"I thought being different was a bad thing."
M.I.A. Does ‘Nylon’ Magazine

On Monday we got to see M.I.A. on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Complex magazine … today, we get to see her gracing the cover and pages of the June/July issue of Nylon magazine. Here is M.I.A.‘s Nylon coverphoto and some excerpts from her coverstory interview:

On her mistrust of Google:
“Anybody who is called the government is right. And anybody who isn’t called the government is not right… And you know, all governments are connected to Google, and all governments can shift their search engines so only what they want you to see comes up… I want kids to be aware of this digital circumstance… Everyone on the Internet is like, “Oh my God, come and join Facebook!” They’re all so optimistic… and really, everyone is fucking you up behind the screens. And I don’t like that. It makes it difficult for me to interact with my fans knowing that. Google and Facebook were developed by the CIA, and when you’re on there, you have to know that.”

On her film school interview:
“I said, ‘If you don’t accept me, you’re going to change my life completely, because I’m going to go outside and get on the bus and I’ll be a crackhead prostitute and go to jail. And three years from now, I’ll come out of jail and make the best film.”

On her teenage years in Los Angeles:
I was always going out to LA because my cousin lived there, and she knew all the Bloods and Crips. So I was hanging out with her, having crazy times, and then I’d come back and be like, ‘I hung out with Tupac last week!’ and nobody knew who he was!”

On her unique sound:
“I thought being different was a bad thing, but then I realized it was just different because it hadn’t been done before.”

On doing commercials:
“Coca Cola wanted me to be their face, so of course I said no, and then Pepsi came to me and I said no again. But eventually, one day, I’m going to lose the battle and just be like, ‘Fuck it,’ and say yes… But I want to be able to be like, ‘Yeah, I made a sacrifice, but at least I have about 10 other people behind me who are worth it and who are going to benefit from all that money.”

On Paper Planes:
“Everyone was like, ‘You need to edit [the gunshots] out. They said, ‘You need something that’s going to get on the radio.’”

M.I.A.‘s full interview can only be read in the print edition of Nylon but these excerpts give you a pretty good feel for what’s on M.I.A.‘s mind these days. After the jump, check out a few photos from M.I.A.‘s Nylon photospread — they are not to be missed …

"Love Sucks"
The Cast Of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Does ‘Nylon’ Magazine

Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, the principal stars of the CW TV series The Vampire Diaries, share the cover of the new issue of Nylon magazine this month. This ménage of actors will return to the TV airwaves in an all new ep of the series TONIGHT but right now we get to check out their hawt three-way chemistry in the pages of Nylon magazine beforehand:

Those well acquainted with Serena and Little J may find this fact hard to believe: Vampire Diaries, The CW’s budding show about bloodsuckers and the teen girls who love and / or get eaten by them, has double the number of Gossip Girl viewers. What makes it such a hit? It could be the current cultural zeitgeist of Edward, Bella, Sookie, Bill, and immortal drama. It could be the lingering teen appeal of star Nina Dobrev (remember her from Degrassi?). Or maybe it’s just damn fun and funny. Luke Crisell – who calls the show “like Dawson’s Creek with less talk and more action” – sat down with the cast of and asked them himself.

On the similarities between Twilight, True Blood, and Vampire Diaries:
“When the show first started… you automatically thought Twilight. But once you continue, there’s a whole other side of it that goes a lot deeper… It’s about letting everyone know that we’re different but we all respect each other.” — Nina Dobrev

On the sudden success of the show:
“Do I thing the show would be successful as it is, if it weren’t for all that? No.” — Paul Wesley

Hey Ian, is there any similarity between LOST and Vampire Diaries?
“[My character] is gonna be the coolest character on television. There was no doubt about it. It reminded me of Sawyer, Josh Holloway’s character on LOST. He was always the character I secretly wished I could play.”

I didn’t think I was going to but I have really become a fan of this show. I started watching it just because it was new but I didn’t expect to get wrapped up in the storyline … at all. I’m not sure what it is, exactly, but I keep wanting to tune in to see what is going on in the shadowy town of Mystic Falls. I’m glad the show is returning from hiatus tonight because, as I understand it, things are about to get really interesting. But, I digress. After the jump, check out a few photos of Nina, Paul and Ian from this issue of Nylon magazine …

"Nobody remembers the nice girl, you know? So it's fun to play the bad girl"
Kristin Cavallari Does ‘Nylon’ Magazine

Kristin Cavallari, who is about to take the MTV reality TV series The Hills by storm in just a few short weeks, is featured in the new issue of Nylon magazine. Here is a photo from her pretty cool photospread and some excerpts from the accompanying article:

Back in 2003, when MTV was casting for Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County — the show from which The Hills spun-off — Cavallari, then just a sophomore at Laguna Beach High, already had an innate sense of what producers and audiences craved. Her Locklear-ean potential was impossible to miss. “One of the questions was, ‘Who do you think’s going to be prom queen?’” she recalls of the audition form. “And I said, ‘I don’t know, and I don’t care as long as it’s not Lauren Conrad.’ So it’s like, I know what I’m doing, and obviously they’re not going to put on some boring person who doesn’t make good TV” … Cavallari will be replacing her sworn frenemy since time immemorial (or at least sophomore year), the notoriously bland Conrad. Naturally, the blogs have been all ablaze with Team Lauren versus Team Kristin, each weighing in on the show’s future. But one thing Cavallari’s haters and supporters can agree upon is that her presence on The Hills will inject some much-needed drama into a show on which, as most everyone who watches it acknowledges, nothing much happens. Of the little that does happen (jealous infighting, mostly), do the show’s fans suspect or even care if it’s real? “Maybe some do,” Cavallari speculates. “Maybe some really want to believe that these really are our lives. It’s like any other TV show — obviously these people are playing characters, nobody really cares if it’s their real life” … Cavallari insists that the show isn’t her reality. “It’s a soap opera about 20-year olds living in L.A. with lots of money. If it was a reality show,” she says, her eyes darting self-consciously down to my digital recorder on the table, “they would focus on me being an actress. You know what I mean?”

Um, no … if The Hills was a show focusing on Kristin or any other castmember’s “being an actress” then it would be a comedy, not reality TV. But, really, who cares? The show is deliciously entertaining and totally void of any substance … it’s fun! But, none of this is really news … it’s just refreshing to hear KC talk so candidly about what is really going on on this “reality TV” series. After the jump, check out a few more photos from Kristin‘s photospread in Nylon magazine …

The new kids on the block get some US press
The New Cast Of ‘Skins’ Does ‘Nylon’ Magazine

The third season of Skins, which featured an entirely new cast from the first two seasons of the show, may already be finished in the UK but the season is scheduled to air here in the US on BBC America sometime soon. So, to prepare, Nylon magazine is featuring some of the new cast in a feature in their new issue in order to introduce the new kids to the US audience:

Nylonmag.com posted an interview online with some of the new cast but it has mysteriously been taken down for some unknown reason. While we wait for it to come back, let’s check out a few photos of some of the individual castmembers — including Kaya Scodelario, Luke Pasqualino, Lily Loveless and Ollie Barbieri — which you can see after the jump …

It's hipster to be square
Lindsay Lohan Does ‘Nylon’ Magazine

Lindsay Lohan is featured on the cover and in the pages of the 10th anniversary issue of Nylon magazine. In her coverstory interview, Lindsay talks about her love of photoshoots, her opinion on Britney Spears and alludes to a new film project with Sean Penn … and hopefully Seth Rogan. Here is Lindsay on the cover of the 10th Anniversary issue of Nylon and some excerpts from her coverstory interview:

It’s our 10th anniversary, so we knew our cover had to be huge. That meant only one thing: Lindsay Lohan. The starlet and self proclaimed “tabloid obsession” sits down with NYLON for a candid chat.

On Having Her Picture Taken: I love doing photo shoots… I mean, if I could just sign with IMG and do ad campaigns and model more, I’d do that… because that’s fun for me. That’s not work.

Her one Mean Girls reference: There’s not much I can do about the fact that I’ve become a kind of tabloid obsession. I can’t change that. And yes, the websites, the gossip pages, and all of that stuff have hurt my career – they’re like the Burn Books of Hollywood… but I really don’t feel like I should have to prove myself to anyone because of living out my college years in the public eye. I’m glad everything happened the way it did.

On Britney Spears: She’s marketed as an entertainer, which is what she is. Not necessarily as, like, an artist. And I respect that about her, cause she doesn’t want to pretend.

On her future: I’m talking to [lots of people]. One is Sean Penn – I spoke to him again the other day. We’re trying to get Seth Rogen for this project, but Seth won’t call us back. So call us back, Seth, if you’re reading this!

Oooh! Another scintillating interview with L. Lo. I really hope the full interview has more to than these quotes hint at. Tho, what more can be asked of Lindsay Lohan that hasn’t been asked already? After the jump, check out a few photos from her photospread — you know you want to see more pics of Lindsay posing with a cigarette …

Isn't really a fan of "bullshit" questions from 'Twilight' fans
‘Twilight’s Kristen Stewart Does ‘Nylon’ Magazine

Twilight Saga star Kristen Stewart, who plays the living-breathing incarnation of protagonist Bella Swan, is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Nylon magazine. In her coverstory interview, Kristen talks about topics as varied as how uncomfortable she is on talk shows to her love life (yes, this interview has range). Additionally, Kristen Stewart goes on the record about all those rabid Twilight fans out there who like to ask her, in her own words, “bullshit” questions that don’t really mean anything to her. Way to bite the hand that feeds you, girl. Here is Kirsten‘s Nylon magazine coverphoto and some portions from her coverstory interview:

Though she’d caught our eye with her piercing turn with Emile Hirsch in Into the Wild last year, it was her Twilight role as Bella Swann, the mortal love of a “vegetarian” vampire named Edward Cullen (a phrase now synonymous in America with “hot, unattainable soul mate”) that showed she was ready for her NYLON cover turn. Apparently, Superbad director Greg Mottola agrees – he’s cast Kristen opposite Jesse Eisenberg in his new flick Adventureland.

Here’s what Kristen told us about her new life as a bonafide, tabloid-chased celebrity. Read the new issue of NYLON for even more about the world of a Hollywood veteran, but a very new movie star.

On the Twilight Madness: “Anywhere we’d go for Twilight was a psychotic situation. The sound was deafening, and it’s thoughtless, as well… You get a slew of all these bullshit questions like, ‘What’s it like to kiss a vampire?’ and ‘How much do you love Robert?’ Then you’ll get one that’s actually real, but you’re like, ‘No, I can’t right now, I can’t even consider [it].”

On her memorable David Letterman appearance: “I feel like I have nothing to say on those shows… I’m not good at the funny thing—most people are really great on those shows. I don’t have a contrived personality that [I can] just pump out [for] a five-minute segment, so I end up sitting there and looking kind of baffled. Embarassing.”

And no, she’s not dating Robert Pattinson: “It’s just totally false… Rob and I are good friends. We went through a lot together, so we feel very close. But if we go out in public, every little detail is scrutinized, like the way I stand next to him. And it’s like, I know this guy really fucking well [laughs]. It’s only natural that we’re sort of leaning on each other, because we’re put in the most fucking psychotic situations.”

On who she’s actually dating: “He’s older than me—he’s 20 now—but when you’re 13 and he’s turning 16, it was always sort of an out-of-reach thing. Then you get a little older, and you realize, ‘Oh, What the fuck am I thinking? I can have you, like, lickity…’” she snaps her fingers, laughing. “He’s awesome.”

LOL. You gotta love that the girl tells it like she sees it. To be honest, I am actually impressed that Kirsten Stewart just cannot dumb herself down to pander to the insipid questions that get thrown at her by rabid fans. I think it is a much better thing for young girls who want to relish in the fantasy to get a little dose of intelligent reality from the actress they so dearly look up to. I really hope Kristen Stewart never changes, she seems like a very smart girl … and we deffo need more smart girls in Hollywood. After the jump, check out a few photos from Kristen‘s Nylon magazine photospread …
