‘The Beautiful Life: TBL’ Gets Canceled

After only 2 episodes
Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Sad news for fans of Ashton Kutcher’s new primetime drama The Beautiful Life: TBL … all 3 of you. The CW has decided to cancel the series after airing only 2 eps. Plagued by poor ratings from the start, the drama which stars Mischa Barton didn’t really have a chance. And so, we raise our plastic utensils and give a hearty Peace the Spork Out to The Beautiful Life: TBL:

The new fall season has claimed its first casualty with the cancellation of “The Beautiful Life: TBL”. Although 13 episodes have been ordered for the first season, The CW on Friday, September 25 confirmed that it has opted to pull the plug on the Ashton Kutcher-produced drama series after airing only two episodes. The show chronicling the lives of young models in the fast lane has been pulled off the schedule effective immediately. Production of the show has been shut down. Despite the fact that the series has been filmed to its seventh episode, the network has no plans to air any of the remaining finished episodes. The cancellation news didn’t come in as a shock since “Beautiful Life” had a poor rating right from the start. The September 16 premiere only managed to draw in 1.4 million viewers, and this Wednesday, September 23, episode barely scraped above 1 million viewers. To make it worse, the latter one generated a 0.5 rating in the adult demo. There is yet word on what will fill the 9 P.M. Wednesday time period. Announcement for a replacement is expected to come from The CW at least by Monday, September 28. Rumor has it, the network, which recently picked up “Fly Girls” and a Tinsley Mortimer docusoap, may replace it with reruns of “Melrose Place”.

Actually, The CW sent out a press release late yesterday announcing that “encores” of new Melrose Place eps that air on Tuesday night will reair on Wednesday nights, in the time slot that was allotted for TBL. To be honest, I never watched the show so I don’t know if it sucked or not personally … but I haven’t read a good thing about it. HMMM … I wonder if Mischa, who has been a bit of trainwreck this Summer knows about the cancellation yet. After the jump, check out a couple of new photos of Ms. Barton out and about in public yesterday before news of her show’s cancellation was announced — it’s not a pretty sight …

Mischa Barton Talks To ‘Time Out New York’ About Her Mental Breakdown

"Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom about things ... just to feel better again."
Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Mischa Barton is speaking out for the first time since she was hauled away to the psychiatric ward of Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, CA last month after it was reported she suffered a mental breakdown. Just weeks after she was hospitalized in LA, Mischa made her way to NYC to begin production on her new CW TV series The Beautiful Life (in the role of a fashion model with a penchant for drugs). Time Out New York magazine scored the exclusive first interview with Mischa wherein she explains in her own words what happened last month. Here are excerpts from her interview that focus on her mental breakdown:

As part of its Fall Fashion issue, on stands September 10, Time Out New York met with Mischa Barton for her first in-depth interview since being placed under alleged “involuntary psychiatric hold” at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in July. Other medical issues nearly delayed filming of her New York–set TV series, The Beautiful Life: TBL. Barton, 23, plays model Sonja Stone, a drugged-up diva trying to get her career back on track (real life, meet show!). Yet during our talk—on the couch in a Tribeca photo studio—the O.C. starlet looks healthy, sits tall and comes off as self-aware and self-deprecating …

A lot of people are watching you now, speculating you were in rehab back in July.
Here’s what happened: Before the show started, I was traveling abroad for contract stuff and I went through a terrible surgery—a wisdom tooth surgery, all four removed. It was a nightmare. I’ve never had surgery before—it all went wrong and I had to have a second surgery and it almost delayed shooting because it was a nightmare to me, because I couldn’t deal with the thought of not getting there on time. So with the travel, and surgery and prep for the show—it was hell.

Is this when you were checked into Cedars?
Yeah, I went through a tough spot where everything compounded on me, and it was like a perfect storm, like everything was happening to me at once. The show, travel and then this fairly routine surgery that went wrong—it’s still just healing. But I had to get through it without proper painkillers because I couldn’t take those during work. So it’s been a nightmare.

How did you end up in a psychiatric hospital?
I was down in the dumps about everything there for a while. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom about things and have to get the most stressed-out just to feel better again. I got completely stressed-out and couldn’t handle everything, and now I feel really in control.

Was it an official nervous breakdown? Drugs?
I don’t know. I don’t know. I had a friend who had a quasi–nervous breakdown, but I’m not sure it’s the same thing. I’m not sure I’m capable of a full-on nervous breakdown, but it was pretty bad. It didn’t last that long. It was more about the pain. I have a newfound respect for people who have chronic pain. I started getting migraines.

How long were you in Cedars?
They don’t keep you in the hospital. I wasn’t there very long.

Did you sit around sharing feelings and making mosaics—that kind of thing actually helped someone I know who was in an institution.
Not really.

Did they teach you how to deal with the pain?
Not really. I just wanted to get back to work. The doctor told me I was lucky I didn’t lose feeling in my lips and face, which would have been horrifying and couldn’t act properly. My mom was like, “Now’s a good time to get it done, before the show.” And it was the worst time to do it.

What was it like for your mom?
[Rolls eyes] I don’t know. [Looks away] It was miserable for everyone. But I really don’t know.

Is your mom the one who admitted you into the hospital involuntarily?
[Nods yes and rolls eyes again] I’ll tell you that story but not the whole world. The funny thing is, if all this happened in New York, no one would care.

People would be like, “Nervous breakdown? I had one yesterday too. Where are we going to brunch?”
[Laughs] Yes, exactly, New York lets you be who you are, and people aren’t as judgmental. I’m so glad to be back here.

HMMM … I have to say all the “eye rolling” sounds as if she doesn’t understand the severity of her dangerous behavior. Where it not for her mother who wouldn’t let her “be who [she] is” who knows what could’ve happened to her. Earlier in the interview she mentions how she’s been going to nightclubs (with designer Zac Posen) since she was 15 because she “grew up in New York and [she] grew up fast” … it seems that she didn’t quite learn all the lessons that she prolly should have. To be honest, I’m glad that she seems to be OK now and that she seems more focused but … I dunno … I really fear that her reckless behavior might have very unfortunate circumstances some day. Eye rolling aside, I truly hope she has learned to curb her dangerous behavior … for her own good.

Mischa Barton’s ‘Beautiful Life’

... is startin' to look less beautiful
Monday, August 10th, 2009

Here are new photos of Mischa Barton lookin’, well, odd on the NYC set of her new TV series The Beautiful Life which, in all honesty, doesn’t look all that beautiful at all:

Mischa has been in NYC ever since she was released from the psychiatric hospital here in SoCal and she’s been pretty much making the most of her new freedom. I believe these photos are of her first actual work on the TV show. I dunno, I still do not think she should be throwing herself into a new project so soon after her mental breakdown, and these photos don’t help, but she is a big girl and I guess she’s gonna do what she’s gonna do. I guess it would be easier to believe that she’s no longer crazy if she didn’t, well, look crazy.

Mischa Barton Lookin’ Worse For The Wear

Pushing herself too far?
Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Earlier this week we saw photos of Mischa Barton all dolled up for a night on the town in NYC mere weeks after she was released from the psychiatric hospital where she was involuntarily admitted for posing a danger to herself. Today we get to see photos of Mischa lookin’ really rough after a long day of work and working out … could it be that the poor girl is pushing herself too far?

Photos like these, of a young person lookin’ haggard and bedraggled, would be cause for concern under any circumstances … but Mischa was JUST under psychiatric care and is now on the loose again. All of her castmates on her new series The Beautiful Life claim that she is ready to be back to work … but it just seems to me that those comments are just a lot of lip-service because are they really going to say otherwise? I’m not convinced that MB is ready to be back to work, let alone to be back on the party scene … and photos like these only fortify my concern.

Mischa Barton Gets Back To The Party Scene

Just weeks after being released from the mental ward
Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Mischa Barton ain’t gonna let a little thing like being involuntarily admitted to the mental ward to undergo psychiatric evaluation after it was determined that she was a danger to herself keep her from gettin’ her party on. After making her way to NYC last week to begin work on her new TV series The Beautiful Life, Mischa clearly felt of sound mind enough to slip into a party dress and paint the town red this weekend … behold:

Despite only being released from hospital a few days ago, Mischa Barton is determined to enjoy herself. Sporting a flesh-baring outfit and a smile, the actress was seen partying last night looking the picture of health. But just a few days ago, the 23-year-old was being treated in a psychiatric hospital, after being placed under ‘involuntary psychiatric hold’. Following her release, the actress has made a concerted effort to return to her everyday life. And judging by her choice in outfit, Mischa appears intent on making a statement. The OC star opted for a backless cutaway dress and black and pink Christian Louboutin shoe-boots. The actress was joined by designer Richie Rich and Daisy Lowe, who DJ’d at the Arizona Beverages & Music Unites All Points West celebration in New York. Mischa is currently in New York where she is due to film her new TV series The Beautiful Life … Production for The Beautiful Life, which stars Barton as a drug-addict supermodel, was delayed after Mischa was removed from her home on July 15 amid reports of drinking and drug-taking. The actress was held under Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code – the same code which hospitalised Britney Spears twice in 2008. The section stipulates authorities can hold a person against their will for up to 72 hours if they present a danger to themselves or others, are gravely disabled or suffer from a mental disorder.

HMMM. I don’t really think it’s a good idea for someone in Mischa’s state to spend her free nights partying but, well, here you have it. It’s insane to me that this poor girl doesn’t seem to have a friend or family member in the world to help steer her in the right direction. It’s unreal that a person can go from practically being dragged away in a net to the mental ward one week to partying it up with boozy D-listers the next. I really hope she gets a handle on her life before something goes dangerously wrong. It looks like Mischa likes playing with fire … I just hope she doesn’t get really burned in the process.

Mischa Barton Shows Up For A New Photoshoot

Working girl
Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Mischa Barton, who was hauled away to the mental ward at Cedars-Sinai Hospital here in LA just a couple of weeks ago and has already been released and made her way to NYC to begin work on her TV series The Beautiful Life just this week, was spotted today making her way out of the Kaufman Astoria Studios in Astoria, NY after showing up for a photoshoot (presumably for her new TV show). Honestly, she looked good … you’d've never guessed she was under psychiatric care just a couple short weeks ago by looking at these photos:

Altho I still think it is WAY TOO SOON for the girl to be back at work on a TV series after suffering a mental breakdown that resulted in psychiatric care, I do wish her all the best. It’s such a shame that celebs this young are already going thru breakdowns so soon into their careers. It sounds like Mischa has substance abuse problems and pretending they’ll go away by throwing yourself into your work isn’t the best strategy for turning your life around. But … we don’t really know what happened so … all we can do is send her our best thoughts and wishes for a happy and successful life. Good luck, Mischa!
