesn’t like revealing what other contemporary artists she listens to and what she would do sexually to Jennifer Aniston if she were a man. Yes, folks, this interview is Tori Amos at her finest. Here are a few screencaps from her interview and some excerpts from her chat:

On her masculine side:
“When I play I don’t feel as if I’m a sex — sometimes. Sometimes I feel as [if I'm] an entity and an energy and a musician. But the word musician isn’t male or female and there are times when I play that I feel as if I have a third leg. And there are times that I feel that I’m pregnant. If I were a male musician I do believe in a way there’d be less available women around because I would know how to turn some of them out — particularly Jennifer Aniston. Because I just look at her sometimes and say, “I know what to do with you.” But that’s my third leg self talking, that’s not the woman who wants to eat pussy — because I just don’t want to do that.”

On younger female artists:
“I think Lady Gaga is immensely entertaining and is a musician. Not all the divas are musicians, they’re dancers who can sing, so it’s important to say those ones that are players — that needs to be acknowledged. Some of the performers as they are now, in their incarnation now in their 20′s, people have asked me “Will some of these people be around?” When you talk about these women — Britney and Lady Gaga — what’s working for them now, which is very sexualized, you don’t want to see sexualized in [their] 60′s.”

On which contemporary artists she listens to:
“I do listen to contemporary music but years ago there was a particular artist who was asked [who they listen to] and everybody’s names were mentioned as artists who would do something with their lives and I wasn’t mentioned. And I had to reexamine myself for a couple days and realize that OK, they might not believe in me or even know I existed. And I decided if I were ever in a position that to single certain people out and not others — I might not be aware of them or not — I do think that the process of creativity can be very personal and so I keep that to myself.”

Ye gods, I love this woman. Out‘s Popnography site is featuring this 2-part video interview with Tori Amos HERE. It is deffo worth your time. In addition to these charming quotes, Tori talks about so much more. Check it out, I think you’ll be pleased :)

Her Aussie tour rolls on
Tori Amos Plays The PCEC Riverside Theatre In Perth, Australia

Last week we learned that Tori Amos played a concert at the famed Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia and over the weekend, Tori played a concert at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre: Riverside Theatre in Perth. Here are a few photos of the very beautiful Tori Amos from her Perth show on Saturday lookin’ like the goddess that she is in her floor-length silver gown:

According to fan reports from Undented.com, Tori‘s show was a more quiet and subdued one than usual. Tori kept the conversation to a bare minimum and played to a smaller, quieter audience. In my opinion, that is not a bad thing at all … the setlist she performed ran the gamut from old to new and sounded very much like one of her early concert performances (minus the Tori stories, that is). After the jump, check out Tori‘s amazing Perth setlist and find out just how great the concert really was …

"Shower the world with pink, if you please"
First Look: Tori Amos, ‘Pink & Glitter’ (Live)

Yahoo! Music has just posted a new video of a live performance by Tori Amos of the seasonal track Pink & Glitter taken from her new holiday album Midwinter Graces … here are a few screencaps from her performance:

I’m not sure if Tori plans to release traditional music videos or singles from this album so live performance videos like this might be all we can expect. As far as potential songs to release off the album as singles, you really can’t go wrong with Pink & Glitter. After the jump, check out the video in full …
