Tori Amos Contends That Lady Gaga Will Soon Be Forgotten

"She's what I call a meteor - singers who entertain people for a while."
Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

In a new interview with the UK newspaper The Sun, Tori Amos talks about her personal opinions on Lady Gaga and he staying power in the music industry. Never one to shy away from actively voicing her opinions, Tori makes it clear that she believes Gaga to be a flash in the pan who will be long forgotten in the years to come. HMMM:

TORI AMOS fears LADY GAGA has a limited shelf life, hinting fans will soon tire of the quirky New Yorker’s novelty pop act. The Cornflake Girl songstress – who’s been selling out venues since 1991 – struggles to visualise GaGa playing on the same bill as veteran rocker NEIL YOUNG two decades from now. However, she admits the Poker Face singer’s unique brand of “entertaining” performance art is a welcome antidote to the global economic crisis. She told The Sun: “She’s what I call a meteor – singers who entertain people for a while. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that. But then there are people like Neil Young who show up at Glastonbury 40 years into their career. And that’s a very different kind of artist. Neil Young doesn’t have to get his bum out on stage! The question is, will Lady GaGa be playing alongside Neil Young at Glastonbury in 20 years time? She wants to entertain people. Right now, half the world is depressed and they need to be entertained. So her timing’s perfect” … As a result of her own traumatic beginnings, Amos can empathise with the likes of BRITNEY SPEARS, whose rapid rise to prominence as a teen triggered a series of very public meltdowns. “For me, the best thing that happened is that I didn’t have success like my father wanted me to when I was 14-years-old and I was playing clubs,” she said. Thank God it didn’t happen for me at that time. I probably wouldn’t be talking to you if it had. I think it’s really tough on teenagers when they have that kind of success. But you have to acknowledge Britney’s discipline right now – being a mum and being out on the road. When you do that year-in, year-out since you were a teenager, it can become overwhelming.” Outspoken Amos has also sent out a warning shot to young female upstarts eyeing a career in the music industry. The 46-year-old singer claims record companies are rife with power-hungry money-makers who exploit new stars for their own greedy means. She said: “A lot of times you have a producer who will say, ‘You’re lucky to be having this opportunity.’ Sure, there are a lot of other talented people out there, but you have to fight for your freedom. There’s a side to this industry that nurtures divas who can’t write. It’s a big business. I produce the records. I don’t hand over control to some really expensive producer who then talks to the record company and then tries to bend me to their will – for commercial purposes. But there are a lot of producers/co-writers who the only way they can make a living is if the divas are not producing themselves and not writing their songs.”

LOL! I love how Tori thinks that Gaga is only popular right now because of tough economic times. As I’ve said before, I’m not particularly entertained by anything that Gaga does (save for her catchy first single Just Dance) but I can appreciate that there are others that are entertained by her. Just like many people don’t like some of the artist that I enjoy, there is room enough for everyone to like what they like. BUT, I do agree with Tori that acts like Gaga or Katy Perry will not stand the test of time. Even if you don’t agree with her, you really cannot fault Tori for being honest about her opinions. She has been an incredible artist for many, many years and she shows no signs of slowing down. I think an artist like Tori who has stood and will continue to stand the test of time has the pedigree to made judgments like this. She is 100% right that young artists should hang on to their integrity and fight for the freedom to make the art that they are most proud of … flash in the pans may make money in the short term but longevity comes from carefully managing your career. It seems to me that young artists looking for someone to emulate would be better served if they followed Tori Amos’s example rather than that of the here today/gone tomorrow pop star du jour.

Tori Amos Brings Her ‘Sinful Attraction’ Tour To Detroit Rock City

The TV Guide
Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Yesterday was a bizzy day for me … but since it was my only full day here in Detroit, I had to pack in as much as possible. First, Tracey brought over my beautiful goddaughter Princess Zakiya and her little BFF Toni for an afternoon of shopping and playtime. She turned 4 this past Wednesday so we had some celebratin’ to do. Z will be starting school this Fall (WHICH I STILL CANNOT BELIEVE) so we shopped for school clothes and some toys for both the little ladies. Sarah came with us … here are a few pics:

Afterward, Sarah and I got ready and made our way to downtown Detroit to see Tori Amos play a show at the Detroit Opera House. Last night’s show was the third of her Sinful Attraction Tour that Sarah and I got to see … and Tori did NOT disappoint! She looked and sounded AMAZING:

I took A LOT of photos so — after the jump, check out more pics from last night’s Tori Amos concert along with the show’s setlist, a short vid of Raspberry Swirl that I recorded and see some pics of some of the Pink readers I got to meet last night …

Last night, Sarah and I were able to attend our second of three Tori Amos concerts (after seeing our first show of this tour in San Diego, CA on Thursday night). Tori played the Greek Theater (my fave outdoor LA venue) which is a beautiful venue for a show like Tori’s:

So as not to spoil the show for any of y’all who have yet to see the Sinful Attraction Tour, I’ll keep the photos of the show behind the cut. For those of you so inclined, you can see some of the pics I snapped along with the full show setlist after the jump …

Tori Amos Brings Her ‘Sinful Attraction’ Tour To San Diego

The TV Guide
Friday, July 17th, 2009

Yesterday afternoon, my BFF Sarah and I hit the open road and made our way from LA down the coast to San Diego, CA to see Tori Amos live in concert. For the past 14 years, Sarah and I have made our way to many, many Tori Amos concerts all over the country but this was our first Tori show in SD. On our way down, we stopped for a seaside photo opp and then made time for dinner at Chick-Fil-A before arriving at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay for Tori Amos’s Sinful Attraction Tour:

We had a fun drive down but we were anxious to get to the venue so that we could enjoy our latest Tori Amos concert (our first of 3 from this new tour). So as not to spoil the show for those of you who have yet to see Tori on tour this time around, I’ll keep my photos and the setlist from last night’s show behind the cut. For those of you inclined, you can read my review of the show after the jump …

Tori Amos Performs ‘Baby One More’ Time By Britney Spears

Live in concert in Oakland, CA
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Tori Amos brought her Sinful Attraction Tour to the Paramount Theater in Oakland, CA last night and also brought along a surprisingly unlikely song to cover live during her performance. Tori traditionally performs solo cover songs mid-way thru her shows … on this tour, that portion of the show is called The Lizard Lounge. Tori explained that a “fairy came to [her] hotel [that] morning” and told her to perform a certain song last night … that song was Baby One More Time by Britney Spears:

Tori went on to say that she informed her young daughter Natashya Lórien that she was going to perform Baby One More Time and Tash said, “You’re kidding me” and reminded her mother, “You don’t know that song” to which Tori replied, “I don’t know any of the fucking songs I play.” OMG … LOVE IT!!! So as not to spoil the show for any of y’all who’ve yet to see it and want to remain unspoiled, I’ll put the full set list behind the cut. After the jump, hear Tori Amos’s cover of Britney Spears’s debut single Baby One More Time

Forgive Me, For I Have ‘Sin’ned

The TV Guide
Saturday, May 16th, 2009

After some discussion about our Friday night plans the only thing that ended up getting done around here was piles of laundry and not much else. David spent his night reading while I watched some TV and listened in full to Tori Amos’s new album Abnormally Attracted to Sin:

Normally I like to spend time with a new Tori album to listen to it in full with headphones on but since the album is now streaming at her My Space profile, I just plugged in my headphones to my computer and listened to the whole thing last night. It’s really a spectacular album. It’s slower than many of her albums but the lyrics are superb. I still need a few listens to ingest it fully but I do like the disc overall. I am DYING to hear the new stuff live. If you, too, can’t wait til the album gets released on Tuesday, head over the Tori’s My Space to hear the album in full for yourselves.

I also spent much of last night boning up on my Mac skillz. This is my second week working exclusively on my MacBook Pro and I am really, really loving being back on a Mac computer. My first computer was a Mac and I was a staunch Mac person all thru college. Some of my old instincts have kicked in again but there’s so much new functionality that I need to get familiar with. THIS site suggested by someone on Twitter kept me bizzy learning Mac stuff last night for hours.

I think David and I are meeting up with friends for dinner tonight and then tomorrow we leave for Las Vegas, NV for the NIN show on Monday night. From there we go to NYC for a few days before we come back home next weekend. On the move again. In the meantime, I just wanna enjoy the beautiful weekend here in SoCal.

The Full Set Of Tori Amos Visualettes Has Been Released

Watch the entire album 'Abnormally Attracted to Sin' now!
Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Tori Amos’s new album Abnormally Attracted to Sin will not be released here in the US until next Tuesday but the disc is released down under in Australia tomorrow … and in celebration, SameSame.co.au has released the FULL SET of visualette videos that accompany each song on the album. Previously, we’ve been able to see a few of the visualettes HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE on the blog but now we can watch the entire set in full (16 total). Here are a few screencaps from some of the visualettes that can be seen for the first time at the Same Same site:

Tori fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the release of her latest album Abnormally Attracted To Sin. To whet your appetites, Tori’s created a series of short films to accompany each track from the album, with the help of director Christian Lamb. The footage, captured during Amos’ American Doll Posse tour, actually inspired the songs that would become Abnormally Attracted To Sin. In a Same Same exclusive, here they all are in full.

The visualettes for That Guy, Welcome to England, Strong Black Vine and Ophelia can be seen HERE. The visualettes for Fast Horse, Fire to your Plain, Curtain Call and Not Dying Today can be seen HERE. The visualettes for Maybe California, Give, Police Me and Starling can be seen HERE. And the visualettes for 500 Miles, Flavor, Lady in Blue and Abnormally Attracted to Sin can be seen HERE. I am COMPLETELY unable to wait until my copy of the album + DVD arrives so I have watched all of the visualettes and I am so excited by this new music. The songs weave into one another and having accompanying videos with each song really ties the whole thing together. I will deffo need to spend time with Abnormally Attracted to Sin and my headphones once my disc arrives but I am loving what I’m seeing and hearing already. Some of you may be able to hold off and wait on watching these visualettes but I simply could not. For those of you Tori fans like me, enjoy!!

UPDATE: It looks like the site took down all of the visualettes save for two (Welcome to England and Maybe California). I guess they weren’t authorized to post the full set after all. Hope those of you interested were able to watch them before they were taken down.
