Lady Gaga wins 8 awards, Eminem wins 2
The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Are Handed Out

So … last night MTV threw its biggest party of the year, the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards … and despite attempts to hype up the possible drama that might’ve gone down on the show ended up giving us a fairly quiet and painfully drama-free awards show … much to many people’s chagrin. I was able to attend the show last night and from my perspective the show was OK but clearly lacking the excitement from VMA shows from days of yore. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals last night:

Again, for me the carpet was kinda lackluster … kinda quiet. The Jersey Shore kids came out, some of the nominees did as well but really there wasn’t anything to get all excited about the entire time. I will say that Ciara looked the best on the carpet last night. Her dress was amazing … she was a vision just walking down the carpet. There weren’t too many fugly looks … but, as you might expect, the Jersey Shore kids brought way too much tan to the snow white carpet. After the jump, check out some photos from the show itself and find out what the Washington Post had to say about the 2010 MTV VMAs. I think you’ll find their sentiments echo the sentiments of many who watched last night …

There will be no on-stage reunion for Taylor and Kanye
Taylor Swift Will Sing A Song About Kanye West At The 2010 MTV VMAs

Last week Kanye West emerged from a self-induced seclusion from the spotlight to address the childish behavior he exhibited at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards last year. As you may recall, Kanye stormed the stage as Taylor Swift was being presented with her award for Best Female Video in order to decry her win and declare that Beyoncé should’ve been the artist to win the award (an event that was so talked about last year that even President Barack Obama called Kanye a “jackass” as a result). As the 2010 MTV VMAs approached, Kanye thought it the right time to apologize to Taylor Swift for his actions and to announce that he has written a song for her … then rumors started to swirl that Taylor and Kanye would, in some capacity, share the stage at the MTV VMAs (which air LIVE on MTV tonight). Well, I’m hearing that that reunion will actually NOT take place (according to MTV producers) but Kanye‘s interruption of Taylor‘s moment will be addressed on stage … cuz Taylor Swift is going to sing her own song about it:

Be warned, Kanye: Taylor Swift has written a song about you, and she’s singing it at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. The country superstar’s win for best female video last year was marred when Kanye West got on stage and said it should have gone to Beyoncé. Swift wrote a song about the experience earlier this year, and a source familiar with the show said Saturday the 20-year-old will sing the new song at the VMAs, which will be aired live on MTV. The source did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter. The song is on Swift’s upcoming album “Speak Now,” due out in October. The source said Swift performed it during a secret rehearsal in Los Angeles for the VMAs on Friday. Though the West-Swift moment only lasted but a few minutes, it has endured for what seems to be a lifetime. It became a cultural watershed moment and gave West the most intense backlash of his career, despite an apology delivered later. He dropped out of the spotlight, and last week on Twitter, said that he endured death wishes, had to cancel a tour and let go of employees. He again apologized to Swift and said he wrote a song for her and hoped she would sing it – and if not, he would perform it for her. But instead, Swift will be singing her own song. Kanye Bares All on Twitter: ‘I Wrote a Song for Taylor Swift’ The Grammy-winner is known for writing intensely personal songs, and skewering a few former boyfriends along the way. After initially expressing her hurt, Swift has avoided addressing the matter. West will also be a performer at the awards show; both are nominees. It’s not clear what song he will sing. Though there was anticipation of possible fireworks related to last year with West’s performance, Swift’s song all but guarantees it.

Ah yes … it’s MTV VMAs time again … and, because it happens every year, you can count on the fact that something will happen on that stage that will set tongues wagging for days afterward. That Kanye/Taylor thing that took place last year was such a big deal, it seemed to go on forever … and now, here we are, a year later ready to drag it back from the dead again. To be fair, I think Taylor Swift does deserve her moment to have the final say on the matter … but, it’s really time to move on. Undoubtedly, some new interesting event will take place tonight LIVE as MTV airs the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and then we can obsess about that for the next few days. I will be on the red carpet and in the hiz at the Nokia Theater here in downtown LA tonight for the really big show … I cannot wait to see what will go down.

USA For Haiti
‘We Are The World’, The Redux

25 years after the original version was recorded, a new batch of stars convened at the Jim Henson Studios in Hollywood, CA to re-record the charity anthem We Are The World in an effort to raise money and awareness for Haitian Relief. 25 years ago, We Are The World was written and recorded in an effort to raise money for African Aid so it is very fitting that the song would be remade for the people of Haiti. Here are a few photos from inside the recording studio yesterday for this momentous occasion:

Producers were putting the final touches Tuesday to a remake of “We Are The World” with stars such as Barbra Streisand, Wyclef Jean and Celine Dion lending their support for Haiti’s quake victims. It was 25 years ago that Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen joined others at the famed A&M Studios in Hollywood for an all-star recording of the same song to benefit famine relief in Africa. That effort, USA for Africa, raised 63 million dollars. This time, dozens of other A-listers — who also include Usher, Lil Wayne, Pink, Natalie Cole and the Jonas Brothers — took to the same soundstage late Monday for an hours-long recording that dragged into the night. The aim is to raise money to help survivors of the massive January 12 quake that killed 170,000 people and devastated what was already the poorest country in the Americas. No cameras were allowed inside, but the song’s producers said “We Are The World – 25 For Haiti” will air during NBC television’s coverage of the opening of the Winter Olympics on February 12. More than 70 stars — many of them hip-hop artists — lent their voice to the effort, none of them participants in the original recording. Rapper Wyclef Jean, a Haiti native, said in a statement he was “proud to be joined by so many members of the artistic community that want to support the region and have donated their time and talents to providing an effective way for the global community to get involved with helping the Haitian population.” The original tune was co-written and produced by Jackson, who died June 25 of cardiac arrest, Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones. Richie and Jones produced the new version. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis, who directed “Crash” and also co-wrote “Million Dollar Baby,” filmed the session for an accompanying video. “What an unbelievable group of people who have come together to give their voices, for a cause to start the healing of a people who have experienced a devastation of such magnitude,” said Richie. Among the other performers spanning a broad swath of genres and ages, from 83-year-old Tony Bennett to 15-year-old Justin Bieber, were Carlos Santana, Brian Wilson and Al Jardine of the Beach Boys. “It kind of hit me that I guess this is something way more important than I could have ever imagined,” rapper Lil Wayne, who is playing Bob Dylan’s part from the original recording, told a news conference. The recording was timed just a day after the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards to ensure the maximum number of stars would attend. The contemporary version of the song and the video will be available to buy through online and traditional retailers. Producers say all proceeds will go “directly” to earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

This is such a fantastic idea … what a great way to raise money for Haitian relief. It’s such a shame that Michael Jackson couldn’t be part of this redux but it was nice of Kanye West to wear one of MJ‘s jackets so that he could be there in spirit. I can’t even begin to express how much of an impact the original We Are The World had on me when it was released in 1985. I loved that song so much … I would sit by the radio and record it on cassette tapes every time it aired … I would have cassette tapes with just this song recorded on it over and over again. I’m really looking forward to hearing this version. I’m not sure why this report claims there were “no cameras” allowed in the studio because there were and a lot of photos have been made available. After the jump, check out some individual shots of some of the folks who participated in We Are The World: 25 Years for Haiti yesterday …

"REMEMBER CLOTHING IS A CHOICE. WE WERE BORN NAKED!!!"
Kanye West Blogs About His Love Of Fashion

Kanye West has posted a new blogpost on his official website to address the “haters” that voice their opinions on his style choices and fashion sense. Kanye and his model girlfriend Amber Rose have been making the rounds at European Fashion Weeks as of late and decided he has read enough criticism about his love of fashion without issuing a reply. Here is the full text of his latest blog rant. All of the language, misspellings and capitalizations are Kanye‘s alone:

WHEN IT’S ALL SAID AND DONE, REMEMBER THE FEARLESS, REMEMBER THE DREAMERS, REMEMBER THOSE WHO REPRESENT THE GHETTO…THE FAIRY TALE OF NOTHING TO SOMETHING. I’M BRIEFLY SADDENED BY NEGATIVE COMMENTS, BUT I HAVE TO REMEMBER THOSE PEOPLE ARE SCARED, INCAPABLE OR JUST PLAIN IDIOTS. WE ARE THE FUCKING ROCK STARS BABY. NO COCAINE, JUST LIFE MY N****S!! NO COCAINE, JUST LIFE! IT’S FUNNY TO ME WHEN FASHION BLOGGERS DOWN OUR OUFITS AND THEN SUPER JOCK OUTLANDISH SHIT ON THE RUNWAY BUT THEN THEY DRESS MAD PRUDE AND DON’T LIVE FASHION. WE LIVE IT MAN. FUCK THAT, WE LIVE IT!!! WE LIVE IT SO HARD PEOPLE LIVE THROUGH US! WE REPRESENT YOUR INNER SPIRIT!! THE CHILD IN US ALL, THE BRUTAL HONESTY, THE NAIVETY, THE BRAVE WARRIOR, THE ADRENALINE THAT ALLOWS A MOTHER TO LIFT A CAR IF HER CHILD WAS TRAPPED UNDER IT! REMEMBER, THERE WAS A TIME WHEN EVERYBODY DISSED MICHAEL JACKSON EVERY CHANCE THEY COULD. IMAGINE THE PRESSURE OF BEING A TRUE ICON. VERY FEW HUMAN BEINGS ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO TAKE CONSTANT HATE!!! IF WE DON’T DO WHAT YOU FEEL IS THE SHIT, YOU BEAT US UP VERBALLY AND MENTALLY, LIKE A CATHOLIC SCHOOL TEACHER BEATING A CREATIVE STUDENT INTO SUBMISSION. I CAN HEAR YOU SCREAMING ‘COLOR INSIDE THE LINES!!!’ WELL FUCK YOUR COLORING BOOK, COLOR BY NUMBERS APPROACH TO LIFE. AT THE END OF THE DAY WHO ARE WE HURTING??? OH “THE NEW BLACK???” SINCE BARACK IS PRESIDENT BLACKS DON’T LIKE FUR COATS, RED LEATHER, AND FRIED CHICKEN ANY MORE?! WHEN YOU TRULY UNDERSTAND CULTURAL SETTINGS, BOUNDARIES, AND OUR MODERN DAY CASTE SYSTEMS, THEN YOU CAN FEEL THE GLORY AND PAIN FROM THE DAYS OF KINGS IN AFRICA TO THE NEW KINGS OF THE MEDIA. LET THE BALL PLAYERS DANCE AFTER THEY SCORE! IT’S LIFE MY N****S, IT’S LIFE! REMEMBER CLOTHING IS A CHOICE. WE WERE BORN NAKED!!! FRESH IS AN OPINION, LOVE IS OBJECTIVE, TASTE IS SELECTIVE, AND EXPRESSION IS MY FAVORITE ELECTIVE. NO MORE POLITICS OR APOLOGIES!!!

To be honest, I kinda agree with this treatise on conformity. Love him or hate him, Kanye does live his life openly and boldly expresses himself whenever possible. A lot of times he does it in a rude, disrespectful and unruly manner … behavior I am loathe to condone. But I do give him props for his bold love of fashion because he does not adhere to the constraints of conformity. I would prefer he relegate his ranting to this sort of thing rather than anything else. The boy does love fashion … and he is not ashamed to let everyone know about it.

Tour got axed before it even began due primarily to poor ticket sales
The Kanye West & Lady Gaga ‘Fame Kills’ Tour Is Dunzo!

Hmmm … it looks like Kanye West‘s big mouth has finally hurt him where it matters most … in the wallet. As you may recall, Kanye very douchily stole the spotlight from Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards last month as she tried to give her Best Female Video acceptance speech and set off a firestorm of controversy with pretty much everyone on the planet (even President Obama called Kanye a “jackass” over the matter). Normally, his asshole behavior (which tends to piss off people on a regular basis) is just excused away without his needing to face any consequences. Days after the VMA incident, it was announced that Kanye would be teaming up with Lady Gaga for a co-headlinging tour called Fame Kills. Late yesterday, Live Nation released a statement annoucning that the tour has been CANCELED without offering any explanation why. Today … we know why … according to TMZ, ticket sales for the Fame Kills Tour were so low that the concert promoter decided to cut their losses before the tour even got underway … and additionally Kanye and Gaga just couldn’t get along. I guess Kanye and his “colorful behavior” don’t sell like they used to:

If Kanye West doesn’t regret hijacking Taylor Swift, he will now — we’re told his concert tour with Lady Gaga was scrapped because ticket sales sucked. And “sucked” happens to be a nicer version of the word we were told. And not only that — our insiders say another factor in the cancellation was West and Gaga’s people were at each others throats like their last names were Gosselin. When it came down do it, we’re told Gaga decided she’d be better off playing smaller venues … and far from the headache caused by Kanye’s ever present drama.

LMAOO!! Finally … perhaps, just maybe, Kanye West will finally learn that being an asshole will actually make people dislike you. How else will he learn better behavior? I find it humorous that Gaga was just days ago defending Kanye‘s douchey behavior and now we learn that she couldn’t stand him either … neither one of them sound very professional. I personally had ZERO interest in seeing this show so I have no personal stake in the matter … but I did want to pass along the info to highlight the fact that being an asshole DOES have its consequences. Do I think Kanye West will learn a lesson here? Not really … but there is always hope.

Executive order
President Barack Obama Calls Kanye West A ‘Jackass’

Altho I haven’t made any public announcements, I think I will be following the New York Post blog Pop Wrap‘s lead in NOT covering Kanye West anymore on my blog … but this is too good to not share with all y’all. In the wake of Kanye‘s horribly selfish and outrageous decision to ruin Taylor Swift‘s moment at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards last Sunday night, President Barack Obama was asked what he thought of Kanye‘s behavior. Unknowingly, President Obama was recorded giving his honest opinion on Kanye West‘s actions and was heard calling him a jackass. As it turns out, the recording of President Obama‘s assessment of Kanye has made its way to the Internets, courtesy of TMZ:

TMZ has obtained the audiotape of President Barack Obama calling Kanye West a “jackass” for hijacking Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech during the VMAs. The audio was recorded just before Obama went on camera to do an interview with CNBC. Before the interview began, Obama — referring to Kanye’s antics on stage — said “I thought that was really inappropriate,” then adding, “He’s a jackass.” After making the remarks, Obama said “Where’s the pool?” Presumably, he was worried the joke would go wide. He noted the last time that happened, he got burned for killing a fly. Obama said, “Cut the President some slack.”

LMAOOOO. When the president calls you a jackass, you’re pretty much a jackass. While I’m sure President Obama wouldn’t have been quite so open with his opinions had he known he was being recorded, I’m glad that this little nugget of awesomeness was recorded for posterity. The president was only saying what pretty much everyone else believes. After the jump, hear the snippet in full …

Kanye West Ruins Taylor Swift’s Winning Moment At The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards

Another MTV Video Music Awards has come and gone and while the focus of the show should be on the touching tribute to the late Michael Jackson by his peer Madonna and his sister Janet Jackson or the coolest performance of the night by P!nk … the focus is, instead, on what an asshole Kanye West is. In true Kanye fashion, West stormed the MTV VMA stage after Taylor Swift won the first award of the night, Best Female Video, after she stunned the audience by upsetting fellow nominees P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. As Taylor Swift was accepting her award, Kanye jumped up on the stage, took the mic from her hand and declared that Beyoncé should’ve won the award because she made “the best video of all time”. Taylor looked crushed, hurt and embarrassed and was not allowed to finish her acceptance speech … Beyoncé looked stunned and embarrassed by Kanye‘s rant as well. The auditorium booed Kanye off the stage, he flipped off the crowd with his middle finger and then was asked by MTV to leave the show. Here are a few photos of the incident:

The MTV video music awards held on Sunday paid tribute to the late Michael Jackson, but was overshadowed by an outburst by rapper Kanye West, who interrupted an acceptance speech by U.S. singer Taylor Swift. West, who is known for his outspoken ways, jumped up on stage while the 19-year-old Swift was making an acceptance speech for best female video for her hit song “You Belong With Me,” beating out singers including Beyonce Knowles and Lady Gaga. “I am really happy for you,” West said. “But Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.” MTV said West, who was spotted earlier on the red carpet drinking alcohol, was ejected from an awards show already known for its circus-like atmosphere. West received loud boos from the crowd when his name was mentioned later in the show.

Kanye was seen carrying a big bottle of booze and was asked by MTV to leave the premises shortly after his rant:

Apparently, Kanye decided to go home and blog an “apology” to Taylor Swift for his outburst … but it doesn’t take a careful reading to understand that it’s not an apology at all:

This “apology” has since been removed from his official website. After the jump, check out video of this outrageous insult to Taylor Swift and see how Beyoncé managed to right the wrong a wee bit at the end of the show …

Kanye West Gets Suddenly Shy

Ego maniacal rap superstar Kanye West is usually never one to shy away from attention … but somethin’ must’ve gotten his goat up here in SoCal yesterday when he confronted a photog who was shooting him in an effort to get the pap to stop taking photos. I believe this is the first time in recorded history that Kanye West asked NOT to be photographed since that time last year he wiled out on a photog at LAX Airport:

Perhaps the gentleman was filming his bad side or mebbe Kanye just done lost his mind but for him to ask not to be photographed seems very strange to me. Not for nothin’ but Kanye West is one of the most fame hungry musicians out there …but I suppose Kanye needs to diva out every once in a while. I don’t think it’s a good idea for him to start asking for people to stop paying attention to him because one day (mebbe sooner than he would like), people will stop.

Sexy time
Kanye West & Amber Rose Do Miami

Rap superstar Kanye West surfaced in Miami, FL this week with his ladylove companion/model Amber Rose lookin’ like he was chillin’ like a villain’ on penicillin. Kanye and Amber lazed by the beach, he is in his cool dudes, she in a barely there string bikini that she only wore half of … pimpin’, y’all:

Kanye West had quite the “booty call” on Tuesday. The rapper romped with his on-again girlfriend, model Amber Rose, on the beaches of Miami. Rose had no problem baring it all: She frolicked topless — and almost bottomless — while canoodling with her man on the beach throughout the day. Um, Amber, it’s Miami, not Europe!

LOL, you know what … I say, work it girl! Amber Rose has got a slammin’ body and as a model, I’m sure she’s very comfortable being nekkid at any given time. Kanye looks like a pimp daddy when he’s with her, it’s like a win-win sitch all the way around. To be honest, Ms. Rose kinda irritated me the first time I saw her but she has grown on me. I love her attitude and her style … she looks fun. As long as she’s the one gettin’ nekkid and not Kanye, I have no problem with photos like these ;)

The 9th annual awards show pays tribute to Michael Jackson
The 2009 BET Awards Are Handed Out

Last night the 9th annual BET Awards were handed out at the Shrine Auditorium here in Los Angeles, CA and earlier today we saw video of Janet Jackson‘s appearance on the awards show where she delivered a statement to fans of her late brother Michael Jackson. As I noted earlier, the entire BET Awards were a tribute to Michael‘s memory. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals from last night’s awards show:

I LOVED seeing the cast of Bravo TV‘s The Real Housewives of Atlanta … including alums NeNe Leakes (FTW!), Lisa Wu Hartwell, Sheree Whitfield and new castmember Kandi Burruss. I am really looking forward to the return of the Atlanta Housewives in August :) I also love the photo of Zoe Saldana and Nichelle Nichols (who both portrayed the Star Trek character Uhura) together on the red carpet … beautiful, beautiful ladies. The show itself was very entertaining … in between award presentations and live performances, host Jamie Foxx made sure to remind the audience that this year’s BET Awards was a true celebration of Michael Jackson‘s legacy. Here are a few pics from the show itself and a rundown of what went down:

Michael Jackson’s sister Janet thanked the crowd at the BET Awards Sunday night for paying tribute to her late brother. “My entire family wanted to be here, but it was just too painful,” she said, holding back tears. “To you Michael is an icon. To us Michael is family. And he will forever live in all of our hearts.” The star-studded BET Awards was an appreciation of Michael Jackson, who died Thursday at age 50. He was “the greatest star in the world,” Joseph Jackson, father of the late entertainer, said on Sunday night. “I wish the world had recognized him when he were living,” Joseph Jackson told CNN’s Don Lemon outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. “Right now he’s bigger than ever. But I wish he was here to see all this, to hear all this.” When asked about circumstances surrounding his son’s death, he said, “I have a lot of concerns but I can’t get into that. … I don’t like what happened.” The awards opened with a fleet-footed New Edition, with Bobby Brown, performing an energized version of the Jackson 5 hit “The Love You Save,” to raucous praise. Host Jamie Foxx wore a red, leather “Beat It” jacket for his opening monologue and did his best to imitate Jackson’s backward glide across the floor. In addition to Foxx, presenter Jeremy Piven mixed praise for Jackson with comic relief. “If it wasn’t for Michael Jackson, people like Justin Timberlake would be selling curly fries in the valley,” the actor said. “I mean that with love.” This year’s performers included, Beyonce, Keyshia Cole and R&B artist Neyo who performed a hard-hitting tribute to the 1990s with appearances by acts Keith Sweat, Guy and Bell Biv Devoe. The presenters included the past and present Uhura of “Star Trek”: Zoe Saldana, who starred in the film, and Nichelle Nichols of the TV show. The show also honored the soulful Ohio trio, The O’Jays, who were presented the Lifetime Achievement Award. Tevin Campbell performed a rendition of The O’Jays classic “Forever Mine.” Johnny Gill, Tyrese and Trey Songz performed a rumbling, soulful medley of The O’Jays hits that had some in the audience wondering if Songz was older than his years. Among the award winners, Atlanta, Georgia-based singer Keri Hilson, who was nominated in four categories, received best new artist and Beyonce won best female artist. Debra L. Lee, chairman and chief executive officer of Black Entertainment Television, said Jackson’s death both saddened and energized the awards organizers. “When we heard the news of Michael Jackon’s passing we knew immediately we’d have to change the nature of this show,” she said. “We put the show together in a matter of three or four days. It’s truly been a labor of love for us,” Lee said.

I was able to watch the show myself and it really was a very celebratory event. Except for a few touching moments, it really looked like everyone was having a great time. To be honest, I think that is the best way to honor someone’s passing. It was said many times during the BET Awards show last night — Michael Jackson was directly responsible for last night’s awards show. His trailblazing legacy as an African American performer paved the way for all of the African American artists who are enjoying successful careers today. I think it was right that his contributions were honored … and celebrated. Congrats to all of this year’s winners of BET Awards.
