Movie Review: ‘Beauty And The Beast’ In 3D

This morning I was able to attend an early screening of the 3D re-release of the now classic Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast. Without question, Beauty and the Beast is my all-time favorite animated film and I’d be so bold as to say that not only is it the best Disney animated film but it is very likely THE greatest animated film (hand drawn or otherwise) of all time. That might sound like a bit of an exaggeration but having *just* been able to watch the film on the big screen again, I was reminded of just how utterly and truly magical Disney‘s Beauty and the Beast really is.

Live Action
Emma Watson Will Play Belle In Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Beauty And The Beast’

In the wake of all the news about the 2 live action adaptation films based on Snow White comes news that plans are in the works for visionary director Guillermo del Toro to bring the classic Beauty and the Beast tale to the live-action big screen. It is being reported today that Emma Watson, who rose to fame in the Harry Potter films, has secured the lead role as Belle (ie. the Beauty). Considering del Toro is directing, I don’t expect that this new version of Beauty and the Beast will be at all similar to the animated film produced by Disney in the early 90′s.

'Beauty' and the Blu-Ray
Disney’s ‘Beauty And The Beast’ Comes to Blu-Ray

Back in July we learned that Walt Disney Animation is planning to release a 3D version of their classic animated film Beauty and the Beast in theaters here in the US next year but tomorrow the film is being released for the first time ever in high definition on Blu-Ray. Considering that Disney‘s Beauty was the first animated film to ever be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award, I think this is good news for movie fans:

On Tuesday, “Beauty and the Beast” makes its Blu-ray premiere in a three-disc set with several new documentaries. Despite its tremendous success, bringing “Beauty and the Beast” to the screen was a rocky road. Originally, British animation director Richard Purdum was hired to make a darker, non-musical version. Disney Chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg scrapped the footage after seeing the initial story reels in 1989 and summoned the team back to Los Angeles. Purdum resigned, and first-time feature directors Wise and Trousdale were brought in. Far more wrenching was the less-public challenge facing the production: Ashman, also a producer on the film, was dying of complications from AIDS but was able to keep his illness a secret for several months. He died at age 40 in March 1991, eight months before the film opened to global acclaim … “Beauty and the Beast” was the first animated film nominated for an Academy Award in the best picture category. The grand animation was paired with a Broadway-musical sensibility, thanks to the memorable, Oscar-winning music by lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken (who had collaborated on “The Little Mermaid“), and the cast had some magical vocal performances from Paige O’Hara as Belle, Robby Benson as the Beast, Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts and Jerry Orbach as Lumiere. ‘Beauty and the Beast” grossed $403 million internationally at theaters and spawned two made-for-DVD sequels, a television spinoff and a long-running Broadway musical.

IMHO, Beauty and the Beast is not only the best animated film that Disney ever made but is arguably the best animated film ever made by anyone. I was lucky enough to see the film in theaters back in the early 90′s and I remember fondly how my friend Sherri and I would see it over and over again in the years that followed. There is something magical about the film … it is a tale as old as time, yes, but the music, animation and inventive characters really set the film apart from all other animated films. For me, it’s like the Gone with the Wind of animated films. It’s been many years since I’ve watched the film but the release of this new high def version sounds like the perfect time to revisit Belle, the Beast and the rest of the gang. I’m not a big purchaser of physical DVDs anymore but this Blu-Ray is one I deff plan to add to my collection.

UPDATE: Pink reader Matt gives us the head’s up about a $10 off coupon for this Blu-Ray / DVD combo pack of Beauty and the Beast.

The 'Tale as Old as Time' gets a modern upgrade
Disney’s ‘Beauty And The Beast’ Gets The 3D Treatment

In late 1991, Walt Disney Animation released their animated version of the classic French fairytale Beauty and the Beast. Having achieved surprising success with their previous release, the animated version of the Hans Christian Andersen tale The Little Mermaid, Disney hoped their Beauty would go on to enjoy even more success … and boy did it ever. Beauty and the Beast captured the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world and has the distinction to be the first animated film in history to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture (in a time LONG before animated films were as treasured as they are now). Disney had planned to re-release Beauty and the Beast in a remastered 3D version here in US theaters earlier this year but has since decided to push back its release until 2011 … but the film, in all its new 3D glory will be released in New Zealand next month. Here is our first look at the movie trailer for the new 3D version of Disney‘s Beauty and the Beast:

Walt Disney Studios New Zealand has just released a teaser trailer for Beauty and the Beast in Disney Digital 3D. According to the trailer, it begins performing in the country August 12 in a very limited release. The 3D theatrical release of the film, which was originally slated for Valentine’s Day of 2010 in the United States, has been generating tremendous buzz to the point where it’s been suggested that The Lion King and other Disney animated classics may soon follow suit. It’s expected to open domestically in 2011, most likely during the Valentine’s Day timeframe, but no official date has yet been announced.

There was something about Beauty and the Beast that captured that Walt Disney magic in animation that had been lost for decades … The Little Mermaid had a bit of that magic but Beauty just soared into the stratosphere and reawakened our love for animated films in a way that has never died down since … and now this very special film is back! After the jump, check out the just-released movie trailer for the Beauty and the Beast 3D

The Disney Princesses Get A Sexy Makeover

Last September we saw some pretty cool artwork that re-imagined the Disney Princesses as twisted, more sinister creatures … today we get to see some of those same princesses re-imagined as sexy comic book vixens. Here are a few illustrations created by Marvel Comics artist J. Scott Campbell that feature the Disney Princesses as you’ve never seen them before:

Dang, these ladies are hawt!! This sexy side of the Princesses reminds me of the artwork we saw last October of the sexy Disney Princes. If ever the Walt Disney company wanted to win new male fans, I think they be smart to hire Campbell to help them in that endeavor. These Disney Princesses are crazy sexy … which is kinda cool, no?

Walt Disney + No Clothing = Sexy Princes?

A couple of weeks ago we got to see a few really cool photos of Walt Disney Princesses lookin’ all dark and evil and today we get to see new and interesting photos of the Disney Princes created by David Kawena. Here are a few photos of some of the Disney Princes from the animated films Aladdin, Hercules, Sleeping Beauty (Prince Philip), The Little Mermaid (Prince Eric), Tarzan and Pocahontas (John Smith) wearing nothing but their undies:

LOL!! I thought the Twisted Princesses we saw before were pretty cool … but these Sexy Princes are even better!! But wait, there’s more!! After the jump, check out another batch of Sexy Princes from Beauty and the Beast (the human Beast and Gaston), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Phoebus) and Mulan (Shang) …

Unholy alliance
Walt Disney + Marvel Comics = Twisted Princesses?

In late August pretty much everyone lost their shizz when the news came out that The Walt Disney Company was acquiring Marvel Comics for $4 billion mainly because there was a huge fear that Disney would interfere with Marvel and ruin those characters. BUT, what if the reverse actually happened and Marvel was able to influence the nice, sweet Disney characters instead. Illustrator Jeffrey Thomas envisions what Disney characters might look like if they received the Marvel Comics treatment … here are a few of the Twisted Princesses that he envisions:

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if instead of Disney’s wussification of Marvel’s characters, the tables were turned and instead Marvel turned the Disney princesses into Skrull invaders and zombies like this Dark Little Mermaid? All the images are by illustrator Jeffrey Thomas, who’s as twisted as he is brilliant. Please oh please can’t we at least get a comic book out of these images?

Aren’t these illustrations fantastic? I love mashing up characters like this … seeing the Disney Princesses in a more dark light only highlights their personalities, I think. Some of them look evil (ie. Ariel the Little Mermaid) but some of them just look more realistic and strong (ie. Pocahontas). I LOVE these illustrations. I urge you to visit Thomas‘s website HERE to see these illustrations in higher resolution … they’re really amazing. One can only hope that the marriage between Disney and Marvel might bring to fruition an alliance like this … my guess is that it won’t really happen but it’s nice to wish … upon a star.
