THE party to be seen at
‘Vanity Fair’ Magazine Celebrates The 82nd Annual Academy Awards

Outside of the Academy Awards themselves, and the accompanying Governor’s Ball, there is no bigger event on Oscar night than the annual Vanity Fair Oscar Party hosted by VF editor in chief Graydon Carter. Here are a few photos from the red carpet arrivals at the Sunset Tower, the site of this year’s affair, along with some deets from the LA Times about what went down at the soirée:

Although the winners of the 82nd Academy Awards might have been a roll of the dice, Vanity Fair’s post-Oscar party is a sure thing. This year was no exception. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard Held at West Hollywood’s Sunset Tower Hotel, nominees, winners and celebrity guests joined VF editor in chief Graydon Carter for the annual exclusive fete. Young, old, werewolf and human peppered the gathering — from Joan and Jackie Collins to Taylor Lautner and Zac Efron. Meryl Streep perched on a couch, chatting up pregnant Amy Adams, while Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard huddled in a corner talking to pal Carey Mulligan. Michael Bay loomed near Jessica Simpson, Marc Anthony, Heidi Klum and Harvey Weinstein in the Terrace Room. Charlize Theron and her mother, Gerda, bypassed Ed Norton and Shauna Robertson to mingle with Suzanne Somers, Joe and Nick Jonas, Tyler Perry, Russell Brand and Katy Perry and Sean Penn. A very formal Giovanni Ribisi spoke at length with a casually dressed Beck; nearby, Oscar producer Adam Shankman talked the telecast with Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt. Sarah Silverman introduced herself to Spike Lee, while Vera Wang danced to Michael Jackson’s “PYT” with her Olympic medalist muse, Evan Lysacek. The night’s big winner, Kathryn Bigelow, with her “Hurt Locker” star Jeremy Renner, was greeted with unanimous applause from the likes of a radiant Gabrielle Union, Judd Apatow, Chevy Chase, Lee Daniels, Natalie Portman, Common, Kid Rock, Oscar host Steve Martin, Robert Downey Jr., Macaulay Culkin, Rachel McAdams, best actress nominee Gabourey Sidibe and Bill Maher. Exes Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish kept their distance, while Jennifer Lopez revealed a quick change into a black gown to husband Marc Anthony. Efron kept his “High School Musical” gal Vanessa Hudgens warm on the chilly patio, while Keanu Reeves and Cameron Diaz were offered In n’ Out burgers on silver platters. Jesse James and Sandra Bullock This year’s best actress winner, Sandra Bullock, made an appearance with her husband, Jesse James, both eager to greet Ryan Reynolds (sans bride Scarlett Johannson). Oscar winners Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Sandy Powell and T-Bone Burnett were in also attendance.

Juicy, juicy … I believe this is the first time that Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish have been at the same public event since their split last month. I guess things are not amicable between the ex-lovers. The Vanity Fair party is really the event to attend after the Oscars. There are many other parties to attend, including Elton John‘s annual event, but anyone who is anyone is Hollywood makes it a point to show up at the VF event. I’m glad to see that some of the ladies changed up their looks from the Oscar red carpet to the VF red carpet … it’s a shame that Charlie Theron didn’t change out of her rose-budded boobie dress because it was just a WORLD of no. Sounds like this year’s VF party was a good time.

Easy pickin's
David Beckham & Charlize Theron Help Select The 2010 World Cup Draw

David Beckham and Charlize Theron were on hand in Cape Town, South Africa this weekend to participate in the random draw to select the match-ups for the 2010 World Cup soccer championship tournament. Because soccer (or fútbol) is such a huge sport in most of the world, the World Cup Draw is a major televised event … as a result, the big guns had to be brought in to help make the selections. The US team was selected to go up against the Algerian team, the Slovenian team and the English team … which means that if Becks gets picked to be on the English team (as he is dying to) then he will be playing against some of his US soccer teammates. Here are a few photos from the World Cup Draw event and some deets about the results:

English football fans will feel they got off lightly this evening after their team was handed a relatively easy group for next year’s World Cup Finals. At the star-studded draw in Cape Town, England was placed in Group C with USA, Algeria and Slovenia. Bookmakers William Hill immediately installed England as second favourites after their easy draw. The draw means that if David Beckham is picked, he will come up against some of his old teammates when England face USA in their first game in Rustenberg, around 60 miles north-west of Johannesburg, on June 12. The top two teams in the group progress to the second round and so England supporters will be hopeful that their team will make it through unscathed – at least until they meet possible opponents Germany. Hollywood star Charlize Theron oversaw the draw at Cape Town’s packed 20,000-seater International Convention Centre while David Beckham – England’s figurehead for their 2018 World Cup bid – and England manager Fabio Capello looked on. Beckham, who is still hoping he will be part of Fabio Capello’s squad for South Africa, said: ‘It is a very interesting group. They are all hard games and it’s very exciting to be a part of it.’ England beat Slovenia in a friendly at Wembley last March, when Frank Lampard and Jermain Defoe scored in a 2-1 win. And Algeria needed a play-off win over Egypt to reach South Africa, and so they are widely viewed as the weakest of the five African teams that qualified. Former England manager Terry Venables said: ‘They are going to say “there are no easy games” and of course, that is true, but it’s as good a draw as we could have expected. You could have hand-picked that so we’ve got to be very satisfied.’ More than 15,000 people gathered in Cape Town at big screens set up in the city while thousands more gathered around the convention centre where the draw took place. Capello had already said before the draw that he was not worried about which teams England was drawn against. ‘I don’t worry about that, ‘ he said. ‘You have to play against all of the teams at some point, but of course if you play against the best teams it’s not so easy to pass the first round. If we want to win you have to play against all of the teams. It is not important which team we have to play in the group.’ At the main party venue, Cape Town’s trendy Long Street, local and foreign fans, many with flags of their favourite teams painted on their faces, thronged the bars and restaurants. Former South African president Nelson Mandela sent a poignant video message to welcome the 32 World Cup teams to the host nation. His two-minute address was pre-recorded ahead of the Fifa group match draw ceremony in Cape Town. Speaking to the audience on huge screens, he said: ‘In Africa, soccer enjoys great popularity and has a particular place in the hearts of people. ‘This is why it is so important that the Fifa World Cup will for the first time ever be hosted on the African continent in 2010. We feel privileged and humbled that South Africa have been given the singular honour of being that African host country.’ More than 250million people in 200 countries watched the draw live.

Soooo … yeah. The World Cup is the largest world-wide sporting event and it looks like it’s gonna be a doozy next year. I recall when Becks played in the World Cup last time and it was fun following his exploits on the field. But since he then joined the LA Galaxy and started playing here on a regular basis, the novelty of watching him play soccer wore off a little bit. Now I’m really looking forward to the US Team SHOCKING THE WORLD by winning the 2010 World Cup!!! Well, okay … that prolly won’t happen … but I’ll be rooting for them to do their very best and who knows what will happen. I know there are a great many people that are superexcited for the 2010 World Cup … I think it’ll be fun to see how the whole thing plays out. Go USA!!

Celebs come out for a £1 billion resort opening in the United Arab Emirates
The Atlantis Palm Opens In Dubai

Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton, Mary-Kate Olsen and about 1,997 other celebs made their way out to Dubai, United Arab Emirates for the official launch extravaganza for the new £1 billion luxury resort the Atlantis Palm on Palm Jumeirah Island earlier this week. The party itself cost £20 million and it really showed. Here are a few pics of some of the red carpet arrivals from the Atlantis Palm launch party and some deets on the party itself:

The credit crunch may be biting … but there was little sign of parsimony in Dubai [Thursday] night. The world’s rich and famous gathered for the most expensive private party ever thrown – costing some £20 million – to open Atlantis Palm Jumeirah, a £1 billion resort on a man-made island shaped like a palm tree in the Persian Gulf. Two thousand film stars, popstars, supermodels and billionaires were flown in from around the world for the all-expenses paid one-night party with many of them staying for four days. The highlight last night was a one-off gig by Kylie Minogue and her 113-strong dance troupe on the beach. Apart from getting a free holiday, Miss Minogue was also paid £1.5million for a 10-song 45-minute medley of her hits – which works out at some £33,333 a minute …

The gig was followed at midnight local time by a 1million-rocket firework display with 100 computer-guided rockets costing £7million which was seven times bigger than the largest display to date – for the Beijing Olympics …

They were no ordinary fireworks of course – each one being a radio-controlled 27-inch shell with an on-board microcomputer to direct its flight. The display, which was visible from space, was also filmed by a squadron of helicopters hovering at 12,000ft and beamed on giant TV HD screens on the beach. Miss Minogue, 40, arrived at the lavish party dressed in a pink and black floral chiffon gown with flowing train and her blonde hair in a curly short hairdo. Speaking on Sky News, just two hours before she was due to go on stage, an excited Kylie said: “It’s staggering. I guess more is more here and they have done a great job. My room’s very nice. It’s a different set list to the tour I’m doing at the moment. It’s an edited show especially for tonight.” The 40-year-old star remained tight-lipped about how much she was earning for her set, she said: “I can’t tell you how much pocket money I get, it goes straight in my piggy bank.” Speaking about the hotel’s potential, she added: “I think there’s a lot of people who love this kind of thing you get sun and everything you could wish for. My crew and dancers have been having a great time.” Guests included filmstars such as Robert De Niro, Charlize Theron, Denzil Washington, Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan, supermodels Agyness Deyn, Petra Nemcova and Yasmin Le Bon, musicans Janet Jackson, Lily Allen and Shirley Bassey, sports legends like Michael Jordan and Boris Becker and some local royalty – the Royal Family of Dubai … Oprah Winfrey bagged the most exclusive £25,000-a-night suite high up on a bridge suspended between the resort’s two towers. Yet when she pulled out, the scramble for the suite was eventually won a man many Britons may have never heard of – Shahrukh Khan – who is apparently the ‘Tom Cruise of Bollywood’ and as such the most famous filmstar in Middle East. Robert De Niro – a partner in the Nobu restaurant chain which has a site in the resort – had to make do with a £15,000 presidential suite. That left filmstars Lindsay Lohan and Charlize Theron with £10,000 a night Lost Chambers suites submerged alongside one of the world’s largest aquariums in the depths of the Atlantis resort, each with a truly jaw-dropping bedroom view of 65,000 sharks, rays and fish. No one paid for an air ticket to get there. The travel bill alone was estimated to be £3 million. Yesterday, the starry crowd spent the day riding camels, stroking dolphins and trying out the resort’s giant waterpark. A cocktail reception last night was followed by dinner on the beach, Miss Minogue’s show and they the fireworks. Though Dubai is mainly a ‘dry’ country, there was not much evidence of that at the soiree with some 1,000 bottles of Veuvre Cliquot champagne being thrown back. All of that drink was presumably needed to wash down the 1.7 metric tonnes of lobster that was eaten, 4,000 oysters, 3,000 kilos of smoked salmon and 5,000 portions of the best sushi – all prepared by 500 chefs and served by 1,000 waiters.

Ye gods! Talk about excess. It never ceases to amaze me how economic strain can take its toll on so many people thruout the world and, yet, celebs never seem to feel the pinch. Forget the millions of starving and dying people suffering each and every day, the rich and powerful live extravagant lives that most people can’t even dream of. It really sounds like a spectacular event but the amount of excess is pretty staggering. I’m not hating, I’m just … boggled. Yeah.
