Lea Michele May Star In The Film Adaptation Of ‘Spring Awakening’

We love Lea Michele and were a little disappointed when she didn’t score the highly desirable role of Eponine in the film adaptation of Les Miserables. (It did go to a great musical actress though, Samantha Barks instead of the rumored Taylor Swift.) News broke today though that Lea may have nabbed an equally coveted role in the film adaptation of the brilliant Spring Awakening. Are you familiar with the original German play? Think abortion, rape, suicide, masturbation and even S&M!!

‘Spring’ Has Sprung In LA

Last night David and I made our way to the Ahmanson Theater in downtown LA for the red carpet premiere of Spring Awakening, the hit Broadway musical that is currently on tour in this region of the country. Both David and I have seen the show in NYC with the original Broadway cast so we had high expectations for this touring production:

I feel I must preface my comments about the show we saw last night by saying the original Broadway production and cast managed to win 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical … that is tough to compete with. That said, this touring version of the show is good … just not great. Kyle Riabko, a pop singer who recently released his debut album (which features a duet with Liz Phair, BTW) and reminds me a bit of Jesse McCartney plays the male lead role of Melchoir and Christy Altomare plays the female lead Wendla. I’m sorry to say that, while each is very talented, I didn’t feel the passion that their roles require. I found them both apt singers but, again, there was no power to their voices to drive the emotionality home with the audience. I was very impressed with Blake Bashoff who plays Moritz and Sarah Hunt who plays Martha. They were each able to connect with their roles and offer the powerful performances to exude that emotional connection required of the story. There was a bit of “high school musical”ness to the performance but it could’ve been a result of opening night jitters. Also, the audience was an atrocious one for them to play to. The audience riotously laughed at the violent interplay between Melchoir and Wendla when he beats her (some in the audience thought it was “funny”) and, appallingly, someone let their phone ring for about 40 seconds without silencing it during a very quiet part of the performance. The gentleman who was sitting behind David and me was so obnoxiously loud that we really did not enjoy ourselves very much. I fear the rude audience may have had an effect on the players’ performances. In any event, I’m grateful for being able to see the show again. I’m sure diehard fans of Spring Awakening will be very pleased with this production. The show, itself, is spectacular. This time around I was able to really get into the story and found the whole experience much more enjoyable than the first time I saw it.

David and I were not able to stay for the VIP afterparty because we had to bolt for the airport to pick up his sister Eden who flew in for the weekend. We had to leave the theater as soon as we could. Much love and thanks goes out to Jason for inviting us out to the show, we had a great time!!

Tonight is Halloween … and I’m still not entirely sure what we’ve got planned. Steph and Alek are home so we will be seeing them for sure. Beyond that, I dunno … I do have a costume to wear tho … I’ll have pics tomorrow :)

The tour rolls into town
‘Spring Awakening’ Opens In LA

The hit Broadway musical Spring Awakening had its red carpet opening here in LA last night at the Ahmanson Theater. This touring version of the show, whose last stop was San Francisco, CA, has made its way to LA and premiered last night. Here are a few pics from some of the red carpet arrivals last night:

As you can see, some castmembers from The CW‘s 90210 came out for last night’s premiere. You may recall that the fictional kids at West Beverly High put on a performance of Spring Awakening at their school this season on the show. Interestingly enough, none of the 90210 actors who came out for last night’s premiere were actually involved with the fictional staging of the musical on 90210 (Jessica Lowndes‘s character Adrianna was supposed to play the lead but had to be replaced after she got cracked out on drugs … on the show). David and I were very lucky to attend last night’s premiere opening and I’ll have my review in my TV Guide post later in the day. While the group of celebs who came out for last night’s opening wasn’t necessarily stellar, there were a lot of fun people in the hiz to enjoy the fun last night. Spring Awakening will run at the Ahmanson Theater until December 7.

Preview ’90210′s Musical Episode

The CW was gracious enough to share a few preview photos from tomorrow’s episode, titled Wide Awake and Dreaming, of 90210 where West Beverly High alum Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) directs the new West Bev gang in their high school production of the hit Broadway musical Spring Awakening:

But, I know that some folks don’t like to read/see/hear about spoilers before the episodes air so I’m putting all the spoilery stuff behind the cut. After the jump, check out a few preview pics of tomorrow’s ep along with a short episode synopsis …

Hunter Parrish Joins ‘Spring Awakening’ On Broadway

Hunter Parrish, of Showtime‘s hit series Weeds fame, has officially begun his stint on Broadway as Melchior Gabor in the wildly successful show Spring Awakening. Here are a few pics of Hunter in his turn-of-the-century Melchior duds doin’ his thing:

Hunter Parrish, who was raised in the conservative Texas town of Plano, has played a pot dealer on TV and now has sex on stage. Well, not quite: It’s simulated. But the scene is one of the most talked about in the Tony Award-winning rock musical “Spring Awakening.” “It’s weird to, like, fake sex and put your parts up against someone else’s,” the 21-year-old actor says. “But I figured, ‘You know what? I’m going to be naked every night in New York, I might as well get used to it.’” His role in “Spring Awakening” certainly isn’t the first time Parrish has bared his bottom. In the acclaimed Showtime series “Weeds,” Parrish not only deals drugs and smokes, but also steals and drops trou as Mary-Louise Parker’s oldest son. In real life, though, he’s never inhaled. “I know that if I ever smoked pot I would probably become, like, a total pothead because I think I would like that,” he says. “I have, like, a chill personality, so that’s why I’m never going to start, because I don’t like to be dependent on anything. I don’t even drink coffee.” Never say never — to coffee, at least. Taking the stage eight days a week might wear him down. He could find himself addicted to a good French roast, like any other sleep-deprived Broadway actor in need of a caffeine fix. Parrish stifles a yawn during an interview with The Associated Press at a tapas restaurant in downtown Manhattan. It comes out of nowhere, though, since the rest of the time he’s a verbal dynamo, leaping animatedly into such eclectic topics as his celebrity crush (actress Amanda Seyfried), aversion to organized religion (he says it’s too hypocritical) and decision to wear a black rocker T-shirt instead of a “pretty-boy sweater” to lunch. The night before, he had officially stepped into his role as rebellious schoolboy Melchior Gabor in “Spring Awakening,” an adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s classic German drama about sexually repressed teens. It’s a career-defining move for Parrish, a loving son and liberal Christian, who has a surprisingly potent set of pipes. Again, he’s playing against his wholesome upbringing … Parrish possesses undeniable stage presence, and his angelic features — turquoise-colored eyes, high cheekbones, shaggy blond hair, choirboy smile — pop under bright lights. His singing voice is a rich tenor, gliding easily into falsetto in the ballad “Left Behind.” Producers sneaked him on stage — unofficially — several days ahead of his debut, however, and Parrish was more than a little nervous. “I was petrified! It was petrifying,” he says, but by the second performance, he adds, “I was like, ‘All right man, I’m ready!’ I was eager. That was great, because I just sort of was fueled, you know?” Parrish says Parker, his TV mom, sat in the audience Aug. 18 and ended up in tears. “She came up to my dressing room and she was crying and she was like, ‘I’m so proud of you. I can’t believe that you’re doing this. This is Broadway. You belong here,’” he recalls.

You know, I wasn’t too keen on Spring Awakening when I saw it with the original cast still intact, before it won all of those Tony Awards. For some reason, the show just didn’t grab me … but I can deffo see how Hunter Parrish would fit in perfectly with the cast for this show. Now, I have no idea what his singing sounds like but he deffo has the look to pull off the character. I might be amenable to seeing the show again to give it another go. I must confess, my wanting to see the show again might have more to do with that “butt” scene than anything else but … hey, whatever works, right? Hahahaha!
