Behold the 'Parade of Gold'
Michael Phelps Receives A Hometown Hero’s Welcome

All hail the conquering hero! Michael Phelps was honored with a hometown pride parade in Maryland this weekend that was thrown in his honor. Pink reader Kerstin, who attended elementary thru high school with Phelpsie, was gracious enough to send in a few photos of Phelps from his parade (snapped by her dad) this weekend. Here are Kerstin‘s fun pics and some info about the Parade of Gold:

Thousands lined the streets of Towson, Md., Saturday afternoon to welcome their local Olympic heroes home, led by best-athlete-in-the-universe Michael Phelps. The Parade of Gold down York Road honored Maryland Olympians, Special Olympians and Paralympians. But the star was Towson’s Phelps, the swimming phenomenon and 14-time gold medalist. Mr. Phelps, 23, grew up a stone’s throw away from the parade route in the neighborhood of Rodgers Forge. He trained at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under Coach Bob Bowman and attended Towson High School. Towson boasts itself as partially responsible for his massive 6-foot, 7-inch wing span and ability to consume a whopping 12,000 calories a day while competing, not to mention his unmatched speed and stamina in swimming … Fans who had only seen images of Mr. Phelps on Olympic coverage, SNL, or the cover of Sports Illustrated caught a glimpse of the real thing as he rolled by in an open-top Hummer, shaking a clutched fist of victory. Swimming medalists Katie Hoff and Jessica Long were also spotlighted in individual cars while the remaining Maryland athletes greeted crowds from a flatbed float. Towson pulled out all the stops to make the Parade of Gold spectacular. Included in the parade were Ravens cheerleaders and mascot Poe, the Orioles Bird, marching bands from Milford Mill Academy, Loch Raven, Parkville, Towson and Dulaney High Schools, fire engines, antique cars, cultural and community groups and more … Mr. Phelps’ mother, Debbie Phelps, waved to fans, stepping out of the car occasionally to hug old friends. “His mom was a member of Phi Mu. Once a sister, always a sister,” said Becca Leder, a freshman at Towson University and a pledging member of the Phi Mu sorority. “His mom should come over and be like, ‘These are the girls you want to marry,’” sophomore Jessica Stein said. Both young women wore the black shirts with pink lettering of sisters in training for the sorority … “There is no better location than the birthplace of our national anthem to welcome Michael and all Maryland’s Olympians home,” Mr. O’Malley said.

Awww … you gotta love a hometown welcome like this. I’m sure that every single person in his hometown of Towson, MD is extremely proud that one of their own has reached new heights in Olympic glory. Shoot, I’m happy to take on some of that pride myself … Phelpsie studys and trains at the University of Michigan, which is where I went to graduate school so I can totally understand the feeling of prideful connectedness. Phelps is a good guy and he totally deserves all the love and accolades that he has been receiving since his stunning performance at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China this summer. I have to send out much love and thanks to Kerstin and her father for sharing their photos from this weekend’s Parade of Gold in Maryland.

The secret's out?
Michael Phelps Steps Out With His (New?) Girlfriend Nicole Johnson

Well … it looks like the secret’s out. 14-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps appears to have finally gotten himself (or it has been revealed that he’s had) a girlfriend in Miss California runner-up Nicole Johnson. You may recall that Phelpsie would not confirm to People magazine that he had a girlfriend in his life … but it looks like the cat is out of the bag. Either he suddenly found the time to take on a girlfriend or he’s been keepin’ this lovely lady underwraps for some time. Here is a pic of Phelpsie and Nicole as they made their way thru Logan International Airport in Boston, MA yesterday — note how they appeared to keep a bit of distance between them perhaps in an attempt to throw us off the trail of their lurve:

Sure, they may not look very chummy in this pic but there are other pics where the two clearly look a whole lot closer. After the jump, check out a few of them …

Hurray for outtakes!
More Speedo Hotness With Dr. McSwimmy

Yesterday we got to see the hilarious Grey’s Anatomy spoof that was featured on Jimmy Kimmel‘s Big Night of Stars pre-Emmy Awards special which starred Michael Phelps as Dr. McSwimmy … today we get to see a few outtake and behind the scenes photos from the filming of this Grey’s spoof:

Yeah, basically it’s just an excuse to post pics of Michael Phelps standing around in his tiny little Speedo. And, for the record, I stand by my assertion that Phlepsie was hilarious in this little spoof … how can you not lurve a man who has no problem showing off his hot bod while wearing only a Speedo and not much else (tho, I could do without the black socks and Crocs combo). In case you missed it the first time, click HERE to watch the Dr. McSwimmy Grey’s Anatomy spoof to see Phelpsie in action.

Why wasn't he this funny on 'Saturday Night Live'?
Olympian Michael Phelps Is Dr. McSwimmy

Michael Phelps made a special guest appearance on ABC last night during Jimmy Kimmel‘s Big Night of Stars pre-Emmy Awards special. Phelpsie made a cameo in a Grey’s Anatomy spoof that introduced him as a new character on the show — Dr. McSwimmy. Here are a few screencaps from the spoof:

Not only was this little skit funnier than the entire Emmy Awards show itself (or so I hear) but it was infinitely funnier than any of his skits from his appearance on Saturday Night Live last weekend. After the jump, check out the full video of this Grey’s spoof for yourselves …

Sen. Barack Obama pulls out of 'SNL' cameo
Michael Phelps Prepares For ‘Saturday Night Live’

Tonight is the night that 14-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps will make his comedic acting debut as he hosts the season premiere of Saturday Night Live live from NYC. It was previously reported that Senator Barack Obama would be making a cameo on tonight’s season premiere ep but due to the severity of Hurricane Ike (which is currently pounding the Southern portion of the country) he has decided to postpone his appearance out of respect for those dealing with the storm’s onslaught. A wise choice, I think. But, it’s full steam ahead for Phelpsie to take the hosting reigns for tonight’s show. Here is a screencap from a video that Access Hollywood posted online from Phelpsie‘s SNL rehearsals:

Michael Phelps steps out of his chlorinated comfort zone to host the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, treading the same stage where his comedy idol Chris Farley once got big laughs. The swimmer who won a record-setting eight gold medals at last month’s Olympics has been riding a pop culture wave since Beijing, making the rounds of the TV talk shows, presenting at MTV’s Video Music Awards and being gossiped about in the tabloids. Phelps follows in the athletic footsteps of such jocks as LeBron James, Peyton Manning, Derek Jeter and Michael Jordan, who also hosted NBC’s late-night sketch show. “I was a little nervous coming into this whole thing, but I’ve actually started to get really, really excited,” Phelps said Thursday on a conference call from New York. “I’m definitely looking forward to Saturday. This is a completely new experience for me, but something that is going to be pretty fun.” He hopes to connect by phone with Ashton Kutcher for some comedy tips, having met the actor’s wife, Demi Moore, at the VMAs, where she offered help. Hosting the show’s 34th season opener has made Phelps the envy of his friends. Swimming rival Ryan Lochte may be particularly jealous since the show’s musical guest is Lil’ Wayne, Lochte’s favorite rapper and someone Phelps likes, too. Among the sketches under consideration for the 90-minute show are ones involving his mother, Debbie, the skintight body suit he swims in, and his eight gold medals. “Anything you can imagine, they nailed just about every topic,” Phelps said of the show’s writers. He laughed at a suggestion that he’ll take off his shirt to reveal his rock-hard abs. “If it happens, it happens,” he said. “It’s all in good fun. I’m along for the ride.” Taking the stage alone for the opening monologue worries Phelps more than stepping on the starting block in China did. “I’m more nervous doing this than I was swimming in Beijing,” he said. “But after readthroughs, I started getting into it and started warming up. I felt completely confident today.” That doesn’t mean Phelps should leave his watery world for show biz, though. “There’s no question about him getting it and being funny and knowing what to do,” said Lorne Michaels, the show’s executive producer. “He’s certainly not going to be a professional sketch player, but I think he’ll do just fine. “No matter what happens they can’t take those medals away.”

Click HERE to watch the Access Hollywood video in full. Because Senator Obama was scheduled to make his cameo on the show tonight, NBC reportedly got Tina Fey to agree to appear with him playing the role of Sarah Palin. I understand that she may still make her cameo tonight (which I can’t wait to see … it will be BRILLIANT!). I am really looking forward to tonight’s season premiere ep … I am curious to see if Michael Phelps has got what it takes to pull off hosting duties on SNL. Do y’all think he can do it?

... for now
Michael Phelps Is All Partied Out

14-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps has been, by many accounts, partying his ass off for the past couple of weeks … and last night was no exception. Here are a couple pics of Phelpsie making his way out of a VMAs afterparty last night lookin’ a bit worse for the wear and in no mood to be photographed any longer:

Homeslice has been rollin’ like a big dawg since his record-breaking performance at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China last month … perhaps it’s time to slow your roll, my man. I mean, I get that he’s having fun and enjoying his new found fame but I’d hate to see him get into trubs again by making reckless decisions … I’m just saying. Do any of y’all think that Phelpsie might need to chill out for a bit?

Britney! Britney! Britney!
The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards

Okay, even tho I already devoted an entire post to Britney Spears‘s triumphant night at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, any mention of the show by ALL of the press (including THIS report from Time magazine) seems to devote a good portion of their reporting to Miss Britney Spears. But, there were other people and other things going on at the VMAs yesterday … here are a few pics of some of the folks who walked the red carpet yesterday (it should be noted that Britney did not walk the red carpet, choosing instead to keep her revelation of the night strictly for the show itself):

For the most part, I found the red carpet pretty tame … I mean, there really weren’t that many “hot messes” to speak of. Of course you had your usual poor fashion choices (that red and black dress did not really work on P!nk for me, nor did I like Rihanna‘s outfit choice … Xtina looked hawt!) but that’s to be expected. Personally, I had a hard time focusing while on the red carpet … we were lined up in the blazing SoCal sun hours before the first celeb walked the carpet … it wasn’t that pleasant. I did get to snap some fun pics and meet a few very COOL folks … but I’ll post those pics a bit later on.

As for the show itself, I have not yet been able to watch it in its entirety, properly but I did manage to catch most of it on the huge screens that were plastered all over the VIP green room last night. After the jump, check out some pics from the show itself and take one more look at Xtina Aguilera‘s amazing performance …

Girls! Girls! Girls!
Michael Phelps Continues To Leave His Mark On Las Vegas

Could Michael Phelps be interested in a new profession … in djing? Phelpsie was spotted chillin’ with his peeps at the Palms Hotel and Casino pool last night and managed to jump onto the turntables while DJ Skribble was mixing some tunes in order to play some of his own favorite tracks. Here is a pic of Phelpsie and his new dj buddy Skribble posing together behind the decks:

But when Michael wasn’t flexing his dj skillz he was bizzy with another of his favorite pastimes … lurvin’ up on the scantily clad ladies. After the jump, check out a couple pics of Phelpsie poolside with a whole cavalcade of female admirers …

Boys will be boys
Michael Phelps Has An Affinity For Strippers

Fresh from taping The Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago, IL earlier this week, 14-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps made his way to Las Vegas, NV to enjoy a little playtime. More specifically, Phelpsie made a bee-line for the Playboy Club in order to make some new friends with some of the establishment’s employees … Radar magazine has the scoop:

Radar Staff Writer Neel Shah spent the evening in Las Vegas (more on that later), and was kind enough to send along these fine photos of Olympic hero Michael Phelps “massively skeeving on girls at the Playboy Club” in that city’s Palms Casino. Neel notes that the Olympian was accompanied by an entourage of striped-shirted schmucks, one of whose sole duties appeared to be pointing a flashlight at anyone attempting to photograph the swimmer during his efforts to obtain a gold medal in ass-grabbing. (“It was unreal,” says Neel. “Within moments of entering the club he summoned two girls over… I’ve never seen such an aggressive grip.”)

Well, I guess we now know that Michael Phelps isn’t playing coy when he denies that he has a girlfriend, clearly the lad is enjoying his ability to play the field. It makes sense that he would want to keep his private life private, especially when his private life involves offering butt massages to strippers ;) Please, I cannot hate the boy for doing his thing … I think it’s great that Phelpsie is enjoying the spoils of victory right now … hopefully, tho, his present enjoyment won’t require the need for antibiotics :)

... with 150 US Olympic Athletes
‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ Kicks Off Its 23rd Season

Oprah Winfrey taped the 23rd season premiere of her daytime talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago, IL yesterday. For the momentous event, Oprah invited 150 US Olympic athletes who competed at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China to help kick off this new season of her show:

Thousands of spectators cheered Olympic medalists Michael Phelps, Dara Torres and Kobe Bryant on Wednesday as the city of Chicago got a high-profile boost to its bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Oprah Winfrey was taping the season premiere for “The Oprah Winfrey Show” at a downtown park, and she invited 150 U.S. Olympic athletes to join her. The athletes were introduced under a shower of red, white and blue confetti. Winfrey intends the show to be both a welcome home for athletes who competed in Beijing and also a chance to showcase Chicago as the city bids for the 2016 Games, said Harpo Productions … The 23rd season premiere of Winfrey’s talk show will air Monday. Chicago is a finalist for the 2016 Games along with Tokyo; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Madrid, Spain. The International Olympic Committee will choose the 2016 host next year.

People.com has some scoop on what will transpire in next Monday’s season premiere ep:

Even face-to-face with Oprah Winfrey, Michael Phelps remains mum on the topic of his private life. But in terms of Olympic-sized revelations, Nastasia Liukin admits she gained inspiration from The Secret, while Kobe Bryant confessed to his surprise at finding he has so many fans in China … “It’s good to be back on American soil,” said Phelps, 23, grinning shyly and wearing only one of the eight gold medals he took home for swimming. Asking the most pressing question, “Are you single?,” Winfrey was told by Phelps, “I try to keep my private life private.” Bryant, joined by others on the winning men’s basketball team, said the players made a conscious effort to bring back gold and remedy what had become the sullied reputation of American players. “We made it a personal challenge. It was a priority” to take arrogance out of the game, he told Winfrey. In response to all the attention he received from adoring Chinese fans, Bryant, 30, admitted, “It caught me off guard” … Liukin, 18, cited the inspiration she received from The Secret, a self-help book popularized on Winfrey’s show. Recalling her pre-China prep, “I said, ‘I guess I should read it, Oprah read it,’ ” said the winning athlete. As for Torres – at 41, the winner of three silver medals in Beijing – the swimmer and mother of a 2-year-old said age shouldn’t limit one’s dreams. “All the mothers out there are my role models,” she said.

Oprah always does things in a big way, none of this surprises me at all. I do think it’s brilliant that she is using the fame of her show to help Chicago’s Olympic bid. I would love it if Chi-town won the the 2016 Olympics … if so, I’d make sure to attend some portion of the games, Chicago is so close to Detroit. I don’t make it a habit to watch The Oprah Winfrey Show (like my BFF Sarah does) but I’ll be watching this one. It looks too good to miss.
