Earlier today we learned all about Adam Lambert‘s shocking performance at the 2009 American Music Awards last night, as well as Jennifer Lopez‘s embarrassing fall at the AMAs … but there were other things going on at the Nokia Theater where the AMAs took place that are kinda worth mentioning. Celebs strutted their stuff on the red carpet on the way into the show, other folks performed songs without incident and a few awards were even handed out … who knew? Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals:

Yes, peeps were lookin’ purdy and stuff on the red carpet but let’s get to the awards. Taylor Swift, who has been cleaning up at awards shows all year long already, was the biggest winner of the night … she took home 5 awards including Artist of the Year! Michael Jackson also enjoyed a big night last night taking home a few posthumous awards of his own as did Whitney Houston, who became the 7th person ever to win the International Artist of the Year award from the AMAs:

Country crossover star Taylor Swift overshadowed the late Michael Jackson at the American Music Awards on Sunday, winning five prizes including artist of the year. Jackson, who had been expected to enjoy a clean sweep, ended up with four awards. He and Swift went head-to-head in the artist of the year race, the ceremony’s final prize. Other multiple winners included hip-hop acts Jay-Z and the Black Eyed Peas, with two each. Swift, 19, was also named favorite female artist in the pop/rock and country categories, and favorite adult-contemporary artist. Her 2008 album “Fearless,” the best-selling release in the United States this year, was named favorite country album. She accepted her awards live via satellite from backstage at London’s Wembley Arena, where she will perform a concert on Monday. “Music has never been ultimately about competition,” Swift said, after winning the artist of the year prize. She said it was an “unimaginable honor” to be cited in the same category as Jackson, and thanked the Jackson family. Jackson was named favorite male artist in the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories, while his 2003 hits collection “Number Ones” was named favorite album in both those categories. The album is the No. 2 seller this year in the United States. His brother Jermaine, accompanied by sons Jeremy, Jaafar and Jermajesty, accepted on his behalf. At one point, he thanked Allah “for blessing my entire family.” Rapper Eminem, making a rare awards-show appearance in the wake of his four nominations, went home empty-handed. Glam-pop singer Lady Gaga, rock band Kings of Leon and jailed rapper T.I., who earned three nominations each, were also snubbed. The Black Eyed Peas were named favorite group in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. Jay-Z won favorite male artist and favorite album in the rap/hip-hop categories. His wife Beyonce, who was performing a show in Dublin, was named favorite female artist in the soul/R&B category. Punk rock trio Green Day won the favorite alternative artist. Rascal Flatts won favorite country group for the fourth year in a row.

Crazy, right? Well, since the AMAs are handed out according to fan voting I guess it’s all Y’ALL’s fault that Taylor won so many awards. The girl must really be enjoying life right now … whether it’s deserved or not (many, many folks argue that it is not) she is really taking home some major awards this year. So … ok … as far as I can ascertain, Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy) and Gabe Saporta (Cobra Starship) got themselves into a little bet … and while I’m not entirely sure what the bet was about, I do know that Pete lost and Gabe won. And so, because Gabe was the winner and Pete was the loser, the bet had to be paid … Pete Wentz got a tattoo of Gabe Saporta‘s face on his leg … and shared the whole experience on Twitter:

I gotta say, the tattoo doesn’t look all that much like Gabe A-HA! THIS is the photo of Gabe the tattoo is based on and yes, it does look like him … I guess it’s cool that Pete is a man of his word and got the tattoo after losing the bet. Tho, I should add, it’s not really that cool at all to bet about getting tattoos.

Hello Kitty, the cute little animated white cat who stands three apples tall and wears a big red bow, is celebrating her 35th anniversary this year and is being honored here in SoCal with an art exhibit titled Three Apples which features artwork and special edition products emblazoned with Hello Kitty‘s likeness on them. The exhibit hosted a red carpet event on Thursday night and here are a few photos of some of the celebs who came out to celebrate Hello Kitty along with the press release announcement for the event:

It’s clear that Hello Kitty appeals, on some level, to a lot of different people … including rockers like Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy. I gotta admit, even I have a soft spot in my heart for the cute little kitty. It’s crazy to think that Hello Kitty is 35 years old … cuz she still looks as young as ever. It’s gotta be botox. Birthday Lurve goes out to Ashlee Simpson-Wentz who celebrated her 25th birthday at Wet Republic at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV yesterday. Joined by her hubby Pete Wentz, her older sister Jessica Simpson (not pictured) and a gaggle of her besties, Ashlee partied the day/night away poolside in the LV sun. Here are a few photos:

If you read the tabloids, you probably think Jessica Simpson is overweight and unable to stop crying and her sister, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, is on the brink of divorce. Both sisters were at Wet Republic on Saturday and demonstrated that you really can’t believe everything you read in the tabloids: Jessica Simpson looked great and her little sister seemed to be very much in love. While supermarket rags claim the seniormost Simpson sister is distraught, insecure and overweight after losing both her boyfriend and her dog, the 29-year-old looked great and was all smiles at the MGM Grand yesterday. Still, supermarket tabloids suggest otherwise. Jessica Simpson was on the cover of Us Weekly last week. “Jessica falls to pieces,” the cover story announced, along with other details of her alleged “meltdown.” “Crying all the time, unable to lose weight and feeling alone, she tells friends she wants Tony back,” it claimed. A week earlier, In Touch ran what they claimed to me an “exclusive” cover story on Sept. 21 that called the singer “desperate.” “Jessica humiliates herself by reuniting with the man who betrayed her,” it charged. “Is she doing it because Nick is back with Vanessa and Tony’s flaunting a new blond girlfriend?” Furthering the attack, People.com ran a story on Sept. 21 declaring, “Friends Worry About Jessica Simpson’s ‘Tailspin’.” “After losing her beloved Maltipoo Daisy to a coyote attack, Jessica Simpson may be at the lowest point of her life,” the story began. After what proved to be a whirlwind year, the petite brunette said she had a lot to celebrate. “I had such a great year … it was definitely the best year of my life, “ she said. “I had, you know, a child and got married.” She and Wentz tied the knot last May and welcomed their son in November. The young family traveled together and came to Las Vegas for the poolside birthday bash. “I came in today from tour, I’ve been on the road with my husband,” Simpson-Wentz said. The 25-year-old was only here for the day, but did her best “to relax and enjoy (her) friends and family” during the brief trip.

I have to say, I’m happy that Ashlee had herself a nice birthday and I’m also happy to see that reports of Jessica‘s meltdown seem to have been greatly exaggerated. To be honest, it’s impossible for Jess to have suffered so much loss and not fall apart just a little bit … so it’s good to hear that she is getting out and moving on. I LOVE Ashlee on Melrose Place … she plays kooky/crazy Violet very well and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for that character. It sounds like Ashlee had herself a very nice birthday and that Jessica will live to see another day. Clearly it was a great weekend for the Simpson sisters!!

Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz was on hand at Dodger Stadium last night to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the game. Pete posed with Dodgers catcher Brad Ausmus and Los Angeles Clippers’ rookie forward Blake Griffin (the first overall selection in this year’s NBA Draft) and managed to get the ball over home plate … here are a few pics:

Pete chilled out in the Dugout Club seats for the game with some of his peeps, including Panic! at the Disco lead singer Brendon Urie. Unfortch, Petey did not bring the Dodgers good luck as they lost their game against the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1. Ah well … I suppose all the blame cannot be placed on the little man who threw out the ceremonial first pitch, right? Better luck next time, Dodgers.

Everyone’s fave rocker who named his child after a burrough of New York City, was spotted out and about on the streets of LA yesterday lookin’ … well … let’s say confident in taking a fashion risk. With pants and suspenders that look like they were borrowed from Urkel, Pete Wentz was lookin’ very much like he was dressed for a coming flood:

While I don’t usually respond well to folks who dress more hipster-than-thou, I do give Petey snaps for the making the effort to look … different. Fashion is fearless and from the look of this outfit, Pete surely ain’t afraid of the ridicule he invites by wearing this ensemble. What do y’all think … is he in or is he out?

Today is Father’s Day (happiness to all the dads out there) and we get to check out a couple pics of Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz celebrating his first Father’s Day weekend with his firstborn baby boy Bronx Mowgli here in SoCal. Petey, Bronx and wife/mother Ashlee Simpson-Wentz made their way about town yesterday … and paid a little visit to the Famous Clothing store here in LA to pick up a few things:

Happily married couple Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz are the latest celebs to join the NOH8 Campaign to fight for marriage equality for same-sex couples in this country. Ashl33n were on hand to participate in a photoshoot here in LA yesterday to add their starpower to the cause … here is a pic of the pair on the set of their photoshoot:

Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz are keeping their mouths shut for gay marriage. The couple are the latest celebs to take part in NOH8, a campaign supporting efforts to overturn Proposition 8. They were shot by photographer Adam Bouska on Monday with the campaign’s signature look: “NOH8″ painted on their cheeks and duct tape over their mouths as a symbol of the pro-gay voices not being heard. Ashlee also holds a wedding veil in the pic. Which other rocker was in the studio with them? Blink-182′s Mark Hoppus also posed for NOH8. Like the Wentzes, Hoppus took part in the big Hollywood rally and protest shortly after the California Supreme Court upheld the ban on same-sex unions. “My son asked me one time, ‘Some guys have girlfriends and some girls have boyfriends, but do boys sometimes have boyfriends?’ ” Hoppus told us at the rally. “I said, ‘Yeah, all kinds of people love different kinds of people. And that’s the world we live in.’ ” Bouska launched NOH8 with his partner Jeff Parshley in November after the passage of Prop 8. Shanna Moakler and a gaggle of other former beauty queen titleholders posed for the campaign shortly after the Miss California Carrie Prejean controversy erupted in April.
