There’s Something About ‘Married’

Yesterday afternoon I met up with my friend Tony for a late lunch at the Cheesecake Factory in Sherman Oaks, CA. I haven’t been able to hang out with Tony since my return from my latest travels so we decided to head out and grab some food. I got to meet Pink reader Erin at the Factory and Tony and I generally had a fun time. Later on in the day, I met up with Josh, Michael and his new boyfriend Zack at the ArcLight Theater in Hollywood to see the new Anne Hathaway movie Rachel Getting Married:

I had read really good things about the film so I was glad that Josh suggested that we see it. Right off the bat I feel I should convey that the movie isn’t really geared towards a mainstream audience. The shaky camera work was pretty on par with the shakiness in Cloverfield (honestly) and was meant to get in close to the actors to create a sense of realness (that you are part of the action). It took a long time for me to really get into the story but if you hang in there long enough, you really get taken in by the story. There were so many aspects of the movie that I felt were really odd but only because they weren’t polished scenes that one normally sees in films. Director Jonathan Demme is really going for bare realism, focusing on family dysfunction in a very stark, warts and all manner. I’m not sure how to explain it … but you know those embarrassing moments that you may experience at family functions? Rachel Getting Married tries to focus on those moments and use them to tell a larger tale. Anne Hathaway is really good in this film. I’ve heard there may be Oscar buzz for this film … I’m not sure I’d go quite that far but Anne does give a really remarkable performance. This movie isn’t for everyone … in fact, I saw a few people walk out of the theater midway … but it really is a great film if you stick with it and see it thru. My friends and I really enjoyed the film and are really glad we went out to see it.

This evening there is talk of getting together with some peeps … not sure exactly what the plan is but I’m sure it’ll be fun. It’s gotten colder here in SoCal … Fall has finally arrived.
