Anuradha Koirala is the 'Hero of the Year' for 2010
CNN Celebrates The Heroes Of 2010

Celebrities and real life heroes convened at the Shrine Auditorium here in Los Angeles, CA last night to attend the taping of CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute which honors the people who have gone above and beyond to help those in need … our everyday heroes. The ceremony, which will air on CNN on Thanksgiving night this Thursday, was attended by Hollywood A-listers as well as real life heroes who have made an impact this year … including the 33 Chilean miners who survived a 69 day ordeal underground and were just rescued last month. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals last night and some deets about the show itself:

A woman whose group has rescued more than 12,000 women and girls from sex slavery has been named the 2010 CNN Hero of the Year. Anuradha Koirala was chosen by the public in an online poll that ran for eight weeks on CNN.com. CNN’s Anderson Cooper revealed the result at the conclusion of the fourth annual “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute.” “Human trafficking is a crime, a heinous crime, a shame to humanity,” Koirala said earlier in the evening after being introduced as one of the top 10 CNN Heroes of 2010. “I ask everyone to join me to create a society free of trafficking. We need to do this for all our daughters.” Koirala was introduced by actress Demi Moore, who along with her husband, Ashton Kutcher, created DNA, The Demi and Ashton Foundation, which aims to eliminate child sex slavery worldwide … “Since 1993, she has helped rescue more than 12,000 women and girls. Through her organization Maiti Nepal, she has provided more than a shelter for these girls and young women, she has created a home. It is a place for them to heal, go to school, learn a skill, and for some who are infected with HIV/AIDS, it is the place where they can spend their days surrounded by love.” Koirala will receive $100,000 to continue her work with Maiti Nepal, in addition to the $25,000 awarded to each of the top 10 Heroes honored Saturday night … The show opened with a salute to the 33 Chilean miners and five of the people who rescued them last month after the miners spent 69 days underground. “For 69 days we were amazed by these 33 brave miners,” Cooper said in welcoming the miners onto the Shrine stage. “Their ordeal was unthinkable; their rescue, unbelievable. No one has ever been trapped underground so deep for so long and survived. “They endured a nightmare, experienced a miracle, and in the end became each others’ brothers and heroes. On behalf of CNN Heroes, we salute all 33 Chilean miners.” After the miners sang the Chilean national anthem, two of them — speaking through a translator and holding the Chilean flag — expressed their appreciation. “We want to thank the world, and we want to thank God for your prayers,” Luis Urzua told the audience in Spanish. “Our families suffered. Our children suffered, too. But thanks to the prayers of the whole world, we could come out of this difficulty,” Mario Sepulveda added. “Some of our rescuers are here with us tonight,” Urzua said. “Thank you for bringing us home. You are our heroes.”

John Legend, Bon Jovi and Sugarland were among the musicians who performed on the show last night and celebrities including Halle Berry, Kid Rock, LL Cool J, Aaron Eckhart and the folks pictured above were on hand to present awards. I’m always so impressed and SO inspired by the real life heroes who are honored by CNN every year. There are so many unsung heroes who work tirelessly on a daily basis to help others and they do so happily and without any desire to be recognized for their efforts. It is very cool that this annual tribute seeks out those people and honors them, not necessarily for their personal glory but because those people shine as a beacon of human kindness and selfless inspiration. I’ll be tuning in this Thursday night to see these amazing people honored and I will surely be giving thanks for all the amazing work they do.

Detroit Rock City
Demi Moore & Gerard Butler Do Karaoke In Detroit

Taking a break from filming their new films titled LOL and Machine Gun Preacher respectively, actors Demi Moore and Gerard Butler showed up at Rockstarz Karaoke Bar & Grill in Detroit, MI last week to do a bit of drinkin’ and singin’ with the fine folks in the Motor City. Here are a few photos of Demi and Gerard doing their thing on stage and some deets from the very fun-sounding night:

It must have been quite a surprise for the punters at Rockstarz Karaoke bar Detroit. There they were enjoying a drink and a sing-song when who should pop in but Demi Moore, Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan. The trio of stars were on a night off from filming in the city, although they are actually working on different sets, and soon took to the stage to entertain the clientele. Demi, 47, is in town to film LOL: Laugh out loud, alongside Miley Cyrus and Ashley Greene. Meanwhile Gerard and Michelle are filming biopic drama Machine Gun Preacher. The film is based on the life of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing biker who found God and became a crusader for Sudanese children who had been forced into becoming soldiers. The stars wowed the crowd with their renditions of ACDC’s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ and Sheryl Crow’s ‘All I Wanna Do’ last week. Gerard even played fan and took pictures with his phone of Demi and Michelle as they sang. Demi and Gerard, 40, have been friends since they made a visit to Haiti together in April on behalf of Artists For Peace And Justice, a charity with which they are both affiliated.

Firstly, how much do I LOVE that all the celebs are showing up to film their new movies in my beloved Detroit, MI?! As y’all know, Scream 4 is filming in the Detroit Metropolitan Area and I know that Hugh Jackman was in town filming a movie of his own. Now we got Demi, Gerard, Ashley Greene and Miley Cyrus hanging out in Motown … what a great boost for the city that I love so much. I really love that there are so many movies being filmed in Detroit Rock City. I’m certain the fine folks at Rockstarz Karaoke were happy to welcome Demi and Gerard into their establishment … here’s hoping more celebs make their way to Detroit to film new movies. Who knows, maybe Detroit will become the new Hollywood ;)

When the Saints go marching in!
The New Orleans Saints Win Super Bowl XLIV

Congratulations goes out to the New Orleans Saints today who, as I’m sure you are well aware, won Super Bowl XLIV last night at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL. Props go out to the Indianapolis Colts for playing a strong game and for taking an early lead (making it look like they were going to blow out the Saints) but, in the end, the New Orleans Saints pulled off the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history and ended up winning their FIRST Super Bowl Championship ever by a final score of 31 – 17:

The New Orleans Saints almost left when their city flooded and their stadium had been turned into a shelter, a disaster seeming to provide the perfect escape route for a team in search of a better stadium and a bigger market. Displaced and disheartened, the Saints haltingly returned to a repaired Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. And a team so awful that its fans used to wear bags on their heads came to symbolize and be embraced by a battered but rebuilding community. On Sunday, with a quarterback who had hitched his career to resurrecting the Saints and with a team that played nearly flawlessly, the Saints gave New Orleans a reason to do what it does better than any other American city: celebrate. In the franchise’s first Super Bowl, the Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts, 31-17, sending New Orleanians into the streets for a party. “Who Dat?” Saints fans ask about which opponent might beat their team. Now they have their answer: nobody. The Saints are the N.F.L.’s champions, after 42 seasons of futility. Confetti fell on the Saints here, but back in New Orleans, where Mardi Gras begins in less than two weeks, Bourbon Street erupted in joy, four and a half years after the city was nearly engulfed by despair when the levees broke. “Louisiana, by way of New Orleans, is back,” said the Saints’ owner, Tom Benson, clutching the Lombardi Trophy. “And it shows the whole world.” The play that sealed the victory, a comeback from a 10-0 deficit, came with a little more than three minutes to play at the expense of a New Orleans native. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, a son of the beloved former Saints quarterback Archie Manning, was intercepted by Saints cornerback Tracy Porter — a Louisiana native, too — when the Saints blitzed. Porter jumped in front of the intended receiver and returned the interception 74 yards for a touchdown that gave the Saints their winning margin. “Four years ago, whoever thought this would be happening?” quarterback Drew Brees said. “Eighty-five percent of the city was under water. All of the residents evacuated across the county. Most people not knowing if New Orleans could ever come back or if the organization or team would ever come back” … Brees was the M.V.P. of the game, but Saints Coach Sean Payton made the most valuable — and the gutsiest — decision. With the Saints trailing by 4 points and kicking off to the Colts to open the second half, Payton called for an onside kick. The Saints call the play “ambush,” and that was what it was. Colts players admitted after the game that they did not see it coming. Thomas Morstead, the kicker on the play, said: “I wasn’t worried. I was terrified” … At long last, the Saints have arrived, and they brought New Orleans back with them.

What a game, eh? As I said yesterday before the game got underway, I was not rooting for any particular team because I didn’t have a vested interest in either side winning but you gotta admit, it’s pretty sweet to see the people of New Orleans cheering in the streets just 4 years after their city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The Saints‘ win was well-deserved, they played hard … make smart moves … and, in the end, proved they were the best team of the year. After the jump, check out some of the celebs who were in the hiz at Super Bowl XLIV last night …

Puma Town
Demi Moore Does ‘W’ Magazine

Demi Moore, self-proclaimed puma (don’t call her a cougar), is featured on the cover and in the pages of the new issue of W magazine. In her coverstory interview, Demi talks about getting older, her status as Queen of the Pumas and does some promo for her new films Happy Tears and The Joneses. Here is Demi‘s W cover and some excerpts from her coverstory interview:

In the December issue of W magazine, the seemingly ageless Demi Moore, 47, talks about everything from being labeled a “cougar” for her relationship with Ashton Kutcher, 31, to aging in Hollywood. The former box office star, who stars in two upcoming indie films “Happy Tears” and “The Joneses” — and is also the face of the new Helena Rubinstein women’s fragrance “All You’ve Ever Wanted,” — says getting older has affected her acting career. “The frustrating part is that the type of roles I’d be interested in are not really coming to me,” says Moore, whose buff physique helped her attain roles like “G.I. Jane” and “Striptease.” “I hate to say it’s a function of my age—but yes, I think in some ways it is. The majority of [female] roles are geared between 25 and 35.” And about her “cougar” title, Moore prefers “puma.” “I’m certainly not the first person to be in a relationship with a younger man, but somehow I was plucked out as a bit of a poster girl,” says Moore, who first met Kutcher six and a half years ago. “I don’t know why that is. But I just kind of step back sometimes and say, ‘There is some reason, and what is it that I have to share in a positive way?”

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Demi Moore out on the promo trail promoting a new project. To be honest, I can’t think of a thing that she’s done since she appeared in Charlies Angels 2: Full Throttle. And, hello, she still looks amazing. Call her a puma or a cougar or whatever … she is a beauty, thru and thru. After the jump, check out a few more photos of Demi Moore in the new issue of W magazine …

New BFFs
Kylie Minogue Plays Tour Guide For Demi Moore

Here is a cute picture of apparent new BFFs Kylie Minogue and Demi Moore as they were snapped hangin’ out together in Paris, France last night. Apparently, Kylie has been showing Demi around town and the ladies have seemingly become fast friends. Whether the new BFFs bonded over a true friendship or just their levels of celebrity is not known but they do make a very cute couple, I think:

In France to launch her advertising campaign as the face of the new Helena Rubenstein fragrance Wanted, [Demi Moore] enlisted Kylie Minogue’s help for some local advice on the city’s restaurants. The two women were spotted in black and gold outfits and killer heels as they dined at the new Coste restaurant in the St Germain district of Paris. They were also joined by Demi’s youngest daughters Scout, 17, and Tallulah Belle, 15. It isn’t known how long they have been friendly, but they appear to have plenty to talk about after dining together twice in three days. On Monday night, Kylie joined Demi, 46, and her daughters at celebrity favourite Le Stresa. The following day, Demi was seen enjoying a private visit to the Louvre gallery. Accompanied by her bodyguards, the actress couldn’t resist the urge to take a photograph of Leonardo Da Vinci’s masterpiece Mona Lisa – even though photos are forbidden. She then posted the unauthorised holiday snap on her Twitter micro-blogging page. She wrote: ‘Ah… the Mona Lisa.’ Addressing husband Ashton Kutcher, who is currently at home in the U.S., she added: ‘This one is for you baby! Direct from the Louvre. Eros waking his love Psyche.’ On her Twitter page, Demi also admitted she wanted to release her own fragrance, adding: ‘Hopefully soon.’ Since splitting from Olivier in February 2007, Kylie has often returned to the capital to spend time with his dog Sheba, who she has described as ‘the love of her life’. She is now happily dating a Spaniard, Andres Velencoso. Demi’s trip to Paris is her second visit to France this year. She accompanied Ashton to the French Riviera in March during the filming of his new move Five Killers.

In case you are interested, you can click HERE to see Demi‘s unauthorized mobile phone photo of the famed Mona Lisa painting. I can’t say that I blame Demi for wanting to befriend Kylie … she’s an absolute doll and I imagine she is as sweet in person as she seems in persona. While I doubt that these ladies will be joined at the hip from here on out it’s always nice to see new friends in the making. I know I’m hoping to become friends with Kylie when she comes to the US on her first North American tour this Fall … hey, it could happen.

@aplusk becomes the first Twitter user to have 1,000,000 followers
Ashton Kutcher Beats CNN To 1 Million Twitter Followers

For the past few days, Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) has been in a “Twitter War” with CNN (@cnnbrk) to see which user of the micro-blogging service could reach the hallowed level of 1 million followers first … and last night, a winner was determined and Ashton Kutcher came out on top. From what I understand, Ashton managed to break the million follower mark ahead of CNN by just 12,000 to win the competition … and in celebration, Ashton is making a donation of 10,000 mosquito nets to the charity Malaria No More (tho, I gotta say, a donation of 1,000,000 nets would’ve been more apropos, don’t you think?). Here are some photos of Ashton and his wife Demi Moore (@mrskutcher) celebrating the win last night and some deets about the Twitter War:

Take that CNN. Ashton Kutcher, 31, has become the first Twitter user (@aplusk) to reach more than one million “followers.” For the past few days, he’d been locked in a race with CNN’s breaking news feed — (@cnnbrk), but just before midnight Thursday he became the first “Twitter millionaire.” Around 1:30 he tweeted, “Victory is ours!!!!!!!!” and posted a twitpic of the win. Kutcher says he’s donating 10,000 mosquito nets to the medical charity Malaria No More to celebrate, and the video-game publisher Electronic Arts says the millionth follower will become a character in “The Sims.” Plus, there’s the promised ding-dong-ditch of Ted Turner’s Atlanta home to look forward to! Stay tuned for his appearance on Oprah Friday, where he plans to teach Winfrey how to Twitter.

If anything, this really goes to show how quickly Twitter has crossed over from being a fun new online social networking site to THE most talked about new fad on the Internets. I only hope that all of this Twitter saturation doesn’t kill all the fun that goes along with the service. I had a great time posting tweets on my Twitter profile (@trentvanegas) last night from the Britney Spears concert at the Staples Center. It’s really fun sharing thoughts, observations and photos in real time with anyone interested anywhere in the world … especially among friends. Now Ashton Kutcher has 1,000,000 people following him to read/see whatever he has to put out there … here’s hoping he uses this new power for good rather than evil. Congrats Ashton, I’m not sure what this accomplishment wins you but I suppose the bragging rights of being the first Twitter user to have 1 million followers should be enough to keep you pretty happy for a while … at least until the next Internet fad comes along.
