It has been all about the Grammy’s over here, but over in our European counterparts there has been another big awards show, The BAFTAS, which stands for The British Film and Television Arts Awards. These trophies were also handed out yesterday, and are a good predictor for which stars could take home the coveted Oscar trophies in just a couple of weeks. The big standout from the U.K. awards was clearly, The Artist, which had a whopping 12 nominations. We have come to expect this from the silent black-and-white film…. but will the Academy agree with all the hype? Last night they received Best Film, took home awards for best director, screenplay, cinematography, music and costume design. Leading man, Jean Dujardin, also nabbed the award for Leading Actor. Do you think this is what will happen come Oscar night?

Oh how exciting!!! I love Mary Poppins, always have! It first came out in 1964 and its been on Broadway and now its coming back, well, a version of it anyway. Disney is bringing Mary back for a new film about how Walt Disney got the rights to the book in the first place. The film is called Saving Mr. Banks and is rumored to have some awesome actors starring in it including the incredible, Meryl Streep, and Tom Hanks. Read on for more of the details…

We reported on the award winners already, and now for the fashion awards. I have to admit, I watch the red carpet more scrupulously sometimes than the presentations (is that bad?) Last night I was pretty impressed with the couture, there was a lot of color and also some stunning black numbers. Like always, there was some standouts for me. Read on for LOTS of glamor pics.

The Oscar nominations were announced last week, and the film creating all the buzz is The Artist, which nabbed 10 nominations. For the inaugural Best Picture award this year, there are 9 films competing — The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse. Today we learned of a lesser known, Australian award ceremony, that named The Artist the big winner…in the lead up to the Oscars all the various award ceremonies are important to think about, but of course don’t indicate what will happen come Oscar. Just after winning her third Golden Globe for the TV series Homeland Claire Danes has secured an even more honorable award – 2012 Woman of the Year by the Hasty Pudding Theatricals of Harvard University.

Meryl Streep portrays former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the biopic The Iron Lady and this week she graces the cover of the new issue of Newsweek magazine in costume as dear old Maggie. The real Margaret Thatcher has graced Newsweek magazine in the past but this week, it’s Meryl‘s turn at the cover. Check it out below.

Academy Award winning actress Meryl Streep is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of Vogue magazine. As you should be WELL aware, Meryl stars as Margaret Thatcher in the biopic film The Iron Lady which will, very likely, score her at least another Academy Award nomination and possibly another Oscar. For this Vogue feature, tho, the focus is not necessarily on the likelihood of her Oscar success … the feature is meant to highlight Meryl‘s ability to transform herself completely for her film roles. It looks like legendary actress Meryl Streep is ready to collect a few new award trophies for acting because today we get our first look at her in full make-up as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming biopic The Iron Lady based on the famed politician’s life. As you recall, in recent years Streep previously transformed herself into an Anna Wintour-like character for The Devil Wears Prada and almost completely into Julia Child for the film Julie & Julia. Now, Meryl will become the Iron Lady herself.

Earlier today we learned that director Kathryn Bigelow made Oscar history last night at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards where she took home the trophies for Best Director (the first woman to do so) and Best Picture (the biggest award of the awards). But, there were other folks at the Oscars last night … some of them won Oscars of the their own, many of them didn’t … but that’s the name of the game. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals:

As you can see, Gabourey Sidibe wore a lovely blue dress … in fact, all of the women from Precious who appeared at the Academy Awards last night wore blue dresses because it was the color that actress Hattie McDaniel (the first African-American woman to win an Oscar) wore when she collected her Best Supporting Actress award for Gone with the Wind in 1939. Meryl Streep wore a lovely white dress … which was designed by Project Runway contestant Chris March (who is usually known for his outlandish costume designs — usually worn by drag queens — rather than his stylish fashion designs). The red carpet, as usual, had its hits and misses but the folks presented here looked mighty fine, I thought.

Last night the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards were handed out in rainy SoCal at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA … and, I gotta say, the show did a pretty fantastic job with spreading the wealth to many deserved winners. No one movie or TV show ran away with all the awards … Dexter was the only TV series to win 2 awards while Avatar, Crazy Heart and Up were the only movies to win 2 awards as well (with the former film taking home the biggest movie awards of the night). Here are a few pics from the rainy red carpet arrivals last night:

I am *amazed* that the organizers of the Golden Globe Awards this year did not plan for the rain. We knew all week long that it was going to rain yesterday … hell, it even started raining early enough in the day to give folks the head’s up that they might want to plan for a wet red carpet and yet … there was no planning involved. Everyone on the red carpet, celebs and reporters alike, were just meandering around like wet lost sheep. How dreadful. Many of the celebs had to scramble to find umbrellas and people to hold their umbrella’s for them … only Mariah Carey came prepared with her very own personal valet/husband Nick Cannon who is always at the ready to hold her umbrella for her whenever she needs him. Such a good boy.

But, the show did go off without a hitch. Ricky Gervais, IMHO, wasn’t that great of a host but he did a passable job I thought. And as I mentioned earlier, I was very pleased with many of winners last night — save for just a few winners I did NOT agree with at all.
