Bane Surfaces
Watch: ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Rises’ Begins Filming In Pittsburgh, PA

At the start of this month we saw video footage of Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway filming scenes for the upcoming sequel film Batman: The Dark Knight Rieses in the UK and a few weeks later, we saw the first signs of life on the Pittsburgh, PA set of the film. This weekend, filming was in FULL swing on the streets of Pittsburgh as many of main Batman actors surfaced on set for duty. Only Tom Hardy, in character as Bane, was dressed in any significant costume … but Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Gary Oldman (Commissioner Gordon) and Marion Cotillard (Miranda Tate) were among the big names on set yesterday.

WTF?!
Marion Cotillard & Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Roles In ‘The Dark Knight’ Rises Have Been Revealed

Remember how excited we were to learn that both Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had been reportedly cast in the upcoming Batman sequel film The Dark Knight Rises? Remember how rumors started to swirl that claimed that Cotillard might play Talia al Ghul and Gordon-Levitt might play Black Mask (or some other equally cool, underground Batman villain)? Yeah, well it turns out that those rumors were COMPLETELY wrong … because according to a new press release about the film, Cotillard will play a boring executive and Gordon-Levitt will play an equally boring police officer. Yawn!

Who Will She Play?
Marion Cotillard Joins The Cast Of ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Rises’

Last August we first heard the rumor that Academy Award-winning French actress Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose, Inception) would be joining the cast of the new Christopher Nolan-directed Batman film. Today we learn that, yes, Cotillard has joined the cast of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. Last Summer, it was rumored that Marion might play either Talia al Ghul or Selina Kyle/Catwoman but we learned last month that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle … so … does that mean Marion will play Talia?

Rumor has it she may play Catwoman or Talia al Ghul
Will Marion Cotillard Appear In The Next ‘Batman’ Film?

Director Christopher Nolan will not go into filming production of the next Batman film until next year and will not hit movie theaters until 2012 but rumors about the film’s casting are starting to ramp up in frequency. In recent weeks, since the release of Nolan‘s film Inception, there has been talk that the films actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy are vying for roles in the next Batman film (I’m totally on board with JGL playing The Riddler) but today we learn of another rumor that claims that Academy Award-winning actress Marion Cotillard (who also starred in Nolan‘s Inception) has been offered her choice of roles for the new Batman. According to this new rumor, she can either play Catwoman or Talia al Ghul. Here is a fanmade poster that imagines what Marion might look like in the role of Catwoman and the deets of this interesting new casting rumor:

When it comes to Christopher Nolan’s Batman 3 movie project, nearly every actor associated with his 2010 blockbuster Inception has been linked with the next Batman sequel. Enter the latest rumor to hit … ComicBookMovie.com reports that Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard has been offered her choice of either Catwoman or Talia al Ghul in the yet-to-be-titled Batman 3 project. ComicBookMovie.com’s source allegedly is a former Warner Bros. intern with some inside knowledge. The report says the source:

“… was apparently told today by someone they met during that time that the actress has been approached by the studio to play either Selina Kyle or Talia al Ghul. They went on to tell me that Cotillard has had to turn down the offer as of now as she’s unsure whether the planned shooting start date of the next Batman movie will clash with other projects she’s either interested in or already committed to, despite the fact that she’s reportedly keen to re-team team with Christopher Nolan.”

Now before you get your lycra in a bunch, remember this: The “former intern” who is the source for this report could’ve just been slinging coffee between sound stages. Who knows if she really has privy to such inside information on an important project? But it’s always fun to speculate and I’m sure there are more than a few folks who wouldn’t mind seeing Marion Cotillard wear the shapely outfits required for either role.

Ha! As much as I love this rumor, I don’t really believe it. Even if Marion ends up appearing in the next Batman film, I doubt the source quoted in this report would ever have any such knowledge about her casting. That being said … I do think Marion Cotillard would be fantastic in either role. Everyone knows who Selena Kyle/Catwoman is but the role of Talia ah Ghul is a character not known by very many people. She is the daughter of the villain Ra’s al Ghul (who was featured in Batman Begins) and in the comic book series, she is the mother of Bruce Wayne‘s son Damien Wayne who grows up to be the 5th Robin. Just like Heath Ledger did with the role of The Joker, I feel that Marion could turn either of these two roles into an Academy Award. I’m not holding my breath, to be honest … everyone from Angelina Jolie to Scarlett Johansson has been rumored to play Catwoman. But if I had my pick, I’d deffo go with Marion Cotillard.

Yes We Cannes
Celebs Attend The Chopard 150th Anniversary Party In Cannes

As you may know by now, the 2010 Cannes International Film Festival is in fully swing … which means the parties are also well underway. Chopard, makers of fine jewelry and watches, threw a lavish 150th anniversary party this week and managed to attract the likes of Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard and even Lindsay Lohan. Here are a few photos from the event’s red carpet arrivals:

This party must’ve been really important because L. Lo is risking going to jail just so she can be in Cannes, France to attend. I mean, I like a good party too but damn girl, you are nuts to risk your freedom just to get your party on with your friends. In any event, this Chopard event was THE party to be at so I hope it was worth all the trubs. Looks like fun, no?

'American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity'
The 2010 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala

Last night celebs and fashionistas made their way to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, NY to attend the annual Metropolitan Museum Of Art’s Costume Institute Ball which was themed American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity. This gala event is the opportunity for these famous folks to turn it out on the red carpet and show off their fanciest, most stylist looks. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals last night and some deets from the event itself:

It could have gone any way last night, considering the theme of the Costume Institute exhibition: “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity.” There could have been neo-jazz babies, flappers, debutantes, feminists, disco queens, Hollywood sirens, Nouvelle Society matrons and Playboy bunnies. And that’s just a few archetypes off the top of a stack. But most of the women attending the gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among the 725 guests, dressed elegantly, more so than in recent years, and they did their best to heed Anna Wintour’s e-mail messages to be on time. At 6:30 p.m., Ms. Wintour, the editor in chief of Vogue, was waiting at the top of the red-carpeted grand staircase, a tiny figure in a gold Chanel dress and jacket. If the gala’s other leaders, Oprah Winfrey and Patrick Robinson, the executive vice president of design for Gap, had ascended the front steps, they still had a climb before they reached Ms. Wintour and the receiving line. Asked if she felt any pressure to wear clothes by American designers, Ms. Wintour smiled and said, “Well, if you see the exhibition, they’re all wearing French clothes.” Ms. Winfrey wore a design of Oscar de la Renta, who had invited Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Barbara Walters, among others, to sit at his table. In recent years, the themes of the Costume Institute exhibits have included “Anglomania,” superheroes and models. That at least provided some direction for how to dress for the party, where this year the top table price was $250,000 and Lady Gaga sang after the dinner. But this year’s exhibition, organized by the curator Andrew Bolton, looked at styles between 1890 and the 1940s, relying on exceptional pieces from the Brooklyn Museum’s collection like Worth gowns, gray walking suits and bicycling outfits. It’s a serene view of American style, set against murals, and it was almost shocking to see how tiny the figures were, with tiny waists and tiny feet. Naturally, everyone had her own idea of what defined American style. “I think it’s confidence,” said Vera Wang, in a long white dress, as she talked to members of the Newhouse family and then Wendy Murdoch, who wore a fitted green silk dress with a long black train. Its designer, Prabal Gurung, was new to her. She said that Ms. Wintour had recommended him. A few feet away, and trying to avoid the train of Mrs. Murdoch’s dress, were Nicole Richie, in a silvery Marc Jacobs dress, and Margherita Missoni, in a long black dress that sort of left her bare on the sides. “It’s my idea of grunge,” Ms. Missoni said. “I want to bring back the ’90s.” Ms. Ritchie said she wanted to dress up more these days. “I actually wear long dresses a lot,” she said. Across the Petrie Sculpture Court, where cocktails were held, Lauren Santo Domingo was channeling the ’90s as well. “Tom Ford,” she said, mentioning a designer whose name seemed to be on a number of people’s lips. Ms. Santo Domingo’s long beige beaded dress was actually a Proenza Schouler. She was standing with Chloë Sevigny, who had on a bright turquoise Proenza dress with a short belled skirt. “I couldn’t pull off your dress,” Ms. Sevigny said to Ms. Santo Domingo, “and you couldn’t pull off mine.” They seemed agreed about that. Christopher Bailey, the Burberry designer, had his idea about American style: “It’s easy, functional, comfortable with an earthy sexiness. I still think of Lauren Hutton as the epitome of that style.” Franca Sozzani, the editor of Italian Vogue, had on a beige silk satin Valentino dress (“From way, way back,” she said, waving her hand), and she stood surveying the jam-packed, train-tripping room with Donatella Versace. “To me, American fashion is Charlie James,” Ms. Sozzani said. Ah, Charlie. Someone was summoning him, too. Dr. Lisa Airan, the Manhattan dermatologist, had wanted to wear a real James dress to the party, but her friend, the designer Gilles Mendel, had told her that wasn’t such a great idea. So she went to the Met library, did some research, and asked Mr. Mendel to make her dress in the James spirit.

Honestly, I’m not really impressed with anything that I saw on the red carpet last night. Sure, there were a lot of pretty dresses but nothing really stood out. In previous years, there were quite a few interesting and over-the-top looks that were real attention getters (remember Madonna‘s Louis Vuitton bunny ears last year?) but this year … nada. After the jump, check out a few more photos from the red carpet arrivals last night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala to see if anything jumps out and grabs your eye …

The awards season gets underway
Celebs Shine At The 2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival

Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals at the 2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival Gala which took place at the Palm Springs Convention Center in Palm Springs, CA last night. While we know, for sure, that Mariah Carey was DRUNK off her ass when she appeared on stage at the awards ceremony to collect her award for Breakthrough Actress last night, we cannot be sure she was wasted while on the red carpet … but that would be a good guess. Other attendees included Academy Award-winning actress Marion Cotillard, relative newcomer Jeremy Renner (from The Hurt Locker) and the always amazing Shohreh Aghdashloo:

Awards season got off to a roaring start Tuesday night — not in Hollywood, but a few hours away at the Palm Springs International Film Festival awards gala. Heavy hitters including Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Mariah Carey, Marion Cotillard, Quentin Tarantino and Jason Reitman were honored in the first stop on the road to the Academy Awards. “I’m trying really hard not to cry,” Precious director Lee Daniels said on the red carpet. “How do you make a movie for $2 and end up here? It’s out-of-body right now.” The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner said he’s “dumbfounded” by the awards attention his film is receiving. “I’m still that guy who eats Top Ramen by candlelight — just in better clothes,” he said. And if a fortune teller could have predicted this level of success a year ago, Renner said, he would have told them: “You’re out of your mind!” Up in the Air star Anna Kendrick was equally overwhelmed. “The fact that anybody would want my autograph is amazing,” she said. Ladies swoon over Kendrick’s co-star George Clooney, and Kendrick admits to “building him up so much in your head,” but said “it takes two seconds for him to convince you he’s not someone to be afraid of” … Carey, meanwhile, is still shocked she nabbed a role in Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire. “I read the book Push a long time ago. I was crying for two days because I read the book twice. Never did I think there was a part in (the movie) for me.” Carey urged people to see the film: “Thank God, finally somebody is showing the truth. It’s a tough life for some people,” she said, referencing the film’s main character, a pregnant, poor, illiterate teen. Nine director Rob Marshall had nothing but praise for Cotillard, who stars as film director Guido Contini’s wife. “She’s magic to work with. She’s otherworldly. She’ll have a career forever because she is also a character actor,” he said. “She is that special, and she’s worked very, very hard on her English.” Diablo Cody, who won a best-screenplay Oscar in 2008 for Juno, said she’s happy to be a spectator this awards season: “I always say I’m like Scott Hamilton commenting on the Olympics. It’s a lot less nerve-wracking!” She said she’s proud of Reitman, who directed Juno and is winning raves this season for Up in the Air. “He’s been blowing up as long as I’ve known him,” Cody said. Awards season veteran Morgan Freeman said he’s not excited by awards season anymore. “The most exciting thing about this is meeting old friends. I’m still starstruck!” Entertainment Tonight’s Mary Hart hosted the gala, which kicks off the film festival that will run through Jan. 17.

And so … the awards season is underway. I suspect we’ll be seeing and hearing about this crop of actors as more awards shows/ceremonies take place. I hope Jeremy Renner continues to be honored for his work, he was fantastic in The Hurt Locker. We shall see how the rest of the awards season goes.

Something to sing about
‘Nine’ Premieres In NYC

The big musical movie that everyone is talking about this holiday season Nine held it’s NYC premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre in Manhattan … and managed to bring out all the stars. Altho Madonna is not at all involved with the film in any way, she managed to steal some of the spotlight from the film’s principal cast as she walked the red carpet with her eldest daughter Lourdes Maria as her guest. Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals of the NYC premiere of Nine:

Madonna turned the New York premiere of Nine into a family affair last night as she arrived on the red carpet with daughter Lourdes. The film may have been set in the Sixties, but Madonna was clearly reprising her own Eighties look as she turned up in a figure-hugging outfit. With her incredibly youthful face and Like A Prayer outfit, comprising lace Dolce & Gabbana bustier dress, long gloves and silver crucifix, the 51-year-old didn’t look much older than she did during the 1989 video. Her 13-year-old daughter was also going for the Eighties look in a D&G fringed skirt, biker gloves, leather jacket, Doc Martens boots and several beaded necklaces … Last night’s screening saw the biggest showing of the film’s cast with Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Fergie and Kate Hudson all stepping out in their finest couture for the glittering night. The movie’s leading man Daniel Day Lewis was also in attendance, but the only female castmember missing was Italian screen legend Sophia Loren. The cast stepped out just hours after they heard the film had received five nominations at the Golden Globes. Despite a mixed response from critics, Nine is up for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Original Song, and three acting nods for Day-Lewis, Cruz and Cotillard. Day-Lewis plays director Guido Contini, who is suffering a mid-life crisis. Arriving on the red carpet last night, Kidman shunned her favourite neutral colours for a girlie black prom dress. Appearing slightly too tight for the Australian actress around the bust area, the 42-year-old’s dress gave her a cleavage a boost. She was joined by 35-year-old Cruz – who dated Kidman’s ex Tom Cruise soon after their marriage split – who went for old school Hollywood glamour in her red hot satin asymmetrical gown. Excited Cruz, who was earlier nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for her portrayal of Guido’s mistress Carla, said: ‘I am so honoured to be nominated for Nine. I had an incredible time working on the film with such an amazing director, Rob Marshall, and with this extraordinary cast.’ Her co-star Hudson, 30, went for a more unusual gown – a embellished monochrome jersey dress with a long train … Hudson’s night on the red carpet come as widespread reports claimed she had split from baseball player Alex Rodriguez after a six-month romance. Sources close to the high-profile couple said they split a week ago after their return from England, where A-Rod had attended the London premiere of Nine with Hudson … Other stars in attendance last night included Kidman’s actress friend Naomi Watts, who looked pretty in a pink shift dress, millionaire twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Tobey Maguire and his wife Jennifer Meyer. The film follows Guido attempting to balance the relationships of the various women in his life including his wife (Cotillard), mistress (Cruz), muse (Kidman), his confidante (Dench), an American fashion journalist (Hudson), his glamorous courtesan (Fergie) and his mother (Loren). The screenplay – an adaptation of a 1982 Broadway stage hit – was written by the late Anthony Minghella.

I’ve not read any reviews for Nine and, to be honest, I’m not at all familiar with the story … but there is a lot of buzz going on about this film and it’s made me curious. Nine was directed by Rob Marshall who directed the Academy Award-winning musical film Chicago and the cast looks fantastic … I’m sold. Are any of y’all excited to see this film?

Well, Westwood technically but you know what I mean
‘Public Enemies’ Premieres In Hollywood

Christian Bale, Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard and others were on hand for the Hollywood premiere of their new film Public Enemies which took place during the LA Film Festival in Westwood, CA last night. Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals and some deets on last night’s event:

Both began their careers in the mid-’80s with instant classics (“Empire of the Sun,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street”), matured as actors with critically acclaimed roles in the ’90s (“Ed Wood,” “American Psycho”) and broke through with iconic characters in recent years (the “Pirates” and “Batman” films). Both possess the rare quality of making women want them and men want to be like them — and the even rarer skill of being indie-minded actors who lose no credibility when they delve into blockbuster territory. And on Tuesday evening, the remarkably similar career trajectories of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale converged on a red carpet full of gals, guns and gangsters at the premiere of “Public Enemies.” “We are both fellas, and both dads, and both in the same profession,” Depp, who plays notorious outlaw John Dillinger in the flick, explained of his similarities to Bale. “He’s very good, and tremendously talented.” “He’s a very unique actor,” returned Bale, who spends “Enemies” in hot pursuit of Depp’s Dillinger as FBI agent Melvin Purvis. “And I admire his work.” “Both are so intense and so committed and generous,” marveled Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, who plays Depp’s love interest in the Michael Mann flick. “It’s a really hard question: How do you compare something unique to something unique?” Another unique pop-culture phenomenon is our continuing fascination with the American gangster. Although Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Frank Nitti, Baby Face Nelson and other “Enemies” characters saw their real-life glory days some 70 years ago, we’re still enamored with them. So, what is it that makes gangsters so timeless? “Dillinger, you see, he was a bit more of an outlaw,” Depp explained. “The best thing about being an outlaw was the machine gun — and unlimited ammunition.” “The finest cars,” Bale said of the gangster life. “[Their] cars have this artistry, and they have a sense of the character.” “You can make your own rules, and bend the rules,” reasoned Leelee Sobieski, who plays another Dillinger flame in the film. “[When you're a gangster], crazy things will happen.” “Just saying the name ‘gangster’ — the hats, women and cars,” agreed Jason Clarke, who works alongside Depp in the film as fellow outlaw “Red” Hamilton. “They were guys that did what they wanted.” And speaking of people who can do whatever they want, it was hard to not notice the gangster-like power wielded by Depp and Bale as they walked the red carpet, greeted by shrieks of adoring fans. “I had a crush on Johnny when I was 6 years old,” Sobieski gushed. “I loved him in ‘Cry-Baby’!”

Yeah, I don’t know what it is about the romantic nature of gangsters but I feel that this impressive cast of actors will do a great service to that romantic notion and will do much to revive their appeal. I think the casting for this film is genius … as long as the writing in the film is decent, I suspect this movie will do very well. After the jump, check out a short video interview with Johnny Depp conducted by MTV News — the questions are kinda inane but Depp does a great job responding …

Johnny! Christian! Marion!
‘Public Enemies’ Releases A New Batch Of Movie Posters

Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award-winning actress Marion Cotillard are among the big names starring in this Summer’s cops & robbers film Public Enemies which tells the tale of the notorious crime wave that gripped the nation back in 1930 … making pseudo-celebrities out of criminals like John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. Here is our first look at a new movie poster which features Johnny Depp, who stars as John Dillinger in the film:

I used to be fascinated with the notion that bank robbers could become celebrities in this country but never quite could believe it … of course, this was in the days before the Internet and Reality TV took over the public consciousness. Now I can understand how something like that could happen very easily … tho, it still amazes me that this celeb status could so easily spring up back in the 1930s. I can’t wait to see this film … I hear it’s going to be amazing. After the jump, check out two more posters from Public Enemies — one which features Christian Bale (as Melvin Purvis) and one which features Marion Cotillard (as Billie Frechette) …
