Kicked Off My Sunday Shoes

Last night Darion and I were invited to the Hollywood premiere of the new Footloose film so we put on our dancing shoes, I put on my jean jacket and we made our way to the Village Westwood Theatre to partake of the festivities. I have to tell you … we had a blast. Not only was the movie fun for me to see again (I saw and reviewed the film last week) but the afterparty was a TOTAL blast! D and I snapped some fun pics last night, including one with Footloose star Kenny Wormald. We had the time of our lives!

Movie Review: ‘Footloose’

So … last might I was invited to an early screening of the new Footloose remake film and, to be honest, I was very resistant to the idea of even seeing the film. I am SUCH a big fan of the original 1984 film, which stars Kevin Bacon in his break-out role, that I had pretty much convinced myself that any remake would be terrible … and outright pointless. So many other remake films are so disappointing, I assumed the same would be true for Footloose. But, I decided I should prolly see the film before I formed an opinion in order to be fair. I have to tell you, I am so glad I saw the movie because I actually liked the remake … a lot! I know, I wouldn’t believe it either if I heard this from someone else but it’s true. Gonna Cut Loose

So … my plans for last night didn’t really work out the way I thought they would. As the night grew late, I ended up no driving down to Anaheim, CA for the Bush concert. I really did want to go but the thought of the trek thru traffic … well, my laziness won out. My plan for tonight (absent another bout of laziness) is for my friend Jen and I to make our way to the Paramount Studios lot for an early screening of Footloose. HMMM … we’ll have to see how my night turns out.

Watch: The ‘Footloose’ Remake Releases A Movie Trailer

Last month we got our first look at promo photos from the upcoming remake film Footloose. As you may recall, this new version of Footloose is based on the film of the same name from 1984 which starred Kevin Bacon … this new version, stars Kenny Wormald. While I’m not a huge fan of remakes, I am sometimes interested to see how a new spin can be put on an old film in the hopes of breathing fresh, new life into it. Click below to check out the poster artwork and trailer for Footloose to see what YOU think of this remake.

It Came From the 80's
First Look: New Photos From The ‘Footloose’ Remake Hit The Internets

In June of last year we learned that dancer Kenny Wormald won the lead role of Ren McCormack in the upcoming remake of Footloose (after Gossip Girl‘s Chace Crawford decided to pull out of the film) and today we are getting our first look at the movie. In a new promo photo released from the new version of Footloose, we get to see Wormald dancing with Julianne Hough who will star as his female lead Ariel. Whether you like it or not … a new version of Footloose is headed our way.

At least he's got some dancing experience
Kenny Wormald Will Star In The Upcoming ‘Footloose’ Remake

First in early 2009 we learned that plans were in the works to produce a remake of the famed 80′s film Footloose (which starred Kevin Bacon) but that Zac Efron would NOT be appearing in the lead role, then we learned that Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford had signed on to appear in the film. Then earlier this year we learned that Chace, too, decided to pull out and NOT appear in the Footloose remake. But today, in the latest chapter of the Footloose casting saga, we learn that newcomer and MTV‘s Dancelife star Kenny Wormald has officially signed on to star in the new version of Footloose:

A new face in Hollywood is stepping into Kevin Bacon’s shoes for a remake of “Footloose.” Paramount Pictures announced Tuesday that Kenny Wormald will take on the role Bacon originated in the 1984 original about a rebellious city youth who busts some moves in his new town, where dancing has been banned. “High School Musical” heartthrob Zac Efron had planned to star but dropped out of the “Footloose” remake last year. Wormald’s previous credits include the MTV series “Dancelife.” He will co-star alongside two-time “Dancing With the Stars” champion and country music singer Julianne Hough. The cast also includes Dennis Quaid. Due in theaters April 1, 2011, “Footloose” will be directed by Craig Brewer (“Hustle & Flow”).

I have to say, I have serious reservations about this planned Footloose remake … the fact that so many folks do NOT want to be in it is troubling. But I will say that I like the idea of a relative unknown taking the lead … and the fact that he is a dancer is very encouraging. I love the original film far too much to get too excited about this remake (becuase I know for a fact that the new version will not feature as much bare butt nudity as the original, damnit) but it sounds like the film is finally on track. Who knows, it may strike a cord and be a big hit. I don’t get impressed by very many remakes so … I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Guess he gotta cut 'loose
Chace Crawford Quits The ‘Footloose’ Remake

About a year ago, in May of 2009, we learned that Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford had signed on to play the lead role of Ren McCormack in the planned updated remake of the classic 1980′s film Footloose (which stars Kevin Bacon in the lead). But today we learn from Entertainment Weekly that Crawford has decided to pull out of starring in the film due to his obligations to filming new episodes of Gossip Girl. At this point, there has been no decision on who would replace him … and considering that Kenny Ortega has also pulled out of directing the film, it may be time to rethink this whole thing. Tho, EW reports that the studio is still committed to making this remake:

Looks like Chace Crawford won’t be filling Kevin Bacon’s shoes after all in the remake of the iconic 1984 movie Footloose. Crawford’s rep has confirmed that the Gossip Girl hottie has backed out of the dance-loving lead in the remake. Sources tell EW.com that the studio is now likely to cast an unknown, possibly launching a nationwide search for the role. (Previously, Zac Efron was attached to the role but dropped out to avoid being typecast as the musicals guy.) Paramount declined to comment but one source tells EW.com that the culprit this time is Gossip Girl’s shooting schedule. The frothy CW show is scheduled to resume production in July, but Paramount is hoping to get Footloose into production sometime this summer, and Crawford can’t do both at once. Although Crawford signed on to the film about a year ago, almost everything else about the project has changed since then. About five months after Crawford joined the cast, director Kenny Ortega dropped off the film, saying he was “exhausted” from his frenetic work on the Michael Jackson concert film This is It. Once that happened, the studio abandoned its most recent rewrite from Erin Brockovich screenwriter Susannah Grant. Writer/director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) penned a rewrite. Brewer’s redo, which some say is closer to the original film — about a town that’s outlawed dance and music — has been fully embraced by Paramount chief Adam Goodman. Sources say Goodman and Co. would like Brewer to direct the film, but Brewer is already committed to helm Mother Trucker for New Regency. Meanwhile, Dancing With the Stars alum Julianne Hough is still lined up to portray the lead character’s love interest, portrayed in the original by Lori Singer.

IF this remake has to be made, maybe it’s for the best that an unknown actor play the role. With an unknown actor in the lead, there is a chance that this remake might be able to keep some of the innocent spirit of the original film. It’s been my belief from the beginning, tho, that this Footloose remake is a bad idea. I cannot see how the Footloose storyline could capture the imagination of today’s young audience (which is why casting Chace Crawford was a really good chance at attracting that audience anyway) and would, most likely, not satisfy older fans of the original film. If this whole idea died in pre-production, I wouldn’t mind one bit. Considering how many things are going wrong with the film, mebbe the universe is putting its foot down? What do y’all think … should Paramount continue to move forward with this planned Footloose remake?

Let's hear it for the boy!
Chace Crawford Signs On To Star In The Remake Of ‘Footloose’

After much speculation that Zac Efron would be chosen as the lead in the remake of the classic (and totally fabulous) 80′s film Footloose (about a big city boy who is forced to live in a small town that outlaws dancing and who ends up teaching those small town folks that dancing is A-OK all while romancing the preacher’s wild child daughter) it has just been announced that Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford has been cast as the film’s lead. Apparently, Zac is trying to move away from “musicals” and passed on the film, leaving the door wide open for Chace to snag the role (and our hearts). In celebration of this news, Pink reader Ethan created a fun poster which I’ll post here along with the full text of the press release issued by Paramount Pictures:

Paramount Pictures announced today that Chace Crawford will play the lead role of Ren McCormack in the film “Footloose,” which will be produced and directed by Kenny Ortega. Over the course of his 30-year career, Emmy Award-winning director and choreographer Ortega has worked with superstars Madonna, Michael Jackson, Kiss, Cher, and Diana Ross. He choreographed the classic “Dirty Dancing” and, most recently, directed all three “High School Musical” films. The hugely successful trilogy has broken numerous records including “High School Musical 3: Senior Year’s” record opening for a song-and-dance film grossing $42 million in its first weekend. The film will be produced by the highly successful team of Craig Zadan (a producer of the original “Footloose” in 1984) and Neil Meron. Together, Zadan and Meron produced the blockbuster “Hairspray” and the critically acclaimed “Chicago,” which was the first musical in 34 years to win the top honor of Best Picture Oscar at the 2002 Academy Awards. The film will also be produced by Dylan Sellers (“Agent Cody Banks”). Academy Award-nominated Susannah Grant (“Erin Brockovich”) wrote the recently green-lit screenplay. Crawford is best known to audiences worldwide for his role on the hit series “Gossip Girl.” He is currently starring in Joel Schumacher’s drama “Twelve” along with Emma Roberts and 50 Cent. Crawford is repped by Eric Podwall and CAA. Production on the movie is set to begin shooting in March 2010.

OMG … I LOOOOOOOVE Footloose!! Altho I am not a big fan of “remakes”, I think that sometimes they can be successful. I understand that ABC will be airing a remake of the fantastic 80′s sci-fi TV series V this Fall (more on that later) and now Footloose … I think both of these remakes can be really great. Now we need to find out who will play the wild child preacher’s daughter. I’ve heard that Hayden Panettiere has been considered but someone also mentioned Miley Cyrus‘s name (which I’m not too keen on). This movie is so rich with fun scenes, I can’t wait to see how it all comes together. They better keep the big dancing in the barn scene … and they better make sure all those acrobatic dance moves are kept intact — even if it means they have to cast a body double (just like they did for Kevin Bacon in the original). I am sooooo excited about this. Any Footloose fans out there? What do y’all think?
