Shut Up & Dance!
First Look: Paula Abdul’s ‘Live To Dance’

Earlier this year there were reports going around that Paula Abdul was gettin’ ready to sign on and host a new version of the TV talent show Star Search. In fact, rumors were running rampant as to what Paula‘s next gig would be since she left American Idol a couple of years ago. Today, we know that she will be hosting her own competitive dance show on CBS called Live To Dance … and we also get our first look at the show.

'Red' alert!
The 2010 Tony Awards Are Handed Out

Last night actors and celebrities made their way to Radio City Music Hall in NYC, NY to attend the 2010 Tony Awards — Broadway’s biggest night. The red carpet sparkled as the various celebs made their way into the theater … here are a few photos:

It’s pretty crazy how the Tony Awards have turned into a major event to see our fave Hollywood celebs. With the increasing number of movie actors making their way to the Great White Way (like Scarlett Johansson, Denzel Washington, Catherine Zeta-Jones) the Tonys get a bit of a bump from new fans tuning in to watch the show … and what a show it was. Here are some photos from the Tony Awards show last night along with some deets about who won what:

“Red,” the anguished two-man drama about painter Mark Rothko and the timeless tug of war between art and commerce, was a big winner Sunday at the 2010 Tony Awards, receiving the best play prize and five other honors. “This to me is the moment of my lifetime,” said “Red” playwright John Logan. The play picked up Tonys for Michael Grandage, who won for best director of a play, and Eddie Redmayne, for featured performance by an actor in a play. Redmayne portrayed the young, increasingly disillusioned assistant to Rothko, the abstract expressionist who agonizes over whether to accept a lucrative commission for the Four Seasons restaurant. “This is the stuff dreams are made of. Wow,” Redmayne said, clutching his prize. “Red,” starring Alfred Molina as Rothko, was also awarded a Tony for best lighting design of a play, best sound design and best scenic design. “Memphis,” the rhythm ‘n’ blues musical set in the American South in the 1950s, won four Tonys, including best musical. A tale of segregation and integration, “Memphis” was also cited for best orchestration, original score and best book of a musical. Three Hollywood stars, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Denzel Washington and Scarlett Johansson, were first-time nominees and winners. “Fences,” a revival of August Wilson’s deeply personal drama about family, won for best revival of a play and its two stars, Washington and Viola Davis, won for best actors in a play. Even their acceptance speeches seemed to complement each other. “My mother always says, ‘Man gives the award, God gives the reward.’ I guess I got both tonight,” Washington said after winning for his performance as the sanitation man who might have been a baseball star. It was his first Tony Award and nomination. “I don’t believe in luck or happenstance. I absolutely believe in the presence of God in my life,” said Davis, honored for playing Washington’s all-sacrificing wife. “It feels like such a divine experience eight times a week.” Zeta-Jones won for best actress in a musical as the amorous actress in the revival of “A Little Night Music.” She thanked many, including her husband, fellow actor Michael Douglas, who she “gets to sleep with every night.” “Fela!” — the innovative Afro-beat biography of Nigerian superstar Fela Anikulapo-Kuti — and “La Cage aux Folles” — a revival of the classic Jerry Herman-Harvey Fierstein musical farce — each had 11 nominations, but won just three Tonys apiece. “La Cage Aux Folles” won for best revival of a musical, for David Hodge as best lead actor in a musical and director Terry Johnson for best direction of a musical. “Fela!” won for Bill T. Jones’ choreography, best costume design of a musical and best sound design of a musical. Johansson won for best featured performance as an actress in a play for her Broadway debut, the object of her uncle’s lust in Arthur Miller’s “A View From a Bridge.” “Every since I was a little girl I wanted to be on Broadway and here I am,” said Johansson, the voluptuous Hollywood star best known for such films as “Matchpoint” and “Lost in Translation.” The ceremony, from Radio City Music Hall and telecast on CBS, was hosted by Sean Hayes, who didn’t win as lead actor in a musical for “Promises, Promises,” but did put on a memorable show of song, jokes and costumes, dressing up as everyone from Spiderman to Little Orphan Annie. “I have actually managed to combine a good chance of losing with a good chance of bombing,” he joked during his opening monologue, which was widely applauded. Hayes began with a playful piano medley circling around “Give My Regards to Broadway,” then stepped up the beat and segued into a stomping “Blue Suede Shoes,” as performed by cast members from “Million Dollar Quartet.” Segments from “Promises, Promises,” “Come Fly With Me” and others followed, capped and stolen by a shouting medley from Green Day … Five-time Tony winner Angela Lansbury, a nominee Sunday for “A Little Night Music,” was named the first-ever honorary chairman of the American Theatre Wing. Special Tony Awards for lifetime achievement were given to playwright Alan Ayckbourn (“The Norman Conquests,” a trilogy that won the play-revival Tony last year), and actress Marian Seldes (“A Delicate Balance,” “Equus,” “Deathtrap,” “Three Tall Women”). The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Conn., received the regional theater award.

As new Idol is crowned, Simon Cowell says goodbye
‘American Idol’ 2010 Picks A New Winner

And so … America picks a new American Idol to reign over the landscape of competitive reality TV musicdom. Last night, the latest season of American Idol came to a close in a lavish finale episode that featured a host of big name musical acts, a tearful goodbye to the show’s meanest judge and — of course — the revelation of America’s pick for this year’s Idol. Here are a few photos of some of the big name musical acts who performed during last night’s finale ep:

While I am not a huge fan of the show itself, even I have to admit that American Idol puts on some of the most entertaining finale episodes on TV these days. Last night’s ep featured performances by Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Alanis Morissette, Bret Michaels, Carrie Underwood (herself a former AI winner) and more! It was deff worth tuning in just to see these pop stars pay homage to America’s biggest musical popularity contest. But, of course, the entire night lead up to the big announcement. In the end, there were 2 contestants left … Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze. But only one of them could be named this year’s American Idol. And the winner is …

The deal is close to done
Paula Abdul In Talks To Host ‘Star Search’

Happy news for fans of Paula Abdul AND the classic 80s talent TV show Star Search (the show, you might remember, which gave stars like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Destiny’s Child and more their first exposure on TV when they were children) … according to Entertainment Weekly, ABC is revamping the show for its return to air and the network is very close to sealing the deal that would have Paula host and/or judge the show! I don’t know about you but this sounds like it could be a really sweet gig for our dear Paula:

This just in: Paula Abdul is straight up headed back to TV! Sources confirm to me exclusively that the ex-American Idol judge is finalizing a deal to headline an updated version of Star Search, the great-granddaddy of all televised singing competitions, for ABC. Abdul’s role is still being defined, but I hear it will likely include some combination of hosting and judging. An ABC rep refused to comment. The Alphabet network had been wooing Abdul since last summer when she officially announced her departure from Idol. There was talk of her joining Dancing With the Stars in some capacity, but a deal never came to fruition. It’s not clear if Abdul’s Star Search gig would preclude her from joining former colleague Simon Cowell as a judge on the forthcoming US version of his UK monster hit, The X Factor, which is slated to debut on Fox in the fall of 2011. (Star Search is being targeted for this summer.) This isn’t the first time that Star Search, which premiered in 1983 with host Ed McMahon, has been resurrected from the TV bone pile. In 2003, CBS brought the show back with Arsenio Hall in an attempt to capitalize on the massive popularity of the then-new American Idol. The revival was axed in 2004.

Man … Star Search was such a great show in the 80s! They used to have all sorts of competition segments beyond just singing and dancing. Contestants also had the chance to compete in Comedy and Spokesmodel (which was always my fave!). As the show got more popular, the Spokesmodel category got axed … but I hope they bring it back for this new version! I vaguely remember the Arsenio Hall version of the show but I never watched it … I would hope that Paula‘s Star Search would be more popular. This sounds like a great opportunity for Paula … but it would be fabulous if she could do this AND get a hosting gig on Cowell‘s US version of X-Factor. I want my homegirl to make money! What do y’all think about this? Any Star Search fans in the hiz? Is this great news or what?

Your typical Saturday night
Paula Abdul Parties With Drag Queens & Strippers

Since Simon Cowell announced that he is leaving American Idol at the end of this season to launch the US version of his other competitive reality TV series The X Factor, rumors have been flying that Paula Abdul may join him on X Factor as a fellow judge. It’s unclear if negotiations have actually been taking place between Cowell and Abdul but we do know that she’s been keeping bizzy with other activities recently. Here is a pic, courtesy of TMZ, that shows Paula partying with famed drag queen Chi Chi LaRue at Here Lounge in West Hollywood, CA this past Saturday night:

While sources say she may have had coherent conversations with Simon Cowell about co-hosting “X-Factor,” Paula Abdul spent Saturday night hanging out with porn film director/drag queen Chi Chi LaRue at Garage/Red Saturdays at Here Lounge in West Hollywood. Don’t judge.

LOL!! Well, if negotiations for Paula to join X Factor really happened, then surely there must’ve been some conversation between the parties over the weekend … but that doesn’t mean that Paula didn’t have time to go out (and celebrate?) on Saturday night. Partying with drag queens and strippers is a great way to celebrate, don’t you think? Regarding the X Factor rumors, Paula addressed fan questions on Twitter by issuing the following tweet:

Hey Guys! I’m not ignoring all of your tweets regarding me, XFactor and Simon leaving AI. I look forward to being able to answer all your / questions very soon! I appreciate all your continued support and patients! All my Love! Paula

And so … we wait. What do y’all think, will Paula Abdul join Simon Cowell on The X Factor as one of the judges? If not, does she have a career in drag?

Part of AFI Fest 2009
‘Precious’ Premieres In Hollywood

Newcomer Gabourey Gabby Sidibe was joined by some of Hollywood’s elite, including Oprah Winfrey, at the Hollywood premiere of her new film Precious which is based on the book Push written by Sapphire. As you may or may not know, Precious has been getting serious awards show buzz for its stark portrayal of a young girl’s life and her struggle to overcome her circumstances in order to save her own life. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals at Grauman’s Chinese Theater last night and some deets about the Precious premiere:

With its U.S. limited release closing in by days, “Precious: Based on the Novel PUSH by Sapphire” has got a red carpet treatment in Los Angeles. The premiere, held on Sunday, November 1 at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, was a part of the drama movie’s participation at AFI Fest 2009, which runs from October 30 to November 7. Many of the cast members were present for the special screening event. Leading actress Gabourey Sidibe was present along with several of her co-stars, including Mo’Nique who stars as Precious’ mother Mary, Paula Patton who portrays Ms. Rain and Mariah Carey who takes on Mrs. Weiss. All of the last three mentioned actresses came to the premiere in the arms of their husbands. Mo’Nique was accompanied by Sidney Hicks, Paula by her singer/songwriter husband Robin Thicke, and Mariah by her actor/comedian/rapper hubby Nick Cannon. Joining them at the red carpet were director Lee Daniels as well as executive producer Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry. The festivity also managed to draw in a handful of celebrity guests. Mary J. Blige was spotted arriving with husband Kendu Isaacs, while actor Sidney Poitier tagged along his daughter Sydney Poitier. Other celebrities attending the premiere included Paula Abdul, Will Smith and Olivia Wilde. “Precious” is set in Harlem in 1987 and revolves around Claireece “Precious” Jones, an overweight, illiterate sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. Abused by her mother and raped by her father, she is pregnant for the second time and reaches the ninth grade without being able to read or write. Instead of being swallowed by depression, she tries to break from the chains of ignorance by digging deep into her own resources. November 6 will be the date the movie originally titled “Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire” opens in limited theaters across the country.

I’ve started reading Push, the book this movie is based on, and I’ve already been gutted by the tale. I can already tell that when I see this movie, and I will be seeing this movie as soon as I possibly can, I will bawl my eyes out. I’m so curious to see how this group of actors — Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey — bring this story to life. I’ve only read amazing things about the film’s star, Gabby Sidibe, so … I think we are in for a revelation when this film opens. Have any of y’all read the book? Are you looking forward to this film’s release? If you are totally unfamiliar with this film, check out the movie trailer HERE. It look amazing. I can’t wait to see it.

Forever Your Twirl
Paula Abdul Wields Her Spirit Stick

Former American Idol judge but Forever Your Girl Paula Abdul was spotted leaving her hotel here in NYC yesterday as she made her way to the Brooklyn Academy of Music for the VH1 Divas event last night … as you can see, she was wielding a fairly sizable spirit stick … behold:

As a former cheerleader, it makes sense that Paula would be schooled in the use of a twirling baton but I’m not sure why she needs to carry it with her in public. Perhaps she felt the need to drive away the hordes of fans and paparazzi who were trying to get near her or, oh right, mebbe she’s just crazy. All in all, tho, I have to give it up for her for handing her replacement on American Idol so well. She really shot herself in the foot by playing hardball with AI during negotiations … and now all she’s left with his her spirit stick. At least no one can take her stick away from her.

After her ABC negotiations fall apart, is she ready to go back to FOX?
Is Paula Abdul Ready To Renegotiate With ‘American Idol’?

Welp, it looks like her negotiations with the ABC network didn’t go exactly as she had hoped because word on the street today is that Paula Abdul may be ready to go back to American Idol, hat in hand, and work out a deal so that she can get her old job on the show back. As y’all are well aware, auditions for the new season of AI have already gotten underway in Denver, CO and Boston, MA WITHOUT Paula‘s presence because she announced on her official Twitter profile that she was leaving the show. Her plan, it seems, was to nab a new more high-paying job at ABC on either Dancing with the Stars and/or Ugly Betty. It turns out that neither of those two project worked out for her and now she’s got no prospects to pin her hopes on … which means, she may have to go back to AI and pretty much take whatever deal they are willing to give her:

Sources connected to Paula Abdul say Miss Paula wants back on “American Idol.” Our sources say Paula’s Twitter is retracted — at least in her mind – if the price is right. As we first reported, the magic number is $10 million. Will Paula move from that number? The way negotiations go in Hollywood … probably, but we don’t know for sure and if so how much she’s willing to give. We’re also told Paula’s meetings with ABC didn’t really go anywhere. She doesn’t want to do “Dancing with the Stars” — we’re told, in no small part, because she wants to be able to jump on a plane on a moment’s notice to rejoin her fellow judges on “Idol.” And, we’re told, Paula is piiiised at the producers of “Ugly Betty” for leaking the story that she was talking to them about doing the show. She’s not going to do it now. As for “Idol,” as far as we know they’ve been pretty hard-nosed and haven’t contacted her reps, but we’re not positive. In the end, we’re thinking “A.I.” isn’t gonna let a little Twitter torpedo one of its golden geese.

While I don’t believe these negotiations with American Idol are actually a PR stunt, I never really believed that Paula would not be back on American Idol when it returns to live TV next January. My guess is that she prolly felt that AI would do anything to keep her and when she overplayed her hand, they let her go. In order to save face, she attempted to get a new job (or jobs) at ABC and now that that didn’t work out according to plan she’s only got one recourse left — American Idol. I agree with TMZ, I don’t think FOX is gonna let her tweet about leaving the show end their relationship with Paula. They’re gonna work out a deal (prolly not to Paula‘s exact satisfaction), kiss, make-up and get back to work. Each party needs the other … I’m pretty confident they’ll work it all out in the end.

The 'ugly' truth
Paula Abdul In Talks With ABC To Guest Star On ‘Ugly Betty’

Paula Abdul spent much of yesterday in talks with ABC network boss Steve McPherson (who, it should be noted, she previously dated back in the day) to try and figure out if there is a way for her to take a job at the network. Last weekend it was reported that Dancing with the Stars was hoping to nab Abdul as a judge, guest judge or competitor but because she and Dancing judge Carrie Ann Inaba don’t really get along, that deal might never come to fruition. Now the talk is that Paula will do a guest stint on Ugly Betty … which would be a nice bit of turnabout considering Victoria Beckham previously appeared on Ugly Betty and just took over Paula‘s judging position (in a guest capacity) on American Idol. Apparently job-switching is hot right now in Hollywood:

At long last, someone to tell Betty she’s beautiful! Former American Idol judge Paula Abdul is in talks to guest star on Ugly Betty, sources confirm to me exclusively. Details of Abdul’s role are being kept under wraps but an Ugly insider tells me that she’d be playing a new temp at Mode who bonds with Becki Newton’s Amanda. If a deal can be made, this would mark Abdul’s first official post-Idol gig. (Her upcoming appearance on Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva was brokered before she twittered her resignation.)

I would love to see Paula on Ugly Betty, it would give me a reason to watch the show again. In all honesty, I think this high-profile job shopping is a way to try and force FOX to give in and give Paula her asking price to return to Idol. It is my understanding that quiet behind the scenes negotiations are still taking place between the network and Paula‘s people … if Paula gets her $10 million asking price, she will be back. I still think it’ll happen. If she’s savvy enough, she might get both the guest stint AND her Idol job back. We shall see …

Not a bad runner-up
Paula Abdul To Join ‘Dancing With The Stars’?

As each day passes without news that American Idol and/or Paula Abdul have come to their senses and gotten back together, it’s becoming less and less likely that Paula will return to the AI fold and get her job back. But, altho AI might be out of the picture it looks like Paula will be able find work elsewhere. We know that So You Think You Can Dance? really wants to get Paula on board on their show but methinks they don’t have the money to nab her … but the head honchos at ABC are now courting Ms. Abdul to join their wildly successful and popular competitive reality TV series Dancing with the Stars. ABC will take Paula in whatever capacity they can get her — as competitor or as judge:

While Paula Abdul won’t be returning to FOX’s American Idol, it seems plenty of other networks are interested in courting her for their reality TV competition shows. So is there a possible spot for Abdul at the judges’ table with Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli–the three judges on Dancing with the Stars? “Absolutely. I would love that,” ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Pasadena on Saturday. “I was a little stunned by the decision, and we would love to have her on Dancing.” McPherson added that Abdul could be added either as a participant, dancer or judge. “I think she’s a huge talent,” said McPherson. “There’s a sensitivity and an empathy that balances out Idol, and we’d love to get a piece of that.”

To be honest, there is no show bigger than American Idol on US TV right now … but Dancing with the Stars is up there in popularity. My guess is that, should Paula join the show, she will do so as judge not as competitor. I highly doubt she would risk putting her dancing reputation on the line to compete with the possibility that she might lose. If she joins the show, she’ll do so as judge. Considering that Paula got her start in showbiz as a choreographer, I think a dancing show would be best for her … absent a late night call from FOX begging her to come back to AI, that is. Whatever Paula decides to do, I’ll have her back. She and I go waaaaay back. She will be Forever My Girl.
