Trent Reznor Reacts To His Academy Award Nomination

Earlier today we learned the THRILLING news that my man Trent Reznor garnered an Academy Award nomination, along with collaborator Atticus Ross, for his work scoring the film The Social Network. Right now we get to hear from T Rez himself about how it feels to be an Oscar nominee in new comments he made to Entertainment Weekly magazine.

Trent Reznor Talks About His Golden Globe Award Nomination

Entertainment Weekly magazine has just released a new interview they did with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails, How to Destroy Angels) about his recently announced Golden Globe award nomination for the score he composed with collaborator Atticus Ross for the film The Social Network. At the tail end of the interview, Reznor confirms publicly for the first time that he is a new father … news that, I’m sure, will come as a very happy surprise to many of his loyal fans.

My Fave Movies Of 2010

On Tuesday I posted my Top Albums of 2010 and yesterday I was planning to post my list of my fave films of the year … but I had to push back one day so I could see one more film to determine if it was worthy of making my Top 10 list. And so, without further ado, here is my personal list of the Top Movies of 2010.

My Top Albums Of 2010

It is that time of the year when I compile my list of favorite albums of the year … and what a diverse year of music it was. To be honest, I really wasn’t wowed by the music of 2010 until pretty late in the year. Some albums snuck up on me as one of the year’s faves, others surprised me entirely … and, of course, some were surefire loves as soon as they were released. Here is my list of the 10 Best Albums of 2010.

2 Characters, 1 Actor
David Fincher Explains How Armie Hammer Portrays Both Winkelvoss Twins In ‘The Social Network’

There has been a bit of confusion over the way the roles of twin brothers Tyler and Cameron Winkelvoss were played in the David Fincher film The Social Network so Entertainment Weekly went right to the source to get the matter sorted out. The twin roles were played by one actor — Armie Hammer — with the help of a body double — Josh Pence — and a whole lotta of CGI:

Audiences are seeing double this weekend in The Social Network, which features two characters based on the real life Winklevoss twins — a pair of 6’5″ future-Olympian rowers who claim that Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) swiped their idea for a social networking site. Stick around for the end credits and you’ll see that the twins are actually played by two actors, Armie Hammer and Josh Pence. Yet they look — and sound — completely identical. How did they do that? According to director David Fincher, it was simple — although keep in mind that this is the same guy who put Brad Pitt’s face on a baby in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Hammer played the main twin in each shot. For shots that included both twins at the same time, Pence stood in for the second twin; Hammer later went into a studio, where he strapped his head into a harness to film that twin’s face and voice, which was then digitally superimposed over Pence’s face in the film. The result is a sort of hybrid actor with Hammer’s head and Pence’s body. Intricate split-screens and rotoscoping were also used for some shots. Piece of cake, right? “After Benjamin Button, you go, ‘It can be done,’” says Fincher. “Give us a case of Red Bull and a weekend, and we’ll figure this out.” The director insists that he didn’t use all this CGI wizardry just for kicks. “For a long time, I held out for this idea that we were going to find two 6’5″ 220-pound scullers who were going to be able to act,” he laughs. “So we looked and we looked and we looked and finally, probably about four weeks out from shooting, I just said, this is crazy. We’re never going to be able to get [it]. We need an actor. We need one person to play two people.” Fincher found that person in Armie Hammer, an actor who shared both the Winklevoss’ build and high-society charm. (In real life, Hammer is heir to the Armand Hammer oil fortune.) But the director still needed another actor to play the twin stand-in, so he made an appeal to Pence, an in-demand male model. “I said, “Look, if you agree to do this, all the over-the-shoulders are going to be you, you gotta learn all the lines, you gotta be there for every shoot day,’” recalls Fincher, “‘And when push comes to shove, I’m gonna lop your head off and put Armie’s head on you. It’s gonna be a completely thankless task.’ He’s so awesome. He said, ‘I’d love to do it.’”

And there you have it … one actor, one body double = two twin characters. To be honest, I had no idea that Hammer played both roles until David noticed his name in the credits listed for both Winkelvii. Now I need to see The Social Network again just so I can pay attention to the way the twin roles are handled. It’s a credit to David Fincher that I had no idea there was any CGI involved at all the first time I saw it. If anything, the way that the Winkelvoss twins are portrayed in the film is Oscar-worthy as well.

World Domination
‘The Social Network’ Premieres In Paris

The #1 movie in the US this weekend was the fantastic David Fincher film The Social Network … but many of the film’s principal stars weren’t here in the US over the weekend, they were in Paris doing a bit of promo work at the French premiere of their film. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals at Cinema Gaumont Marignan yesterday for the Parisian premiere of Le Social Network:

In addition to the film’s actors Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, the French premiere of The Social Network also included director David Fincher, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and real life twins Cameron and Tyler Winkelvoss (who are played in the film by a singular actor and a body double). I have to say … I am not surprised in the least to see the Winkelvoss twins hopping on board The Social Network fame train because, as I understand it, they have been lookin’ for fame for a very long time. As I said in my review of the film, I foresee big things for this film come Awards Season next year … but I am curious to hear how the film will play in other countries. Did any of y’all see the film after I did on Friday night? What do YOU think of The Social Network?

Battle Of The ‘Network’ Stars

Last night David and I made our way out to see the new David Fincher film The Social Network and I have to say, without one bit of exaggeration, that it is the best film that I’ve seen all year and will likely be the best film I’ll see before Awards season next year. I know the film has been getting a lot of rave reviews but I have to join the chorus … from the direction, to the writing, to the acting, to the music — The Social Network is even better than the hype it’s been receiving:

I remember posing the first photos from the film’s production in November of last year and commenting on how uninteresting I thought the film would be. And to be honest, without Fincher‘s expert direction and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin‘s fantastic script, I’m certain The Social Network would be an incredibly boring movie about all the in-fighting that went on in the wake of the creation of Facebook. Instead, The Social Network is the most interesting, most compelling film I’ve seen in a long time. I am certain the film, at the very least, will be showered in Oscar noms … particularly for Fincher and Sorkin … but very probably for Jesse Eisenberg as well for his outstanding portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. His acting performance is riveting … and expertly delivered. The film’s score, by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, is just perfection … my guess is that TR and AR might get an Oscar nom of their own. Additionally, I’m just AMAZED that one actor played both roles of the Winklevoss twins (with the help of a body double/stand in). I don’t even know how that feat was accomplished but … dang, impressive. In all honesty, The Social Network feels like a very long movie (it felt like a long movie even before the Sean Parker character is first introduced) but the storytelling is so compelling that you can’t help but want more. If you were just to read the facts (or alleged facts) about the creation of Facebook you might be interested for a while but I doubt you’d find it very compelling … it is the marriage of expert direction, superb writing and impressive acting that makes The Social Network so good. I’m really curious to hear what those of you out there who saw the movie think. David and I haven’t been able to stop talking about it … and while it’s not a film I think I’ll need to see over and over again, I wouldn’t mind seeing it one more time just to take it all in again. Mark my words, this movie will make a big splash come Awards season next year … and rightly so. It’s good, y’all. It’s really damn good.

Tonight, my friends Angi, Darion and I are going out to see Buffyverse alum James Marsters and his band Ghost of the Robot play a concert here in SoCal … which should be a total blast. All 3 of us are big Buffy/Marsters fans and none of us have met him yet … we’re hoping to remedy that situation tonight :) Happy Saturday!!

Trent Reznor Releases A Free Sampler From The Soundtrack Of ‘The Social Network’

On Tuesday Trent Reznor announced on his official Twitter profile that he would be releasing new music this week and today he makes good on that promise. TR is making available, starting today, a FREE 5 Track Sampler EP of songs taken from the soundtrack he created for the upcoming film The Social Network. Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross have created 19 songs for the soundtrack and starting RIGHT NOW you can click HERE and download 5 of those tracks. Additionally, TR is offering a variety of inexpensive ways to purchase the physical version of the soundtrack and has partnered with Amazon to offer the entire disc for digital download at the extremely low price of $2.99:

The Social Network soundtrack will be released digitally on Tuesday September 28th with physical formats to follow in October. You can pre-order standard CD, Blu-ray (audio only 5.1 surround and high resolution stereo) and 2 disc 180g vinyl formats now. All preorders include an instant 5 song sampler download and a full digital album delivered by email on 9/28. Standalone digital will be available for purchase EXCLUSIVELY on Amazon.com at a promotional rate of $2.99 for a 48 hour period starting 12:01am on 9/28. Digital purchases will begin HERE 9/30 at 12:01am.

Here is our first look at the album artwork for the 5 Track Sampler EP which is available now and a message from TR about the soundtrack release:

This is what Atticus and I have been working on for the last few months. We had a great time working with David Fincher on this and the film turned out excellent – something we’re very proud of. It opens in theatres Oct 1 and you should check it out.

Musically, this all came out of our secret laboratory – electronic in basis, but mostly organic sounding. Lots of experiments and emphasis on sound fraying around the edges while focusing on the proper emotional tone for the various scenes.

Regarding the purchase options, sorry about the “clunkiness” of not offering the full record digital download pre-sale (and having to visit Amazon). My agenda was to be able to offer this for the lowest possible price and this was the best way to achieve that. Amazon has been a great partner with past projects and I appreciate your understanding.

- Trent Reznor, 9.16.10

Judging by just the 5 tracks being offered right now (for FREE) I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the sound and tone of the soundtrack. These tracks definitely have that Nine Inch Nails feel to them but in an updated way. As you might expect, there is an intense beauty to these dark and somber instrumentals. I applaud TR for continuing to offer his work for free in many cases and at a very inexpensive price point in all other cases. Because his music is being released via his Null Corporation, he has the control of his work that allows this sort of release philosophy … as a fan, I am most thankful. So, what are you waiting for … click HERE and download these tracks immediately. I think you will love them as much as I do. I cannot wait to hear the soundtrack in its entirety.

‘The Social Network’ Releases A Full-Length Movie Trailer

Last month we got to check out the first teaser movie trailer for the upcoming David Fincher film The Social Network (aka The Facebook Movie). Last week we got to check out the second teaser trailer which is an updated version of the first teaser trailer. Today we get to check out what can be called the film’s first full length trailer which shows actual scenes from the film … here are a few screencaps:

Now this trailer has to be my fave one thus far. It starts out by showing just how much we have all integrated Facebook in our day to day personal lives and then it flashes back to 2003 and gives us glimpses of what was happening behind the scenes as Facebook was being created. Coupled with a very eerie version of the Radiohead song Creep and you’ve got yourself a pretty kickass trailer. Check it out in full, after the jump …
