It's Miller time
‘A View From the Bridge’ Goes Into Previews On Broadway

The new Broadway production of Arthur Miller‘s A View from the Bridge, which stars Liev Schrieber, Scarlett Johansson and others, went into previews in NYC last night at the Cort Theater ahead of it’s official opening on January 24, 2010 (for a limited 14-week engagement. Here is a photo of Scarlett and Liev as they stopped to sign a few autographs after last night’s debut performance and some deets about the show itself:

Tony Award winner Liev Schreiber plays bruising Italian-American longshoreman Eddie Carbone in the new Broadway production of Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge, beginning previews Dec. 28. In director Gregory Mosher’s new staging of the Greek tragedy-inspired drama, Golden Globe nominee Scarlett Johansson (“Match Point,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) makes her Broadway debut as the object of Eddie’s affection, his niece. She’s attracted to a newly arrived immigrant cousin, Rodolpho, played by Santino Fontana (Billy Elliot), arousing Eddie’s anger. Also joining Tony Award winner Schreiber (Glengarry Glen Ross, Talk Radio) at the Cort Theatre are Jessica Hecht, Michael Cristofer and Corey Stoll, plus Alex Cendese, Anthony DeSando, Antoinette LaVecchia, Mark Morettini, Joe Ricci, Morgan Spector, Robert Turano and Marco Verna. Opening is Jan. 24, 2010. A 14-week engagement has been announced. According to production notes, “In A View From the Bridge, Miller’s most passionate drama, Schreiber plays Eddie Carbone, a Brooklyn longshoreman obsessed with his 17-year-old niece Catherine, played by Scarlett Johansson. When Catherine falls in love with a newly arrived immigrant [played by Fontana], Eddie’s jealousy erupts in a rage that consumes him, his family, and his world.” The play was first seen on Broadway in 1955 as a short play paired with A Memory of Two Mondays. (Miller is, of course, the major American playwright known for All My Sons, Death of a Salesman and The Crucible.) A View From the Bridge resurfaced Off-Broadway in 1965, starring Robert Duvall. A 1983 Broadway revival starred Tony LoBianco. In 1997, Anthony LaPaglia played Eddie in a Roundabout Theatre Company Broadway revival. The actor won a Tony for his turn, and the production won the Tony as Best Revival.

On the one hand, I would LOVE to see Liev Schrieber on the Broadway stage. He is actually a pretty fantastic actor (X-Men Origins: Wolverine notwithstanding). On the other hand, I can’t for the life of me imagine that Scarlett Johansson would be very good on the live performance stage. But … what do I know? After the jump, check out a short promo video that features Liev and Scarlett (among others) talking up the play …

The US Premiere
‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ Premieres In Tempe, AZ

Tempe, AZ became “Hollywood central” last night as the city played host to the US premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Hugh Jackman challenged all US cities to prove that they are deserving of hosting the premiere and Tempe narrowly beat out Davis, CA for the win. Hugh was joined by his Wolverine costars Liev Schreiber (Sabretooth), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), will.i.am (John Wraith), Taylor Kitsch (Gambit) and more at last night’s premiere at Harkins Theatres in the Tempe Marketplace … here are a few photos:

Wolverine is a rage-fueled, cranky mutant who prefers to work alone; Hugh Jackman couldn’t possibly be more the opposite. On Monday, however, both could be found in Arizona riding a motorcycle into an action-packed “X-Men” moment. “I’ve played this character for about nine years; I love the character,” said Jackman, who arrived to the “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” world premiere with great fanfare while riding a motorcycle into action, just like his claw-bearing mutant does in the flick. “[I] wanted to show the movie first to the most passionate X-Men and Wolverine fans, so we put a competition out online, and Tempe, Arizona, won. And I’ll tell you: These guys are passionate — they slept out two nights in a row [to get tickets]. Isn’t it the coolest thing?” To celebrate this weekend’s opening of “Origins,” Jackman devised a contest that had cities all across America creating Web sites and posting videos on YouTube. Tempe narrowly defeated Davis, California, and the festivities swept into a massive local shopping mall. A marching band kicked off the confetti-heavy event, the jovial mayor handed Jackman a placard that gave him lifetime parking privileges anywhere in the city, and a gaggle of giggling high school cheerleaders swarmed Ryan Reynolds for a photo. “This thing outranks every single friggin’ Hollywood or New York premiere they’ve ever had,” grinned Reynolds, moments before one of the cheerleaders could be heard bragging to her friends “I touched his butt!” “It’s a nice crowd. You jump into the crowds in L.A. and New York, and you’re liable to come out without a cell phone or a wallet. But here, they’re very sweet, they’re very kind … these people are amped.” While random celebrities such as Alice Cooper, Matt Leinart and recently ousted “American Idol” contestant Scott MacIntyre walked the lengthy red carpet, the film’s stars addressed concerns about enemies that had posed a last-minute threat to Wolverine’s spinoff film: The just-breaking news that the swine flu had canceled its Mexico City premiere and the much-publicized piracy of the flick. “This is a summer, go-to-the-movies joint,” explained Will.I.Am, who plays teleporting mutant John Wraith in the comic book flick. “The cats that saw it on the Internet know that’s not the way to see it. You need to sit in a big theater, get wrapped in the whole world, with the right sound, the right effects and the right environment. I don’t think the [leak to the] Internet is going to play a big role on how it performs.” Judging by the enthusiasm of the fans at the Tempe world premiere, Wolverine will slice through his new enemies just as easily as he has so many evil mutants over the years — and if the movie is a hit, Jackman promised there will be more Wolverine to come. “I’d like to do it; I love the character,” the actor said of possible sequels. “I think a lot will depend on what happens this weekend. We’ll see if people want to see the story.”

It sounds like Tempe, AZ made all of the celebs feel very welcome … congrats to them for winning the right to host the premiere. I think it would be really cool if other movie premieres took place in cities like this all around the country. I’m sure there are many fans all around the country that would jump at the chance to attend a big movie premiere like this. Why should NYC and LA get all the fun? I think everyone should have to right to enjoy some celeb lurve up close.

"WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations"
Hugh Jackman Pens A Letter To ‘Wolverine’ Fans

Hugh Jackman reads blogs, apparently. After a few worrisome comments were published in the venerated movie blog Ain’t It Cool News, Hugh sent an email (and a hawt promo pic) to the folks at Ain’t It Cool that tried to put fans’ fears to rest and explain why some scenes had to be reshot for the upcoming movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Here is the full text of Hugh‘s letter along with the kickass promo pic of some of the X-Men O.G.s (ie. original gangstas) that will be featured alongside Hugh‘s Wolverine in the new movie:

Hey Mate- Would you mind posting this? Thank you for your support! HJ

Hey everyone -

It’s Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie – I owe it all to you guys!

I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we’ve got much more in store!

In the meantime, here’s an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize…

Cheers,

Hugh

Um, HOLY SHIZZ! Can you imagine getting an email from Hugh Jackman? Lordy, I think I’d die … but I’m totes digressing. I think it is really smart of Hugh Jackman to try and nip speculation on the film’s reshoots as soon as possible. Once bad buzz gets going on the Internets, it’s very difficult to undo the damage. I’m not sure that his explanatory email will satisfy all concerns by some of the fans but I think it’ll help some. It’s really very cool of him to to send off an email to try and address fans directly. The photo that came along with the email is pretty sick … it features from left to right: Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), Remy LeBeau/Gambit (Taylor Kitsch), Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Victor Creed/Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber) and Silver Fox (Lynn Collins). Reshoots or not, the film opens in theaters on May 1. I’m already ready. Personally, I have no doubt that the film will be as “badass” as Hugh promises.

No rest for the weary
Naomi Watts & Liev Shreiber Hit The Streets In Search Of Bargains

Earlier today, we got our first look at Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber‘s newborn son Samuel Kai as the proud parents took the lad home from the hospital this week … so what are new parents to do once they bring their baby home from the hospital? Why, they go shopping of course. Here are pics of Naomi and Liev bringing home some lovely wicker items, presumably for their NYC home:

I mean, I know the first thing I’d want to do after bringing my child home from the hospital is go out and shop for wicker. Truth be told, Naomi looks pretty amazing for having just gave birth about a week ago. I’m not sure why but it appears that these newly procured household items are very important to these two — I guess Pier 1 was having a sale that was not to be missed.

Meet the newest member of the Watts-Shreiber family
Naomi Watts & Baby Samuel Kai Released From The Hospital

Proud mama Naomi Watts and her newborn son Samuel Kai, who was born into the world a little over a week ago, were released from the hospital this morning and daddy Liev Shreiber was on hand to bring baby and mama home. Here are a couple pics of the happy parentals carefully navigating the bitter cold, snow and ice in order to safely load their newborn bundle of joy into their car:

The couple were very careful to keep little Samuel Kai covered up as much as possible so that the little guy could be shielded from the cold temps as best they could … that is, until they put the little guy in his car seat. After the jump, check out the first photo of Samuel Kai as he says hello to the big, bad world for the first time …

Welcome to the World, Samuel Kai
Naomi Watts & Liev Schreiber Name Their New Baby

On Sunday we learned that Naomi Watts gave birth to her second child, a boy, with babydaddy Liev Schreiber but at that time no real information was made available … we knew nothing other than the fact that the baby was the couple’s second child. Today we learn that the newborn has been named and we also learn how much he weighed at birth. Here are a couple pics of Liev with firstborn son Alexander Pete as they arrived at their NYC home after spending the day with mommy Naomi and little Samuel at the hospital:

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber have revealed more details about their newborn son, starting with his name: Samuel Kai Schreiber. Samuel – the couple’s second child after year-old son Alexander Pete Schreiber – was born Saturday and weighed 7 lbs., 13 oz, the couple’s rep tells PEOPLE. “Both mom and baby are doing great,” the rep says.

The fiercely private couple are keeping as much information to themselves as possible but it’s nice that they deemed it appropriate to announce the baby’s name. I suspect it will be a very long time before we see the little guy out and about with his family but it is my sincere hope that mother and child are happy, healthy and will be able to go home as soon as possible. It really sounds like the Watts-Schreiber family are in for a very Merry Xmas this year as they’ve already received the best gift they could hope for. Congrats again!!

Not much more info, tho
Naomi Watts Gives Birth To Her Second Child

In Touch Weekly magazine is reporting that Naomi Watts has given birth to her second child with husband Liev Schreiber this weekend in a hospital in NYC. At the time of this posting, no other publication is reporting this news … so either In Touch has the scoop or they’re just completely wrong. Here is the full text of the In Touch announcement, which is painfully bare of deets:

Christmas has come early for Naomi Watts and partner Liev Schreiber! In Touch can reveal exclusively that the actress, 40, had their second child in New York early this morning. The couple already have one SON.

At this point we don’t know if the baby is a boy or a girl, nor do we know what time precisely it was born … hell, we don’t even really know if any of this is true but it seems prudent to me to pass along the info. We should know shortly if the new Watts-Schreiber baby was really born this weekend. I think tentative Congrats! are in order.

UPDATE: E! News confirms that Naomi did give birth yesterday and reveals she brought forth another baby boy … no name has been specified.
