'The Laws of Illusion' will hit stores in June!
Sarah McLachlan Announces The Release Of A New Album

Sarah McLachlan, who last released an album of new material 7 years ago (a disc called Afterglow), is announcing the release of a new album titled The Laws of Illusion to coincide with the return of Lilith Fair. As you may recall, we learned late last year that Lilith Fair would be hittin’ the road this Summer and Sarah Mc wants to capitalize on the tour with a new album. Back when Lilith Fair got started in the late 90′s, Sarah toured for 3 years on her 1997 album Surfacing … I suppose she felt it was time to tour with some new tunes. Here is the full text of the press release announcement about her new album:

Multi-platinum and Grammy-Award winning singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan is scheduled to release her first studio album of new material in 7 years THE LAWS OF ILLUSION on June 15th on Arista Records. The album is currently being recorded in Montreal and Vancouver with Sarah’s longtime collaborator/producer Pierre Marchand. Sarah’s new album THE LAWS OF ILLUSION will be released just weeks in advance of the kick off to Lilith Fair 2010, the historic all women touring festival, founded by McLachlan, which became one of the highest grossing touring festivals in the world. A special pre-order campaign for Sarah’s new album THE LAWS OF ILLUSION is available now exclusively at sarahmclachlan.com. Fans that pre-order her new album will be offered the added benefit of exclusive access to purchase Lilith Fair tickets before they are made available anywhere else, and additionally will receive an instant download of Sarah’s new song, “One Dream.” A resident of Vancouver, Sarah recently performed at the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics and wrote and recorded “One Dream,” which was used as part of NBC’s marketing campaign for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Click HERE to watch the video for “One Dream.”

Between 1997-1999, Lilith Fair enjoyed over 2 million fans in attendance and over $10 million dollars raised for national and local women’s charities. Lilith Fair 2010 features performances by Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, Erykah Badu, Sugarland, Heart, Norah Jones, Ke$ha, Corinne Bailey Rae, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Tegan and Sara, and many more! Visit www.lilithfair.com for tour details and more information.

Wee!! It’s about time that Sarah built herself a new mystery for us to enjoy. I’m not the biggest Sarah McLachlan fan but I really do enjoy many of her songs … most of which I got to hear many times in concert over the years. I’m anxious for new stuff, let me tell you. I would imagine that Sarah might be working thru some pain on this new album, especially since she split from her hubby Ashwin Sood back in 2008. Whatever the subject matter, I just hope the album is good. If Sarah plans to tour for the next 3 years on this new album alone … it better kick ass.

Chris Brown, Alica Keys and 'Alvin & the Chipmunks' win awards
The 2008 American Music Awards

Last night the American Music Awards were handed out on live TV at the Nokia Theater here in Los Angeles, CA. Stars of varying importance made their way into downtown LA last night to walk the red carpet, participate in the show or mug for the cameras in the press room afterward. Chris Brown was one of the night’s big winnersKanye West was one of the night’s biggest wieners … and Beyoncé, bless her heart, gave the best live performance of the night. Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals last night:

Here are a few pics from the show itself:

Here are a few pics from the press room and some deets about what went down at this years AMAs:

Chris Brown was the big winner at the American Music Awards on Sunday night, surprising himself most of all. “I don’t know what to say. I would have given it to Coldplay,” said Brown, who won artist of the year, male pop/rock artist and male soul/R&B artist. Kanye West, still sore at losing male rap/hip-hop artist last year, won the trophy this time – then said Lil Wayne deserved it more. “I want to give this award to Wayne,” he said. “If it was last year it would have been my award.” It was West’s second trophy of the night, following his win for rap/hip-hop album, for Graduation. “It’s our responsibility as musicians to push music to the point it was in the ’60s and ’70s,” he said. “I want to be Elvis.” Host Jimmy Kimmel, who had made West’s ego a running joke, quipped: “Elvis died on the toilet with half a jelly doughnut in his mouth. You may want to rethink that.”

Um, why does Kanye have to be so douchey? I mean, seriously. It’s like he just cannot stop himself from acting like a total a-hole on the public stage. I just don’t get it.

The show climaxed with Keys performing “Superwoman” with Queen Latifah and opera star Kathleen Battle, and ending with a large photo projected on a screen of incoming first lady Michelle Obama. In a big night for American Idol alums, Daughtry – winner of three trophies last year – picked up another this year for pop/rock group, while former Idol champ Jordin Sparks won for adult contemporary music, and Carrie Underwood won for country album for Carnival Ride. Taylor Swift, uncomfortably sharing L.A.’s Nokia Theatre auditorium with ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas, won for female country artist, and Rihanna got two awards for pop/rock female artist and female soul R&B artist … Music’s A-listers were out in force as the show featured blockbuster performances by Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Rihanna, West, birthday girl Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers, who also won the breakthrough artist award. And Justin Timberlake made a surprise appearance to introduce award of merit recipient Annie Lennox.

Much congrats to all the winners this year but, I gotta say, the “prestige” associated with winning an American Music Award seems to have diminished a bit — after all, the soundtrack to the movie Alvin and the Chipmunks took home an award last night.

For me, tho, the highlight was Beyoncé‘s live performance of her hit single Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It). Homegirl turned that mutha OUT! After the jump, watch video of her performance in full …

No longer Building a Mystery together
Sarah McLachlan & Ashwin Sood Are Dunzo!

Got some good news and some sad news for fans of Sarah McLachlan … on the upside, Sarah Mac is releasing a greatest hits album in early October which features two new songs U Want Me 2 and Don’t Give Up on Us … on the downside, those songs were inspired by Sarah‘s separation from her husband of 11 years, Ashwin Sood :( Looks like they’re dunzo, y’all:

The two new songs on Sarah McLachlan’s upcoming greatest hits album — “U Want Me 2″ and “Don’t Give Up on Us” — come from an extremely personal place. “I’m separating from my husband, so these are the songs about that,” McLachlan told Billboard.com. She’s been married to Ashwin Sood, who plays drums in her band, for 11 years. The couple, who reside in Vancouver, has two daughters, six-year-old India and Taja Summer, 14 months. “I wasn’t planning on saying anything,” McLachlan added, “but it’s gonna come out at some point. I haven’t said anything about it because I’ve been terrified to, but I figure … there’s no good time to say it, so I just said it.” McLachlan called the situation “pretty gross” but did not elaborate on reasons for the separation or the couple’s future plans … McLachlan wrote both songs with her longtime producer Pierre Marchand. She described “U Want Me 2″ as “about that really uncertain, confusing place at the end of a relationship when there’s no communication or closure, everything’s still up in the air and there’s a lot of anger and sadness. It’s sort of that working through ‘How do we move forward … with some dignity and grace.” “Don’t Give Up,” she said, is “pretty self-explanatory, basically just a plea to give it another chance and keep trying.”

I know this is prolly pretty random for those of you who aren’t all that familiar with Sarah McLachlan but I’m a big fan and this is really bummer news. If I recall correctly, Sarah‘s hubby Ashwin was also her percussionist on tour (they spent quite a bit of time together on the road during the Lilith Fair days) and they have one child two daughters (thanks Nicole). One of my fave Sarah Mac songs, Ice Cream, was inspired/written for Ash. I’m very disheartened to learn that her break-up from her husband is described as “pretty gross” :( I hope these new songs will help Sarah heal from the dissolution of her marriage … sad news.
