While there were a lot of pretty people on the red carpet (Alyson Hannigan looked amazing, as did Drew Barrymore) the real focus of the night was on who won what for which TV show. After starting with 16 nominations, “Mad Men” won just three Emmy Awards at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night — but one of them was the big one, best drama series. The AMC show about ad agency executives in early 1960s Manhattan often competed against itself, particularly in the category of episode writing, where it had four of the five possible nominations. “Mad Men” also won best drama last year. “30 Rock” won best comedy at Sunday’s awards. The show won five Emmys overall. “We want to thank our friends at NBC … for keeping us on the air, even though we are so much more expensive than a talk show,” said star Tina Fey in accepting the honor. Glenn Close won best actress in a drama for her performance in “Damages,” but she turned her speech into praise for her colleagues. “I want to salute what I call my ‘category sisters,’ ” she said. “I respect you, and I’m inspired by your talent.” She also paid tribute to the show’s writers. Bryan Cranston of AMC’s “Breaking Bad” won his second straight Emmy as best actor in a drama. “I don’t know what I’m doing up here,” he said. “I feel like Cinderfella. … I stand here a humbled man.” Alec Baldwin won best actor in a comedy series for his performance in “30 Rock.” Toni Collette (”The United States of Tara”) won best actress in a comedy. Collette’s win was a mild surprise, as Tina Fey, of “30 Rock,” was considered a heavy favorite.

The thing that stuck me the most about the show was how much camaraderie was being tossed about … from everyone to everyone else. Heaps of praise was laid upon Neil Patrick Harris’s performance as Emmy host and the winners kept congratulating others … it was really nice to see. Loved 1992’s Single White Female? Then you’ll love 2010’s Leighton Meester-Minka Kelly thriller, The Roommate. Like Female, Roommate focuses on obsession: The film follows a college freshman (Meester) who develops an unhealthy fascination with her roommate (Kelly). For her role, Meester says she went method, researching mental illness with the help of psychologists and films like 1974’s A Woman Under the Influence. The actress tried to keep her distance from cast members — and a litter of kittens being used for the film — in order to retain her character’s level of emotional aloofness. “You would think that that idea of playing somebody who’s out of control or lost touch with reality is somehow fun, but it was to a point of discomfort,” the actress says. “[My character] is completely delusional and it’s definitely a cause of a chemical imbalance, so that wasn’t the easiest and most enjoyable thing. Even in her most normal moments, she’s genuinely a disturbed person. She had very abnormal wheels turning at all times.” But will friends let Meester play psychiatrist, now that she’s garnered knowledge about mental health? Not quite, says Meester. “I don’t think they’ll want my advice after they see this movie.”

We already know that Leighton Meester can act in TV, music videos and other miscellaneous projects so it remains to be seen if she can hold her own on the big screen. Personally, I think she can handle it. Playing a psychotic, obsessive crazy sounds like a lot of fun … methinks she’ll do well in this role. Again, we’re being given a “new” movie based on an old movie but Single White Female was so fun the first time around, I’m kinda curious to see what this updated version will look like. This is one redux I’d be willing so watch.

Oh yeah, Penn Badgley is featured in these pics as well but I’m sure he don’t mind gettin’ lumped in with the ladies. I’m really looking forward to the return of this show especially to see if Hil D. will enhance the show or not. Not for nothing but I haven’t actually seen Hilary Duff in anything before so I have nothing to base an early opinion on … I do trust the GG folks to make some great eps so … I’m hopeful. Shoot, no matter what Hilary’s role on the show will be I deffo know that I’ll be tuning in for Chuck Bass’s gay kiss :) Woot!!

Leighton Meester understands that being on a buzzed-about show automatically puts her in the spotlight – but she doesn’t have to like it. “I don’t want most of what comes along with all of this,” says the Gossip Girl star in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar, on newsstands Aug. 18. One particular downside of fame is a rumored sex tape of the star with an ex-boyfriend that has allegedly been shopped around. “[The tape] is not real, so it makes me sort of sad,” says the actress. “It’s unfortunate that it got carried as far as it did.” Meester says the rumor has taught her some lessons about life. “I definitely understand the nature of people better now and that the mere allegation of something like that could be headline news. People think it’s real because somebody says it is.” But the star has friends who watch out for her. “I feel like my friends are in a cult because we’re like, ‘No outsiders!’ ” she says. “I’ve never been crazy. I’m a very good girl, to be honest. I don’t do anything to hurt anybody. Honestly, all I ever do is work.” At work, costar Ed Westwick is one person who can vouch for Meester’s sweetness – and her natural good looks. “The first thing I thought when I met Leighton was … hell, this girl’s gorgeous. And she was incredibly sweet.”

I’m confused … how exactly is the explicit tape “not real”? If she means that it was prolly not filmed for public viewing then she’s most likely correct but to say that the sex tape she made with her then boyfriend is “not real” isn’t really accurate. Whatever the case may be, Leighton strikes me as the kind of woman who learns from her mistakes and I highly doubt she’ll ever get messed up in a sex tape scandal like this again (unlike, say, Vanessa Hudgens, who clearly didn’t learn her lesson the first time nekkid pics of her made their way to the Internets). Moving on, after the jump, check out photos of Leighton from this new issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine where the mag (inexplicably) decided to age her in some of the photos …

The magazine explains, “In an ode to the magazine’s most popular editorial franchise “Fabulous at Every Age,” the Gossip Girl star ages gracefully through the decades with the help of some digital enhancements.” Um, this doesn’t make any sense to me at all. Why not just photograph beautiful women at different stages of age rather than digitally enhance photos taken of a young girl. I don’t get it. Do you?
