Last month we saw fun photos of Jared Leto out and about in Beverly Hills, CA where he was <s>accosted</s> greeted by the self-proclaimed Queen of Beverly Hills (a homeless woman who is often seen on the streets of Beverly Hills protecting celebs from photogs … for spare change). Leto and a homeless woman named Quween looked like besties when we saw them together … today we get to see new pics of Quween making a new friend. Golden Girl Betty White has a standing appointment with her physician in Beverly Hills and it looks like Quween was ready to greet her … she even wore a special shirt in Mama Betty’s honor:

Betty and Quween go way back … these ladies have met and been photographed together on many occasions. Quween takes it upon herself to “protect” the celebs from the paparazzi and she takes extra special care of Mama Betty. On the real, I love this t-shirt … I’d deffo wear it out if I had one :) Who knows, mebbe Betty and Rue McClanahan can team up with Ms. Quween and make a new group of Golden Girls … that’d be kinda hot, no?

Daytime television’s biggest night took place at The Orpheum Theatre here in Los Angeles, CA where the 2009 Daytime Emmy Awards were handed out in a lavish ceremony hosted by actress/singer Vanessa Williams. The daytime drama The Bold & The Beautiful (one of my faves) took home the big prize of Best Daytime Drama for the first time in it’s 22 year history while Christian LeBlanc, from The Young & The Restless (another of my faves), took home the aware for Best Actor. Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals at last night’s affair:

Yes, Stacy Haiduk (who plays Mary Jane Benson/Patty Williams a crazy woman who believes her dead cat is still alive after losing her mind a bit by changing her entire face in order to stalk and seduce Jack Abbott on Y&R) brought a stuffed cat with her as her date to the Daytime Emmys … but it’s okay cuz her crazy-ass character on the show made that stuffed cat a star! While there were a lot of awards handed out last night, the big enchilada went to The Bold & The Beautiful. After the jump, check out a few photos from the show itself and a few photos of some of the winners posing with their new Emmys in the press room after the awards were handed out — plus, read all about B&B’s big win which was 22 years in the making …

After 22 years on the air, “The Bold and the Beautiful” finally won its first victory as best drama series when the Daytime Emmy Awards were bestowed at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. It had been nominated for the top Emmy several times, but many award gurus believed it might never win, being a half-hour program competing against one-hour rivals. Another big shock at the Daytime Emmys was the victory by “The View” for best talk-show host, a category that has never been won by a multiple-host program over more than 35 years. Historically, there’s a strong bias in favor of single-host programs winning in the separate category as best talk-show too, but “The View” did manage to break that jinx once — in 2003 when it tied with “The Wayne Brady Show.” This year Emmy watchers were outraged that “The View” wasn’t nominated for best talk show, only reaping a bid in the host race. Its stars, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters didn’t bother to travel from New York to Los Angeles for the ceremony. “We’re accepting it on their behalf,” presenter Jennie Garth said when no one appeared at the podium to claim the statuette for best hosting. However, co-presenter and “90210″ costar Lori Loughlin warned, “We’re not giving it back!” There were lots of first-time winners at the Daytime Emmys, including Tamara Braun (”Days of Our Lives”) as best supporting actress and “Days” co-star Darin Brooks as best younger actor. Accepting his trophy, Brooks got bleeped by TV censors, then gushed, “Ooo, did I swear? I knew that was going to happen!” That “Days” reaped two acting honors surprised many Emmy watchers. The program is often shrugged off by the conservative TV industry at awards time because it skews to a young, hipster demographic. First-time champ Vincent Irizarry (”All My Children”) shared the laurels for best supporting actor with another rookie victor, Jeff Branson (”Guiding Light”), who acknowledged cancellation of his program, gasping, “72 years! I give this to all of us.” Another first-time champ was Julie Berman (”General Hospital”), who exclaimed as she claimed the younger-actress trophy, “Oh, my God! Oh, my God! This is so scary. I haven’t shaken this much since I auditioned for this part!” Among repeat winners was Christian LeBlanc (”Young and the Restless”) as best actor. Susan Haskell (”One Life to Live”) won best actress for the first time, but previously triumphed in the supporting-actress race back in 1994. “Rachael Ray” proved that its upset victory over “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” last year as best talk show (entertainment) was no fluke. After Ellen’s program won the talk-show category four years in a row, Rachael’s yakfest took its second consecutive victory … The evening included a heartfelt farewell to the canceled “Guiding Light.” Betty White introduced the video tribute, saying, ” ‘Guiding Light’ started off on radio in 1937 and, in 1952, it became the first soap opera on TV and to this day it has become the longest-running drama in TV and radio history. But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.” The ceremony included a grandly staged tribute to “Sesame Street” upon its 40th anniversary, which came at a curious time in its awards history. For decades, “Sesame Street” so dominated the race for best children’s show that, in 1995, TV academy spun off a separate category for pre-school children’s shows just to get it out of the way and let other juvenile programs share the gold. Ever since that new category was hatched, “Sesame Street” romped through it too — except this year when it was beaten by “Between the Lions” on Saturday night at the Creative Arts ceremony.

And here are a few of the winners:

CBS had themselves a great night … I have to say, I am very happy that B&B finally won the big prize. Having spun off from Y&R 22 years ago, B&B was the little half-hour show that could … they really brought out all the stops last year and deffo deserved their win. Congrats and love!! I just want to take a moment to remind all y’all that Ms. White is doing very well and lookin’ even better these days. While there has been much sadness in recent weeks with the loss of so many people, it’s nice to see that icons like Betty White are just going about their daily lives as spry and lively as ever. Betty, you look amazing … I love you to bits … you just go, girl! xoxo

Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, the amazing Betty White and more were all on hand at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA for the premiere of their new movie The Proposal. Sandra, who has been away from the spotlight for quite some time, is featured in the movie in a nude scene with Ryan Reynolds (OMG!!!) and — it turns out — looks pretty damn good. According to early reviews, Sandra has never looked better. Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals at last night’s premiere:

The buzz at the after party for the Hollywood premiere of “The Proposal” was all about Sandra Bullock. The fearlessly funny 44-year-old actress stars in that new romantic comedy opposite Ryan Reynolds, who is 11 years her junior, but in the uproarious nude scene the two share that everyone was talking about afterward, she looks almost like a teenager. A very fit teenager. So that was the talk of the wedding-reception-themed after party Monday, June 1, where Bullock snuggled close to her husband, Jesse James, while greeting friends like George Lopez and his wife Anna. Bullock chuckled when asked earlier about that very revealing nude sequence, and explained how she made it work. “Sadly, my first and last nude scene got laughs. I had to be very secure with that,” she said. “It was all about choreography. I mean, literally when you read it on the page you saw it and then you realized, ‘Okay, there’s no way to shoot this unless you’re buck naked.’ Then I went, ‘Go to the gym. Cut out the carbs.’ I’m glad that it made people laugh, but shooting it was odd.” Reynolds, who brought his mother Tammy to the shindig, also looked extremely fit, as did his “Proposal” co-star Malin Akerman, who wore a plunging satiny mini dress. Betty White, who gives a very funny performance in the film, was her typically sunny self, greeting co-stars Craig T. Nelson, Oscar Nunez, Michael Nouri, and the film’s director Anne Fletcher.

While I’m sure that Sandra looks amazing, I must admit that I’m more interested in finding out what Ryan looks like in this nude scene. I wonder how much of him we’ll get to see. OY! I have to stop wondering … my frail heart is bout to flutter right thru my ribcage and escape from my chest cavity. Trust me, tho, this is one movie that I deffo plan on seeing … if only to satisfy my growing curiosity. Oh, who am I kidding … any movie that has Betty White in it can absolutely count on getting my money. The Proposal opens on June 19 … will I see any of y’all at the theater for this one?

Betty White was snapped yesterday making her way out of a medical center in Beverly Hills, CA lookin’ about as faboo as can be. In the wake of Bea Arthur’s sad passing a little over a week ago and Estelle Getty’s passing last year, I think we need to cherish the Golden Girls that we have left among us. Rue McClanahan lives in NYC but isn’t seen much in public (tho, I understand she is in good health). When last we saw Betty out and about she was visiting this medical center last March. She looks great, I am assuming that her doctor visits are merely check-ups to ensure that she is doing well:

I am still very sad that we have lost half of the Golden Girls. They are such special women, I wish they could live forever. It’s really heartening to see Betty White looking so well, being so active. I hope she and Rue remain in good health for many, many years to come. Stay Golden, ladies … we love you!!

On Saturday we learned the incredibly sad news that famed actress of the stage and small screen Bea Arthur, prolly most remembered for her role as Dorothy Zbornak on the beloved TV series The Golden Girls but also for her ground-breaking role in the 1970’s as Maude on both All In The Family and her own series Maude, passed away at the age of 86 after losing her battle with cancer. Bea’s surviving co-stars Betty White and Rue McClanahan have since paid tribute to Bea in interviews and official statements. Betty issued a statement, which you can read in full here, and Rue spoke fondly of Bea in an interview with Entertainment Weekly and on The Today Show. Here are a couple photos of Bea, Betty and Rue all together at The TVLand Awards last year where the ladies accepted a pop culture award on behalf of The Golden Girls (Estelle Getty was still alive at this time last year but was too ill to attend the award show):

Here is the full text of Betty White’s statement on Bea’s passing:

“I knew it would hurt, I just didn’t know it would hurt this much.. I’m so happy that she received her Lifetime Achievement Award while she was still with us, so she could appreciate that. She was such a big part of my life.”

Here is a portion of Rue McClanahan’s interview about Bea with Entertainment Weekly:

What did you learn about acting from Bea Arthur?
What I got attached to, as an actress, was her impeccable timing. And I loved playing scenes with her. She taught me, by watching her, even back during Maude, to be outrageously courageous as a comedienne, to go out on a limb, to go farther than I’ve ever dreamed of going. [On The Golden Girls], Blanche had to say and do things that Rue found difficult. And it would always be Bea who said [deepens voice to perfectly imitate Arthur] “Oh say it! It’s funny!”

What was she like off-camera?
As a friend she was giving and loving to me. She was a very close, quiet, rather timid person, very gentle. I saw someone say something once that they didn’t mean to be a cutting remark, but it hit her wrong, and she immediately burst into tears. That was not seen very often, but those emotions were right under the surface.

It’s interesting to hear that, because I think a lot of fans just assumed she was as tough as Maude, as gruff as Dorothy.
Not just the public! When I first worked with her on Maude and came back to New York, actors descended upon me and said “Oooh! What was it like? Was it scary working with Bea Arthur?” I said “Good heavens! Anything but!” That height — she was 5′10” flat-footed — and that deep voice, and that manner she was able to summon up, made people think she would be difficult. But she wasn’t.

Any interesting quirks?
[On Golden Girls], Bea always sat in the same chair at rehearsals. Always. And she always had to have me on her right, and Betty [White] and Estelle [Getty] across the table from her. And we could not change seats from year to year, or even from week to week.

How did Bea feel about her status as a feminist icon?
Of course she was aware of it, but I tell you what meant something to Bea: Acting, performing, playing comedy and doing it well.

What did Bea mean to women of her generation? Maude and The Golden Girls both tackled a lot of issues older women face, and did so with a candor that we don’t always see in Hollywood.
I think, in both of those shows, we really did change the perception of a woman’s role. I don’t think anybody thought that it was okay to be a feminist back when she was doing Maude. And I’m sure that [show] released a lot of inhibitions. I know The Golden Girls certainly did because I’ve got fan mail saying “Thank you for allowing me to act and dress like I feel.” Because in those days, when you were over 50, you were supposed to be wearing certain types of clothes and behaving a certain way. And women were writing saying “Thank you, thank you, thank you for the freedom, for the release, for the permission.” And I’m sure Bea got that same kind of fan mail, too.

What was Bea’s lasting contribution to TV history?
What’s any great star’s lasting contribution? What’s Lucille Ball’s? I don’t know how to put answers like that into words. I suppose perhaps the thing she did the best and the most of was make people laugh.

Bea Arthur was truly an amazing woman. It will forever be one of my great regrets to have never met her in person. I remember when she did her one-woman Broadway show back in 2001 … I was not yet able to travel to NYC whenever I liked so I was not able to see her show live. It just pains me know to think that I missed out on a golden opportunity to see this genius comedic actress live on stage. Thankfully, we have reruns of The Golden Girls to remind us for all time what a truly special woman she was. After the jump, check out video of Rue McClanahan being interviewed on The Today Show …

Speaking over the phone on the Today show about their late friend and professional colleague – Arthur, 86, died early Saturday morning at her home in Los Angeles after a lengthy battle with cancer – both expressed their amazement when Arthur headlined her own, autobiographical one-woman show, 2002’s Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends. “Her emotions were just under the skin,” McClanahan, 75, said of Arthur. “You could look at her cross-eyed and she’d burst into tears.” “Golden Girls was such a happy time in our lives. But I will also remember her in her one-woman show,” said White, 87. “To see her get up on that stage and command it as a one-woman show was really mind-boggling.” “That’s because she was in control,” said McClanahan. “When she was performing she was in total control. But in her personal life … she was so sensitive.”

It is so sad to think that we know only have half of the Golden Girls left among us. May Bea Arthur rest in eternal peace.
These days, Betty can be seen in her recurring role on the CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful … additionally, Betty works tireless for the animal charities that she has championed over the years. At 87, Betty is showing no signs of slowing down. I wish her a very Happy Birthday and look forward to wishing her many more birthdays to come.

Golden Girl Betty White was honored by The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood, CA last night in order to pay tribute to her 60 year career in television. Here are a few pics of Betty (one with former co-star Mary Tyler Moore) at last night’s event:

Mary Tyler Moore and the cast of the now classic TV sitcom, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” took the stage at the TV Academy in North Hollywood. The cast was there to celebrate Betty White’s 60 year television career. That career includes White’s time on their show. “I have many memories of her and hopes for the future and many more,” said Mary Tyler Moore. “She is an eclectic lady and she is a renaissance woman,” said Edward Asner, cast member of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” “John Denver said that Tina Turner showed women how to dance in heels, you know? I said, ‘Betty White shows us how to be a star,’” said Valerie Harper, cast member of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” “I don’t know what she’s been drinking, but I’m going to get some more for her!” said Betty White. Gavin MacLeod, also of the “Mary Tyler Moore Show” declared his friend a national treasure. “There’s something about Betty White, no matter what role she plays, you’re intrigued,” said MacLeod. The Academy looked back on Betty’s long career, from her earliest work in television, to her long-running role on “The Golden Girls.” White, 84, also revealed you’ll be seeing her again this fall for another episode of “Boston Legal.” When asked if she thought she would ever be this busy at her age, White said she didn’t think she would, but she loves it. “I guess I can’t say no. Maybe that’s it. Mother always told me to say no,” said White.

While I realize that Betty White has enjoyed a very long career in TV and in movies I cannot see her anything other than Rose Nylund. Sorry, can’t happen. I remember seeing her in that horrible movie Lake Placid and when she started cussing I almost went into fits! No, she is Rose Nylund and that is that. BUT … I think it’s amazing that the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences decided to pay tribute to Betty White’s other television accomplishments. This is absolutely the way it ought to be … let’s honor the folks we love so much in life and not wait until they pass away to offer heartfelt condolences. I hope that Betty will enjoy many more years of TV stardom and that this is just the beginning of another new chapter in her life :) Much congrats and love!!!

Bea Arthur has released a statement to Usmagzine.com after the death of her Golden Girls co-star Estelle Getty: “Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her” … Saddened by the news, Betty White (who played the naïve Rose) told Us, “The only comfort at this moment is that although Estelle has moved on, Sophia will always be with us.”

Again, this is very sad news … I imagine it is very difficult for those people who knew Estelle and were close to her but I know that legions of fans are feeling the loss today as well. It’s hard to imagine the feisty Sophia Petrillo succumbing to death … I think Betty White is absolutely right in her belief that Sophia will always be with us. Her legacy will truly live on … even still, this is just really sad news.
