The ‘Green Lantern’ Movie Will Be In 3D

In January we learned that the big screen adaptation of the classic DC comics series Green Lantern, which stars Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, will begin filming this month. Today we learn that the film will be jumping on board the hugely popular 3D bandwagon and will be filmed in 3D:

What kinds of green constructs test pilot Hal Jordan dreams up to fight the darkest evil of the galaxy in Warner Brothers and DC Entertainment’s “Green Lantern” may remain in doubt, but one thing is for sure for the 2011 superhero film: it will hit screens in 3 Dimensions. A Warner Brothers representative has confirmed for CBR that Martin Campbell’s “Green Lantern” will bow in 3D in 2011. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively and Mark Strong, the action film based on the classic (and currently chart-topping) “Green Lantern” series begins filming shortly in New Orleans. As CBR reporter earlier today, it appears as though test shooting will soon be underway for the film, though more details about cast, plot and how the movie will tie in with a proposed “Justice League” picture remain unconfirmed.

Woot!! As a big fan of 3D films, I am ALL for this news! Green Lantern, and his magic ring, is sure to bring the FX fun to the big screen … how awesome will it be to see his superpowers extend out of the screen and into the audience?! Oh yes, I am really excited now. I can see it now … the big battle scene between Green Lantern and Sinestro — ring vs. ring — exploding before our eyes in digital 3D. If they do it right, and I’m certain they will, Green Lantern in 3D will be really very cool. I’m also really excited about this proposed Justice League movie … it makes sense that it would be worked on concurrently with other DC superhero films like Green Lantern. All of this is very good news to me. Ugh … how will I be able to stand the wait? The film hasn’t even begun principal filming yet.

Big Tease
New ‘Green Lantern’ Concept Art Leaks To The Internets

Last month we learned that filming is scheduled to begin next month on the big screen adaptation of the comic book Green Lantern (starring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively). Since that news was released, we’ve heard reports that both Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong are being considered for roles in the film … and today, we get to check out some concept art reportedly created for the film:

A collection of seemingly official concept art from Ryan Reynolds’ space-cop adaptation Green Lantern showcases a few of our favorite members of the Corps. So who’s in? hese concept designs were discovered by Cosmic Book News and later confirmed to be true concept art designs on the Green Lantern Crps message bards by the Green Lantern Spotlight Podcast. Nothing is official yet, but we’re hoping the concept art of Tomar-Re at least is for real, since he’s scaring the crap out of us. Not the intended purpose of the character, of course, but still freaky. Tomar-Re is the fishy bird-faced alien from the planet Xudar. Tomar-Re trains new Green Lantern Corps members and fights injustice across his sector. But of course he looks much more comically alien in the comic books … And [then], there’s Kilowog! Another new-recruit trainer and gigantic fellow from the Bolovax Vik, where he was a scientist — which is kind of a running theme among the Green Lanterns.

Included in this batch of concept art is an image of The Guardian and a fan art rendering of what Green Lantern villain Sinestro (reportedly to be played by Mark Strong) might look like. The concept art looks really genuine to me and the fan art created Sinestro looks pretty cool, too. Since filming is supposed to begin in a few weeks, it would make sense that genuine concept art might come to light. What do you think, is this the real deal? If so, does it bode well for the way the movie may turn out?

Someone's gettin' a big head
Peter Sarsgaard Joins The Cast Of ‘Green Lantern’

Last July we learned that Ryan Reynolds has been cast as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in the big screen adaptation of the classic comic book series and just this week we learned that Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) has been cast as love interest Carol Ferris and that filming will reportedly get underway in March. Today we learn that Peter Sarsgaard, aka Mr. Maggie Gyllenhaal, has been cast as supervillain and Green Lantern nemesis Dr. Hector Hammond … who is known for his powers of telepathy and his trademark “colossal cranium”:

The Hollywood Reporter tonight broke the word that actor Peter Sarsgaard has been cast in Warner Brothers Films’ adaptation of DC Comics’ “Green Lantern” landing the role of Hector Hammond, the movie’s first major villain who is best known to comic fans for his colossal cranium … Originally in the Green Lantern comics of the ’60s by John Broome and Gil Kane, Hammond was a grossly exaggerated figure whose massive head granted him telepathic powers after coming into contact with a strange meteor. The villain was recently revived by writer Geoff Johns, particularly in the “Secret Origin” arc of “Green Lantern” where Hammond beings as a possible suitor Carol Ferris, the eventual girlfriend of hero and test pilot Hal Jordan. Sarsgaard’s casting makes the third actor to sign on for the project set to hit theaters June 17, 2011. Both Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are already on board to play Joran and Ferris respectively under the direction of Martin Campbell. However, casting lists indicate that the film will also feature the villain Sinestro when it finally bows in theaters. Written by Greg Berlanti with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green with a rewrite by Michael Goldenberg, “Green Lantern” is set to begin filming this March in New Orleans.

Excellent, excellent casting. As you can see in the side-by-side photos of Sarsgaard and the comic book villain Hammond that they look very similar. I seem to recall that Dr. Hector Hammond‘s head was even bigger than it appears in this graphic so I wonder just how big they’re gonna go with Sarsgaard‘s head. I’m glad to know that the villain Sinestro (who ultimately becomes Green Lantern‘s main nemesis) will be introduced in this film … my guess is that he will be introed at the end of the film must like the Joker was introduced at the end of Batman Begins and Moriarty was introduced at the end of Sherlock Holmes. All this Green Lantern news is great … I can’t wait to hear and SEE more!!

Plus the romantic love interest has been cast
The ‘Green Lantern’ Movie Will Reportedly Begin Filming In March

Last Summer we learned the amazing news that Hottie McHotness Ryan Reynolds has been cast as the lead in the upcoming Green Lantern movie adaptation … today we learn that the film has been given the greenlit to begin filming in March with a tentative release date of June 2011!

Warner Bros. Pictures has moved forward with “Green Lantern”. Visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas recently posted an update about the film through her blog page that this movie adaptation of DC Comics character has got its official green light, MTV reported. “‘Green Lantern’ got the official green light today,” Goulekas wrote on Wednesday, January 6. She additionally hinted that the film will kick off its principal photography in March, claiming “And not a second too soon – only 10 weeks out from shooting!” “The Proposal” actor Ryan Reynolds has been set to play the title character. Meanwhile, there was rumor that “Gossip Girl” star Blake Lively and “Elektra” actress Jennifer Garner were among the candidates to be the leading lady. Other names which were also mentioned on the list of possible Green Lantern’s love interest included James Bond’s girl in “Casino Royale” Eva Green, Mission: Impossible 3″ star Keri Russell and Diane Kruger from “Troy”. “Green Lantern” will follow Hal Jordan, an ordinary man who was chosen by a dying alien named Abin Sur to receive a green energy-powered ring used for protecting the planet. Martin Campbell will serve as the man behind the lens while Donald De Line, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Haas will produce. This action adventure movie is set for June 17, 2011 release date in the U.S.

This is great, great news! I love Green Lantern and I am very much looking forward to the release of this film. Because Lantern‘s superpower resides in his power ring, there is sure to be a lot of special effects in the film … and hopefully a shower scene for Ryan Reynolds. OK, mebbe that second bit won’t happen but, well, you never know. Additionally, it turns out that one of the actresses above has been cast in the role of Carol Ferris, Green Lantern‘s love interest in the film. After the jump, find out who it is …

First actor to play a character from both Marvel & DC Comics
Ryan Reynolds Lands The Role Of Green Lantern

It is being reported that Ryan Reynolds has won the casting battle to play the part of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in the planned big screen movie adaptation of the comic book hero. It was rumored that both Justin Timberlake and Bradley Cooper were up against Ryan for the role but it looks like Ryan won the role. This makes Reynolds the first actor to play a character from both Marvel Comics (he featured in the Blade series of films and played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and DC Comics (Green Lantern is one DC‘s big superheroes):

Warner Bros. Pictures has hired X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Proposal star Ryan Reynolds to play the title role in the anticipated Green Lantern, scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release. Based on the DC Comics hero, the action-adventure will be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye) and produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti. Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. The Hollywood trades say that Reynolds and his camp entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests, along with actors Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test. The studio had holding options on the actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds’ option would have expired end of day Friday. Production is expected to begin in January. The “Green Lantern” was created in 1940 by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell. Introduced in 1959, Hal Jordan is a second-generation test pilot, an ordinary man who was given the power ring and battery (lantern) by a dying alien named Abin Sur. When Abin Sur’s spaceship crashed on Earth, the alien used his ring to seek out an individual to take his place as Green Lantern: someone who was “utterly honest and born without fear.” Reynolds recently starred in Fox’s “Wolverine,” in which he played Wade Wilson/Deadpool. The character is now being developed for a spin-off to which Reynolds is attached. He also played Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity.

As much as I LOVE Ryan Reynolds, I was really pullin’ for Bradley Cooper to get the part. I can totally see Hal Jordan in Cooper … and I was really lookin’ forward to seeing Coop in those tight superhero spandex. Ah well, I guess I’ll just have to settle for Ryan Reynolds squeezin’ his goodies in those superhero spanx. Wait … why was I all upset for again?? On second thought, WOOT!! What do y’all think … is this good news or bad news?
