High Art

Yesterday was a pretty bizzy day for me … after seeing an early afternoon showing of Transformers: Dark of the Moon (review forthcoming), David and I made our way to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for a members only party in honor of the Tim Burton Exhibit currently on display. Afterward, we made our way to The Other Door in North Hollywood, CA to hang out at the Fumadores dance party. ‘Twas a really fun day/night.

‘Alice In Wonderland’ Premieres In London

Tim Burton‘s fantastical new 3D film Alice in Wonderland won’t open in theaters until next Friday March 5 but the film had its world premiere in Odeon Leicester Square in London, England earlier today … kicking off the film’s final PR push leading up to the film’s release. Here are a few photos from the red green carpet arrivals at today’s Wonderland premiere:

Maybe it’s just her natural complexion or she wanted to bring an element of her character to tonight’s proceedings. Whatever the reason, Anne Hathaway decided on a pale and interesting look as she attended the Royal World Premiere of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland in London tonight. The actress, who plays The White Queen in the new 3D movie, looked stunning in a brown sparkly dress, which showed off her white skin beautifully. Despite her strapless dress, she braved the cold and wet weather, which is pretty much guaranteed whenever there’s a red carpet event in London at this time of the year. And a little thing like the rain was certainly not going to stop the stars of the film attending the premiere of the acclaimed director’s new celluloid offering. Burton arrived arm-in-arm with actress partner Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays the foul-tempered monarch the Queen of Hearts, and had accessorised her outfit with red heart earrings and had sewn silver hearts into her dress. Johnny Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter, was one of the first to arrive in Leicester Square in London, dressed quite somberly compared to his on-screen alter-ego. The 46-year-old actor, looked rather dapper in a black suit and white open-necked shirt as he posed for pictures outside the venue. Ironically, the film is being premiered at the Odeon cinema, part of the cinema chain that initially refused to screen the film after a row with Disney over the early planned release of the DVD … Thankfully, the dispute was resolved today just in time for tonight’s premiere.

And so … the countdown is on for the much-anticipated release of Alice in Wonderland! Today’s premiere from London was broadcast live online so that fans from around the world could watch the celebs make their way down the rain-soaked carpet … I watched a bit of it but it wasn’t all that interesting. I’m totally focused on the film itself. David and I will be attending an early screening of the film next week at the El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Blvd. and I am SO excited!! Wee!! Can’t wait!!

The other side of 'Sleeping Beauty'
Tim Burton To Tell The Tale Of Maleficent

Exciting news to pass along to Tim Burton fans today, it is being reported that he is planning to do a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of villain Maleficent. I mean … how awesome does that sound?! Here are the deets as reported by Ain’t It Cool News:

Hey folks, Harry here with the coolest whisper I’ve heard in a while. I was chatting to a fella I know tonight, and this person heard that Tim Burton is developing another classic Disney fairy tale in a quasi Live Actiony kinda way. It seems that Tim has a hankering for SLEEPING BEAUTY… but not really… You see, he’s going to tell the story from Maleficent’s point of view. In fact, it’ll be called MALEFICENT.

She was always the most interesting character in that story, but we never knew why she hated those three little fairy wenches… or what indignity she suffered at the hands of Aurora’s parents. Yeah, I’m on board… if only it ends with Maleficent with a sword in her heart in dragon form. Cuz that’ll rule. Think about how long this plotline was carried out over. She has quite a tale to tell. Let’s see where it pops up in Burton’s filmography. We’re hearing that DARK SHADOWS is stumbling a bit… Let’s see what Tim does next, he has some interesting choices before him.

This sounds like fantastic news. I’ve already been very impressed with Burton‘s work with Disney thus far (I’m chomping at the bit to see his take on Alice in Wonderland) but for him to tell a classic Disney tale from the point of view of the villain, well, I am 1000% on board. The notion of this movie idea reminds me of the short story that Neil Gaiman wrote that tells the Snow White story from the point of view of the “evil queen”. Gaiman‘s story is titled Snow, Glass, Apples and can be read in its entirety HERE. If Tim Burton is able to do for Sleeping Beauty what Gaiman did for Snow White with his short story then I have no doubt that Burton‘s Maleficent will be a smash hit!

Johnny Depp Pays A Surprise Visit To Comic-Con

After the Internets went WILD over the release of the first trailer for Tim Burton‘s new Disney film Alice In Wonderland this past Wednesday, it was assumed that the trailer would be the central focal point of the film’s presence at San Diego Comic-Con taking place this weekend. As was assumed, Tim Burton was on hand to personally show the video footage at Comic-Con yesterday … but he brought along a surprise guest with him. Johnny Depp shocked fans by popping up on stage to say hello … before he, almost immediately, disappeared and left the premises:

English heartthrob Robert Pattinson wasn’t due to arrive in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center until later in the afternoon, but he was in real danger of being upstaged by the screams that met Johnny Depp’s surprise appearance Thursday morning at the first panel of the day at Comic-Con International. Depp, dressed in a white shirt and black vest, was on hand to support director Tim Burton, who unveiled a 3-D teaser trailer for his upcoming “Alice in Wonderland,” due out in March. The film draws from a cross-section of Lewis Carroll’s writing, including the Jabberwocky poem. The footage, which prominently featured Depp’s Mad Hatter, mostly highlighted the variety of the fantastic images Burton has assembled for the movie, created using a hybrid of live-action and animation and other techniques. At the urging of moderator Patton Oswalt, it was shown three separate times. “John and I worked together many times, but he’s never done a character with orange hair,” Burton dryly observed from the stage about the Hatter’s unusual aesthetic. “We scalped Carrot Top and took his hair….We realized once we got into it that we picked out every image from TV and cinema of red hair and it’s quite a distributing thing — from Bozo onward,” the director deadpanned.

According to E! News, Johnny uttered just 5 words before POOF! he was gone:

In fact, Depp stopped by, said five words and then totally just left. Here’s what went down: After screening a custom-made trailer for his Comic-Con fans, director Burton asked the crowd if they would like to meet the “imaginary friend” that follows him around. The crowd cheered and Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter, walked onstage in a button-up shirt and fitted black vest. He had long bangs sweeping the side of his face, and wore a thick leather bracelet. After several moments of cheering, Depp whispered into the mic: “Hey. Happy to be here.” And then, poof, he was gone. Moderator Patton Oswalt told the crowd that Depp could reappear later in the day, so “be nice to every guy you see dressed like Jack Sparrow.”

The ONLY person who could upstage Robert Pattinson these days is Johnny Depp … and I kinda love that he just showed up to say hello before running as fast as he could from the venue. Brills. But, getting back to Wonderland, the official poster artwork for the film has been released and features the promo photos that we saw a few weeks ago. While they aren’t all that new, I think they’re worth a second look … as is a pretty cool photo of the Cheshire Cat who was featured in yesterday’s Comic-Con presentation of Alice in Wonderland
