A ‘Spooktacular’ Hallowe’en Night

Last night was a pretty fun Hallowe’en for David and me. We decided to dress up as Maverick and Goose from Top Gun and spend our night hanging with a few friends, both new and old. First, we went over to Gillian and Tim’s place to spend some time with 4 week old Gemma on her first Hallowe’en and then we made our way to the Burtka-Harris Halloween Spooktacular. Our good friends Emma and Josh are BFF with NPH and his fiancée David so we were invited to ring in the Pagan New Year at their place. It was a night of thrills, chills and good times. Click below to check out some fun photos.

“Let’s not take the vacation. Make a movie instead.”
Joss Whedon Talks To ‘Entertainment Weekly’ About ‘Much Ado About Nothing’

Yesterday we learned that director Joss Whedon has secretly filmed his own movie version of the William Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing and today we get to hear from Whedon himself about the project. Joss sat down to chat with Entertainment Weekly magazine about his secret Shakespeare film (which, he says, is due out next year). As you can read below, Joss got suddenly inspired to make his own Shakespeare film … and decided to make it with his wife instead of taking a vacation for their 20th wedding anniversary. Sounds about right, don’t it?

Joss Whedon Talks About ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 9′

Early last month we learned that a major character in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe was killed off in issue #39 of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 comic book series and this month, season 8 will come to an end with the release of issue #40. Buffy creator Joss Whedon talks to Entertainment Weekly about the end of season 8 and what we can expect in season 9 (which Whedon promises will be more like the TV series). If you have yet to find out with Buffyverse character was killed and want to remain unspoiled, you might want to avoid reading further. As for the rest of you, read on.

Joss Whedon Explains Why He Left TV For Film

Last Monday we heard the HORRID news that plans are moving forward to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Joss Whedon‘s support, input or blessing. A day later, Whedon himself went on the record to voice his displeasure at hearing the Buffy reboot news and reiterate how much he is AGAINST plans for a new Buffy movie. Today we get to hear from Joss again but this new interview with SciFiNow magazine has NOTHING at all to do with the Buffy reboot, instead he talks about his other creations Firefly and Dollhouse and he explains why he’s no longer (at least for now) interested in working in TV:

On Dollhouse and Firefly: “The situation with Firefly was that I always knew exactly what I was doing and Fox was ignorant… The situation with Dollhouse was that Fox was trying to get it, but we had come at two different shows, we had done that accidentally, and it got to a point where I didn’t know what I was trying to accomplish, and you can’t go into a story room with that feeling, because it’s already really hard. I remember thinking this is the difference between this and Firefly, because with Firefly, I knew, and here, now I’m not even sure. I was just thinking, ‘I’m writing a shoot-out on a dock – I’m a whore.’ They’re like, ‘No, that doesn’t make you a whore,’ and I’m, like, ‘I’m fairly certain it does!’ They explained that, actually, having sex for money makes you a whore. But I also did that.”

On Dollhouse in retrospect: “It accomplished some of the things I wanted to accomplish. The questions of identity and humanity I thought were out there front and centre, and I’ve heard people respond really well to that, and I’ve heard people say the show even helped them. I never conceived of a more pure journey from helplessness to power, which is what I always write about, and in that sense I feel we accomplished a lot of it. I do feel that part of what we tried to get at kind of got taken out at the beginning – and it really was more important to how the show would work than I even realised when they took it out – which was sex. The show was supposed to be, on some level, a celebration of perversion, as something that makes us unique. Sort of our hidden selves … I feel when we had to take sex out of the equation, it became kind of a joke or almost unsettling. Because we couldn’t hit it head on – and so much of our identity is wrapped up in our sexuality, and this is something Eliza [Dushku] was talking to me about, as something she wanted to examine before I even came up with the idea, and to have that sort of excised and marginalised and sanitised, and not to be able to hit on the head what they were doing, made the show a little bit limited and a little bit creepy at times. I think we still did some fairly out-there stuff, and I’m proud of what we did, given the circumstances, but with those circumstances, it was never really going to happen the way it should have.”

I can’t even imagine how awesome a Joss Whedon project would be on TV if the powers that be would actually let him do the things he wants to do unfettered and uncensored … but, alas, we may never find out. Whedon‘s interview goes on to discuss why he’s not really interested in working on TV anymore. Read those excerpts, after the jump …

"This is a sad, sad reflection on our times"
Joss Whedon Responds To News Of The ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Reboot

Yesterday afternoon we learned that the reboot of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer film is officially moving forward WITHOUT any input at all from creator Joss Whedon. Today, we get to hear from Joss himself about this Buffy reboot. Joss was asked to respond to the news of the planned Buffy reboot, which will be written by a woman named Whit Anderson, and this is what he had to say:

I’m glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film. This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

This is exactly the type of response you’d expect from Joss Whedon, yes he is obviously pissed and he makes that clear … but he manages to refrain from making any low blows and actually writes a body of text that will very likely be even better than the entire script for the planned Buffy reboot. I am still not calmed down from the news that Warner Bros. plans to move forward with an entirely new Joss Whedon-less Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. I’m not sure if folks understand but the new reboot will NOT feature any of Buffy‘s beloved friends! The studio owns the rights to the character Buffy Summers but they DO NOT own the rights to any of her friends … Giles, Willow, Xander, Cordelia, Angel, Spike and on and on. Those characters are owned by Joss Whedon and they will NOT be appearing in the big screen reboot that WB is planning. It is just unbelievable that they think they will be able to profit from Whedon‘s work without his influence in the film at all. Complete bullshit!

As a result of the Buffy reboot news, a Facebook fan campaign called I’m with JoJo (which is similar to the I’m with CoCo campaign that started up in support of Conan O’Brien earlier this year) has been launched in an effort to show Warner Bros. that NO ONE wants this Buffy reboot to happen without Joss Whedon‘s involvement. You can join the I’m with JoJo campaign HERE and let your voice be heard.

This is not the last we’ll be hearing of the Buffy reboot but it will likely be the last we hear from Whedon on the reboot … which means, this may be the last thing of import we hear about this travesty that just won’t die.

No Whedon? No Buffy.

Script Doctor
Joss Whedon Talks His Association With ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’

Last month we got the official confirmation from the man himself that Joss Whedon, a god among Buffyverse fans, has been hired to direct the big screen adaption of the Marvel Comics title The Avengers. But today we learn that Joss is working on more than just The Avengers, which won’t even start production until next year … it turns out that he is also playing script doctor for Captain America: The First Avenger as well:

Although Joss Whedon will be writing and directing The Avengers, his first foray into the Marvel movie universe has been as a script doctor on The First Avenger: Captain America, and in this exclusive interview he discusses his contribution to that project.
“I just got to make some character connections,” explains Whedon. “The structure of the thing was really tight and I loved it, but there were a couple of opportunities to find his voice a little bit — and some of the other characters — and make the connections so that you understood exactly why he wanted to be who he wanted to be. And progressing through the script to flesh it out a little bit.” Serving as a script doctor is nothing new to Whedon … As such, it was an enjoyable exercise of a creative muscle that he hasn’t used in quite some time. “It’s fun in this case,” offers Whedon, “because, A, they’ll actually use the things I wrote, which is rare; and, B, it’s a fun puzzle to go in and say, ‘Okay, this is what works, this is what needs to be connected, and here are some key moments.’ Then the third thing is that it takes place in the ’40s, so I got to write ’40s dialogue, and that’s never not fun!”

Firstly, this is great news … Joss has a meticulous eye for continuity so it would make sense that he would be able to tweak the script for Captain America (and Thor, for that matter) so that the scripts for the individual Marvel superhero films are in line with his script for The Avengers. Secondly, even if Joss weren’t directing The Avengers, it is a very good sign that he would be brought on to play script doctor for the individual Marvel superhero films anyway because he tends to have the magic touch when it comes to script writing/fixing. As you may recall, yesterday we got to see a few photos from the London set of Captain America so we know that filming is currently underway … with Whedon‘s script tweaks, the film should be off to a great start.

The gang's all here
The Cast Of ‘The Avengers’ Assembles At 2010 Comic-Con

On Friday we learned straight from the horse’s mouth the official confirmation that the amazing Joss Whedon would be directing the big screen adaptation of The Avengers. Today we get to see the full principal cast of the film assembled all together at a panel for the film yesterday at 2010 San Diego Comic-Con. Here is our first look at the assembled cast of The Avengers on stage together yesterday afternoon:

As footage rolled of the Avengers’ logo, a big “A,” we heard Samuel L. Jackson’s voice: “Super heroes came together,” he bellowed, “the day the Avengers were formed.” Then they came out one by one. Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson. Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Chris Evans as Captain America. Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye. Mark Ruffallo as The Hulk. Joss Whedon as The Director. Downey calls this film more ambitious than Inception. Joss Whedon had tears in his eyes. He said, “I had a dream all my life and it wasn’t this good.” And 6500 hundred people in Hall H screamed from the very depths of their multiverse-loving souls. The Avengers had assembled. And just like that they were gone. After seeing the footage of Captain America and Thor they had a job to do: to prepare to shoot the greatest comic book movie in the history of time.

You will note that Mark Ruffalo is included in the cast as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, just like we heard he would be. Also included in this photo is Clark Gregg (sandwiched between Robert Downey, Jr. and Scarlett Johansson) who will play Agent Coulson (just like he did in Iron Man and Iron Man 2) and director Joss Whedon. I can’t even begin to wrap my head around the awesomeness assembled in this photo together. With Joss Whedon at the helm, the possibilities are endless for The Avengers to truly be the greatest superhero film of all time. After the jump, check out one more photo of The Avengers cast assembled on stage at Comic-Con yesterday afternoon …

Comic-Con-firmation
It’s Official: Joss Whedon To Direct ‘The Avengers’

Director Joss Whedon and producer JJ Abrams confirmed yesterday news that was pretty much common knowledge for the past few months despite the lack of official confirmation — Whedon will be directing the big screen adaptation of the Marvel comic book series The Avengers. Joss and JJ took to the stage together at 2010 San Diego Comic-Con at The Avengers panel to officially announce Whedon‘s involvement in the film, much to fans’ extreme glee:

Joss Whedon announced today that he’s officially directing The Avengers, while on stage with J.J. Abrams at San Diego’s Comic-Con. He joked that Marvel didn’t have enough money for a real press release, so he took it up himself to confirm previous reports that he was in talks to direct the film. When pressed for further details, he said that it was way too early to reveal anything. The news isn’t exactly surprising, but still it’s good to have final confirmation on the matter. As a Whedon fan, I’m excited to see what he can do with the material. Whedon mentioned that he was a huge fan of early Avenger’s comics while growing up, and he seemed understandably excited and humbled at having the opportunity to direct the film.

The fantastic Joss Whedon fan site Whedonesque was at The Avengers panel at Comic-Con yesterday and they provided a tweet-by-tweet rundown on their Twitter profile of what was said by Joss Whedon on stage. After the jump, read some of the quotes attributed to Whedon during yesterday’s Comic-Con panel discussion …

Might a new Whedon project be in the works?
Joss Whedon Hangs Out With A Few Old Friends

Nathan Fillion, who starred in the final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as well as the Firefly series and movie AND opposite Neil Patrick Harris in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog, posted a photo on his official Twitter profile that was accompanied with the caption “Together Again”. The photo featured Firefly colleagues and BFFs Joss Whedon (Master of the Universe), Adam Baldwin (Firefly), and Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dollhouse) hanging out together (as they gazed upwards at … something), which immediately set fans’ tongues wagging that the men might be working on a new project togehter:

Nathan Fillion posted a new picture today that shows him hanging out with Firefly alums Joss Whedon, Adam Baldwin, and Alan Tudyk, giving us only the clue “together again” to go by. They’re mysteriously clinging to a tree and looking up at the sky, but for what? Is this some new Firefly project? A precursor to the next installment of Dr. Horrible? Or are they just at Nathan’s house watching fireworks over the weekend? Fillion is being madly mysterious about the whole thing, which may or may not be his intent. If it is, well played sir. If it isn’t, just tell us what this is all about!

Now, I’m not getting my hopes up that there is a new project in the works. It seems more likely that the guys were hanging out under the fireworks on the 4th of July and Nathan just got around to sharing. Still, it is great seeing them all together again … ain’t it?
