Headed For The Mouse’s House

After spending most of my week reading about the life of Walt Disney, and since we haven’t been to the park since my birthday LAST JULY, David and I have decided to head on down to Anaheim, CA to spend some time at Disneyland. We don’t normally go so long between visits but we’ve been so bizzy in the past few months that we very sadly missed out on visiting Disneyland for HalloweenTime and For Xmas. BUT, the time is finally right … the weather will be sunny and gorgeous today so … off to Disney we go!

Passing The Time In Disney’s World

Yesterday was my last day in Detroit and for the most part, it was a great day. I got to relax in the early part of the day with Sarah and Mark as we shared an AMAZING Middle Eastern meal from Cedar Garden in Dearborn, MI. I got to spend a bit of time with parents in the afternoon before I had to be at the airport for my 5:30 flight back to LA. Unfortch, that’s where my good day ended … and my frustrating evening/night got started. It turns out I had a 4 hour delay to endure before I could begin my 5+ hour flight home but … thanks to good ol’ Walt Disney, I was able to survive my much-delayed return home.

Hangin’ At The Mouse’s House

Yesterday was a fantastically fun day for David and me … we met up with our friend who is also named David (visiting from NYC) and we 3 made our way down to Disneyland for the day. I have been DYING to see Captain EO (which began showing at Disney last Tuesday) and this was our weekend to do so:

We started our day at the California Adventure park but I have to advise any of y’all thinking of going … stay away for a while. Half the park is closed off for renovations and, except for the California Screamin’ rollercoaster, it’s not worth the hassle. We had a much better time at Disneyland. After the jump, check out some of our fun photos and find out who WE MET at Disneyland at the end of the night …

The Balloons Take Center Stage At The 83rd Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Macy’s Department Store hosted their 83rd annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC, NY today and, as usual, the big inflated balloons that made their way down (well, over) the streets of New York were the main attraction. Here are a few photos of some of the big character balloons that were included in today’s parade and read a fun piece on how the balloons themselves have become a NYC tradition of their own:

The tradition that is Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has spun off its own tradition — on Thanksgiving eve, New Yorkers and tourists alike gather on the Upper West Side of New York City to watch their favorite characters come to life in the forms of giant balloons. On Wednesday, cartoon balloon characters were inflated in a public ceremony before their televised march down Seventh Avenue Thursday morning in the 83rd annual Macy’s parade. The balloon line-up includes returning favorites such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Spiderman and Kermit the Frog. The only balloon newcomer this year is the Pillsbury Doughboy. Each year, in a tradition that began when Felix the Cat became the first Macy’s parade balloon in 1927, all balloons are pre-inflated outside the museum, and are held down with nets and sandbags during the night before the parade. Every balloon is the product of months of design and testing by the self-named “Balloonatics,” who work in the Macy’s Parade Studio to turn pencil sketches into ready-for-flight balloons. Sketches become giant clay sculptures the exact size of the parade balloon, and polyurethane fabrics are cut based on the sculptures, then heat-sealed to make the balloon. Several indoor and outdoor tests are conducted with the balloons by hundreds of balloon handlers, to make sure each balloon can make its flight safely and intact. The four main giants of Thursday’s parade will be Sailor Mickey, Ronald McDonald, Spiderman and the Pillsbury Doughboy. Other notable appearances include a 53.5-foot high Pikachu whose cheeks will emit a rosy glow, and Flying Ace Snoopy which will be making its record 34th appearance in the Thanksgiving Parade. The 31 balloons that will be featured on Thursday were inflated Wednesday and on public display in a five-block radius around New York’s American Museum of Natural History, from 81st to 77th streets between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. Macy’s workers used hoses to fill each character with helium, section by section, in a careful, time-consuming process. The inflation ceremony attracted a throng of onlookers who were ushered around the netted balloons as they were inflated in preparation for Thursday’s parade.

I’ve never been able to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in person but I have seen it many, many times on TV when I was a kid. I don’t know why but I still love seeing these balloons in the parade … I guess they speak to the kid in me. I’m very happy to see that Pikachu from Pokémon is still included in the parade all these years after the manic fad has died down here in the US. As far as traditions go, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons are one of my faves. Which of the Macy’s balloons are your faves?

The ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Kids Visit Disneyland

The REAL stars of the Academy Award winning film Slumdog Millionaire made their way down to Anaheim, CA yesterday to celebrate their Best Picture win at Disneyland! Ayush Mahesh Khedekar (who played Young Jamal), Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail Sheikh (who played Young Salim), Rubina Ali Rafiq Qureshi (who played Young Latika), Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar (who played Middle Latika), Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala (who played Middle Salim), Tanay Hemant Chheda (who played Middle Jamal) and Madhur Mittal ( who played older Salim) got to visit the famed theme park that most children around the world dream they could visit. I can only imagine what a thrill it must’ve been for these kids in particular to get to go to Disneyland … which I’m sure was much more exciting for them then it was to win an Academy Award. Here are a couple group shot photos of the kids at Disney yesterday:

It’s been a whirlwind few days for the children of “Slumdog Millionaire,” which Sunday scooped up the best picture Oscar. In the four days the children have spent in the U.S., the young stars have been swarmed by paparazzi, met celebrities including Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, and partied the night away after their film claimed eight Academy Awards But they’ve also had some amusement park fun. Tanay Hermant Chheda, Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar, Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwalan, Rubiana Ali, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail Sheik and Ayush Mahesh Khedekar made their first-ever trip to Universal Studios on Friday, checking out the rides and movie-making action. And on Monday, the seven youngsters headed to Disneyland, where they rubbed elbows with Disney stars, including Mickey and Minnie Mouse. On Tuesday, the group will return to India, where celebrations are being planned for the movie’s Oscar wins. The children, two of whom were plucked from the slums of Mumbai for their roles, are being paid a monthly stipend from the film’s producers. They also have trust funds set up, which they will reportedly receive after graduating from school.

OMG, how fun! Disneyland is a treat for kids of any age so I’m sure these kids had the time of their lives. It’s a shame that Dev Patel and Freida Pinto didn’t join them … I know they would’ve had a great time, too. After the jump, check out a few candid shots of the kids as they enjoyed their day at Disneyland …

Suri Holmes Cruise Rules The Magic Kingdom

Suri Holmes-Cruise became a princess for a day this week when her parents, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, took her to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida and let her loose upon the park. Little Suri was allowed access to all of the Disney characters who were clamoring over one another to have their photo taken with the little robot. Here are a few pics of the Holmes-Cruises (including Connor Kidman-Cruise) as they enjoyed all the wonders that the Magic Kingdom has to offer:

Being the daughter of one of Hollywood’s most well paid actors certainly has its perks. And toddler Suri Cruise was enjoying the benefits of it during a family trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. The two-year-old, who was dressed as a princess for the occasion, looked to be having a magical time as she was treated to a very personal meet and greet with her heroes Mickey and Minnie Mouse while her doting parents Tom Cruise, 46, and Katie Holmes, 30, looked on. The Cruise family skipped the queues at the theme park and spent time with a number of characters including Cinderella – much to Suri’s delight. The toddler, who has become something of a fashionista despite her tender years, looked adorable in a blue ball gown and bare feet and was all smiles during the trip which was a Valentines Day surprise for her and her mother from film star Tom. Katie opted for a more casual look for the occasion and was sporting a striped top and jeans. Before the trip Cruise admitted that he had some special treats up his sleeve for his 30-year-old wife and would provide “a lot of surprises for her throughout the day.”

Aww, so precious. It really looks like Suri had a great time. I understand the only snafu came when the family rode the It’s A Small World ride and Suri got lost amongst the other animatronic children. Because it was very difficult to find Suri in the midst of all the other adorable little robots, they had to shut down the ride to find the little doll. I believe she was found hiding amongst the Tahitian robots. In any event, it appears that the entire family had a great visit to Disney World … clearly evident from the smiles on all of their faces. See, even robots need to vacation every once-in-a-while.
