Is It Time to Worry Yet?
First Look: The NEW ThunderCats

Back in June we learned that Warner Bros. was planning to make a whole new animated series based on the classic 80s cartoon ThunderCats. Last summer, we got our first look at the concept art for the new show … today, we get our first official look at how the characters will look in this new series. I’d be lying if, based on this first look, I didn’t say that I am starting to get worried about this new show.

Feel the magic, Hear the roar
A New Animated Version Of ‘ThunderCats’ Is On The Way

Last August we got to see the concept art for the proposed big screen animated movie based on the 80′s cartoon ThunderCats but since then, haven’t heard a peep about the project. Today, we learn exciting NEW ThunderCats news that is sure to excite fans of the original animated series. Warner Bros. Animation has announced that they will be releasing an entirely new animated TV series based on ThunderCats next year! The series will be the WB‘s first foray into anime, here is our first look at the new logo for the show as well as some deets about the series from the new press release:

Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) has begun production on “ThunderCats,” an all-new animated series for Cartoon Network, based upon the iconic 1980s action classic. “ThunderCats” is the newest series from WBA, joining “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” which was recently renewed for a third season, and the following forthcoming programs: “The Looney Tunes Show,” “MAD,” “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” and “Young Justice.” The announcement was made today by Sam Register, Executive Vice President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Animation. “In addition to being Warner Bros. Animation’s first anime series, ‘ThunderCats’ marks our most ambitious foray yet into fantasy,” said Register. “The realism and dynamic visual style we’ve achieved are sure to thrill viewers, and the cool weapons, vehicles and technology should help the show appeal to a diverse audience.” The 21st century reimagining of the series marks a creative collaboration between WBA and Studio4°C, one of the most vibrant animation studios in Japan, with credits including “The Animatrix,” “Gotham Knights” and “Halo Legends.” WBA is working closely with Studio4°C, utilizing the latter’s expertise to give the “ThunderCats” characters a new cutting-edge look while remaining true to the compelling storylines and mythology of the original series. “We at Studio4°C are excited to be in this creative partnership with Warner Bros. Animation to bring ‘ThunderCats’ to life,” said Eiko Tanaka, President and CEO, Studio4°C. “This collaboration combines the strengths of our two companies – high production values and great storytelling – toward reintroducing this classic fan-favorite to a new audience.” Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations. The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

OM-EFFFFFF-G!!! This is really exciting news! I can’t even tell you how big of a ThunderCats fan I am. When I was a Boy Scout, we named out little troop ThunderCats and based the patches we wore on our uniforms on the ThunderCats logo. When I was the Captain of the Safety Patrol in the 6th grade, I used to carry my Lion-O action figure around with me to help me adjudicate justice and ensure safety:

The new Lion-O bears some resemblance to the original look of the character but he has been updated for the 21st Century. After the jump, check out a new promo photo of the new Lion-O — leader of the ThunderCats

HO!!!!!!!!!
First Look: Concept Art For ‘ThunderCats’

Here’s a little nugget that I missed last week when 2009 San Diego Comic Con was in full swing … Movieline managed to get their paws on the first concept art promo images for the upcoming Warner Bros. production of the big screen adaptation of ThunderCats. Fans of the 80′s cartoon series recall that the show revolved around group of cat people heroes called ThunderCats (among them Lion-O, Panthro, Cheetara, Tygra, Wily Kit, Wily Kat and Snarf) who escaped their planet of Thundara and landed on Third Earth (presumably in the future) to battle the evil forces of Mum-Ra. Now, like much of the hallowed TV series out our collective youth, the story is being brought to the big screen. Here is our first look at the concept art for the ThunderCat leader Lion-O in all his glory:

Everyone has their own ’80s cartoon franchise that meant something to them, and mine was ThunderCats: The Rankin/Bass series followed of a race of humanoid felines from the planet Thundera, forced to evacuate after their home comes under siege by the fearsome Mutants of Plun-Darr (who looked a bit like reptilian Ernest Borgnines.) Yes, I still hold a fond place in my heart for Lion-O, Cheetara, Panthro, Tygra, Snarf and the rest, and so Warner Bros.’ announcement a while back of a Thundercats movie filled me with the warm, fuzzy feelings one typically associates with watching Saturday morning TV while eating peanut-butter-and-grape-jelly sandwiches. The script, written by Paul Sopocy, was to follow Lion-O’s origin myth from young cub to his anointment as Lord of the ThunderCats, and was to be directed by veteran art director Jerry O’Flaherty. In conjunction with our coverage of Comic-Con 2009, Movieline has obtained O’Flaherty’s never-before-seen ThunderCats concept art, demonstrating just how gorgeous and ambitious his vision for this production is.

HMMM … I’m comforted by the fact that the movie will be a CGI film but considering how crappy the CGI movie based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles turned out … well, I think we have cause for concern. After the jump, check out other artist renderings for the film including Mum-Ra‘s pyramid and Third Earth
