‘Star Trek’ Boldly Relaunches With A New Vision Of The Future

The TV Guide
Friday, May 1st, 2009

So … last night David and I were invited to attend the Hollywood premiere of the new JJ Abrams-directed Star Trek film at Grauman’s Chinese Theater and we JUMPED at the opportunity. As a long time Trek fan, I was very anxious to finally see the movie that I have heard so many good things about. I am happy to report that all the hype and the great reviews are absolutely justified … I loved this film. There is so much for old Trek fans to feast on in this film but also much for new fans (or those who aren’t even fans all) to enjoy as well. I suspect that this film will do very well with everyone … it’s got movie blockbuster written all over it. If you wish to remain unspoiled by my review, I suggest you skip over the next part and just go down to see my pics from the premiere after party instead:

Man … where to begin. The story is really superb. The film opens with an action sequence that really sets the pace of the film and clues you in that Abrams means business … he is intent on revamping the entire series into a new, modern version that remains true to the classic series while injecting enough excitement to make it all fresh again. There is action, there is humor and there are pretty fantastic acting performances that are sure to please pretty much everyone who sees the film. Each character gets to shine in this film and each one is infused with enough of their classic mannerisms and catch-phrases to appease the most ardent Trekkie in the audience. I will reveal that a warp core does get ejected somewhere along the way … it wouldn’t be a Star Trek movie if not.

Now, the one thing that I’m not sure that I like. AND THIS IS THE SPOILERY PART SO DON’T READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO REMAIN UNSPOILED! As we should all know by now, JJ Abrams loves to play with time travel … and time travel features heavily in this film. Without going into any details, I will say that a time shift alters the Star Trek timeline and the events of this film break off and head in a different direction than the timeline we know from the classic Star Trek series. This is why I don’t think the movie should be marketed as a prequel. History is changed and a new alternate timeline is created. To me, the movie is more of a sequel to all of the previous TV series and movies that we’ve already seen. That said, this new alternate timeline opens up WIDE the ability to create entirely new stories and wholly new adventures without having to worry about staying true to the original Trek timeline. Again, I’m not sure how I feel about this exactly. There are major changes in this film that drastically alter the Trek universe. I’ll be very interested to hear what others think about this after they see the film (so, please, feel free to email me when you see this film).

But, as I said, I absolutely loved the film overall. Zachary Quinto’s Spock is excellent and he is, IMHO, the star of the film. I was just so impressed … I’m dying to see the movie again already.

After the movie, we made our way to the afterparty that was held off site from the theater and we got down to celebrating the film. After the jump, check out a bunch of photos of some celebs posing in a fun Star Trek photobooth and see some of the cool folks I got to meet last night …

Tori Spelling Releases Her 2nd Book, ‘Mommywood’

Also makes her long-awaited return to '90210'
Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

When Tori Spelling isn’t feuding in public with her estranged mother Candy Spelling, she is bizzy throwing book release parties … like she did in LA last night in celebration of the release of her second book Mommywood. As you may recall, we got our first look at the cover artwork for Mommywood back in February but today is the day that the book is available for purchase. Here are a few photos from Tori’s book release party last night:

Tori Spelling revealed a dramatically thinner look at the launch of her new book in Hollywood last night. But the actress who has lost even more weight since the birth of her baby last year appeared to be having trouble holding up the weighty tome. Tori arrived with husband Dean McDermott, son Liam, 2, and baby daughter Stella, 10 months. Dressed in an emerald green babydoll dress, the 35-year-old cut a rather sinewy figure compared to the healthier look she unveiled back in January when she unveiled her post-baby body. The mother of two, who gave birth to Stella in June, has returned to the programme that made her name, Beverly Hills 90210 playing Donna Martin, the same character she played on late father Aaron Spelling’s original TV show.

YES! In addition to the release of Tori’s second book, today is also the day that Tori returns as Donna Martin on tonight’s new episode of 90210. After many months of hemming and hawing (and unsuccessful attempts to work out a financial deal that satisfied everyone), Tori reprises the role that made her famous in tonight’s new ep. While I’m sure that many folks are excited to have a new book to read from Tori Spelling (like my friend Mike, who I’m sure has already ran out to buy his copy), I’m more excited about seeing Tori on 90210 tonight. Because David and I will be flying back to LA on JetBlue, we will be able to watch the show when it airs on The CW tonight. Woot!! Are any of y’all excited for this book or are you more amped about Donna Martin’s return to 90210?

The 2009 Bravo ‘A-List Awards’ Are Handed Out

With nary an A-Lister in sight
Monday, April 6th, 2009

Bravo TV hosted the 2009 A-List Awards at The Orpheum Theater here in LA last night and they managed to attract a whole lotta D-Listers (and lower) to the event. The second annual award show (completely made up by Bravo TV to hand out awards to the the reality TV “stars” they created themselves) was, once again, hosted by Kathy Griffin and seeks to honor “the best in food, fashion, beauty, design and pop culture”. Here are a few pics of some of the supposed A-Listers who came out for the event yesterday:

Um, let’s be real here … there ain’t nothing A-List about the A-List Awards. How much do you wanna bet that Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan grabbed the closest scantily-clad woman in sight so that he would get photographed by the assembled media folks (and how much do you want to bet that Tila Tequila thought she was posing for a pic with Uncle Fester from The Addams Family)? I got $10. I mean, I get that Bravo is trying to start something akin to the MTV Video Music Awards with their little show but I’m afraid it ain’t gonna happen. The network boldly nominated some bona fide A-List people (David Beckham, Brad Pitt, Michelle Obama, Tina Fey) but when all you get on your red carpet is Pug Dilton and Aubrey O’Day, well, mebbe it’s time to change the name of your awards show … perhaps the A-Hole Awards? I keed, I keed … but seriously …. they should stop. That being said, I do love Kathy Griffin and if they keep getting her to host, I’ll prolly watch it in reruns or something. Or, you know, not.

Tori Spelling Plans To Spill Again

She, apparently, hasn't pissed off enough people
Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Tori Spelling and her hubby Dean McDermott were on hand at the Avalon hotel in Beverly Hills, CA on Thursday night to celebrate the success of her memoir sTORItelling. You may recall this memoir angered a few people in Hollywood — not the least of which was Tori’s former Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty who claimed that Tori outright lied in the tome about their BH, 90210 days — which lead to big sales at the cash register. So, natch, Tori is planning another book:

What’s life like for a new mom in 90210? Tori Spelling is ready to dish. The actress, 35, is reportedly planning a new book – tentatively titled Mommywood, which will focus on her life as a Hollywood princess-turned-parent, according to publishers Simon & Schuster. Spelling’s debut effort this year, sTORI Telling, spent seven weeks on The New York Times best-seller list – and included accounts of her ill-starred first wedding, her father Aaron’s death and the roller-coaster relationship with her mother, Candy. The new book, already listed on Amazon.com and scheduled to hit the shelves in April 2009, is expected to focus on the birth and growing pains of 1-year-old son Liam and newborn Stella.

I think it’s wise that Tori keeps the focus on her family and off the Hollywood folk themselves … to be honest, I contend that her book prolly had something to do with her getting axed from appearing on 90210. Think about it, producers were prolly desperate to get Shannen Doherty on the show after they already secured both Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling. Once Shannen started bargaining, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned into a “me or her” scenario … Shannen got in, Tori got cut. Now, this is ALL conjecture on my part … but it makes sense. To think that the producers wouldn’t or couldn’t pay Tori Spelling as much as they are paying Shannen and Jennie is absurd. But … you never know. In any event, Tori seems pleased with her book success and I guess that’s all well and good for her … but I bet she’d much prefer the limelight that Shannen and Jennie are enjoying right now from their connection to the very hot 90210.

Liam Aaron McDermott Celebrates His 1st Birthday

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Here are a few pics from the Monkey-themed first birthday party that Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott threw for their first born child Liam Aaron a few weeks ago, which will be featured on the couple’s reality TV show Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood premiering on Oxygen tonight at 10pm. Liam’s party was attended by a few celebrity friends including Loni Anderson, Denise Richards, Carmen Electra and Zachary Quinto … check out the pics:

As you can see in the photos, the party took place before Tori gave birth to her second child Stella Doreen on June 10th but these pics from Liam’s birthday party have never been seen before. Tori planned the fête herself and I understand that no expense was spared to ensure that the party was as phat as possible … hello, the monkey birthday cake is bigger than Liam is — and he’s a big boy! Now that we know that Tori Spelling will eventually be returning to 90210 as Donna Martin on the new CW TV show later on this Fall, my interest in her has been renewed. I’ve been hearing from a few Pink readers that Tori and Dean’s show on Oxygen is pretty good (and you wouldn’t believe how big a Tori Spelling fan my friend Mike is) so I think I’ll be tuning in this season so see what’s up … if only to see how much of that ginormous cake gets eaten.

Meet Stella Doreen McDermott

She's an 'OK!' kid
Friday, July 4th, 2008

There’s been a lot of buzz going around this week surrounding the new Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off TV series that is set to debut on The CW this Fall. Once the first rumblings started up that Shannen Doherty would be reprising her role as Brenda Walsh on the show things hit a fever pitch as excitement over the show took off. Then we got our first look at what the newly remodeled Peach Pit diner will look like and, well, it’s been a crazy week for fans of BH, 90210. We know that Tori Spelling will also be reprising her role as Donna Martin on the new 90210 but it was announced that her debut on the show would be pushed back into the season due to her recuperation period caused by the recent birth of her baby Stella. And so, let’s take a closer look at the little doll who may be effing with Tori’s career plans but is still cute as a button in her very first OK! magazine photospread:

Almost one year to the day their son Liam was born, Tori Spelling and hubby Dean McDermott got the surprise of their lives when they discovered they were expecting baby number two! Even more exciting, the couple … found out they were having a little girl, something that Tori says she thought she would never experience. Now the couple is talking only to OK! with an exclusive interview about their joyful journey. “She’s a miracle,” Spelling tells OK!. “I was on one pill and wasn’t feeling well, so I went off of it. Two days later, the doctor put me on another, and on that one day, we conceived. It was meant to be!” As OK! exclusively reported, the couple welcomed daughter Stella Doreen into the world on June 9. The infant weighed in at a dainty 6 lbs. 11 oz. and had a full head of beautiful black hair. “My first thought was, ‘My god, she’s so beautiful,’” Tori gushes. “My second thought was, ‘Oh my god, she has black hair! Where did that come from?’ [laughs] Liam has blonde hair and is very fair. She was born with black hair, very tan.” Tori continues, “I never thought I’d have a daughter. Dean’s first child [Jack] is a boy and then we had Liam and I thought, ‘Because I’m so girly-girly, I’ll have all boys.’ ” Dean agrees, adding, “When I saw Stella for the first time, I just bawled my face off out of pure joy. I’ve always heard that there’s nothing like that bond between father and daughter. There is nothing like it — you feel it that moment. It hit me like a ton of bricks. Little boys are awesome. They’re just like a little you. But having a little girl is something else. As a man, you just lose it.”

AWWW … they do make a cute little family (tho, it’s interesting about that baby girl being born with dark hair … HMMM). While I’m not at all interested in any of the reality shows that Tori and Dean have got going on on Oxygen, I am very excited about Tori’s return to 90210. I am very intrigued by what they are going to do with her character … will Brian Austin Green be reprising his role as David Silver, Donna Martin’s main man? Of all of the BH, 90210 men, he’s the one I see most prolly making a return to the show (who knows if Luke Perry, Jason Priestley or Ian Ziering were even asked?). In any event, I hope that Tori enjoys her recuperation time with her newborn daughter Stella … and that she gets back to work soon, this 90210 thing is a priority!

Tori Spilling

Tori Spelling gave birth to her second child at 3:13PM PT today … bringing forth into the world a beautiful, bouncing baby girl:

Tori Spelling and husband Dean McDermott welcomed their second child, a daughter, on Monday, PEOPLE has confirmed. Stella Doreen McDermott was born at 3:13 p.m. in a Los Angeles hospital via C-section. She weighed 6 lbs., 8 oz. and was 19 3/4 inches long, a rep for Spelling says.
