Total ‘Eclipse’ Of The Art

And so … the day that so many have hoped and prayed for finally arrives … The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opened in theaters yesterday and I decided to make the trek out, brave the screaming crowds and see the film for myself. I managed to cajole my good friend Josh Z. to come along with me. As a straight dude who hadn’t read any of the books or seen any of the movies, I thought he would be the PERFECT person to go with me. Well, okay, actually he was the only person who agreed to accompany me (which, I suspect, was due in large part to the fact that he had never read/seen anything Twilight-related before). So off we went to see The Twilight Saga: Eclipse:

In all honesty, the movie wasn’t all that great … but I place most of the blame on the source material. I’ve said it many times before, the Twilight books written by Stephenie Meyer are pretty bad … but the movies are a bit better. I honestly felt that Eclipse was the best movie they’ve made thus far, primarily because of the inclusion of the werewolves. The story isn’t that inventive but seeing the werewolves in action was the best part for me. And, of course, the best werewolf of the bunch is Jacob Black … who spends 80% of his scenes in the film half-nekkid. While Eclipse didn’t blow me away as a cinematic masterpiece, the sight of Taylor Lautner‘s chiseled body makes the film absolutely worth seeing. If you let yourself go, Eclipse can be a lot of fun … but I still can’t get over the ridiculous melodrama. If they toned that part down A LOT, I think people could take the movies more seriously. But, the screaming fans really love the melodrama so … in it stays. Having read all of the Twilight books, I really wish the story had ended with Eclipse. Breaking Dawn has to be one of the worst books I’ve ever read in my life … I am so scared of how the 2-part movie will turn out. But, that is a worry for another day … Eclipse is ok, I’m glad I saw it. I don’t think I need to see it again … tho, another round of Lautner‘s abs does sound appealing ;)

This afternoon, David and I are going to see the musical In the Heights at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. We missed seeing it on Broadway so we’re excited to see it here. Hope YOU have a great Thursday, y’all!

On track to make up to $200 million thru the weekend alone
‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Makes $30 Million In One Night

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third film in the hugely successful Twilight Saga film franchise, managed to break the box office record for midnight showings when it opened in a record number of standard AND IMAX movie theaters at 12:00 AM Wednesday June 30 bringing in about $30 million from just the midnight showings alone … it reportedly ended up making over $60 million by the end of the day! The previous record for midnight showings was $26.3 million when The Twilight Saga: New Moon (the second film in the Twilight Saga film franchise) opened last November. If this frantic rate continues, it is being estimated that Eclipse could make up to $200 million at the box office by this coming Monday!

Hard-core “Twilight” fans have set another box office record. “Eclipse,” the third movie based on the best-selling vampire romance novels, sold more than $30 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada Tuesday night in shows that started at or soon after midnight. Distributor Summit Entertainment is still calculating the exact total, a spokesman said. The previous record for midnight screening ticket sales of $26.3 million was set by the last “Twilight” movie, “New Moon,” in November 2009. Grosses from midnight screenings are usually a sign of early fan enthusiasm for a movie, a category in which “Twilight” undeniably excels, as evidenced by the near-hysterical interest in stars Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart at events like last week’s premiere. “Eclipse” has the advantage of being the first “Twilight” movie to open in the summer and also the first to play on Imax screens — 193 total — which carry higher ticket prices. However, “Eclipse” also easily broke the previous record for midnight ticket sales in the summer: $22.2 million for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” last summer. More than $1 million of “Eclipse” ticket sales Tuesday night came from Imax screens. With a record amount of money already in hand, the question now for distributor Summit Entertainment is whether “Eclipse” will be a bigger hit than “New Moon” or if it will end up with a similar total domestic gross of about $300 million. Since most people are off of work Monday for the July 4 holiday, “Eclipse” is expected to gross a huge amount of money in its first six days, likely about $180 million and possibly as much as $200 million.

You know, I’m a bit of a skeptic sometimes so I don’t really think that Eclipse will get to the $200 million mark by Monday … but that being said, I’ve also learned not to underestimate the buying power of frantic Twihards. While I don’t expect that goal to be reached in just 6 days, I wouldn’t really be surprised if it did. I got to see Eclipse for myself last night so my review is coming. I will say that I felt Eclipse was the best movie so far in the franchise so … yeah. $30 million in one night, possibly $200 million in under a week … what do y’all think, is the movie worth generating this much money? Did YOU see Eclipse yet?

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Premieres In Hollywood

Pretty much everyone and their mother (literally) was at LA Live in downtown LA last night for the Hollywood (and LA Film Festival) premiere of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Not only was pretty much ever actor even remotely associated with the Twilight films in the hiz last night but so, too, were hordes of fans who had camped out for DAYS just to get tickets to attend last night’s premiere. Here are photos of Twilight stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner (currently on the cover of this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine) on the red carpet last night and some deets from the event:

Monica Siegel and her two friends dropped a total of $2,500 and flew hundreds of miles to camp out for four days on a patch of sidewalk in downtown Los Angeles with the hope that they might see one of the heartthrob stars of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” Their gamble paid off — and then some. Siegel, 22, of Fennville, Mich., was giddy with excitement after she not only nabbed a prime spot near the red carpet to swoon over the movie’s stars, but also was one of just a few dozen selected to take in the film inside with the stars of the blockbuster vampire series. “It’s completely worth every bit of it,” Siegel said after learning she had scored the premiere seats. “I’m freaking out!” Siegel said the entire experience was great but the best part was seeing the movie with the people who made it. “Kristen (Stewart) was amazing. She actually talked with us and paid attention to what we were saying instead of rushing by. The whole night is one big, happy memory,” Siegel said. Siegel, 21-year-old Amanda Willis of Dallas, and 25-year-old Melissa Moorhead of Seattle were among thousands of so-called “Twi-hards” who had flocked to the Nokia Theatre at the L.A. Live entertainment complex since early this week, camping out in a specially designated tent city for a fleeting glimpse of stars such as Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Up to 9,000 people were issued wristbands for a chance to see the film. At least 550 early birds, like Siegel, were ensured a spot along the red carpet, which was black for the occasion. Celebrities working their way down the carpet before the premiere were swarmed with screaming, frantic fans. Stewart, who plays Bella, took the fandemonium in stride. “It’s really only seemingly crazy when the movies come out, and you want that. I usually live a normal life,” Stewart said. Lautner, who plays werewolf Jacob, was asked if he ever wished he was less popular. “I don’t think I’m popular. I think it’s the character,” Lautner said. “I’m grateful to be here, and I’m grateful for the fans.” Pattinson, who plays vampire Edward, said of the frenzy: “I tune it all out ’til later. You get used to it, but it’s still a struggle.” Dakota Fanning, who plays the vampire Jane, said she was amazed by the fan presence — even in comparison with what she has seen in her own childhood acting career. “It’s really exciting. I don’t think I’ll ever be part of something like this for the rest of my life,” she said. “It’s really kind of surreal.” AEG, which owns L.A. Live and distributed the premiere wristbands with Summit Entertainment, screened “New Moon” for fans Tuesday night. On Wednesday, the film’s actors, Peter Facinelli, Billy Burke, Julia James and Jackson Rathbone, distributed hamburgers, CDs and makeup in the tent city. “It’s not very often in this business that you get to come out here and do something like this,” Burke said. “The fans of these movies are so gracious and lovely. It’s great to do anything we can.” Stephanie Tregea, 19, drove 500 miles from Upper Lake, in Northern California, to attend the premiere. She wore a black T-shirt that said “Team Carlisle,” and held a sign that read: “My cat died while I’ve been in line. (Peter, comfort me during this sadness).” It got her an extended embrace from Facinelli, who plays Cullen patriarch Carlisle. Tregea said she is concerned about a Twilight jinx, because her dog died as she waited in line for the “New Moon” premiere last year. She debated not seeing the next installment. “It’s been hectic and stressful because there’s a lot of people,” said Tregea, who alternated camping out with sleeping in a hotel room shared with two friends. Amanda Belcher, 27, a mom from Scranton, Pa., who took a week off work at a public affairs agency to camp out for the premiere, said the experience was worth it. “It’s a great way to bring people together,” Belcher said. “It’s like intense friendship building.”

Dang, that’s devotion. I only camped out over night once (in an alley in downtown Detroit for tix to a tiny Tori Amos club show at my fave Detroit venue St. Andrew’s Hall back in 1998) but I think I can appreciate the devotion felt by these fans. Thousands of people waited countless hours in line yesterday just to buy an iPhone 4 … fans are fans, and we are all fans of something. I’m just glad to hear that these kids (and moms) who camped out for so long managed to be successful in their endeavor to get up close to their fave Twilight stars. And speaking of … check out some photos of some of the celebs who walked the red carpet last night, after the jump …

The big 3 grace another cover of 'EW' mag
The ‘Twilight’ Trinity Does ‘Entertainment Weekly’ Magazine . . . Again

Back in November of 2009, on the eve of the release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the principal stars of The Twilight Saga movie franchise — Kirsten Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner — graced the cover of Entertainment Weekly magazine. This week, on the eve of the release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the Twilight Trinity again grace the cover of EW mag … but this time, they get 2 different covers … that they have to share:

As the highly-anticipated Twilight Saga: Eclipse prepares to descend on theaters June 30, stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner get together in L.A. for a frank discussion about the roles they play within the Twilight universe — both on screen and off. They also open up about their Oprah appearance, staying fit, and what it took to film a climactic scene in Eclipse, in which the three characters are forced to wait out a blizzard in incredibly close proximity.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: One scene fans have been dying to see takes place in the tent during the snowstorm. Jacob warms up Bella with his body because Edward is cold-blooded and can’t do it himself.
LAUTNER: The tent scene is probably my favorite, because it’s the first time Edward and Jacob are actually able to connect and understand each other.

EW: How many takes did you go through to get that scene?
LAUTNER: Two days originally to film it, and then a full day of reshoots.

EW: Why?
PATTINSON: [The director] wanted it to be more erotic. Seriously.
STEWART: It’s true. In the book there’s a serious sexual tension. As I’m sleeping, Jacob is staring over my vulnerable body, and he’s naked in this fucking sleeping bag because you heat up faster that way, and Jacob and Edward are leveling with each other.

EW: Taylor, you and Rob have some pretty serious confrontations in this movie.
LAUTNER: Some of those scenes were pretty hard for me. I think we ruined a couple of takes in front of the house and in the tent. It’s just, I don’t know, I have a hard time looking at him…
STEWART: Ha! “I have such a hard time looking at him”!
LAUTNER: [Laughs] I wasn’t finished. He and I were this close to each other — we are literally, like, an inch away — and we’re screaming at each other.
STEWART: And about to kiss…
LAUTNER: A couple of moments it felt like that.
PATTINSON: Every single time we had to do a threatening thing to each other — for one thing, you always have your shirt off, and so in the tent scene I literally grabbed your breast. And it’s very difficult to remain in the moment. Also, in that tent scene, I can’t really get over the fact that the word thought sounds like fart.
STEWART: The word thought does not sound like fart.
PATTINSON: It does.
STEWART: Maybe because you are an English person.
PATTINSON: The opening line of that scene is “Can you at least keep your farts to yourself?” I couldn’t quite get over that.

The full EW interview can be read in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly which is on newsstands NOW! After the jump, check out a photo of the big 3 that is featured inside the mag …

Continues to promote The Twilight Saga: Eclipse overseas
Kristen Stewart Apologizes For Her Rape Comments

Kristen Stewart is doing a bit of apologetic back-peddling today as she issues an apology statement in regards to comments that she made in a new British Elle magazine interview where she compared being photographed by the paparazzi to being raped. Stewart started her day promoting her new film The Twilight Saga: Eclipse in Seoul, South Korea with her BFF and co-star Taylor Lautner but she spent the rest of her day doing damage control over her irresponsible rape comments … so, yeah, it was a pretty bizzy Thursday for K. Stew. Here are photos from the Eclipse press conference in Seoul and the deets about her apology:

No sooner did excerpts from July’s British Elle make their way to the Internet on Wednesday than the blogosphere exploded in outrage. In an offending quote, Twilight saga star Kristen Stewart compared paparazzi photos of herself to images of a woman being raped. Almost immediately, everyone from fans to spokespeople for rape victims’ advocacy organizations were publicly criticizing the actress. “I really made an enormous mistake – clearly and obviously,” Stewart, currently in Korea to promote the new installment of the Twilight series Eclipse, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “And I’m really sorry about my choice of words.” Stewart, 20, is not known as one to mince words. “I’ve made stupid remarks before, and I’ve always reasoned: ‘Whatever. They can think what they want,’ ” she says. But in this instance, the Los Angeles-born actress feels compelled to address the situation. ” ‘Violated’ definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought,” she notes.

On the one hand, I can understand why many folks were offended by Kristen‘s comments … comparing being photographed to being violently raped was a huge misstep on her part. That being said, the girl is still very young and we are all well aware of her awkwardness in interviews. I, for one, never took her comments seriously … then again, I can’t possibly understand what her comments might’ve meant to people who have truly been violated by rape. I think it was the right thing to do for her to issue a public apology quickly … I’m very sure she understands her mistake and is sorry for it. I know I like to poke a bit of fun at Kristen Stewart (mainly because she is a young celeb and that’s kinda what I like to do) but I have to commend her for speaking up and acknowledging her mistake in this instance. Here’s hoping she will, from here on out, be more aware of the things that come out of her mouth and how her words may effect others.

The Good, The Bad
‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Releases 2 New Posters

With just a wee bit over a month to go before The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hits theaters, Summit Entertainment has released a couple of new promo movie posters to remind us all that the film will be show in IMAX theaters as well as traditional movie theaters. Here is our first look at a strikingly serious poster of Jacob Black (played by Taylor Lautner), Bella Swan (played by Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (played by Robert Pattinson):

As far as Eclipse posters go, this one ain’t too bad. The Photoshopping to make the faces look ominous works for me. All the dark shading draws attention away from the bad Bella wig, Edward actually looks a bit scary (as he should, what with being a vampire and all) and Jacob looks as hot as ever. I like this poster a lot! After the jump, check out a second Eclipse in IMAX poster that features a group of the bad guys …

LMAO!!
Behold: The Most Awkward Photo Of The ‘Twilight’ Cast Ever Taken

In support of their upcoming sequel film The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner posed for a photo to be published alongside an article in the pages of USA Today. Having seen quite a few photos of the Twilight cast in various configurations, I have to say that this photo has to be THE most awkward photo ever taken of the Twilight actors … check it out:

LOL! Not a single one of these 3 looks good in this photo. Kristen‘s pose is just ridiculous, I have no idea WTF? R. Pattz is doing and Tay Tay looks uncomfortably constipated. This photo is just … terrible. I have no idea how it got selected for publication but it is just … so wrong. If you have the inclination, you can read the USA Today article HERE … but it’s not nearly as entertaining as this photo is horrendously bad.
