First Listen: The ‘Glee’ Version Of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, Destiny’s Child’s ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’

A couple of weeks ago we got our first look at the cast of Glee filming scenes for their upcoming Super Bowl episode and today we get our first listen of the Glee version of Thriller. The track will be mashed up with Heads Will Roll by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, so it’s not a Thriller cover exactly. The full song has yet to leak its way to the Internets but today we do get to hear a 1 minute preview medley of some of the songs featured in the Superbowl ep … including this Thriller mash up and Bills, Bills, Bills by Destiny’s Child.

First Look: ‘Glee’ Does Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’

On Saturday we learned that Glee is planning a return of Gwyneth Paltrow, the debut of Lady Gaga‘s new single Born This Way and an ode to Justin Bieber in the upcoming second half of their season season. Today, courtesy of Spoiler TV, we get our first look at the cast of Glee filming a marching band performance of their version of Michael Jackson‘s classic single and iconic music video Thriller.

The post-Super Bowl XLV episode
‘Glee’ Plans To Pay Homage To Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’

Brace yourselves Michael Jackson fans … Glee is planning to put their spin on one of Michael Jackson‘s biggest songs ever! Entertainment Weekly magazine is reporting that the first post-Super Bowl XLV episode of 2011 will feature MJ‘s Thriller as one of the ep’s big musical numbers … and not only that but the song will be mashed-up with another as-yet unannounced song. That’s right, arguable the most famous MJ song will get the Glee treatment next year:

A Glee source confirms to EW exclusively that Glee will be tackling Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” for their post-Super Bowl episode…but with a twist. The Jackson classic will be performed as a mash-up with another song, yet to be chosen. But the supersized episode, which our source says will be the most expensive in Glee history and likely one of televsion’s priciest episodes ever, will also feature covers of tunes by Black Eyed Peas, Lady Antebellum, and Katy Perry. Whew. I’m already worn out, and yet there’s more. Although “Thriller” is featured in the episode, it will not be a Michael Jackson tribute episode. Nor will it be a tribute to Bruce Springsteen, as rumors have suggested. In fact, our source says that the only pop star truly considered for the Super Bowl episode was Sir Elton John (expect a John tribute episode as part of Glee‘s back nine episodes). The post-Super Bowl episode will instead keep with the evening’s sports theme and focus on the local football championship and Sue Sylvester’s cheerleading regionals (the “Thriller” mash-up will be played during halftime of the onscreen pigskin game). Basically, it will be a classic episode of Glee, but just bigger and better; Gleeks can also expect appearances from season two fan favorites: Blaine (Darren Criss) and Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones).

Um … and let’s not forget BRITNEY SPEARS! You may recall that we learned in September that our dear Britney will be appearing on Glee in a sizable acting role in the episode of Glee that will air just after the Super Bowl XLV next year … so if that claim is still valid, then Britney *should* be appearing in this Thriller episode. HMMM. I guess we’ll have to wait and see about that but we do know now that Glee will take on Thriller … which should make a lot of people happy AND a lot of people not so happy. Which team are you? Are you excited that Glee will be doing Michael Jackson‘s Thriller?

First Listen: Imogen Heap, ‘Thriller’

Imogen Heap, who is one of my fave female singers of all time, paid a visit to the Dermot O’Leary radio show on BBC Radio 2 this past weekend and performed a live piano version of Michael Jackson‘s hit song Thriller. Now, anyone who is at all familiar with Imogen Heap should be well aware of her musical style and can appreciate the way she transformed the song into one of her own … for those of you unfamiliar with Imogen, her cover of Thriller can give you an idea of just how amazing she is:

Because we are just a few days away from Hallowe’en, MJ‘s Thriller is getting a lot of play all over the place … which is why I think it was very smart of Imogen to cover it on this radio show. Unfortch, I couldn’t find a way to download the track but after the jump you can hear it in full in a You Tube video that has been made available online …

"Michael Jackson was a human being, but dammit, he was a king."
Madonna & Janet Jackson Pay Tribute To Michael Jackson At The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards opened up with a touching tribute by Madonna for the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. In what seemed like a semi-off-the-cuff address, Madonna delivered a speech that sought to highlight the similarities that she shared with Michael Jackson in an attempt to outline what went wrong with his life. While some felt that the speech focused too much on her (and, to be honest, I can understand why), I personally feel it was a touching tribute that was very Madonna (right down to the chastisement to the viewing audience that “we abandoned Michael Jackson” with the implication being that we are somewhat to blame for losing him) … and very well suited for MJ‘s memory. Here are a few photos of Madonna on stage delivering her tribute address:

Michael Jackson, who was not only one of the most influential forces in MTV’s history but also provided its Video Music Awards with some of its most irreverent moments, got reverential treatment Sunday as Madonna and his sister Janet provided emotional tributes — one through words, one through song. It was a tender, special moment — a rarity for the Video Music Awards. But the mood didn’t last for long, thanks in part to another onstage outburst from Kanye West. Madonna kicked off the show at Radio City Music Hall with a poignant speech about her relationship with Michael Jackson, which began when she was a youngster idolizing the then-child star, then morphed into a friendship when both were at the apex of their careers, and later, grew distant. Madonna lamented the negative publicity that dogged him in his later years. “Sometimes, we have to lose things before we can truly appreciate them,” said Madonna, dressed in black. “Yes, Michael Jackson was a human being, but yes, he was a king,” she told the celebrity-studded crowd, which included Michael’s brother Jermaine and father Joe Jackson. “Long live the king.”

Once Madonna stopped talking about her, she really let her personal feelings about Michael Jackson come to the forefront of her speech and honestly honored his memory. After the jump, watch video of Madonna delivering her address (along with a full transcript of her speech) and watch video of Janet Jackson and her troupe of dancers paying homage to MJ in their own way — in song and dance …
