The Official Michael Jackson Video Game Gets A Release Date

Back in June we learned that plans were in the works to release a new Michael Jackson video game for the first time since MJ released the video game Moonwalker back in the late 80′s. This time around, the new Michael Jackson video game will be produced for a wide variety of home video game consoles including XBOX 360, Playstation 3 and Wii as well as handheld consoles Nintendo DS and PSP (each with different forms of game play). Here is our first look at what the box art for the game will look like when it gets released in November (perfect for Xmas shopping needs) and some deets about the various incarnations:

Release Date: November 2010
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft
Genres: Music, Dancing, Singing
Mode(s): Single-player, Multiplayer
Platform(s): Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii, Nintendo DS
(new motion technology on the Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, which captures gamers movements.)

XBOX 360 version: The XBOX version will utilize the forthcoming Kinect software, which projects an image of the player onto the screen. Ubisoft’s Tony Key said: “Your goal is to dance like Michael. Do what the guy on the screen is doing and you’re there. It’ll score you based on the quality of your performance.” The XBOX 360 version will use Kinect in the same way that another Ubisoft title, Your Shape, employs the technology, that is by projecting an image of the player in game to get rid of the usual avatars. Furthermore, there will be no need for a microphone, as the one incorporated in Kinect will do just fine, letting Michael Jackson fans dance and sing at the same time without the need of other peripherals.

PS3 version: The PlayStation 3 version will be compatible with Move and will also need a microphone for the vocals, according to Eurogamer.

Wii version: On the Wii, it will have the same game play mechanics as the popular Just Dance, in which players use the Wii Remote with Wii Motion Plus attached and attempt to mimic the on-screen silhouette dancer.

Nintendo DS and PSP versions: The Nintendo DS release will behave like Elite Beat Agents, apparently, with the player using the stylus to tap circles or follow pathways between various points, keeping the rhythm of the song. The game play is suggested as taking the form of a traditional Rhythm-Action title, with the players asked to press the corresponding face button to that which is presented on-screen. As players progress, new venues will be available alongside the new tracks, leading to some of Michael Jackson’s most famous performances. In addition to the Rhythm-Action game play, Michael Jackson: The Experience on PSP will feature a series of mini-games and a quiz mode. Few details are available on how these extras will be offered within the package (whether they’ll be available form the start or unlockable rewards)

I have to be honest … a video game that lets you project a digitized version of yourself INTO the game so that you can see yourself IN the game sounds pretty cool as hell. Hopefully this game will be easier to plan than something like Dance, Dance Revolution! As much as I love interactive games, DDR is impossible for me to master … maybe I’ll have better luck with this new MJ game. David is a huge Michael Jackson fan but he’s only marginally a video game fan (tho, he does love to play the full size arcade version of Michael Jackson‘s Moonwalker when we visit our friends Rob and Tamar at their home) so mebbe I’ll have to get him this game for Xmas. It sounds fun, are any of y’all interested in shellin’ out for a MJ video game like this?

10 previously unreleased tracks are on the way
New Michael Jackson Music Due For Release This November

On Tuesday we got to see a video interview with Rodney Darkchild Jerkins where he talked a bit about a new album of unreleased Michael Jackson music that would be released soon. Today we are learning a bit more about that as-yet-untitled album … even tho we don’t know what the disc will be called or what songs will make the cut, we do know that it is scheduled for release in November of this year:

A new Michael Jackson album featuring previously-unreleased songs is set to be released in November. The as-yet-untitled posthumous LP is set to feature 10 songs from sessions recorded during his peak in the 80s right up to his recording sessions with Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am in 2006 … “There are a couple of songs we recorded for the ‘Bad’ album that we had to cut that are just sensational,” DiLeo said. Last year, a pair of previously-unreleased songs, ‘Another Day’ and ‘A Place With No Name’, surfaced. Rodney Jerkins, who co-produced Jackson’s 2001 album ‘Invincible’, revealed that he was working on the collection. The album will be the first in a 10-album, seven-year deal the Jackson estate agreed with Sony BMG in March 2010.

A November release it timed PERFECTLY for the Xmas shopping season … so it makes total sense. To be honest, a collection of unreleased songs that spans a time period from the late 80′s to the mid 00′s prolly won’t have any sort of cohesion … it sounds like it’ll just be a collection of songs that don’t necessarily go together. I’m not sure that a title is very important … but I am dying to see the tracklist. I’m also very curious to hear these “sensational” songs that didn’t make the cut for the Bad album. I hope we’ll get more concrete news soon … if the album is due out in November, the first single could be released as early as September.

Michael Jackson Inspires Odd New Artwork

Remember last September when we got to see a fun painting, created by artist Dan Lacey, that featured President Barack Obama nude astride a unicorn? Well, it turns out that Lacey has turned his artful eye on another pop culture giant … the late King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson:

While the Obama piece was odd yet fun, these MJ paintings strike me as more odd and controversial. It appears that the image above features MJ in a Christlike pose but instead of wearing a crown of thorns, he is wearing a crown of pills. There are other paintings created by Lacey that feature MJ in other … odd (possibly NSFW) poses. Check ‘em out after the jump …

Fans worldwide mark the anniversary of MJ's death, Joe Jackson sues
Michael Jackson Remembered, 1 Year After His Death

One year ago today the world was stunned by the shocking news that Michael Jackson, the self-proclaimed King of Pop, had suddenly and very surprisingly passed away at the age of 50. In the year since MJ‘s death, the world has shown an outpouring of love and devotion for the late pop star and we all got to see a behind the scenes look at what MJ had planned for his ill-fated This Is It Tour scheduled to take place in London, England last Summer. Today, on the one year anniversary of Michael Jackson‘s death, the world remembers what it lost on June 25, 2009:

Michael Jackson fans around the world lit candles on Friday to mark the death one year ago of the controversial pop star whose posthumous popularity has returned him to a pedestal and made him a billion dollar man. Fans in Hanoi, Vietnam, held a night of performances of Jackson’s songs while 50 Japanese admirers — one for each year of his life — were picked from 10,000 people to spend a night at Tokyo Tower among the singer’s possessions in the Neverland Collection, the only official Michael Jackson exhibition. “The idea may sound a bit odd to Western cultures, but in Japan the tradition of being with the remains and possessions of passed loved ones on the anniversary of their passing is an important ritual,” said Hiroyuki Takamura of the Tokyo Tower. Jackson’s sudden death at age 50 on June 25 last year in Los Angeles sparked an outpouring of grief internationally for the former child star, who was rehearsing for a series of concerts aimed at reviving a career shattered by bizarre events as an adult and acquittal on charges of molesting a 13-year-old boy. One year on, Jackson is again idolized and his debts a burden of the past. Hollywood trade paper Billboard estimated Jackson’s earnings in the past year have hit $1 billion, including album sales generating about $383 million and revenue from the film “This Is It” hitting nearly $400 million. The Official Charts Company, which compiles record sales in Britain, said Jackson sold more records than any other artist in the last 12 months. His sales of 2.77 million albums outstripped Michael Buble’s 2.0 million. Including singles, Jackson’s sales in Britain reached 4.31 million for the year since his death. “Man in the Mirror” topped singles sales, followed by “Billie Jean” … There are no major tributes planned on Friday by the official Michael Jackson estate, which now controls rights to the “Beat it” singer’s music, likeness and other memorabilia. But in the family hometown of Gary, Indiana, matriarch Katherine Jackson will unveil a monument outside the humble house where the legendary Jackson 5 began their singing career half a century ago. A memorial and candlelight vigil will follow, ending with the song “We are the World.” Jackson’s children — Prince Michael, Paris and Blanket — are expected to mark the anniversary privately in Gary. The cemetery where Jackson is buried near Los Angeles will open its gates to all fans on Friday but they will not be allowed into the vast mausoleum containing his body. The singer’s estranged father Joe has helped organize a “Forever Michael” tribute at a Beverly Hills hotel on June 26 and Katherine Jackson, 80, has given the fund-raising dinner her blessing with her self-published book of personal family photographs — “Never Can Say Good-bye” — to be sold there.

Fans started showing up at MJ‘s grave site at Forest Lawn Cemetery early yesterday afternoon to begin their vigil to mark the anniversary of his death today:

And in fine Joseph Jackson style, papa Joe is using today for his own attention-grabbing ends by officially filing a wrongful death suit against Dr. Conrad MurrayMJ‘s personal physician in charge of his well-being at the time of this death last year and has since been criminally charged with involuntary manslaughter — to ensure that he is being talked about today:

TMZ has obtained Joe Jackson’s wrongful death lawsuit against Dr. Conrad Murray that Joe’s lawyer, Brian Oxman, will file today — Joe asks for unspecified damages in connection with the death of Michael Jackson. And, the lawsuit lists Katherine Jackson and Michael’s three kids as “nominal” plaintiffs. The lawsuit does not name AEG, though Oxman has alleged the company that produced “This Is It” was at least partly responsible for Jackson’s death. Oxman does not explain what he means when he lists Katherine and MJs kids as “nominal” plaintiffs. He clearly does not have authority to sue on behalf of the children. According to the suit, “Mr. Jackson believes there are other parties responsible for Michael Jackson’s death but has not yet gathered sufficient information regarding their potential liability or responsibility.” The suit says the complaint will be amended when sufficient info is gathered. TMZ obtained a copy of the complaint, which will be filed in federal court this morning. In the complaint, Joe alleges Dr. Murray withheld vital information from the doctors and EMTs who were trying to save Jackson’s life — information that he had administered Propofol. The complaint — much like the intent to sue document TMZ first broke — states that Murray tried to “clean-up the scene” before EMTs arrived. Something new … Murray told cops he was monitoring Michael when he gave him Propofol with a pulse oximeter, which measures the level of oxygen in a patient’s blood. But according to the suit, when police searched the scene, they found the oximeter “in the closet in the next room.” The complaint alleges Dr. Murray felt he could change his story — from Jackson had no drug problem, to Jackson was addicted to Propofol — because he kept no medical records, as required by California law. The complaint alleges Joe Jackson has suffered more than $75,000 in damages, the minimum amount required to get jurisdiction in federal court. The case was filed in federal — not California court — because Dr. Murray’s residence is outside the state. The suit claims Dr. Murray administered a “polypharmacy” of drugs to Jackson for months before his death.

Yes, folks, there are many ways that people are marking the anniversary of MJ‘s death … these are just a few examples. Despite the fact that I am not a huge MJ fan, I plan to play some of my fave Michael Jackson tunes at some point today in honor of his memory. I just cannot believe it’s been a year already.

How will YOU mark the 1st anniversary of Michael Jackson's death?
Madam Tussaud’s NYC Prepares To Pay Tribute To Michael Jackson

Yesterday we saw a photo from the prep work going on at the Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum in Washington DC for the exhibit that will pay tribute to the late Michael Jackson on the anniversary of his death tomorrow and today we get to see photos from the Madam Tussaud’s exhibit in NYC that will pay homage to the late King of Pop as well:

We learned yesterday that all nine Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museums around the world will pay tribute to MJ so if there is a museum near you, you can make your way there tomorrow to pay your respects. Additionally, a new line of Michael Jackson candles have become available so that you can remember MJ and then burn his head in the privacy of your own home:

TMZ is reporting that the first fans have started showing up at Forest Lawn Cemetery to be near MJ‘s final resting place for tomorrow’s anniversary. It’s still hard to believe it’s been a year since Michael Jackson died. How will YOU be marking the first anniversary of MJ‘s death tomorrow?

Unreleased Photos Of Michael Jackson For Sale

With the anniversary of Michael Jackson‘s death quickly approaching (just 2 days away) there is a lot of MJ talk going around … including news of an upcoming auction scheduled for later this year where unreleased photos of MJ shot by French photographer Arno Bani will go on the auction block. The photos were originally snapped to promote MJ‘s album Invincible but were apparently never released … and now they are up for sale:

Early December 2010, Pierre Bergé & Associés will organize an exceptional auction of Michael Jackson’s unpublished portraits. These photographs of the pop king are the result of an extraordinary adventure lived by a young French photographer, Arno Bani, to whom the star exceptionally entrusted his image. Arno Bani, entirely free in the production of this session, created 4 different artistic scénarii and chose the greatest fashion professionals to work with him: Yves Saint Laurent, François Lesage, Topolino, Seb Bascle, Frédérique Lorca and Maïda, etc. During this sale, 12 unique and never disclosed portraits, numbered 1 of 1, as well as the contact boards of this photography session, among which those selected by Michael Jackson himself, will be presented for auction. This auction, organized by Pierre Bergé & Associés, will undoubtedly give rise to considerable interest among the collectors but also the fans of the pop star. The catalog of this sale will be available from October in co-edition with Editions du Chêne – Hachette Group, and distributed internationally. Furthermore, a luxury box including a photograph from this session will be proposed in limited edition.

I mean … this photo, which is among the photos up for sale, is kinda cool but not really all that inventive. It is kinda neat to see MJ in a bit of a different light but I can’t say that I see the appeal of spending gads of money to own these original photographs. That being said, I’ve been known to spend far too much money on collectibles that I adore and others might have no interest in … so far be it for me to besmirch someone else’s desire to own exclusive one-of-a-kind collectibles. I doubt any of y’all will be participating in the auction to own these photos but what is your opinion of this photo over all?

Madam Tussaud’s Washington DC Prepares To Pay Tribute To Michael Jackson

We are just a couple days away from the 1 year anniversary of the death of Michael Jackson and while MJ‘s family are lookin’ to get back in the spotlight (by any means necessary), others are preparing to pay tribute to the late King of Pop in their own way. Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum in Washington DC is but one of the many locations that will be paying tribute to MJ on the anniversary of his death. Here is a photo of the MJ wax statue in DC gettin’ primped for the exhibit:

In preparation for a spectacular worldwide tribute at each of its sibling attractions, just two days before the one-year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s tragic death, Madame Tussauds Washington D.C. studio artists will position Jackson’s wax figure in the attraction’s lobby, touch up the figure’s make-up, style its hair and prepare its outfit, for a special Michael Jackson Tribute Exhibit on Wednesday, June 23 from 11 a.m. – Noon at 1001 F Street, NW (10th & F Streets NW), Washington D.C. Madame Tussauds D.C. joins all nine Madame Tussauds attractions worldwide – from Shanghai to New York – in paying tribute to Jackson, whose untimely passing June 25 of last year shocked the world. Each attraction will create its own tribute exhibit. Madame Tussauds D.C.’s exhibit will be free to the public, so that Washingtonians and visiting passersby alike will have a chance to be close to the “King of Pop” once again. During the tribute fans will be able to pay their respects, take photos with his wax likeness and lay flowers at his feet. Jackson was an active and enthusiastic participant in the creation of his wax figure, which features the “King of Pop” singing with microphone in-hand, wearing an all-black outfit reminiscent of the one he is seen wearing on his Bad album cover. The tribute exhibit will be on display until July 23. With more than 750 million album sales, Jackson is one of the most revered artists in the world. His iconic music inspired millions of people and multiple generations of artists and performers.

The tributes to MJ‘s memory will run the gamut from the classy to the tacky, from the very public to the very private. It’s kinda crazy to think that a year has passed already since Michael suddenly and sadly passed away. Even tho I’m not the biggest MJ fan, I can still appreciate his impact on the world of pop culture. He is still missed … and I hope that people will remember to be as respectful as possible of his memory as we all mourn, once again, the loss of a legend.

"It has been a daily battle to cope with our huge loss."
Katherine Jackson Speaks, Her First Interview Since Michael Jackson’s Death

Katherine Jackson, matriarch of the famed Jackson family, is speaking publicly for the first time — since the sudden death of her son Michael Jackson shocked the world just about a year ago on June 25 — in a new interview with the British tabloid newspaper The Daily Mirror. It should be clarified that Katherine‘s interview is meant the promote a new book that she has published titled Never Can Say Goodbye which is an intimate look at MJ‘s life in photos culled together by Katherine herself. Here are a few excerpts from Katherine‘s new interview with The Daily Mirror:

The world remembers its biggest superstar… and three children mourn the father they adored. Nearly one year on from the death of Michael Jackson, his mother Katherine talks today for the first time about bringing up his daughter and two sons – and how the family still struggle with their private grief. His daughter Paris, 12, has turned her bedroom into a shrine to her “Daddy”, where she is surrounded by his photographs. And his boys Prince, 13, and eightyear-old Blanket bravely talk about wanting to make him proud – and then lapse into silent moments, when they are missing him. All three spend hours listening to their father’s hits. Katherine says: “They don’t have any friends. They don’t go to school, they have private lessons at home – but that will change in September, when they are due to enrol at private college. But they have their cousins and aunts and uncles around them constantly, and that’s helped them immensely. “To them, it’s normal, it’s the life they have known. They have a certain time to go to bed, then they get up and get dressed for lessons. They practise karate and swim, which they love. It is 80-year-old Katherine’s first interview since her son died of suspected cardiac arrest at his Beverly Hills home on June 25 last year. “Each one of them is like Michael in a certain way,” she says. “It has been a daily battle to cope with our huge loss” … It is his daughter, she reveals, who is showing real musical talent – and who expresses her sadness in the most poignant way. “I wanted to hang pictures of flowers or ballerinas in Paris’s room, the sort of things I expected a girl would like,” Katherine says. “But she went into a closet and she brought out seven or eight pictures of Michael, and she told me, ‘No, I want daddy hanging in my room’. So she goes to bed looking at him and wakes up looking at him. She said, ‘I always want to be able to see him’. Paris has that lovely way, just like him, and I see his talent in her. Whatever she does, she is very good at it. She’s a good artist, she plays the piano and she wants to be an actress. Prince is serious about a lot of things. He wants to be a camera-man or produce movies. “He is dedicated to that, like Michael was. And Blanket is very playful, like Michael was” … recently Katherine’s husband Joe – accused of being a brutal father – claimed that she was to blame for Michael’s death, because she refused to tell him to change his lifestyle. Michael would have listened to her if she had intervened, Joe complained, because he was a mummy’s boy. Katherine always kept her own counsel, but she has compiled a book of family pictures and anecdotes that, she says, will tell the truth about Michael and, hopefully, silence the malicious gossip.

“Michael was so misunderstood,” she says. “I treasure my memories of him and wanted to share them with his fans in my book. I remember when he brought gifts for me – a watch, a necklace and a ring. I’ll never forget how he smiled when I opened each one. He was so generous. I want the world to know that real Michael Jackson – a loving person. “Many doubt that, because of the child molestation accusation falsely laid on him, but in truth it was just greedy people after money. The first child, Jordan Chandler, whose father accused Michael, ended up saying he regretted not getting a chance to say sorry to Michael. Then the father committed suicide – I think his conscience was bothering him.” One year on, with Michael’s doctor Conrad Murray facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, Katherine also says she has never accepted that her son died of natural causes. “He was too young for that. I heard from people that he was taking prescription drugs but I never saw my son in any way drugged… he was always himself. If I could see him again, I would want to know one thing, ‘Who did this to you?’” … Now, they are preparing to gather again – this time sombrely at Michael’s grave, in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Los Angeles, for his own poignant anniversary. It has been, Katherine says, a year of such sorrow, demanding extraordinary strength from the family … Katherine says: “I hope that the next year will be better for us all. Michael’s death brought us closer and I want us to be even closer still. I know Michael would have wanted that, too.”

While it is very interesting to hear from mama Katherine herself, this interview (which can be read in full HERE) doesn’t really shed that much light on any new information. She did reveal that the kids will be going to school for the first time ever this September, I sincerely hope it is a smooth transition for each of them. In case you’re interested, Katherine‘s book Never Can Say Goodbye can be ordered from THIS official Jackson website.

So … what do y’all think of this new interview? Do any of y’all find it interesting or insightful?

Paying tribute to Michael Jackson's 50 Top Hits
Michael Jackson Does ‘Billboard’ Magazine

Almost one year after his untimely death, Billboard magazine is featuring Michael Jackson on the cover of their new issue. The magazine is paying homage to MJ‘s 50 Top Hits and reveals his most successful single according to the Billboard charts … and you may be very surprised to find out which of his many songs is his most successful (it ain’t Billie Jean or Thriller). Here is MJ‘s Billboard cover and some deets from the coverstory:

In the days, weeks and months following his death on June 25, 2009, from drug-related cardiac arrest, a popular reclaiming of Jackson as a beloved, once-in-a-lifetime musical genius took hold. While cable-news pundits endlessly pored over the tawdry circumstances of his demise, millions of fans new and old simply shrugged their shoulders and happily popped in their “Thriller” CDs. In July, Jackson regained his spot at the top of the Billboard sales charts, moving 422,000 units in the week after his death alone–to date, the Jackson catalog has sold 9 million copies in the year since he passed, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Spontaneously, kids from Bed-Stuy to Beijing were seen sporting bootleg “Thriller” T-shirts and blaring “Billie Jean” as if it were 1983 and Reagan was in the White House. In the fall, the film of Jackson’s rehearsals for the mocked This Is It tour became the highest-grossing concert movie of all time, earning $72 million at the U.S. box office, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. (The soundtrack to “This Is It,” Sony Music’s only release of new Jackson material since his death, has sold 1.6 million copies.) In March, the Jackson estate, led by co-executors John Branca and John McClain, signed a 10-album, $250 million deal with Sony that will include the release of a collection of previously unreleased tracks, set for November, as well as repackages of Jackson’s 1979 solo breakthrough, “Off the Wall,” and his 1987 album, “Bad.” One month later, Cirque du Soleil, which had created the Beatles’ show “Love” to great acclaim, announced it would produce both a touring and permanent show based on Jackson’s music.

The coverstory article can be read in full HERE … but just to spoil a bit, MJ‘s most successful Billboard hit was the song Say, Say, Say — his duet with Paul McCartney. Click HERE to see the full ranking list of MJ‘s 50 Top Hits. It’s kinda crazy to think that we are coming up on the one year anniversary of MJ‘s death … and yet, he continues to make headlines. Michael Jackson, it would seem, is destined to live on forever in much the same way that Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley do. He might be even bigger … after all, there is still that treasure trove of unreleased Michael Jackson music that has yet to be released. Who knows, in a few years Billboard may have to amend this list of 50 Top Hits with the addition of a few new songs.
