As you can see, Gabourey Sidibe wore a lovely blue dress … in fact, all of the women from Precious who appeared at the Academy Awards last night wore blue dresses because it was the color that actress Hattie McDaniel (the first African-American woman to win an Oscar) wore when she collected her Best Supporting Actress award for Gone with the Wind in 1939. Meryl Streep wore a lovely white dress … which was designed by Project Runway contestant Chris March (who is usually known for his outlandish costume designs — usually worn by drag queens — rather than his stylish fashion designs). The red carpet, as usual, had its hits and misses but the folks presented here looked mighty fine, I thought.

It was a night of nice firsts at the 82nd annual Academy Awards, even though there weren’t that many surprises. “The Hurt Locker” was the big winner for best picture. The low-budget Iraq war drama defeated nine other nominees in the expanded category, including the box-office blockbuster “Avatar.” And there was a history-making victory when Kathryn Bigelow of “The Hurt Locker” became the first woman ever to win for best director. “The Hurt Locker” won six Oscars in total. Best actress winner Sandra Bullock, who starred in the football drama “The Blind Side,” nabbed her first Oscar for a film that gave the romantic-comedy star a chance to tackle a serious role. It also was her first nomination. Veteran actor Jeff Bridges, who’s been nominated five times, also won his first Oscar with his best actor prize for “Crazy Heart.” The Hollywood favorite gave a gracious acceptance speech that credited his parents with getting him into show business (his father was the late Lloyd Bridges). “This is honoring them as much as it is me,” Bridges said. Overall, the broadcast was practical, but not particularly inspired. Cohosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin did their best to keep things amusing, but the stretches between their appearances were sometimes tedious. As usual, the fun part was seeing the winners have their moment at the podium. In the supporting acting categories, the statuettes went to two actors who were considered the front-runners — Mo’Nique, who switched from comedy to wrenching drama to play an abusive mother in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” and Christoph Waltz, who gave a vivid performance as a Nazi officer in “Inglourious Basterds.” Like Bullock, Bridges and Bigelow, it was the first win for both Mo’Nique and Waltz. Mark Boal of “The Hurt Locker” took home a statuette for his original screenplay about the tense mission of a bomb-defusing squad … The soaring “Up,” which also was nominated for best picture, won for best animated feature and original score. A tribute to the late director John Hughes, whose 1980s teen movies remain cultural landmarks, provided one of the most moving moments. Many of his familiar stars (including Molly Ringwald, Matthew Broderick and Jon Cryer) assembled onstage, providing a touching blast from the past for those who grew up watching “The Breakfast Club” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” In an opening monologue that resembled a celebrity roast, Martin and Baldwin lobbed a rapid-fire string of zingers aimed at the nominees and stars in the audience. Steering mostly clear of topical humor, the veteran funnymen poked fun at the stars in the audience and, with self-deprecating grace, themselves. The silver-haired Martin advised young heartthrobs Zac Efron and Taylor Lautner, “Take a good look at us, guys. This is you in five years.” Later, the camera cut to Martin and Baldwin sitting backstage on a couch wearing Snuggies. It was funny, but like much of the show, a little predictable. The most striking visual joke came when presenter Ben Stiller made an entrance as a blue Na’vi from “Avatar” and began speaking in the space alien language. “That means this seemed like a better idea in rehearsal,” he said. Stiller’s bit even earned a chuckle from “Avatar” director James Cameron, who’s not exactly known for his sense of humor. But the real surprise came before Martin and Baldwin took to the stage, when the new go-to guy for award show awesomeness, Neil Patrick Harris, opened the show with an elaborate musical number. Dressed in a sparkling tuxedo jacket and oozing dapper charm, Harris, a TV star who’s hosted the Emmys and Tonys, cracked, “I know, what am I doing here?” Just adding some zest, for a few minutes at least, to an evening that occasionally seemed short on energy.

I personally didn’t love the show … I found it more boring than it usually is and not very entertaining at all. Some of the jokes were funny (props to Ben Stiller in full Avatar make-up for making me laugh the most) but, overall, I felt they fell really flat. The interpretive dance portion was the stupidest shizz I’ve ever seen on an awards show. Not only were the dances uninspired (I’ve seen better moves in movies like Step Up and Honey, to be honest) but they had NOTHING at all to do with the movies they represented. It was just dumb … Oscar telecast director Adam Shankman did a poor job, I’m sorry. The show was about an hour way too long … which wasn’t helped by the way too long nominee packages that kept slowing things down thruout the night. When Ryan Reynolds was over-dramatically and somberly introducing The Blind Side as a nominee for Best Picture, I actually started to fall out of lust with him … IT WAS THAT BAD! Ugh. The only reason I’m not all that peeved about the show is because many of my faves won their awards. I’m just thrilled that The Hurt Locker did so well … it was much deserved. The people have chosen vampires. “The Twilight Saga,” “True Blood” and “The Vampire Diaries” all sucked up trophies Wednesday at the 36th annual People’s Choice Awards. “Twilight” won four trophies, including favorite movie, franchise and on-screen team for the dreamy trio of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, who also picked up the breakout male actor award. The undead HBO fable “True Blood” and the soapy supernatural CW series “The Vampire Diaries” were respectively selected as favorite TV obsession and favorite new TV drama. Other winners in categories spanning movies, TV and music included “Inglourious Basterds” as favorite independent movie and Lady Gaga as favorite pop and breakout music artist. Queen Latifah, who returned as host of the fan-favorite ceremony for the fourth consecutive year, kicked off the show at the Nokia Theatre with a jazzy name-dropping number. Stars such as Hugh Jackman, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Swift and Ellen DeGeneres were on hand to accept their awards selected by Internet votes. “One for each of Sandra Bullock’s toes,” joked 11-time People’s Choice Awards champion DeGeneres. Other TV winners included “American Idol” as favorite competition show, “Glee” as favorite new TV comedy, Steve Carell as favorite TV comedy actor, Alyson Hannigan as favorite TV comedy actress, “The Big Bang Theory” as favorite TV comedy, “House” as favorite TV drama, Hugh Laurie as favorite TV drama actor and “Supernatural” as favorite fantasy TV show. Winners in the movie categories included Bullock as favorite movie actress, Jackman as favorite action star, “The Proposal” as favorite comedy movie and “Up” for favorite family movie. Sacha Baron Cohen, appearing as himself and not as his alter-egos Borat or Bruno, presented Johnny Depp with a special award as favorite movie actor of the decade. “The only reason that any of us are up here is because of you,” Depp told the audience. Throughout the show, Latifah appeared in spoofs of “Twilight” and “Paranormal Activity,” which featured a cameo by Cloris Leachman clad in a sexy leather ensemble. The show also featured performances by Mary J. Blige, Cobra Starship and Nicole Scherzinger, as well as debut footage from “Clash of the Titans,” “Robin Hood” and “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains.”

It sounds like it was a fun show, unfortch I wasn’t home to watch. But you had to know that if the public was gonna be voting on the awards then the hot vampire trend going on in Hollywood these days was gonna be well-rewarded. Break out the Bordeaux, the whoopee cushions and the bangin’ Keith Richards guitar solos, because the 2009 Sexiest Man Alive party is officially under way. Bringing the fun with him wherever he goes – whether it’s onscreen in fizzy roles like Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise or at home with his family on their private Bahamian island – is just one reason why Johnny Depp, who also scored the honor in 2003, has joined an elite club of two-time SMA title holders (only Brad Pitt and George Clooney have matched the feat). At 46, the father of two still reigns as Hollywood’s most irresistible iconoclast; as one-of-a-kind as his beloved 15-year-old boots and as smoldering as his favorite Cuban cigars.

Considering how sexy Johnny really is, I’m surprised this is the photo that People decided to use for their cover … they deffo could’ve found a sexier photo, don’t you think? As you may recall, People selected Hugh Jackman as the Sexiest Man Alive last year … but there are 109 other sexy men who made the cut this year along with Johnny. Not that it’s a very difficult task but People really does a great job of picking out the sexiest of the sexy. I mean, Jerry O’Connell in the speedo is proof positive ;) I’m also glad to see some of my faves — David Beckham, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and the Glee guys — also made the cut. I kinda love that it looks like Ryan fell out of a catalog … he has that simple style that seems effortless and yet totally put together. The sweater, gloves, boots … he looks great! Ugh … not only is Ryan Reynolds a hottie to the max but he’s also a terribly stylish man who knows how to dress. Scarlett Johansson may be a nice girl and all but she SO does not deserve this. Boo!

… tho, judging by the looks of those bulging muscles showing thru his very tight shirt, it looks like he doesn’t really have a lot of work to do. Isn’t it soooooo annoying that Ryan Reynolds can look so good even when he’s trying to look all scrubby on his way into the gym? Ugh. I wonder how wifey Scarlett Johansson is able to handle this level of hotness on a daily basis. Yeah, I hate her ;)

I mean, it’s not that Scarlett looked bad … I think it’s just that I don’t really care for her helmet and plaid is not a good look for her. Mebbe it’s just that Ryan really knows how to look good on a bike and dear Scarlett pales in comparison. Or, you know, mebbe it’s the fact that Scarlett is married to one of the hottest guys in Hollywood and I kinda, sorta hate her guts for it? HMMM … well, whatever the case may be, I think it’s safe to assume that most folks would much prefer to see photos of Ryan Reynolds on his motorcycle all by himself … sans wife (and shirt). I mean … right?

Warner Bros. Pictures has hired X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Proposal star Ryan Reynolds to play the title role in the anticipated Green Lantern, scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release. Based on the DC Comics hero, the action-adventure will be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye) and produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti. Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. The Hollywood trades say that Reynolds and his camp entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests, along with actors Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test. The studio had holding options on the actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds’ option would have expired end of day Friday. Production is expected to begin in January. The “Green Lantern” was created in 1940 by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell. Introduced in 1959, Hal Jordan is a second-generation test pilot, an ordinary man who was given the power ring and battery (lantern) by a dying alien named Abin Sur. When Abin Sur’s spaceship crashed on Earth, the alien used his ring to seek out an individual to take his place as Green Lantern: someone who was “utterly honest and born without fear.” Reynolds recently starred in Fox’s “Wolverine,” in which he played Wade Wilson/Deadpool. The character is now being developed for a spin-off to which Reynolds is attached. He also played Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity.

As much as I LOVE Ryan Reynolds, I was really pullin’ for Bradley Cooper to get the part. I can totally see Hal Jordan in Cooper … and I was really lookin’ forward to seeing Coop in those tight superhero spandex. Ah well, I guess I’ll just have to settle for Ryan Reynolds squeezin’ his goodies in those superhero spanx. Wait … why was I all upset for again?? On second thought, WOOT!! What do y’all think … is this good news or bad news?

I’m not sure if these alt covers are actually being printed for sale or home delivery around the country but my issue of the mag arrived with the cover we saw on Wednesday (lower right corner, with the water wings) and the other 3 covers printed inside the mag. I have to say … each alt cover is suitable for ripping out of the mag and affixing to one’s wall — not that I did that myself, I swear.

Ryan Reynolds is simply too smart and self-aware to be so good-looking. The reticent hunk—who kicks off our Must List for 2009, thanks to his big-screen summer double shot of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Proposal–spent his EW cover shoot wielding a giant water gun instead of an ego, and try as he might, he simply cannot muster the arrogance to flaunt what he’s got. When asked if he’s comfortable as a sex symbol, Reynolds sighs. “If you take any of that seriously, you need to be euthanized, ASAP,” he says. “There are moments when you can use that to your advantage. But it’s really embarrassing. I think I fear more than anything just sounding like a complete a–hole when I have to answer that question.” So let’s skip to the work, where the 32-year-old Canadian is more at home. Of late, he’s certainly done enough of it. In a span of 15 months Reynolds shot four consecutive films: April’s teen comedy Adventureland; Wolverine, soon to spawn a spin-off for Reynolds’ sarcastic mercenary-turned-mutant, Deadpool; The Proposal, a romantic comedy (in theaters Friday) that lets him crack wise opposite old friend Sandra Bullock; and Paper Man, which debuted this month at the L.A. Film Festival, where Reynolds plays Jeff Daniels’ imaginary superhero friend. The more prominent of his two tights-centric roles fit the actor perfectly, and it’s hardly an accident: For the past six years, Reynolds had been trying to develop a Deadpool franchise on his own. “At its core, this is a movie about a guy in a red spandex suit who’s in the midst of a shame spiral. That cracks me up,” he says, promising the next film will hew closer to the original Marvel mythology than Wolverine allowed. Meanwhile, in The Proposal, Reynolds dials down the bang-bang and dials up the charm, playing the assistant to a hard-driving book editor with an expired visa (Bullock). The two trade a sham marriage for a promotion, and high jinks ensue. A much-discussed naked Bullock scene aside, the real draw of the movie is a chance to see its charismatic stars go head-to-head. “We had a kind of Abbott and Costello routine we’d been doing for years anyway,” says Reynolds of the natural partnership. “When I get someone like Sandy to work with–who’s so good at hitting the gas–it’s perfect for me.” But even if the cross-gender appeal of this summer’s labor vaults Reynolds into the marquee stratosphere many have long anticipated he’ll reach, the Man Who Was Van Wilder But Has Since Proven He’s Capable of So Much More will still probably pass on the arrogance thing. “I’ve always just liked working. I like being a working actor,” he says. “There’s an old saying that you don’t ever finish a movie, you abandon it, and I really believe that. I never walk away from a take and pat myself on the back. You always walk away going, ‘Dammit, I should have tried this!’ It’s that possibility that keeps me coming back for more.” Wait, artistic integrity and hot abs? Did we mention the guy’s a Must?

Le swooooon! See, Ryan looks pretty damn fantastic in these photos. While I’ll admit that he looked very “normal” (but hot normal) when my friends and I ran into him in person last Sunday, it’s in photos like these that I’m reminded how hawt he really is. EW is right, Ryan Reynolds deffo is a “must” … you simply must check out The Proposal when it opens this weekend. I really think you’re gonna love.
