Revenge Of The Chosen

So … last night David and I went on a movie date to see Inglourious Basterds. I have to preface this whole post by clearly stating for the record that I hate Nazi movies. While I understand that WWII and all the horrible things associated with it is an important part of world history, I cannot express how much I loathe the mere sight of anything Nazi -related. While I liked Inglourious Basterds, I must confess that I was far too stressed out for the entire duration of the film to “enjoy” it … inasmuch as one can “enjoy” a film about Nazis:

While it is true that the main focus is on the Basterds, American Jews who went into Europe for the sole purpose to find, kill and scalp Nazis, I can’t say that I reveled that much in their success. Revenge and death is just not appealing to me. I know that the audience is supposed to cheer when the tops of Nazi heads are sliced off with huge bowie knives or when their heads are bashed in with baseball bats or when they are riddled with bullets or when they are burned alive but … I just can’t cheer. As far as Quentin Tarantino films go, this is one of his good ones. His trademark style is all over this film, including his adept use of music. I guess I don’t really understand the point of a fictionalized story like this. BE WARNED A HUGE SPOILER POINT IN THE FILM IS COMING SO DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU WISH TO REMAIN UNSPOILED … in this film, the monster Adolph Hitler is brutally killed by the Basterds before he and his closest Nazi underlings are burned and blown up. The fact that his never happened in history seems … weird. If people get comfort from seeing this, then I’m all for it (I understand the term for this kind of film is Kosher Porn). The man was a disgusting waste of flesh but I guess the fact that his death didn’t happen like it was portrayed in the film is what bothered me more. Again, murderous revenge is rarely appealing to me but … I think I would’ve felt much better about what I saw on screen if that’s actually the way that piece of shit met his end. Again, I did like the film … but the stress of all that grotesque inhumanity really took its toll on me.

Not sure what’s on deck for today … David and I have a lot of food shopping to do so we’ll prolly take care of that today. Other than that, it looks like it may be a lazy Saturday afternoon for us.

Brangelina hold court in Tinsel Town
‘Inglourious Basterds’ Premieres In Hollywood

Last night Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth and others were joined by family and friends at the Los Angeles premiere of their new film Inglourious Basterds at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA. Angelina Jolie held court with Pitt and managed to show-off a few new tattoos on her person. Here are a few pics from last night’s movie premiere:

Angelina Jolie is never anything but slim and toned. But she looked impossibly slender as she joined partner Brad Pitt on the red carpet for the premiere of his new film Inglourious Basterds last night. The 34-year-old actress wore an unforgiving leather mini dress, which clung to her fragile frame as she stood alongside tanned and healthy-looking Brad. Angelina also showed off new additions to her tattoo collection – swirls around the existing body art on her arms. Last night was Brad and Angelina’s first public appearance since they walked the red carpet at Cannes in May. The couple, whose relationship has been the subject of repeated rumours in recent months, made a show of togetherness as they embraced on the red carpet. But while Angelina was greeting everyone with a large Hollywood smile, Brad looked less comfortable. Of course, it may well have been the stress of weeks of heavy promotional duties for his new movie, which have seen him repeatedly away from his family. While Brad was promoting the film Angelina remained at home with Maddox, 8, Pax, 5, Zahara, 4, Shiloh, 3, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 1. But, ever the professional, Brad patiently signed autographs for the huge crowds of fans waiting for him and Angelina. He then led the mother of his six children through the crowd by her arm, his teeth set as he negotiated the busy red carpet.

As you may already be well aware, Inglourious Basterds is the American-Hunting-Nazi film that was directed by Quentin Tarantino and opens in theaters on August 21. Hollywood is really having a field day with all that WWII era Nazi films these days so hopefully this one will be the last … at least for a while. To be honest, my interest level in this film was much higher when it was first announced last October but it has since waned in the past few months. I think the trailers that feature Brad Pitt speaking in that horrid Southern drawl is what has been turning me off. David has mentioned that he is very much interested in seeing this film so we’ll prolly end up seeing it after all. I can’t remember the last Brad Pitt movie that I liked … mebbe this will be the one.

'Basterd' Brad does 'Inglourious' promo
Brangelina Invade The Cannes Film Festival

Angelina Jolie has joined her pseudo-hubby Brad Pitt in France for the Cannes Film Festival as the couple were spotted trying to sneak their way in for a quiet dinner last night. Earlier today, Brad was on hand for a photocall in order to promote his new film Inglourious Basterds which was directed by Quentin Tarantino and also stars Eli Roth, Diane Krueger and more. Here is a pic of Brangelina at Cannes last night and then a couple of pics from Brad‘s appearance at today’s photocall:

U.S. director Quentin Tarantino brings his eagerly awaited World War Two movie “Inglourious Basterds” to the Cannes film festival on Wednesday, with Brad Pitt adding some star power to the red carpet. The movie, which borrows its title from Italian director Enzo Castellari’s 1978 picture “Inglorious Bastards,” is one of 20 entries in the main competition. Tarantino, a favorite in the French Riviera resort, won the coveted Palme d’Or in 1994 with “Pulp Fiction,” and rushed to have his latest movie ready in time to present to the jury. It has been in the works for more than 10 years. “I like that it’s the power of the cinema that fights the Nazis,” Tarantino said in production notes distributed in Cannes before the movie’s world premiere. Pitt’s expected presence will be welcome by many of the thousands of reporters in Cannes, where the world’s biggest film festival is in its second week. It ends with a prize ceremony on Sunday. While critics say the quality of the main selection of films has been generally high, the absence of many A-list stars and celebrities has starved Cannes of some of its usual buzz. Inglourious Basterds is described as a revenge story, a recurring theme at this year’s festival with Hong Kong’s Johnnie To presenting “Vengeance” in the main competition and several more films revolving around retribution. Tarantino’s film is set in the first year of the German occupation of France, where character Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the execution of her family at the hands of a Nazi colonel. Elsewhere in Europe, Pitt’s character Aldo Raine forms a group of Jewish-American soldiers to wreak revenge on German forces. Diane Kruger plays an undercover agent on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich, and eventually the separate strands converge.

Cannes ain’t a party until Brangelina roll into town. I don’t believe that Ange has any films that will be screened at the film festival but it looks like Brad is happy to take up the spotlight again. After all of the big award nominations he received last year for his work in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (and his eventual disappointment at losing every single one of those nominations), I suspect he is anxious to get back into contention for new awards. Will Inglourious Basterds be the film that will eventually lead to Oscar gold? I doubt it … but at least Brad looks like he’s having fun pretending.

Apparently women can be basterds, too
‘Inglourious Basterds’ Releases Another New Poster

Previously we’ve learned that Brad Pitt is a basterd. Then we learned that Eli Roth is a basterd. Today we find out that basterdism is not relegated to the male sex as Diane Kruger has been found out to be a basterd as well. Brad, Eli and Diane will be appearing in the new Quentin Tarantino film Inglourious Basterds and Diane is featured in the film’s latest movie poster:

Basterds, as you may recall, were Jewish-American Nazi hunters who sought out and punished WWII war criminals in their own bloody way (scalping, decapitating, etc.). It looks like Diane is not really dressed for bloody decapitating but I’m sure she figures in the tale in some important way. She’s deffo the prettiest of the basterds that we’ve seen thus far.

Eli Roth's a Basterd
‘Inglourious Basterds’ Releases A Newer Poster

Apparently Brad Pitt isn’t the only basterd of note to be featured in the new Quentin Tarantino film Inglourious Basterds, due out later this year. As you may recall, on Sunday we saw the first character poster from the new film which features Brad Pitt as a basterd … today we get to see the second character poster which features director/actor Eli Roth as a basterd:

Basterds (misspelling intentional), as you may or may not know, were a group of Jewish-American Nazi hunters who were dispatched after WWII to track down the war criminals … it turns out that these particular hunters had a penchant for scalping and/or beheading the Nazis that they found. I was totally unaware that Eli Roth (who famously made the films Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel 2 and Death Proof/Grindhouse with Tarantino) was A.) an actor and B.) appearing in this film. Something tells me that he’ll be able to pull off the part, tho. I’ve met Eli a few times and he’s a really great guy … I’m really looking forward to seeing him in this role (he’ll be playing Sgt. Donnie Donowitz). The more I read about this film the more intrigued I become. I might have to check it out when it opens this August.

Brad's a Basterd
‘Inglourious Basterds’ Releases A New Poster

Here is our first look at new movie poster for Brad Pitt‘s new film Inglourious Basterds (which is being directed by Quentin Tarantino) that clearly decrees that Brad is a Basterd … behold:

As you may recall, Basterds tells the tale of a group of Jewish-American Nazi-hunters who brutally scalp and/or behead the Nazis that they found … which, of course, means it will be a nice family-friendly movie. In any event, this is what Brad will look like in his role as Lt. Aldo Raine, described by Tarantino as a “hillbilly straight from the mountains of Tennessee”. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this film … I think I’ll need to see/hear more before I form an initial opinion. What do y’all think … does this sound like a movie you’d like to see?
