Prince Harry Plays Polo, Wins, Raises Money For His Charity

Horsin' around with the colonists
Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Prince Harry spent much of Day 2 of his first official visit to New York City yesterday horsing around with a few compatriots at the Veuve Cliquot Manhattan Polo Classic which took place on Governor’s Island in NY harbor. As you may recall, we learned yesterday that much of Day 1 was spent touring NYC on official biz. Yesterday’s charity polo match was played in an effort to raise funds for Harry’s charity Sentebele which benefits the children of Lesotho. Here are a few pics of Prince Harry doin’ his thang atop a horse named Serena as he lead his team to victory with a final score of 6-5:

Prince Harry ended his first trip to New York on Saturday with victory at a charity polo match and a dousing in champagne. The prince, 24, projected a newly serious image on his two-day visit to the Big Apple, kicking off his first official foreign trip by paying homage at Ground Zero, the site of the 9/11 attacks. But he was back to his glamour-loving ways Saturday at the star-studded game on Governor’s Island in the Hudson River, with Manhattan’s skyscrapers the dramatic backdrop. Riding a chestnut-colored pony called Serena he helped his team win 6-5 before an adoring crowd. Well-heeled guests and celebrities in sunglasses, suits, tiny dresses and large hats sipped Veuve Clicquot champagne, which sponsored the event, as they watched from white pavilions. On the other side of the pitch, hundreds of members of an enthusiastic public lay on the grass, roasting in the sun. All afternoon, the “mwah mwah” of air kisses mingled with the shutter snaps of paparazzi cameras and thud of galloping polo ponies. Argentine model and professional polo player Nacho Figueras, who captained the losing team, told AFP that Prince Harry was a “good player.” He dismissed suggestions before the game — staged to raise money for Prince Harry’s Lesotho children’s charity Sentebale — that he might go easy on his royal rival. “When we’re on the polo field we are all equal. That’s the way he’d like it,” said Figueras, whose appearance caused exclamations of admiration from several female journalists, including one gushing: “You’re so tall!” After the match, the famously hard-partying Prince Harry was soaked in champagne. Figueras sprayed the third in line to the British throne, who then drank from a champagne-filled trophy — and sprayed a mouthful of bubbly back. The red-headed prince is notorious for his late nights out and occasional PR gaffes, but is seen as one of the world’s most eligible bachelors. While New York is brimming with celebrities, the son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana has clearly made a mark. Invitees to the polo match included Madonna, Chloe Sevigny and fashion designer Marc Jacobs.

Rapper LL Cool J said he was thrilled. “It’s very cool he came over from London for it,” he said. The rapper, sporting diamond ear rings and shadowed by an enormous bodyguard in a black suit, said there was “a certain mystery” about royals. The closest he’d got to royalty, LL Cool J joked, was Queens — a decidedly down-to-earth area of New York City. This was Prince Harry’s first time to New York and first trip abroad as official representative of Buckingham Palace. He began on Friday with wreath-laying at Ground Zero, site of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack against the World Trade Center. He then named the British Garden in Manhattan in honor of the 67 Britons killed on 9/11 and met with veterans at a military hospital.

Congrats to Prince Harry and his team on their win … but really, it is the children who benefit from his charity Sentebele that are the real winners. I understand folks paid quite a pretty penny to attend yesterday’s event, with proceeds going to Harry’s charity. It looks like Madonna was interesting in pretty much everything else (including reading the new issue of Interview magazine which features Björk on the cover) BUT watching polo. Still, it was nice of her to grace the prince with her hallowed presence. And thus ends the first official visit to the US by his royal hawtness. We were very glad to have him and hopefully he’ll come back real soon.

Prince Harry Makes First Official Visit To The US

Visits the colony great State of New York
Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Prince Harry, the youngest son of the late Princess Diana and heir to the throne Prince Charles of Wales, arrived in NYC yesterday on his first official visit to the United States of America. Prince Harry spent part of the first day of his visit paying his respects at Ground Zero (the site of the former World Trade Center twin towers that were attacked on September 11, 2001) before moving on to various other locales for other activities. Here are a few pics of his Royal hotness at different stops along the way on his first visit to NYC yesterday:

Prince Harry, the younger son of Britain’s Prince Charles and Princess Diana, offered his condolences to September 11 victims Friday in his first official trip overseas. Harry’s two-day visit to New York, surrounded by public officials and community activists, could reflect a change in a public image that has been marred by several incidents, including a one-day stint in drug rehab in 2002 and accusations of racism in January. At the outset of his visit, Harry stopped at ground zero with New York Gov. David Paterson and briefly talked with family members of September 11 victims. The prince then laid a wreath at the World Trade Center site and bowed his head in a moment of silence. He left a handwritten note tacked to the wreath, citing an “admiration of the courage shown by the people” of New York on September 11, 2001. Harry later paid tribute to his fellow citizens at Lower Manhattan’s British Garden at Hanover Square, where he honored the 67 British victims of the September 11 attacks, officials said. Harry’s trip will also take him uptown to the Harlem Children’s Zone, where he and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho hope to learn how the nonprofit has succeeded in supporting children in the low-income area, officials said. Following the example of his mother, Harry will use this trip to promote his own charity for children, Sentebale. Co-founded with Lesotho’s prince, the charity supports children in the sub-Saharan country who lost parents to AIDS. Also on Harry’s agenda is a meeting with veterans of the Iraq and Afghan wars, officials said. Harry, 24, served for two months in Afghanistan as a Coalition Forces soldier in 2007. The third in line for the British crown, Harry is active in the British Army. He received a promotion to lieutenant in April 2008 and is training for an Army Air Corps pilot position, according to the prince’s Web site.

While Harry was all biz in NYC yesterday, he will get some playtime today on Day 2 of his official visit to NYC. At the start of today, Harry will spend time at Harlem Children’s Zone (which is an organization that offers families social and educational aid) and he will be accompanied by Sentebale’s co-founder, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. Then, later on today, the young prince will play in a charity polo match, The Veuve Cliquot Manhattan Polo Classic, on Governor’s Island in NY harbor in order to raise money for the US branch of his Sentebale charity. I understand that a great many New Yorkers are very excited to attend this polo event to watch Prince Harry play. It’s strange to think that this is Harry’s first official visit to NYC … but I guess if you think about it, as a Prince of England, he really must occupy all of his time with British affairs. I hope Prince Harry enjoys his time on this side of the pond. I know that we are very happy to host him :)

Princes William & Harry Play A Game Of Polo

Plus, Wills gets coupley with Kate Middleton
Monday, May 11th, 2009

Their Royal Hawtnesses, Princes William and Harry, participated in a polo match in the UK that raised funds for various charities and they both looked quite fetching in their sporting attire. At the match, Wills and his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton showed a lot of public affection for one another, which is very surprising considering that the couple have tried to keep their distance and a relative low profile together in the past few months. Here are a few photos from yesterday’s polo match and some deets on what went down:

Prince William and girlfriend Kate Middleton may have managed to keep the lowest of low profiles throughout the winter, but on Sunday they were out for all to see – and to be caught in a rare moment of public affection as they walked from a post-polo match party near Windsor, England. “William spent about 40 minutes at the party after his match, and then picked up Kate and they wandered back to the car,” says an onlooker. “He put his left arm around her back and there was plenty of smiling between them.” During the match, Kate sat with her sister Pippa and one of William’s best friends, Tom van Staubenzee – whose family charity was one of the beneficiaries of the afternoon. Middleton, 27, didn’t show much reaction during the match – which William and Prince Harry’s team, Umbogo, won by four goals to three. “She was just enjoying the sunshine and the game,” says the bystander. Sunday’s event, sponsored by Audi, raised money for three of the princes’ pet causes: Harry’s Sentebale charity for the African nation of Lesotho; the Child Bereavement Charity, of which William, 26, is a patron; and the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, of which both princes are patrons.

Hahaha … imagine that! The team with the two princes on it won the match. I love it! Actually, I love anytime that either prince participates in a polo match like this … something about the bright white pants and those leather boots … it’s a good look, I think :) I’m also happy that Kate and Wills are back to PDAing it. I love them together and I hope we get to see more of them together in the future. Long live Wills and Kate!

Prince Harry Shows That Real Men Wear Pink

... but on their fingernails?
Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Prince Harry is in the pink these days … but only on his left hand. The young Royal was spotted out on the town this weekend showing off a set of fingernails painted a bright color of pink which, undoubtedly, is meant to spark a new trend amongst the crazy kids in his kingdom … no? Take a look:

Over the years the Royals have entertained us with a variety of style faux pas – but never before has one been seen in such shockingly pink nail varnish. Not one of the men, at least… Prince Harry turned up at Raffles nightclub in London on Friday with the garish varnish on the nails of just one hand, his left. Although the bizarre fashion trend has been sported by celebrities including Al Pacino, David Beckham and comedian David Walliams, guests at the club said Harry’s painted nails were the source of much hilarity and gossip. Whether he had done it to mark Comic Relief day – or even to go with the red striped boxer shorts that poked above his jeans – remained open to speculation. “No one knows why he’d painted his nails and the fact that he’d painted only one hand was even stranger,” one guest told The Mail on Sunday. “It looked most bizarre and Harry seemed a bit embarrassed by it. He kept slipping his hand in his jeans pocket.” Although he was trying to keep a low profile, the Prince’s unusual fashion statement caused him to stand out like a sore thumb. He arrived at the nightclub on Kings Road alone just after midnight and headed straight for the club’s VIP area upstairs. According to sources at the club, the young Royal was escorted into the venue by a Royal protection officer and stopped briefly to chat with Arabella Musgrave, Prince William’s ex-girlfriend. “Harry arrived quite late at about 12.30 and didn’t even acknowledge the bouncer when he lifted up the access rope,” says a fellow guest. “He clearly wanted as little fuss made as possible about him coming to the club so no one knows why he was wearing pink nail varnish. He spotted Arabella across the dancefloor and they chatted for a while, then Harry was shown upstairs. There weren’t many people up there, but he didn’t want to be in the main area. He had some drinks with a few friends and left at about 3.30 in the morning.” Harry, who was drinking Vodka Red Bull and Vodka Apples during the night, will no doubt be removing the nail varnish before he returns to his Army training ground at Middle Wallop, Hampshire, tomorrow morning.

Aww … gotta love Harry for reppin’ the pinkness like a champ. You will note that his lurve for all things pink isn’t merely relegated to his fingernail polish … he’s also rockin’ a pair of pink boxer shorts. Pink is the new Bloke, y’all!

Prince Harry Begins His Military Pilot Training

He feels the need, the need for speed
Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Prince Harry was spotted last week in his military training garb at RAF Barkston Heath in Lincolnshire beginning his initial training sessions to become a pilot in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces … here are a few photos of Harry getting himself familiarized with the controls of a Slingsby Firefly plane:

I must admit, Harry looks a might better as Top Gun-like airman than Prince William does as an In the Navy seaman. I’m not sure if the British Armed Forces have the same sort of training practices that we have here in the US (at least in movies) but I’m hoping that Harry will, one day soon, get himself a kickass pilot nickname … like Condor or Velociraptor or something like that. I doubt he’ll get saddled with a nickname like Maverick, Goose or Ice Man but at least we can hope for something cool. After all, look what having a fun Top Gun nickname did for Tom Cruise.

Prince Harry & Chelsy Davy Are Dunzo!

They're over, again
Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Sad news of heartbreak coming out of the British Royal Family this weekend … the famed romance between Prince Harry (third in line for the crown) and his long-time girlfriend Chelsy Davy is kaput. The couple broke off their fairly extensive relationship while on holiday together and have confirmed the split to the world … and get this … it she who broke up with him! As a result, they’re dunzo, y’all!

Britain’s Prince Harry and his Zimbabwe-born girlfriend Chelsy Davy, 23, are calling it quits after five years, a palace source confirms to PEOPLE. The 24-year-old prince parted amicably with Davy, a post-graduate law student at Leeds University, three weeks after the couple spent a romantic holiday together in the Indian Ocean nation of Mauritius. “They are remaining friends,” says the royal source. “There have been all sorts of reasons given [for the split] but suffice it to say they felt that it had run its course.” According to the British newspaper News of the World, Davy, the daughter of a millionaire safari operator, made the decision to break up after tiring of the prince’s playboy antics. The pair met through mutual friends in 2004 and conducted a long-distance relationship for three years while Davy studied at a university in Cape Town, South Africa, and Harry was enrolled at Britain’s Sandhurst military academy. Last week, Harry – who recently came under fire for uttering racist comments caught on videotape – began a new phase of his military career, a 2½-year course with the Army Air Corps in helicopter pilot training.

Aww … sadness. I cannot imagine that it is very easy to be married to a Prince but, then again, I think I’d do everything that I could do to make it work because, after all, he’s an effing Prince! If memory serves, Harry and Chelsy broke up before (mebbe they were on a break?) and they managed to put their relationship back together. Now that Harry is taking on more military responsibilities, it sounds like Chelsy took all could stands and just can stands no more. Something tells me that these two will find their way back to one another. Mebbe when Chelsy finds out that its really difficult to find other hawt Princes to date? Mebbe when Harry finds out that it’s really difficult to find hawt chicks he can trust? In any event, the couple are splitsville now … which is sad. I quite liked them together … but, again, I won’t be surprised if they reconnect one day soon.

Prince Harry Is Sorry For Making Racial Slurs On Video

Got caught calling a fellow soldier a 'Paki', another a 'raghead' on home video
Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Prince Harry is doing a lot of apologizing today after a video of the young prince on duty in Afghanistan surfaced yesterday that showed the prince saying some very racially insensitive things. News of the World managed to score a home video, apparently recorded by Prince Harry on his own video camera, of the prince narrating a short clip and is heard referring to a fellow soldier named Ahmed as his “little Paki friend” — which I now understand that in the UK is as offensive as using the “N” word here in the US. Later on in the tape he also uses the term “raghead” when he sees a Caucasian soldier friend wearing a head covering on his head. The video goes on to show other shenanigans on the prince’s part but it’s the Paki and raghead remarks that have him scrambling to undue some of the damage done by the remarks:

ROYAL rebel Prince Harry today stands accused of racism in a bombshell home video as he swaggers in front of his army comrades. The soldier prince pours shame on the Royal Family as he calls an Asian squaddie “our little Paki friend” and tells another officer cadet jokingly wearing a camouflage veil off duty: “Fuck me, you look like a raghead”—an offensive term for an Arab. Harry, 24, third in line to the throne, also mocks the Queen—who is Commander-in-Chief of the British Army—while acting out a mobile phone call to her in front of other cadets at a field camp in Cyprus. They laugh out loud as the disrespectful Prince pretends to get bored talking to his grandmother and dismissively hangs up on her saying: “Send my love to the corgis. I’ve got to go, got to go, bye. God Save You . . . yeah, that’s great.” He even jokes about the colour of his pubic hair with one soldier in the middle of giving orders. Last night Clarence House issued an APOLOGY for his behaviour in the shocking video diary—in which Harry is often behind the camera giving a foul-mouthed commentary. Extracts from the shock video can be seen on only our website notw.co.uk And the Ministry of Defence said last night: “This sort of language is not acceptable in a modern army.” His sick remarks will not only have infuriated the Queen but could also increase tensions with Islamic groups in the UK who were outraged that he went to fight and kill Muslims in Afghanistan. And they will mortify Army chiefs trying to recruit soldiers from Britian’s ethnic minorities. The film was made in 2006, just a year after Harry was shamed for wearing a Nazi swastika at a fancy dress party and forced to make a grovelling apology.

I am not even going to begin to try rationalize Harry’s remarks, they’re pretty deplorably insensitive. I can only imagine that while on military duty, soldiers tend to cut up with one another in order to defray the cautious stress that comes from being in danger. I suspect, too, that Harry was prolly trying to joke around and “be cool” with his friends (something dumb guys do all the time) … again, not an excuse. I did find the part of the video funny when he pretends to talk to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on the phone saying, “God save you”. That bit was funny, I thought. It was also nice of Harry to confirm to the world that his pubes are also ginger, just like the hair on his head. Nice chap. After the jump, watch the video in full for yourselves so you can see and hear just what has gotten Harry in so much hot water today …
