Betty White Gets Audience With The Queen Of Beverly Hills

"It's a Golden Girl Thing you wouldn't understand"
Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Last month we saw fun photos of Jared Leto out and about in Beverly Hills, CA where he was accosted greeted by the self-proclaimed Queen of Beverly Hills (a homeless woman who is often seen on the streets of Beverly Hills protecting celebs from photogs … for spare change). Leto and a homeless woman named Quween looked like besties when we saw them together … today we get to see new pics of Quween making a new friend. Golden Girl Betty White has a standing appointment with her physician in Beverly Hills and it looks like Quween was ready to greet her … she even wore a special shirt in Mama Betty’s honor:

Betty and Quween go way back … these ladies have met and been photographed together on many occasions. Quween takes it upon herself to “protect” the celebs from the paparazzi and she takes extra special care of Mama Betty. On the real, I love this t-shirt … I’d deffo wear it out if I had one :) Who knows, mebbe Betty and Rue McClanahan can team up with Ms. Quween and make a new group of Golden Girls … that’d be kinda hot, no?

The 2009 Daytime Emmy Awards Are Handed Out

'The Bold & The Beautiful' wins Best Daytime Drama for the first time ever!!!
Monday, August 31st, 2009

Daytime television’s biggest night took place at The Orpheum Theatre here in Los Angeles, CA where the 2009 Daytime Emmy Awards were handed out in a lavish ceremony hosted by actress/singer Vanessa Williams. The daytime drama The Bold & The Beautiful (one of my faves) took home the big prize of Best Daytime Drama for the first time in it’s 22 year history while Christian LeBlanc, from The Young & The Restless (another of my faves), took home the aware for Best Actor. Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals at last night’s affair:

Yes, Stacy Haiduk (who plays Mary Jane Benson/Patty Williams a crazy woman who believes her dead cat is still alive after losing her mind a bit by changing her entire face in order to stalk and seduce Jack Abbott on Y&R) brought a stuffed cat with her as her date to the Daytime Emmys … but it’s okay cuz her crazy-ass character on the show made that stuffed cat a star! While there were a lot of awards handed out last night, the big enchilada went to The Bold & The Beautiful. After the jump, check out a few photos from the show itself and a few photos of some of the winners posing with their new Emmys in the press room after the awards were handed out — plus, read all about B&B’s big win which was 22 years in the making …

‘The Proposal’ Premieres In Hollywood

Betty White in da HIZZZZZ
Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, the amazing Betty White and more were all on hand at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA for the premiere of their new movie The Proposal. Sandra, who has been away from the spotlight for quite some time, is featured in the movie in a nude scene with Ryan Reynolds (OMG!!!) and — it turns out — looks pretty damn good. According to early reviews, Sandra has never looked better. Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals at last night’s premiere:

The buzz at the after party for the Hollywood premiere of “The Proposal” was all about Sandra Bullock. The fearlessly funny 44-year-old actress stars in that new romantic comedy opposite Ryan Reynolds, who is 11 years her junior, but in the uproarious nude scene the two share that everyone was talking about afterward, she looks almost like a teenager. A very fit teenager. So that was the talk of the wedding-reception-themed after party Monday, June 1, where Bullock snuggled close to her husband, Jesse James, while greeting friends like George Lopez and his wife Anna. Bullock chuckled when asked earlier about that very revealing nude sequence, and explained how she made it work. “Sadly, my first and last nude scene got laughs. I had to be very secure with that,” she said. “It was all about choreography. I mean, literally when you read it on the page you saw it and then you realized, ‘Okay, there’s no way to shoot this unless you’re buck naked.’ Then I went, ‘Go to the gym. Cut out the carbs.’ I’m glad that it made people laugh, but shooting it was odd.” Reynolds, who brought his mother Tammy to the shindig, also looked extremely fit, as did his “Proposal” co-star Malin Akerman, who wore a plunging satiny mini dress. Betty White, who gives a very funny performance in the film, was her typically sunny self, greeting co-stars Craig T. Nelson, Oscar Nunez, Michael Nouri, and the film’s director Anne Fletcher.

While I’m sure that Sandra looks amazing, I must admit that I’m more interested in finding out what Ryan looks like in this nude scene. I wonder how much of him we’ll get to see. OY! I have to stop wondering … my frail heart is bout to flutter right thru my ribcage and escape from my chest cavity. Trust me, tho, this is one movie that I deffo plan on seeing … if only to satisfy my growing curiosity. Oh, who am I kidding … any movie that has Betty White in it can absolutely count on getting my money. The Proposal opens on June 19 … will I see any of y’all at the theater for this one?

Betty White Takes A Stroll In Beverly Hills

Thank you for being alive
Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Betty White was snapped yesterday making her way out of a medical center in Beverly Hills, CA lookin’ about as faboo as can be. In the wake of Bea Arthur’s sad passing a little over a week ago and Estelle Getty’s passing last year, I think we need to cherish the Golden Girls that we have left among us. Rue McClanahan lives in NYC but isn’t seen much in public (tho, I understand she is in good health). When last we saw Betty out and about she was visiting this medical center last March. She looks great, I am assuming that her doctor visits are merely check-ups to ensure that she is doing well:

I am still very sad that we have lost half of the Golden Girls. They are such special women, I wish they could live forever. It’s really heartening to see Betty White looking so well, being so active. I hope she and Rue remain in good health for many, many years to come. Stay Golden, ladies … we love you!!

Betty White & Rue McClanahan Remember Bea Arthur

Thank her for being a friend
Monday, April 27th, 2009

On Saturday we learned the incredibly sad news that famed actress of the stage and small screen Bea Arthur, prolly most remembered for her role as Dorothy Zbornak on the beloved TV series The Golden Girls but also for her ground-breaking role in the 1970’s as Maude on both All In The Family and her own series Maude, passed away at the age of 86 after losing her battle with cancer. Bea’s surviving co-stars Betty White and Rue McClanahan have since paid tribute to Bea in interviews and official statements. Betty issued a statement, which you can read in full here, and Rue spoke fondly of Bea in an interview with Entertainment Weekly and on The Today Show. Here are a couple photos of Bea, Betty and Rue all together at The TVLand Awards last year where the ladies accepted a pop culture award on behalf of The Golden Girls (Estelle Getty was still alive at this time last year but was too ill to attend the award show):

Here is the full text of Betty White’s statement on Bea’s passing:

“I knew it would hurt, I just didn’t know it would hurt this much.. I’m so happy that she received her Lifetime Achievement Award while she was still with us, so she could appreciate that. She was such a big part of my life.”

Here is a portion of Rue McClanahan’s interview about Bea with Entertainment Weekly:

What did you learn about acting from Bea Arthur?
What I got attached to, as an actress, was her impeccable timing. And I loved playing scenes with her. She taught me, by watching her, even back during Maude, to be outrageously courageous as a comedienne, to go out on a limb, to go farther than I’ve ever dreamed of going. [On The Golden Girls], Blanche had to say and do things that Rue found difficult. And it would always be Bea who said [deepens voice to perfectly imitate Arthur] “Oh say it! It’s funny!”

What was she like off-camera?
As a friend she was giving and loving to me. She was a very close, quiet, rather timid person, very gentle. I saw someone say something once that they didn’t mean to be a cutting remark, but it hit her wrong, and she immediately burst into tears. That was not seen very often, but those emotions were right under the surface.

It’s interesting to hear that, because I think a lot of fans just assumed she was as tough as Maude, as gruff as Dorothy.
Not just the public! When I first worked with her on Maude and came back to New York, actors descended upon me and said “Oooh! What was it like? Was it scary working with Bea Arthur?” I said “Good heavens! Anything but!” That height — she was 5′10” flat-footed — and that deep voice, and that manner she was able to summon up, made people think she would be difficult. But she wasn’t.

Any interesting quirks?
[On Golden Girls], Bea always sat in the same chair at rehearsals. Always. And she always had to have me on her right, and Betty [White] and Estelle [Getty] across the table from her. And we could not change seats from year to year, or even from week to week.

How did Bea feel about her status as a feminist icon?
Of course she was aware of it, but I tell you what meant something to Bea: Acting, performing, playing comedy and doing it well.

What did Bea mean to women of her generation? Maude and The Golden Girls both tackled a lot of issues older women face, and did so with a candor that we don’t always see in Hollywood.
I think, in both of those shows, we really did change the perception of a woman’s role. I don’t think anybody thought that it was okay to be a feminist back when she was doing Maude. And I’m sure that [show] released a lot of inhibitions. I know The Golden Girls certainly did because I’ve got fan mail saying “Thank you for allowing me to act and dress like I feel.” Because in those days, when you were over 50, you were supposed to be wearing certain types of clothes and behaving a certain way. And women were writing saying “Thank you, thank you, thank you for the freedom, for the release, for the permission.” And I’m sure Bea got that same kind of fan mail, too.

What was Bea’s lasting contribution to TV history?
What’s any great star’s lasting contribution? What’s Lucille Ball’s? I don’t know how to put answers like that into words. I suppose perhaps the thing she did the best and the most of was make people laugh.

Bea Arthur was truly an amazing woman. It will forever be one of my great regrets to have never met her in person. I remember when she did her one-woman Broadway show back in 2001 … I was not yet able to travel to NYC whenever I liked so I was not able to see her show live. It just pains me know to think that I missed out on a golden opportunity to see this genius comedic actress live on stage. Thankfully, we have reruns of The Golden Girls to remind us for all time what a truly special woman she was. After the jump, check out video of Rue McClanahan being interviewed on The Today Show
