On A 'Mission' to Feed the Needy
Celebs Celebrate Thanksgiving 2011 By Feeding The Hungry

While many of us very fortunate people were enjoying a lovely day of family, friends and food on Thanksgiving Day yesterday, a few celebs were working very hard at the Los Angeles Mission in downtown LA serving food to the less fortunate. Annually, a group of celebs join the ever-present volunteers at the LA Mission to help bring some holiday cheer to those who are in need. Click below to see some of the happy faces that were on hand to prepare and serve meals yesterday.

Celebs Celebrate Xmas 2010 By Feeding The Hungry

Celebrities like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alyssa Milano, Kate Linder (from The Young and the Restless) and Brandy joined a group of volunteers along with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus yesterday to serve hot meals and pass out gifts to the less fortunate people of Los Angeles at the LA Mission. As you may recall, some of these same celeb volunteered at Thanksgiving to deliver meals to the homeless last month … and that same giving spirit inspired them to give of their time again for Xmas this weekend.

Celebs Celebrate Thanksgiving 2010 By Feeding The Hungry

Kirk Douglas and some of his celebrity friends made their way to Skid Row here in downtown Los Angeles yesterday to serve Thanksgiving meals to the thousands of homeless and needy people in the area. Kirk and his wife Anne have been leading the feed the hungry charge each holiday season and this were were joined by actors Kate Linder (The Young and the Restless), Blair Underwood (The Event), John Schneider (Nip/Tuck, Smallville, The Dukes of Hazzard), Brandon Molale as well as local government dignitaries Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Police Chief Charlie Beck and many, many more. Here are a few photos and some deets from yesterday’s event:

Celebrities and political leaders volunteered on Wednesday in downtown L.A., where thousands of people turned out for the annual Thanksgiving meal at the Los Angeles Mission. Officials said they expected to serve 3,500 meals by the end of the day. “I think we’re all on this planet together as a community, and to whom much is given, much is expected,” said “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Sarah Drew. “I’ve been given a lot in my life, and I think it’s really important for me to give back.” Actor Kurt Douglas and his wife Anne have been volunteering at the event for years, saying it’s a way for them to give back to the community. The celebrity couple says they’ve seen an increase in the number of people on Skid Row … “We who are not homeless, we always get together on Thanksgiving with our families, but we don’t ever want to forget that those are families out there who don’t have homes, but they’re still families, and we want to see them happy and be together,” he said. With the economy in bad shape, the Los Angeles Mission is seeing a lot more families in need of help. “We continue to see more people than ever. We’re seeing a different face of homelessness, many who are maybe not on the streets, but living in someone’s basement, garage, maybe in their car,” said Herb Smith of the Los Angeles Mission. Meals were served until 3 p.m.

It is so easy to forget that there are countless people in need on a day like today when many of us are overwhelmed with family, friends and good eats. I, personally, am thankful today for the many folks who give so generously of their time and energy to help brighten up the lives of so many people in need all around the world … not just on Thanksgiving or Xmas but each and every day. Unfortunately, the people who need help far outnumber those who are willing to give back but as long as there are generous people in the world, there is hope that things can get better. No matter where you are in the world today, whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, please take some time to be thankful for all the blessings in your lives. My personal thanks goes out to the people pictured here at the LA Mission yesterday and all the unsung people around the world who are also giving back this holiday season.

Good Deeds
Celebs On A ‘Mission’ To Spread Easter Cheer

Here are a few photos of some of the celebs who made their way to the Los Angeles Mission yesterday to help serve Easter holiday dinners to the homeless people in the area. As you may recall, the LA Mission invites celebs to come help serve food on during the holidays (like last Xmas) and this weekend celebs like Haylie Duff, Gale Harold, Beverley Mitchell and Kate Linder (from The Young and the Restless) heeded the call:

The Los Angeles Mission prepared meals, Easter baskets and more early Friday morning to serve thousands of people in need for Good Friday. The mission will be handing out 1,000 Easter baskets, donated by JAKKS Pacific, to children and 2,000 pairs of shoes, donated by Etnies, to homeless adults and children. “Although the economy some people say is recovering a little bit, we’re not seeing that in the day-to-day needs,” said Herb Smith of the Los Angeles Mission. A long line that wrapped around the block was proof of the continued hardship. The mission is expecting to feed at least 3,000 people, but they’re cooking for about 4,000 just in case more show up. “Our motto is, it’s hope in a meal, so we want to make sure we give them a nice healthy meal and tell them, ‘hey,we love you, keep coming, we’re here to help you get back on your feet,’” said Chef David Thomas. Thomas said they are cooking almost 2 tons of ham, 1,500 pounds of macaroni and vegetables. “It’s a lot of work right now. We’re running back and forth to make sure it’s all done,” Thomas said. Thomas said the mission has been seeing a lot more families in the past year. “We love (the needy) here at the Los Angeles Mission,” Thomas said. “We want to make sure it’s a really comfortable meal, just like a home setting.”

This is so wonderful. It’s so great that celebs choose to give of their time during the holidays but it should not be forgotten that the people who volunteer at the LA Mission all year long are the real heroes here. There is far too much need in this world … but places like the LA Mission help fulfill those needs as much as they can — and they should be applauded. Not everyone can volunteer but everyone CAN DONATE … so if you are feeling especially generous, you can make a donation to the LA Mission HERE so that free meals like these can continue to be served to the people who really need them :)

The Xmas spirit is alive and well
Celebs Give Back This Xmas Season

Last month a bunch of amazing celebs made their way out to the Los Angeles Mission to devote their time and energy to help feed the less privileged people in the area for Thanksgiving. Yesterday, more celebs (including some of the same folks who came out last month) showed up at the LA Mission to help distribute Xmas dinner … here are a few photos:

I just give it up for my girl Kate Linder, who stars as Esther Valentine on The Young and the Restless (and has for the past few decades), who is ALWAYS there at the LA Mission come holiday time to give so generously of her time and energy. In fact, all my love, respect and admiration goes out to the folks who continually and unselfishly give of their time in this way. There are many folks out there who are enjoying a merrier Xmas then they might’ve if not for the generosity of the volunteers at the LA Mission. They do very important work all year long but I like to highlight their efforts around the holidays. If YOU would like to lend a hand by pledging a donation to the Los Angeles Mission you can do so HERE.

The reason for the season
Celebs Give Back This Thanksgiving Season

Acclaimed actor Kirk Douglas, Kate Linder (from The Young and the Restless), Kayla Ewell (from The Vampire Diaries), Gilles Marini (The Sex and the City Movie), funnyman Donal Logue and more were on hand at the LA Mission this Thanksgiving in order to give generously of their time in order to help feed the needy here in SoCal. Here are a few photos of these fine folks workin’ hard for those in need this year:

Hollywood icon Kirk Douglas served up seasonal cheer to homeless people in Los Angeles on Wednesday, dishing up Thanksgiving turkey dinners to the needy for the fifth year in a row. The 92-year-old star of “Spartacus” and his wife Anne were joined by hundreds of volunteers to distribute free meals to thousands of people at the Los Angeles Mission on the city’s skid row. The couple are the founders of the mission’s Anne Douglas Center, which helps train homeless women for employment. “My wife has been trying to help the women that have been forced onto the streets, and she is determined to give them a better life through the Anne Douglas Center where they have programs that improve and rebuild their lives,” Douglas said in a statement. “We gladly come to serve men and women at Thanksgiving time to give them a good meal and strengthen their desire for a brighter future.” Organizers said more than a ton of turkey, 750 pounds of mashed potatoes, 90 gallons of gravy and 800 pounds of mixed vegetables were distributed at Wednesday’s event.

Kirk and his wife Anne Douglas are awesome. It’s just so wonderful to know that they founded such a great program at the LA Mission and never fail to give of their time each and every Thanksgiving season. Much love and props goes out to the celeb folks who, too, gave of their time to give back to the needy this season. I cannot help but be very impressed by those who give of their time … they never have to, but I know it is much appreciated by those who benefit of their kind generosity. Well done!! This spirit of thanksgiving is what makes this time of year so beautiful :)

Feed the World
Celebs On A ‘Mission’ This Xmas

A few very generous celebrities, including the infamous Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, graciously gave of their time and energy yesterday by volunteering at the Los Angeles Mission yesterday to help prepare and serve food for the needy folks there. Along with Melissa Joan Hart, Alyssa Milano, Corbin Bleu, Melissa Gilbert and others, Speidi worked to ensure that some of the needy people of LA were treated to a much-needed Xmas Eve dinner. Here are a few pics from yesterday’s event:

Say what you will about Speidi or any of these celebs … but you have to be impressed with their constant efforts to give of their time to those in need. Speidi come out to the LA Mission EVERY SINGLE YEAR usually at Thanksgiving AND Xmas. They may be portrayed in one way on “reality TV” but they live their lives a different way (in some respects) in real life. Kudos go out to these celebs for reminding us that it is much better to give than to receive. Thanks to their efforts, there are a few less hungry folks in LA this holiday season.

Giving back to those in need
Celebs On A ‘Mission’ This Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! I hope that all y’all are able to spend some time today with loved ones on this happy occasion or, at the very least, are able to enjoy a relaxing and lazy day whatever you choose to do today — wherever in the world. I am in Connecticut for a few days to spend time with David’s family … so posting today will be light.

Here are a few pics of some of the celebs who made their way out to the Crossroads of Hope Mission in Los Angeles, CA yesterday to generously donate of their time in order to help serve food to those in need. This annual event usually takes place outside but because of the massive rain that pummeled LA yesterday (in buckets, I saw it) the event had to be moved indoors:

Thousands of less-fortunate people had a happy Thanksgiving a day early as celebrities and elected officials made their annual trek to Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles to help distribute holiday meals. Acting legend Kirk Douglas and his wife, Anne, again hosted the annual holiday meal at the Los Angeles Mission. An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 people c2owded into the Mission, which was moved inside because of the rain. “We’re going to be tight,” said Al Rossi, one of the mission’s directors. As celebrities filed into the Mission’s dining room, dozens of photographers crowded around, lighting the room up with a strobe of camera flashes fit for a red carpet. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa spooned mixed vegetables onto plates while super model Cindy Crawford scooped mashed potatoes on his left and Kirk Douglas handled other traditional Thanksgiving fixings on his right. Several younger celebrities showed up, including “High School Musical” star Corbin Bleu, who has volunteered at the Mission before. “I’m a very blessed man, and at this time right now it’s just important to be able to give back what God has given to me,” Bleu said. Actors Wilmer Valderrama, Neal McDonough, Nora Zehetner, Joe Campana and model-turned-actress Natasha Alam carried plates out to the event’s attendees. “It’s taking actors back to their roots,” Campana said. “It takes you back to your waiter days.” In addition to the free meal, homeless attendees received free foot exams and health checks.

As always, I am so impressed that these celebs made the effort to give so selflessly of their time in order to help those who are less fortunate. Some of the celebs who came out this year came out last year and the year before that. It’s a very cool thing to see that some celebs are aware of how fortunate they are and they seem willing to give back year after year. These volunteers really show what the Thanksgiving spirit is all about. It’s a great sight to see!
