'Precious' wins the biggest award of the night
The 2010 NAACP Image Awards Are Handed Out

Last night celebs made their way to the Shrine Auditorium here in Los Angeles, CA to attend the 41st annual NAACP Image Awards which annually celebrates the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts (motion picture, television, recording, and literature), as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors. As you might expect, the amazing film Precious was the big winner of the night … and rightly so. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals last night:

It was a winning night for “Precious” at the 41st NAACP Image Awards. The heart-wrenching tale of an illiterate and abused teen who finds hope in a Harlem classroom was named outstanding motion picture and outstanding independent film at Friday’s ceremony. Stars Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe, screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher and director Lee Daniels also won. Daniels excitedly accepted the best-picture prize, surrounded by his cast and fellow producers. “No one in Hollywood told me they wanted to see a movie about a 350-pound black woman with HIV,” he said. Sidibe objected, and Daniels corrected himself: “She’s not 350 pounds. This was before you were hired.” The director twice told the orchestra to stop playing him off, but Daniels was ultimately cut off as gospel duo Mary Mary took the stage and the show came to a close. Presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Image Awards honor diversity in the arts and outstanding achievements in film, television, music and literature. Sidibe cried as she accepted the award for outstanding actress in a motion picture for her starring turn as Precious, the overweight, twice-pregnant teen who discovers her self-worth through reading and writing. “It’s so awesome to win! I love winning,” said the Oscar nominee, who made her acting debut with this film. “I want to thank my God for ordering my steps, for everything that my life was and everything that it is now.” Fellow Oscar nominee Mo’Nique, who has swept the supporting actress prize throughout Hollywood’s awards season for her moving turn as abusive mother Mary Jones, added another trophy to her collection with the Image Award for her role in “Precious.” “For all the Mary Joneses, I love you unconditionally, baby,” she said. “For all the Preciouses, I love you unconditionally. Let’s start loving each other again.” Other winners Friday included Keri Hilson, Maxwell, “Brothers” star Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Chris Rock. Hilson was named outstanding new artist, Maxwell won for male artist, Mitchell took the award for actor in a comedy series and Rock accepted the documentary award for his film “Good Hair.” Mitchell was moved to tears as he accepted his trophy. “As long as you all got legs, I’m going to always walk,” the wheelchair-bound actor said. Rock said he wasn’t prepared for his documentary win. “I made this movie just for black people,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of documentaries, and I said I want the blackest movie of all time.” Tyler Perry was honored with the Chairman’s Award for his philanthropy and career achievements. Wyclef Jean received the Vanguard Award for raising funds and cultural awareness after the earthquake in Haiti. Human-rights activist Van Jones received the President’s Award. Music mogul Clarence Avant was inducted into the Image Awards Hall of Fame at the ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium, which was hosted by Anika Noni Rose and Hill Harper and broadcast live on Fox.

What a fantastic show! After the jump, check out some photos that were snapped in the press room at the NAACP Image Awards last night …

The 3rd annual
The 2010 BET Honors Are Handed Out

On Saturday night, Black Entertainment Television hosted their 3rd annual BET Honors ceremony at the Warner Theatre in Washington DC. The BET Honors, which was established in 2008, seeks to “celebrate the lives and achievements of African American luminaries” in an annual event that will be broadcast on BET during Black History Month. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals Saturday night:

It should come as no surprise to learn that Whitney Houston, who is enjoying a pretty spectacular comeback these days, was honored at The BET Honors this weekend … after all, we saw photos of a crazy-lookin’ Whitney making her grand arrival in Washington DC late last week. After the jump, check out a few photos from the show itself and find out who was honored at The BET Honors this year and when the show will air on BET next month …

An angel in heaven buys new wings
Behold! A New D&G Store Is Born Unto Thee

Celebrities of varying types and degree braved the cold, rainy night here in LA to make their way to the D&G store opening on Robertson Blvd. in West Hollywood, CA last night for an event that raised money for the Art of Elysium charity. It turns out that Paris Hilton and Benji Madden, recently broken up, both showed up at the same party last night. Does this mean a reconciliation is in the works? Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals last night and some deets on the party itself:

Could a reunion be in the works for Paris Hilton and Benji Madden? It certainly looked that way [last night]. The two arrived mere minutes apart for the grand opening of the D&G boutique on Robertson Boulevard hosted by Rachel Bilson. Paris was doing interviews on the carpet as Nicole Richie and Joel Madden arrived together at the event, which benefitted Art of Elysium. After Nic and Joel took photos, they brushed right past Paris without even saying hello and headed inside the soiree. But when Benji arrived right behind them, it was another story … Paris’ ex-boyfriend stopped to greet her in mid-interview, and the two went inside the store together, where she quickly pulled him into a private corner so they could talk. The usually photo-happy heiress waved off photogs as the former couple chatted cozily together. After grabbing drinks at the bar, Paris quickly approached Nicole to say hi, and then she and Benji headed out to the smoking patio for some more quiet conversation. Both Paris and Benji looked happy and friendly as they hung together, but when asked if she and Benji were getting back together, all Paris offered was a knowing smile. Ultimately, Benji left the bash with Joel and Nicole, leaving Paris to hang with sister Nicky and David Katzenberg. And while Nicole looked superskinny again in tights and a tutu-type skirt, she ate french fries inside the fete. Also making the fashionable scene: Lauren Conrad, Kevin Connolly, Josh Brolin and newly single Ginnifer Goodwin.

HMMM. I don’t think I like the idea of Paris and Benji getting back together again. Mebbe they just had a few loose ends to tie up and this was the first time they were able to see one another since the break-up. I mean, a press-heavy event with lots of bystanders around may not be the ideal place to have a heart-to-heart with your former lover but we are talking about Paris Hilton here. If stuff like this didn’t happen in public, how would we know that she even exists? Overall, it sounds like it was a pretty good turn out for the event … afterall, if it’s one thing that the world needs in these trying economic times, it’s a new D&G boutique to shop in :)

This year's 'Dreamgirls'?
‘Cadillac Records’ Premieres

Academy Award winner Adrien Brody and Academy Award nominee Beyoncé Knowles were joined by others at the Los Angeles premiere of their new movie Cadillac Records which took place at The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, CA Monday night. Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals:

The cast boasts Oscar, Golden Globe, Emmy and Tony winners — and a group of up-and-comers that’s a veritable Who’s Who of young Hollywood — but it was for the producer of the flick that traffic stopped last night outside the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, where “Cadillac Records” held its world premiere. OK, it doesn’t hurt when you’re a producer that also stars in the film — and it really doesn’t hurt when your name is Beyoncé Knowles. But if she was the highlight of a red carpet which also included co-stars Jeffrey Wright, Columbus Short, Adrien Brody and Gabrielle Union, chances are Beyoncé didn’t see it that way — which was exactly what made her so much fun to work with in the first place. Beyoncé came to get down, like everyone else did. She came in with no ego,” Wright beamed of Mrs. Carter to MTV News. “She just was so willing to let it out and be vulnerable and emotionally present. We were all part of an ensemble that came to smoke — that came to celebrate that music.” “I think she really did the work, and it shows,” added Short. “She deserves kudos for it. She deserves a round of applause.” She’ll likely get much, much more — already being pegged as a possible Oscar nominee for her performance as Etta James, a role for which she reportedly gained 15 pounds. As Short explained to MTV News last February, the film follows the flood of musicians who populated and made famous the hallowed halls of Chess Records, where singers like Chuck Berry (Mos Def), Muddy Waters (Wright) and, yes, Miss James got their start. But while the many who walked the carpet couldn’t hold back their praise for her, the 27-year-old superstar told MTV she was waiting for the good news from just one more spectator before she could call it a day. Luckily for her, that one person — Etta James herself — was in attendance. “She is! Just imagine!” a nervous Beyoncé squealed, half in delight, half in fear. “She’s one of my heroes, and I always loved her voice, but now knowing what she’s been through, she’s one of my heroes. I’m not sure if she thought [I would be good] as her. I’m very, very nervous. And now? “I actually spoke with her and she told me, ‘I loved you from the first time you sung,’ ” Beyoncé beamed … “Cadillac Records” opens December 5.

You know, you gotta love the moxy that Beyoncé has to play the roles of people who are still living (unofficially, she portrayed Diana Ross on screen in Dreamgirls and now she plays Etta James in Cadillac). It would be a daunting notion to play living people on screen even if you were a highly celebrated actor … let alone someone the caliber of Beyoncé. I give her props, tho … she goes after what she wants and, 9 times out of 10, gets it. It remains to be seen if this movie will be loved by the audience as much as Dreamgirls was but it does have that same feel about it … no? I, for one, am very interested to see if B has the chops to pull off playing the role of the legendary Etta James. I’m also very interested to see if her acting prowess has improved since the last time we saw her in theaters. Do y’all think she is capable of winning an Oscar this time around?
