He visits First Responders Before Laying a Wreath at the WTC Memorial
President Obama Visits NYC To Honor The World Trade Center Memorial

On Sunday night, President Barack Obama announced to the world that US military forces killed Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks on NYC and Washington DC (among other Al Qaeda terrorist attacks around the world) and today he made his way to the World Trade Center Memorial site in Lower Manhattan to lay a wreath at the foot of the Survivor’s Tree in honor of the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001. Before he made his visit to the WTC Memorial site, Obama paid a visit to an NYC firehouse to visit with first responders stationed there. In the wake of the news of bin Laden’s death, today is a day for somber remembrance and honor of the victims and heroes of 9/11.

Protesters shouted, "CHOP OFF THEIR HEADS!"
Prince Charles Attacked By British Student Protesters

Things got very scary for Prince Charles and Camilla the Duchess of Wales in London, England last night when their chauffeured car (complete with police escort) was attacked by student protesters. Chanting things like, CHOP OFF THEIR HEADS!, the protesters hurled rocks and paint at the royal limousine … very obviously scaring Prince Charles and Camilla:

Things turned ugly Thursday as the Rolls-Royce carrying England’s future king Prince Charles and his wife Camilla drove into a group of protestors. CBS News … reports that some of the student demonstrators shouted “off with their heads,” smashed a window, and splattered the royals’ car with paint. The prince’s police escort quickly came to the rescue and the couple – unharmed, but clearly shocked – arrived safely at a gala variety show in central London. Charles and Camilla put a brave face on as they emerged from the car, quickly picking up their ceremonial duties and shaking hands with a few well wishers before heading into the theater. “They were whisked right through to hospitality where Camilla had a rather stiff brandy to calm her nerves,” reveals CBS News contributor Neil Sean, who reports frequently on the royal family and attended the Royal Variety Show. Police say the prince’s car, and his security detail, were caught off guard by a fast-moving group of protesters who converged on the area of the theater at short notice. Regardless of where they came from and how long they had been there, the violent group’s ability to come within inches of the man next in line to sit on the throne will doubtless prompt a review of security plans for the wedding of Charles’ son, Prince William, being planned for this summer … Earlier Thursday, thousands of students demonstrated in central London against a government move to enable the country’s universities to triple tuition fees – to 14,000 dollars per year. Sporadic pushing and shoving with the police gradually escalated, with officers on horseback brought in to break up the crowds. As night fell, it turned violent. Some demonstrators lit fires, others attacked government buildings. But it’s the attack on the royal car that’s grabbing the headlines this morning.

Wow! These student protests have been going on in London for some time now … but only recently have they started to turn violent. This successful attack on members of the Royal Family are very shocking to me. It is unfathomable that they British police force let the next King of England get that close to such violence. While I do not believe the lives of Charles and Camilla were in any actual danger, the violent nature of the attack on their car is pretty stunning. After the jump, check out some photos of Charles and Camilla‘s damaged Rolls Royce and find out how they spent the remainder of their evening after this attack …

Season's Greetings
Happy Xmas From Prince Charles & Camilla

Before the British Royal Family gets around to celebrating the marriage of Prince William to his fiancee Kate Middleton next Spring, they’ve got a little matter of Xmas to celebrate beforehand. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall have released their official Xmas Card for 2010 as a way to say Happy Holidays to all their loyal subjects:

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, took to the slopes to take photos for this year’s royal Christmas card, which depicts the beaming couple atop a snowy mountainside in a winter wonderland. An annual tradition, the Prince of Wales, 62, has often included Princes William and Harry in previous years’ photos. But for this Christmas, it’s all about the future king and his Mrs., who are beaming and bundled up from head to toe.

My guess is that now that Prince William is about to become a married man and Prince Harry is a rugged military man, Charles and Camilla decided that their Xmas card need only depict the two of them together in a loving embrace. I can’t help but be fascinated by the Royal Family, even more so now with the upcoming wedding of Prince William to Kate. While I’ve never been too much of a Prince Charles fan, I can’t help but be charmed by him these days … after all, he will be the next King of England. I suppose the next time Charles and Camilla pose for an official photo, it’ll be for his son’s Royal Wedding in April. But, for now, it’s Xmas greetings all around.

Wills gives Kate his late mother's engagement ring
Enfianced Prince William & Kate Middleton Meet The Press

Earlier today we learned the exceedingly happy news that Prince William of Wales and his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton have gotten themselves engaged to be married next year. Just a few hours ago, the prince and his princess-to-be met with and posed for the world press so that they could show off Kate‘s beautiful engagement ring. It turns out that William gave Kate his late mother Princess Diana‘s engagement ring, the very one that Prince Charles gave to her when they got engaged in the early 80′s:

Hours after news of their royal engagement broke, Prince William and bride-to-be Kate Middleton appeared for the first time as an engaged couple during a photo call at St. James’s Palace – and her ring was on view … Prince William has honored his late mother by giving his new fiancée Kate Middleton the engagement ring that Prince Charles once gave to Princess Diana. “It’s very special to me. As Kate’s very special to me now, it was right to put the two together,” William said as the newly-engaged couple faced the cameras for the first time today. The ring is an oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds. William proposed to Kate on a safari in Kenya in October, but he first asked her father for permission to propose. Michael Middleton said that he and his wife are “absolutely delighted” and “thrilled” by the engagement announcement. The wedding, which will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, is already being heralded as the biggest wedding since Charles and Diana’s.

I mean … I can’t even take it. Could this engagement be any more perfect? What an amazing gift for William to give Kate … I cannot even wrap my head around the fact that Kate is now wearing the very ring that Diana wore when she got engaged to Prince Charles:

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton will be such a huge event … in this day and age of immediate news, I can’t even imagine how big of a celebration it will be. Even tho we knew this day would some day come, the fact that the couple are now officially engaged to be married just makes the whole thing seem really real. This is all so exciting … I can’t wait to follow the preparations leading up to the big day which will FINALLY HAPPEN next year :D

Prince Harry Becomes A Military Pilot

Back in January, we learned that Prince William became a full-fledged military pilot when he graduated from the Defence Helicopter Flying School at Royal Air Force Shawbury. Today we learn that his little brother, Prince Harry, has followed in his footsteps and has also become a British military helicopter pilot. Here are a few photos of Harry getting his provisional pilot’s wings (he won’t get the real thing until he graduates from the military academy) from his father Prince Charles at a special ceremony earlier today:

British Army commanders have selected Prince Harry to train as an Apache attack helicopter pilot, his office said Friday, boosting the 25-year-old’s hopes of returning to the front lines in Afghanistan. Prince Harry, who received his pilot’s wings from his father, Prince Charles, at a ceremony on Friday, said it was a “huge honor” to learn to fly “an awesome helicopter.” “There is still a huge mountain for me to climb if I am to pass the Apache training course,” he said in a statement issued by his London office. To be honest, I think it will be one of the biggest challenges in my life so far,” the statement said. “I am very determined, though, as I do not want to let down people who have shown faith in my ability to fly this aircraft on operations.” The prince, who is third in line to the British throne and is known in the military as Lt. Harry Wales, passed his basic helicopter training course last month. He was one of nine training pilots awarded their provisional wings by Prince Charles, who is Colonel in Chief of the Army Air Corps. “You are looking very smart, if I may say so,” Charles told his son as he inspected the graduates. Chelsy Davy, who has long been romantically linked with Harry, was in attendance, cheering loudly when his name was called out as the winner of the Peter Adams Trophy, a prize for the best tactical ability during the operational training phase. Harry’s success at basic training granted him the right to choose to apply to train on either the Apache, or the Lynx, a battlefield utility helicopter. His office said that Army Air Corps commanders judged that the prince’s skills and flying abilities best suited the Apache, which was designed to hunt and destroy tanks. The helicopter has been extensively used in Afghanistan to assault enemy ground positions and fly cover for Chinook heavy-lift support helicopters. Harry has made no secret of his desire to return to the front lines in Afghanistan.

Ah, yes … Miss Chelsy Davy was there to cheer on her hot royal boyfriend. Prince Wills is happily with Kate Middleton and Harry is still with Chelsy and all is right with the world. I suppose congratulations are in order for the young prince. I suspect it’s no small feat to achieve an honor like this. While some may scoff that he may have only gotten his wings because of his royal stature, it seems very telling to me that Harry wants to get back and fight in the thick of armed combat in Afghanistan. I would think his royal stature would do more to preclude him from going back into combat rather than push him to the front of the line. In any event, I think the folks in the UK can be very proud that they have such able-bodied men in the Princes of Wales that want to serve their country in this way.

Prince William Becomes A Military Pilot

Further congratulations are in order today for Prince William who received his military wings in a ceremony in the UK this week at his graduation ceremony from Defence Helicopter Flying School at Royal Air Force Shawbury. Here is a cute pic of Prince Wills gettin’ his certificate from his father Prince Charles who acted as Air Chief Marshal at the ceremony:

With his girlfriend enthusiastically supporting him, Prince William took a major step on Friday toward his goal of being a search and rescue helicopter pilot. William, 27, graduated from the Defence Helicopter Flying School at Royal Air Force Shawbury, where he received his wings presented to him by his father Prince Charles, acting in his capacity as Air Chief Marshal. Sitting among family and friends of the new pilots was William’s longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton, 28. During the ceremony she rose to her feet to applaud as William took his place among the honorees. It was the last time the couple will be together before the prince heads off for a five-day tour of New Zealand and Australia, his first official overseas tour on behalf of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. Middleton has been at her beau’s other significant occasions during his military career – when he graduated from both flying school and from army college at Sandhurst. Friday’s honor followed a 12-month training course at Shawbury during which William, for a time, shared a house with his brother, Prince Harry, who was there to learn to fly for the Army Air Corps. William, known as Flight Lieutenant Wales, completed the flying aspects of the course in December, including 80 hours of training on the Griffin HT1 helicopter. His training also included courses in advanced handling, night flying, emergency handling and tactical and formation flying. The royal will begin the search and rescue conversion course at RAF Valley in Wales in late January. If successful, he’ll become a fully operational search and rescue pilot with one of the six UK-based Royal Air Force search and rescue forces later this year. He would then serve around three years as a pilot.

Ahhh, Prince Wills continues to grow into a fine young man … this latest accomplishment is quite an achievement. I’ve been so impressed with Wills for so long, he would make a fine King one day. It’s crazy to think that the little boys who we watched grow up before our eyes are now men grooming for the monarchy. They make it all seem so effortless and yet, I’m sure both Wills and Prince Harry work very hard in their endeavors. Much congrats on this achievement, Wills! You’ll be a Top Gun in no time.

Looks toward an uncertain future
Queen Elizabeth Looks Back On 2008 On This ‘Somber’ Xmas

The Royal Family — including Queen Elizabeth II, Princes Charles, William, Harry and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall — were on hand to attend Xmas day services at Sandringham Church in the UK yesterday after Her Majesty delivered her annual Xmas Day address to the United Kingdom earlier in the day. Calling this Xmas a “somber” one, Queen Elizabeth talked at length about the year that was and the challenges to come in 2009. Here are a few pics of the Royals as they arrived for church services yesterday and a portion of her Xmas Day address delivered via radio, TV and Interweb:

Worries about the global economy and violence across the world have turned the celebration of Christmas into a more somber affair this year, Queen Elizabeth said on Thursday. Britain, like many other developed nations, is facing the risk of a prolonged recession. Unemployment is rising fast, household high street firms are collapsing and several big banks are only able to stay in business with government help. There has also been an increase in the number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan in recent weeks, just as troops in Iraq prepare to come home next year. “Christmas is a time for celebration, but this year it is a more somber occasion for many,” the Queen said. “People are touched by events which have their roots far across the world. Whether it is the global economy or violence in a distant land, the effects can be keenly felt at home.” But, in her annual Christmas broadcast which dates back to 1957 and is watched by millions across Britain and the Commonwealth, the 82-year-old said those with courage would work hard to survive and improve their lot. “When life seems hard the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future,” she said, standing by a piano adorned with pictures of her family. This year has been eventful for the royal family, with Prince Harry — third in line to the throne — fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan for 10 weeks, an inquest into the death of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ 60th birthday. The Queen paid tribute to Britain’s armed forces but also singled out for praise her eldest son and heir, Charles, accompanied by previously unseen footage of the prince playing with his mother as a small child. “We feel great pride in seeing our family make their own unique contributions to society,” she said. “Through his charities, the Prince of Wales has worked to support young people and other causes for the benefit of the wider community.”

While it may not want to be the message that folks want to hear on an occasion like Xmas, I think it was prudent for the Queen to address the issues of the day in the manner in which she did. The prospects are gloomy for everyone in the world, none of us are untouched by the degrading state of the economy, and violence still threatens us at almost every turn. Queen Elizabeth has a way of delivering this sort of serious message with a resoluteness that instills confidence in people. After the jump, watch her Xmas Address in full for yourselves …
