Back in June of 2008 we learned plans were in the works for a reboot of the 80′s film RoboCop. At the time, the new RoboCop film was due to hit theaters in 2010 … but in June of 2010, it was reported that the RoboCop remake was dunzo. Today we learn that the new RoboCop film is back on track … and you’ll never guess who is reportedly up for the lead role of RoboCop!

Peter Weller, the actor who played RoboCop in the 1987 film RoboCop, caught wind of plans by fans to fund the creation of a RoboCop statue for display in the city of Detroit, MI. As a result, Weller — as RoboCop — has filmed a message for the people of Detroit about plans for the statue.

Last week we learned the amazing news that the Kickstarter project to fund the erection of a RoboCop statue in Detroit, MI successfully met their fund raising goal (with still time to raise more money) and today we get an update on the project. It turns out that the company that is licensed to create RoboCop replicas has offered to donate the materials for the Detroit RoboCop statue. It is really happening, y’all … very soon, Detroit will get its very own RoboCop statue!

Just six days after fans started raising funds to erect a statue of RoboCop to be put on display in Detroit, MI, over $50,000. has been collected for the project. What started off as a joke has turned into a bona fide campaign for fans to fund a RoboCop statue in the city of Detroit. After it was jokingly suggested that Detroit erect a RoboCop statue, the site Detroit Needs RoboCop went online and started collecting funds for the project. Today we learn that the money has been raised … but will the statue actually be erected?

Many of you may not recall the first round of Robocop movies which came out in the 1980′s but I do — I love that the movies were set in the Detroit, MI of the future. The movies may have been cheesy as hell (after all, weren’t all the great action movies of the 80s cheesy as hell?) but they were ridiculously fun. I’m hopeful that this new movie will be just as fun. I couldn’t find any real info on this new movie (whether it’s a remake or, yet another, sequel) but alls I know is that it better be set in Detroit, MI of the future. Period. [Source]
