Does This Mean the 'Buffy' Reboot is Dunzo?
The Writer Of The ‘Buffy’ Remake Film Has Been Fired

In May of 2009 we learned that plans to produce a remake of the film Buffy the Vampire Slayer COMPLETELY WITHOUT THE BLESSING OR INVOLVMENT OF BUFFY CREATOR JOSS WHEDON were officially underway. In November of 2010, we learned that a screenwriter named Whit Anderson had been hired to pen the script for this planned Buffy remake. Today we learn from the LA Times that Anderson has been FIRED from the Buffy remake project … which is a good sign that the Buffy remake film might never see the light of day :D

‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Gets The Porn Parody Treatment

Welp … it was bound to happen sooner or later. The iconic TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting the porn parody treatment. That’s right folks, the characters that we all know and love — Buffy Summers, Angel, Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris and more — are featured in a XXX pornographic video that will lampoon the BtVS story. As you may recall, we previously learned of the porn parodies that are based on Batman, Saved By the Bell and Lindsay Lohan. Today, we get our first look at the alternate porno universe of Buffy the Vampire Layer.

Fictional Birthday Lurve
Buffy Summers, Of ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’, Turns 30 Years Old

Buffy Anne Summers, the fictional heroine of Joss Whedon‘s Buffy the Vampire Slayer series (which includes film, television, video games and comic books) turned 30 years old yesterday (or today, depending on whose timeline you believe) and CNN fells it is necessary to publicly celebrate the famous vampire slayer’s milestone birthday … and I would agree. Buffy Summers is deffo deserving of much BIRTHDAY LURVE.

"This is a sad, sad reflection on our times"
Joss Whedon Responds To News Of The ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Reboot

Yesterday afternoon we learned that the reboot of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer film is officially moving forward WITHOUT any input at all from creator Joss Whedon. Today, we get to hear from Joss himself about this Buffy reboot. Joss was asked to respond to the news of the planned Buffy reboot, which will be written by a woman named Whit Anderson, and this is what he had to say:

I’m glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film. This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

This is exactly the type of response you’d expect from Joss Whedon, yes he is obviously pissed and he makes that clear … but he manages to refrain from making any low blows and actually writes a body of text that will very likely be even better than the entire script for the planned Buffy reboot. I am still not calmed down from the news that Warner Bros. plans to move forward with an entirely new Joss Whedon-less Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. I’m not sure if folks understand but the new reboot will NOT feature any of Buffy‘s beloved friends! The studio owns the rights to the character Buffy Summers but they DO NOT own the rights to any of her friends … Giles, Willow, Xander, Cordelia, Angel, Spike and on and on. Those characters are owned by Joss Whedon and they will NOT be appearing in the big screen reboot that WB is planning. It is just unbelievable that they think they will be able to profit from Whedon‘s work without his influence in the film at all. Complete bullshit!

As a result of the Buffy reboot news, a Facebook fan campaign called I’m with JoJo (which is similar to the I’m with CoCo campaign that started up in support of Conan O’Brien earlier this year) has been launched in an effort to show Warner Bros. that NO ONE wants this Buffy reboot to happen without Joss Whedon‘s involvement. You can join the I’m with JoJo campaign HERE and let your voice be heard.

This is not the last we’ll be hearing of the Buffy reboot but it will likely be the last we hear from Whedon on the reboot … which means, this may be the last thing of import we hear about this travesty that just won’t die.

No Whedon? No Buffy.

"This is a completely new reboot"
The Whedon-less ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Reboot Is Officially In Production

In May of 2009 we learned the horrible news that plans were in the works to re-imagine the Buffy the Vampire Slayer saga in an entirely rebooted film that will have nothing to do with Buffy creator Joss Whedon. In December of 2009, Buffy alum Alyson Hannigan went on the record to call plans for a Whedon-less remake a “mistake” … and countless Buffy fans and Whedon faithful agree — me included. Today we learn that the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer script is being written by a woman named Whit Anderson, that the film has been picked up by Warner Bros. Studios and is scheduled for release in 2011 or 2012:

”I didn’t really watch much television at all, [says Whit Anderson], but I always watched ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ that was the one show I would watch when I got home. I just loved this character. I was the same age as Buffy and it was so rare to have a female lead character on TV in those days who was strong and capable and smart but also allowed to be feminine.” During its seven-season run, the beloved ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series put some fang into high-school melodrama long before “Twilight” made the undead all sparkly, and one big reason was the ability of the show’s creator, Joss Whedon, to put himself in the head of his female fans. Now we’ll find out if that rapport works in the other direction as the 29-year-old Anderson works on the script for a Warner Bros. feature-film “Buffy” reboot that is moving forward without Whedon. Anderson, with a chuckle, said she is ”fighting through” the script right now, but her concept has already engerized some key supporters. Charles Roven, one of the producers of “Batman Begins,” said his Atlas Entertainment signed on after he saw something special in Anderson’s tone and story. “Generally, I wouldn’t have said ‘Let’s revive this,’ but Whit’s take is pretty compelling and a lot of fun, and it’s interesting to see all of this re-imagined. This is a completely new reboot. Tone is extremely important and you want the audience to realize what is at stake and the peril is real, but at the same time what’s going on should be fun and inviting and keep everyone engaged. It needs to be relevant to today, too, and that is what Whit has found a way to do.” Roven added: “There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return…. While this is not your high-school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough and sexy as we all remember her to be.” The project has plenty of hurdles ahead, and there is no announced director, but Roven said hopes to see the film reach theaters in 2012 or perhaps even 2011 … Anderson knows that without Whedon … the most devoted fans of the old series will be keeping a skeptical eye on this nascent revival — and sharpening their wooden stakes. Anderson … said she will take the touchstones of the Whedon world but frame them in “a new story” that is very much of the moment. She cited Christopher Nolan’s revival of Batman as a supreme example of how a familiar character and revered mythology can be brought to the big screen with a vital new vision.

Firstly, I want to say that I do not blame Whit Anderson for taking up the task of writing the new Buffy script … I don’t think many people would turn down a job like that. BUT, I absolutely feel that any Buffy project that does not have any input, association or even blessing from Joss Whedon is just beyond blasphemous. What a slap in the face it must feel like to Joss to see his beloved creation totally taken over by strangers who will reboot his hard work so that they can repackage, sell and profit from it. I honestly couldn’t care less how creative, inventive or revolutionary this new Buffy is promised to be … she will be a pale copy of the already superior original. While I completely understand the need to move forward on a project that the powers that be believe will be a profitable venture, I can honestly say that I personally have ZERO interest in anything having to do with it. I don’t need a new Buffy. I don’t want a new Buffy. Without Joss Whedon‘s involvement, this new Buffy will NEVER be Buffy. I normally LOVE reboots and retellings of stories in new, inventive ways … but this feels so wrong. Without Joss, I’m just not interested.

How about you?

Movie Mania

Last night David and I decided to forgo all the craziness going on around town and stay in for a quite night on the couch … which, of course, meant a night at the movies! First up, I watched the 1984 film Red Dawn … then the 2003 film Party Monster … then the 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

I had only seen Red Dawn once before but I had forgotten most of it … it tells the fictional tale of a Soviet/Cuban invasion of the USA and the first months of World War III. It stars Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey and others as freedom fighter kids who fight back against the invading armies. It’s ridiculously cheesy but still a great movie. I remember seeing Party Monster (starring Seth Green and Macaulay Culkin) in the theater back in 2003. The film is outrageously fun … and while people mainly remember Macaulay performance, I have always been much more impressed with Seth‘s performance in the film. And the film soundtrack? OMG, it’s one of my faves of all time. I also saw Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the theater back in 1992 … I loved it then and I love it now. The world may know Sarah Michelle Geller as Buffy Summers but Kristy Swanson was the original Buffy and she kicked all kinds of ass in the original film. I don’t usually spend my Friday nights in front of the TV but last night was a fun exception.

Not sure what we’re doing tonight … there’s an Emmy party that we may attend but we’re still undecided. It’s such a nice day out, I think I’ll do something to enjoy it while I can. Happy Weekend, y’all!!

Jones Soda Releases ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Soda

Great news Buffy fans, Jones Soda has just announced the release of an amazing new line of their delicious soda drinks (Buffy’s Blue Bubblegum, Willow’s Green Apple Witch’s Brew, Giles’s Grape Potion and more) made in honor of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 comic book series. The soda drinks were unveiled at 2010 San Diego Comic-Con this week but they have also been made available for purchase by those of us who are not at Comic-Con this year. Here is what the Buffy Soda bottles will look like and some deets about the drinks themselves:

Jones Soda, purveryors of fine fantasy-themed beverages, such as Dungeons & Dragons and Magic the Gathering sodas (ahh! The taste of carbonated red mana!) have got a new vampiric brew on tap for you here at San Diego Comic-Con. Starting tomorrow morning, look for Jones Soda trucks driving around the Gaslamp district, dispensing Buffy The Vampire Slayer soda! … For more info on these beverages straight out of the Sunnydale High cafeteria vending machine, head to Jones Soda’s official site.

LOL!! How awesome is this? If HBO‘s True Blood can offer their own themed drink called Tru Blood then why can’t Buffy the Vampire Slayer have its own line of drinks? I’ve already placed my order for 2 packs of 12 bottles of this delicious-looking stuff … that way, I can drink some and save a few bottles for posterity. Yes, I know, I’m crazy ;) Are any of y’all planning on wrapping your lips around a Buffy Bot-tle of soda pop?

Spirited Away

Last week I decided that I want to re-watch the entire Charmed series (all 8 seasons) and as luck would have it, the re-runs on TNT coincided perfectly with that desire. I’m about mid-way thru season 1 and am loving the show all over again. Even tho I own the entire series on DVD in the limited edition Charmed: The Complete Series [Book of Shadows] collection

… my plan is to re-watch the entire series on TNT in 2 eps per day to stretch out my enjoyment ;)

This past weekend, I ordered an amazing prop replica of the Spirit Board used on the show and it arrived yesterday … and is SO MUCH COOLER than I though it would be. I already own the Spirit Board prop replica that was used in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 7 episode Conversations with Dead People so this Charmed Spirit Board is a welcome addition to my collection:

Trust me, I am not the sort of person who likes to play with Ouija boards but I do love these prop replicas. I also have a traditional Ouija board signed by the members of Marilyn Manson put away at my parent’s home back in Michigan … which makes it sound like I collect them or something. I actually love collecting prop replicas from my fave TV shows but it just so happens I know have all of these Ouija boards. So yeah … that’s about the extent of my exciting day yesterday. I’m not sure if there are any Charmed fans out there but I think it might be worth re-watching the series again. I had forgotten how fun the show is … and I have never re-watched the entire series in full so, I’m excited. This weekend, I’m dragging David out to go with me to see the actual house that was used in the Charmed series as the the Halliwell mansion (which is here in LA) so that I can take photos. Yes, I’m a nerd but at least I’m having fun :) Wee!!

Buffy Lives!!!

Yesterday a nice big brown box arrived from one of my fave online retailers, Things From Another World, and inside said box was something I had ordered a couple of weeks ago and have been anxiously awaiting. At last, I now have the PERFECT muse to sit on my desk to provide inspiration 24-7. Behold, the toon version of Buffy Summers, the Vampire Slayer:

Unfortunately, this fantastic Buffy statue has gone back up in price since I ordered mine but it really is a great acquisition for any BtVS fan. As you can see, I have a few little trinkets on my desk (including a Dexter Morgan action figure and a Rita Bennett-Morgan bobble head) because I like to keep it fun in my office :)

In other happy news, our friend Isaac arrived safe and sound last night and is already off taking meetings around town. I’m not sure what our plan is for tonight but I’m heading out for a haircut first ;) The weekend is nearly upon us … time sure flies when you are having fun :)

"[The Remake is] a very big mistake in my opinion."
Alyson Hannigan Is NOT Interested In A Whedon-less ‘Buffy’ Remake

Back in May we learned the HORRIFYING news that plans are in the works to remake Buffy the Vampire Slayer the movie WITHOUT creator Joss Whedon‘s involvement and shortly thereafter we found out what Joss himself thought about the idea. Today we are hearing from How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan (who famously played Buffy BFF Willow Rosenberg on the long running BtVS TV series) and she, too, expresses her disdain for any Buffy remake that does not include the master Joss Whedon:

There’s been talk for months now about a reboot of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. Plans are underway to relaunch it as a new movie franchise, a movie franchise with no connection to the popular television series and worse, no involvement from creator Joss Whedon. Today we had a chance to sit down with former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Alyson Hannigan. She played Buffy’s nerdy yet loveable sidekick Willow during the show’s run and for my money it was she, not Buffy, who was by far the best part of the series. Willow’s one of the biggest reasons Buffy worked as well as it did and though Hannigan has now moved on to other things (like How I Met Your Mother) it’s almost impossible to imagine any Buffy project without her. Well start imagining. We asked her about those Buffy remake plans and she seems as perturbed by the whole thing as the show’s fans. When we asked her what she thought of Buffy without Joss she said, “Yeah, and that’s a very big mistake in my opinion.” Whedon wrote both the 90s movie and ran the subsequent spin-off television show she was a part of. So it makes sense that Hannigan says, “I mean if Joss isn’t involved, it’s only the title.” And without Joss, there’s no way they’ll get her involved in it. Not even for a cameo. She says, “Not without Joss. Joss is the only reason that we would go back. I mean, it’s just ridiculous to think of that TV show without Joss. That’s just silly to me… And all the fans know that, too, so I don’t know what they’re thinking.” Hannigan’s reaction to remake echos that of former Giles Anthony Stewart Head, who, rather gleefully trashed the notion a few weeks ago HERE. Look it’s no mystery why they’re doing this. Vampires are hot and let’s face it, Twilight is basically just a watered down Buffy ripoff so why not bring back the real deal and get rich. But I’m pretty sure nobody wants it. Not the fans, not the Buffy cast, and probably not Twilight fans who are too busy swooning over Edward to notice anything else.

Finally … some reason in all of this madness. Of course the fans would be put off by this idiotic notion of remaking Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Joss Whedon but I’m very comforted by the fact that the actors themselves are just as perturbed. I love that Aly and Anthony Stewart Head are sticking by Whedon and are vehemently refusing to have anything AT ALL to do with this pitiful idea of a remake. I hope that plans for this proposed remake crash and burn, never to be heard from again. Until they are willing to work WITH Joss Whedon, I don’t think anyone at all is interested in any other scenario. I’m more intrigued by the reports that Whedon may turn his Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 comic book series into an animated web series. No Whedon, No Way! That seems to be the mantra of every single Buffy fan!!
