The hit film is being adapted for television
‘Paranormal Activity’ The TV Series?

Last Fall the low budget horror film Paranormal Activity became a movie box office hit of nearly The Blair Witch Project proportions and this Fall a sequel to the effectively scary film is already scheduled for release. Today we learn that not only do the makers of Paranormal Activity plan to scare the Hell out of us again in theaters but they are also planning to scare the Hell out of us … on TV:

The tremendous success of indie flick “Paranormal Activity” is stretched much wider with a TV deal. The small screen viewers may soon have trouble sleeping for a TV show is being worked on based on the movie about unknown being which disturbs a young couple’s sleep at nights. Creator of the movie, Oren Peli, is teaming up with Dreamworks TV and ABC Studios to develop the series which is going to be called “The River”. Executive producers Steven Schneider and Jason Blum who worked on the first installment and “Paranormal Activity 2″ screenwriter Michael R. Perry are also involved in creating the horror series. Not much different from the movie, “River” will show a recording from a video camera that captures inexplicable happenings. However, instead of being set in a bedroom like in the original movie, the series is bigger in spectrum by covering people who went missing on the Amazon River. A famed adventurer disappeared in the area and was looked for by his friends and crew … No idea when the project will come to life but THR said Dreamworks is “near a pilot deal” with ABC. And since this is a coveted project, ABC is bound to produce the pilot or a penalty is incurred. NBC is said as the other network which had an interest in the project.

No. Just … no. I loved the first film and I’m actually very excited for the sequel but this sounds like a bad idea. The surest way to kill the novelty of stories being told thru “found footage” is to serialize it for TV. I don’t understand how a TV series would even work … do we get to watch a portion of the “found footage” one hour at a time over the course of 22 episodes? And then what? No, story-telling conventions like this must be told singularly and wholly … we watch the footage, the end. This just sounds like a bad idea to me … which bums me out cuz I loved the film. Let’s hope this planned TV series never sees the light of day … let’s also hope that Paranormal Activity 2, due out next month, is just as scary (or scarier) than the first film was.

My Top Movies & TV Shows Of 2009

Yesterday I posted lists of my Fave Music of ’09 and today I present lists of my Fave Movies and TV shows of 2009. I had a hard time narrowing down my lists for both movies and TV but, in the end, I think I got the list right … at least for me :) Here are my Top 10 Fave Movies of 2009:

At #10 is Avatar:

This movie, in IMAX 3D, was an amazingly beautiful sight to see. I’ll admit that the story (not at all unique) wasn’t the best ever but the storytelling coupled with the amazing special effects makes this movie worthy of inclusion on any Top 10 List for 2009. It was said that Avatar would change the way we watch movies in theaters FOREVER … and while I wouldn’t exactly agree, I will say that James Cameron‘s 15 years devoted to the making of this film were well spent. Avatar may not be a game changer but it very well may be a movie that we look back in years to come as a masterful modern fairytale.

At #9 is Moon:

This movie was all story. While it was cool to look at, the real draw here was the story and acting performance by Sam Rockwell. For most of the film, he acted opposite himself … and he did so very, very well. This movie was not really seen by a lot of people but I think those that did see did really enjoy it … I know I did.

At #8 is The September Issue:

This movie may have been called the “real-life Devil Wears Prada” but it was so much more than that. It was a really intriguing look into what it takes to publish the singly most important magazine issue in the world of Fashion. I loved seeing Vogue Editor In Chief Anna Wintour in action in this film but the real star of The September Issue is Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington. This film prolly wasn’t very interesting to folks not interested in Fashion but I loved it immensely.

At #7 is Taken:

Taken was prolly the biggest surprise for me this year. The film was released in France early in 2008 and then in the UK in Fall 2008. It wasn’t released in the US until January of 2009 and without much fanfare. I think I went to see it on a fluke and I was totally blown away by how fun the film was. Liam Neeson, action star. It was kind of like a Bourne Identity film but with an older, more mature hero. When I sat down to compile this list, I knew Taken would be on it because it’s one of the films that I really remember enjoying this year.

At #6 is Drag Me to Hell:

Okay, I take it back … Taken was not the biggest surprise for me this year, Drag Me to Hell was — for sure! I distinctly remember laughing out loud the first time I saw the trailer for Hell. It looked stupid and I had no plans to waste my time … then word of mouth started going around and people I trusted said that they loved it. I checked it out and, wouldn’t you know it, I loved it too! The movie wasn’t trying to be anything other than what it is … a jump in your seat, fun, horror flick. It’s a lot of fun.

The $11,000 film has made $62 million ... and counting
‘Paranormal Activity’ Does ‘Entertainment Weekly’ Magazine

Paranormal Activity, the little horror movie that could, continues to rack up millions at the box office and is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine. Much like the late 90′s low budget film The Blair Witch Project took the box office by storm, so too is Paranormal raking in the big bucks. Here are the stars, Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat, on the cover of the new issue of EW mag and a portion of the coverstory article:

Paranormal Activity began its otherworldly existence as a little horror flick, made for $11,000 and shot entirely in the director’s house over the course of seven days. Now, thanks to a little help from Steven Spielberg and a savvy world-of-mouth marketing campaign by Paramount, its box office total has reached $62 million and counting. Hollywood is spellbound — and there are even plans for a sequel. But the film has proved positively life-changing for stars Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat, who were originally paid $500 each for their work (and who, like writer-director Oren Peli, will reap some of the film’s profits). “I don’t have to have a job other than acting,” says Featherston, who was until recently waiting tables. “So I bought a handbag,” she adds with a laugh. Now it’s a matter of keeping their careers in motion. “I just have to get out there and audition and use this opportunity to the best of my advantage,” she says. “I’ve been at this a long time, and I’m not gonna stop now.” Though neither she nor Sloat have lined up their next job, they’ve both signed with agents. And they seem almost embarrassed by the VIP treatment the industry is starting to give them. “The quality of meetings we’re able to get right now are much higher. So are the scripts,” says Featherston. Sloat adds: “Just going in the room with casting directors is a lot different. It’s like, ‘Okay, I’ve seen your work, I know what you can do. Let’s just see you in this role.’” The actor has at least one idea for spending his newfound capital. “I would love to have a massive party and meet all the sweaty, geeky, awesome fans who posted on the Internet and believed in the film,” he says. “I just want to thank them.”

I’ve already pledged my love for the film but I’ve been hearing increasing backlash that the film “isn’t scary” and that it “sucks” which is totally normal when the hype level gets this high. In all honesty, I’m quite sure the film is not at all scary to a lot of people so their complaints are totally valid. I remember that Blair Witch enjoyed about 2 weeks of love from EVERYONE before the hype took over and people started complaining how un-scary it was. With films like these, you have to just ignore the hype, let the movie take you into its world and you either like it or you don’t. I have to say that in this new age of the Internet over-saturation, I’m pleased to know that a tiny film like this can still achieve massive amounts of success. I just hope they don’t kill this great, fun thing with an endless stream of terrible sequels.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark?

Last night my dear, dear friend Charlie hosted a private screening of the new horror film Paranormal Activity on the Paramount Studios Lot for a group of our friends and we had the best time ever!! You may have heard some of the buzz surrounding Paranormal Activity (that it is the new Blair Witch Project and that it is the “scariest movie ever”). I can attest that the movie is scary and it does come across like Blair Witch … it’s really a fantastic movie and the consensus was that everyone loved it:

Without giving too much away (because I feel the movie works best if you see it cold), the story revolves around footage made by a couple in San Diego, CA who believe they are being haunting by … something. The movie is made of that “footage”. Much like The Blair Witch Project turned Hollywood on its ear by turning a DIY approach into something very cool, Paranormal works in the same way. I kid you not … the movie is freaky and you WILL think about it after you finish seeing it (particularly, the ending). It’s a fun, scary movie y’all … you gotta see it. Check ParanormalMovie.com to see if it’s playing in your area and if it’s not, DEMAND that they show it in your area. It’s soooooooo creepy scary, I think you will LOVE it. If you are looking for a bit more spoilery info about this movie, THIS review by the LA Times is a great one.

After the movie, some of us posed for a photo:

Some of us were feeling shy and didn’t want to pose but we all had a great time. Darion, his friend Yasmin, Josh, David and I made our way to Luna Park for late dinner and drinks to finish out the night. So much fun … ’til we had to go home and turn off the lights and go to sleep :(

Next To ‘Paranormal’

Blah!! I’ve been dealing with some server issues for the past hour or so so the site has been up and down … it seems to be back to normal, which is a good thing :) David and I made it back home from San Francisco, CA last night and immediately got settled in as best we could … now all of our luggage (and their contents) are strewn all over the house and everything’s a mess … home, sweet, home.

Tonight, my dear friend Charlie has organized a private screening of the new horror film Paranormal Activity (which is being described as the new Blair Witch Project) on the Paramount Studios Lot this evening for me and a bunch of friends TONIGHT:

Oh man … I’ve heard so many great things about this film … I can’t wait. About 13 of us will be seeing it this evening and we’re all very excited :) Check out the movie’s official site HERE and DEMAND that the movie be shown in your hometown. The way I understand it, the only way for Paranormal Activity to hit theaters where you live is to get people to DEMAND the movie be shown. I’ll be sure to let y’all know what I think of it but if you want to see this movie in your town, you gotta do something about it ;) Check out the trailer … it looks like a really great movie!!

We’ve got a couple fun events planned for the weekend … so, there’ll be no downtime just yet. I’m happy to be home tho.
