Last night, David and I decided to go to the movies and we chose the #1 movie in the country, The Roommate. Now, despite the questionable things we heard about the flick, I’ve been looking forward to this film ever since it went into production last year. Is The Roommate the best movie ever? No. But, it’s fun as Hell and deffo worth your time.

In May of 2009 we saw photos of Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester filming scenes for her new Single White Female-esque movie The Roommate … in September of 2009 we got our first look at a promo pic from the film. Today, a year later, we get our first look at the first movie trailer for The Roommate:

Basically this is the film version of that one episode of Gossip Girl where Blair Waldorf gets SO obsessed with Serena van der Woodsen that she decides to hurt/maim/kill Dan Humphrey, Georgina Sparks and anyone else dumb enough to get in her way … but, you know, with different character names. Last May we saw a few photos of Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester filming scenes for her new movie called The Roommate which is remake of sorts of the creepy 90′s movie Single White Female which starred Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bridget Fonda. Today, Entertainment Weekly brings us our first look at Meester and co-star Minka Kelly in The Roommate which clearly shows that Meester is the crazy whackjob obsessed with her college roommate Kelly:

Loved 1992’s Single White Female? Then you’ll love 2010’s Leighton Meester-Minka Kelly thriller, The Roommate. Like Female, Roommate focuses on obsession: The film follows a college freshman (Meester) who develops an unhealthy fascination with her roommate (Kelly). For her role, Meester says she went method, researching mental illness with the help of psychologists and films like 1974’s A Woman Under the Influence. The actress tried to keep her distance from cast members — and a litter of kittens being used for the film — in order to retain her character’s level of emotional aloofness. “You would think that that idea of playing somebody who’s out of control or lost touch with reality is somehow fun, but it was to a point of discomfort,” the actress says. “[My character] is completely delusional and it’s definitely a cause of a chemical imbalance, so that wasn’t the easiest and most enjoyable thing. Even in her most normal moments, she’s genuinely a disturbed person. She had very abnormal wheels turning at all times.” But will friends let Meester play psychiatrist, now that she’s garnered knowledge about mental health? Not quite, says Meester. “I don’t think they’ll want my advice after they see this movie.”

We already know that Leighton Meester can act in TV, music videos and other miscellaneous projects so it remains to be seen if she can hold her own on the big screen. Personally, I think she can handle it. Playing a psychotic, obsessive crazy sounds like a lot of fun … methinks she’ll do well in this role. Again, we’re being given a “new” movie based on an old movie but Single White Female was so fun the first time around, I’m kinda curious to see what this updated version will look like. This is one redux I’d be willing so watch.

Last month we saw photos of Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford on the NYC set of his new movie Twelve and today we get to see a few pics of GG star Leighton Meester (newly blondeish) on the LA set of her new film The Roommate. I understand the film is a new take on the premise of the creepily brills 90′s film Single White Female starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bridget Fonda. Here are pics of Leighton doing her thang on set:

Leighton will play Sara who gets saddled with a college roommate named Rebecca who invades her life and, presumably, tries to steal it/kill her … or some such variation on the theme. I understand that Leighton will be spending her Summer here in SoCal because she is also working on her as-yet-untitled debut album which is scheduled to be released this Fall. I’m not sure how I feel about her attempt at a singing career but I am intrigued by this new movie. Meh, it doesn’t sound like it’s going to win any awards but if watching Beyoncé go at it with Ali Later in Obsessed has taught me anything it’s never discount a terribly fun-looking terrible movie. The Roommate is due in theaters next year.
