Mary-Kate And Ashley Olsen Set To Expand The Empire

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s empire looks poised to expand (as if it wasn’t big enough already), with the appointment of FranCois Kress to head up their couture label, The Row. Kress comes with some serious credibility and a killer resume – before joining the Olsen empire, he was Prada’s US president and CEO and before that at Bulgari Corporation and LVMH. Mary-Kate and Ashley say they are looking to expand the brand and created the new role for Kress as a means to do so. Read on for more of the deets…

Ashley Olsen & Justin Bartha Are Dunzo!

After about 2 years together, Ashley Olsen and boyfriend Justin Bartha (The Hangover, Gigli) have decided to split up. It was rumored that the couple were planning to get engaged last year but, alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Ashley and Justin are dunzo, y’all!

The Good, the Bad and the Fugly
The 2009 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute held it’s annual fashion gala, this year titled Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC last night (think of it as Celebrity Prom). Rihanna made her red carpet return, taking a stroll down the press-filled carpet for the first time since her assault back in February … she opted for a shiny black suit with floods. Madonna caused a sensation on the red carpet when she showed up with a coat hanger wrapped in an old turquoise stocking attached to her head. A who’s who of fab celebs braved the rain to attend last night’s gala and many of them looked amazing (Anne Hathaway, I’m talking to you). Here are a few pics from the red carpet arrivals and some info on the event itself:

Even with the rain, the stars shone bright Monday night at the Costume Institute’s gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Models and the hottest celebs turned out in droves to celebrate “The Model as Muse” exhibit. There was Gisele Bundchen and Chanel Iman, along with Victoria Beckham, Jessica Alba (in Michelle Obama favorite Jason Wu), Renee Zellweger (in Carolina Herrera), Eva Mendes (in Calvin Klein) and Eva Longoria, wearing Diane von Furstenberg. Chairing the event were Marc Jacobs, Kate Moss and Justin Timberlake, who rocked a pair of geek-chic specs (and girlfriend Jessica Biel). For a party celebrating models, the guest list was missing a few of the big ones. Legendary supermodels Stephanie Seymour and Naomi Campbell opted out of attending the gala – reportedly in solidarity with their date, designer Azzedine Alaia, who felt his clothes were underrepresented in the exhibit. And Christy Turlington is abroad filming. But though those notable ’90s frock stars’ absence left the party, well, a lot less super – even with Cindy Crawford in the house – fashion’s new guard arrived in full force. Heidi Klum, pregnant with her fourth child and wearing J. Mendel, promised to wear “high heels in the delivery room.” Tyra Banks wore Badgley Mischka, and Rachel Roy dressed India-born Lakshmi Menon. Kanye West helped deflect reports he’s broken up with model Amber Rose by making a show of support – literally, gripping her as she teetered and adjusting her dress. Model behavior, indeed.

It turns out that Maddy‘s funky headpiece was designed by Marc Jacobs and, apparently, is a look that was used on the runway at the Fall fashion shows this year. Unfortch, I think the contraption makes her look like a geriatric Playboy bunny. Not a good look for her. Methinks that she was heavily inspired to wear something “wacky” at last night’s Costume Institute Gala after she attended Lady GaGa‘s concert in NYC over the weekend. But, there were many other folks who looked utterly faboo at last night’s event. Vicky B. rocked her usual short skirt look (meh). But there were a lot of really great looks on the red carpet last night. After the jump, check out a few more pics from last night’s event and see who rocked and who LOLed …

Oh, the horror!
The Olsen Twins Have Their Walk Of Fame Star Defaced!

It would seem that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has not eased up on their crusade against Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen‘s love of wearing fur. The twins are protested against by the animal rights group at public events but it appears that that is no longer enough. The twins’ star (along with that of Sharon Stone) on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been defaced with the epithet FUR HAGS! … behold:

Stars of actresses Sharon Stone, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen on the Hollywood Walk of Fame have been smudged with the words “FUR HAGS!” by anti-fur campaigners. While Stone’s star, received in November 1995, was smeared with “OLD FUR HAG!”, the actress twins’ shared marker bared the words “FUR HAGS!”, reports the Daily Express. Many other celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Socialite Khloe Kardashian have previously found themselves at the centre of controversies for wearing fur. Activists supporting People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have been on their feet to discourage the use of fur and protest against the torture inflicted on animals under the name of fashion. And it has been commonplace to observe anti-fur demonstrations outside the A-listers’ signings and public appearances.

In addition to referring to the Olsens as Fur Hags, the animal rights group also refers to them as the Trollsen Twins … going so far as to set up a website where folks can play dress up with ghastly cartoon-versions of the girls on the site:

It is NOT absolutely certain that PETA had anything at all to do with the defacement of these stars on the Walk of Fame but, judging by the term FUR HAGS!, it’s likely. At the very least, the grafitti was done by a PETA/animal rights sympathizer … or mebbe just a hater.

Show their dislike of the "fur tramps" and the "fur hags from hell"
PETA Protests The ‘Influence’ Of The Olsen Twins

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were on hand for an in-store booksigning at Borders book store in Westwood, CA last night signing copies of their new book Influence for the waiting throngs of fans. Unfortch for the twins, their fans weren’t the only folks who showed up for last night’s in-store appearance. A group of protesters from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals came out for the event to protest the girls’ love of fur. Here are a couple pics of the Olsens trying to make their getaway and some of the protesters displaying their signs:

Man, PETA is showing no signs that they have any plans to let the Olsen twins off the hook for their love of fur. It’s been a few months since PETA launched their Meet the Trollsen Twins website and it looks like the anti-Olsen campaign is still going strong. I understand that the twins were targeted at their NYC in-store appearance a couple of weeks ago as well. Now, I’m not the biggest fan of the Olsens (well, I’m not much of a fan at all) but even I feel bad that the little munchkins are bearing the brunt of this anti-fur campaign alone. Meh, I’m sure I’ll get over it, tho.

Hollywood "It" Girls strip down for a new photobook
A New Crop Of Hollywood Pin-Up Girls

Photographer Timothy White has just released a new book of photos that feature various members of the Hollywood “It” Girl club posing as 1940′s style pin-up girls. The photos run the gamut from cheeky to mostly nekkid and feature ladies like Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gossip Girl), Elisha Cuthbert (24) and the Olsen twins (Full House) among others … here are a few pics from the oversized coffeetable book titled Hollywood Pinups:

These pics are some of the tamest of the bunch. There are quite a few exposed body parts (well, mostly bums) in some of the other photos featuring Kate Hudson, Angie Harmon and others. Click HERE AT YOUR OWN RISK to see some of the other photos that are featured in this book by Timothy White (be warned, the link points to a NSFW site that appears to have virus problems — if you don’t want to risk it, don’t click the source link). They are interesting photos … the Olsens look good (the dark-haired one more than the blonde one, I’m not sure which is which) even.

For the 25th time
Various Stars Come Out For ‘A Night Of Stars’

Cipriani Wall Street in NYC was the site of the 25th annual Night of Stars hosted by The Fashion Group International last night. Honoring celebs and dignitaries for achievements in fashion, beauty, architecture, entertainment AND humanitarianism, last night’s Night of Stars event brought out a Who’s Who of the celebrity elite. Here are a few pics from the arrivals last night:

Donatella Versace was honored as the “Superstar” of the evening and it looks like she attended last night’s event with Balthazar Getty (hmm … I wonder if Sienna Miller knows about this?). Jennifer Lopez looked utterly amazing in her Diva Latina finery and everyone else looked pissed off or really grouchy upon arrival. Marcia Gay Harden looked ready to whip someone’s ass … I hope folks were smart enough to not get on her bad side. Debra Messing was shutting it down last night. I mean it, she looked bananas in her black dress and her amazingly flat-ironed hair’do. Oh yeah, she killed it. Er … as a client of Rachel Zoe‘s, I felt it was necessary to get those catchphrases on the record. Yeah, I dunno if any of the honorees were worthy of whatever awards they were honored with last night but folks sure did look purdy at the event anyways.

The 2008 Fashion Oscars
So, the big to-do last night in NYC was the 2008 Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards (the “Fashion Oscars”) which took place at the New York Public Library and gives all the fabulous fashionistas license to get all gussied up in hot (and sometimes ridiculous) designs. Apparently, there were a few awards handed out as well but the real focus of the event revolves around what/who attendees were wearing. Here are a few pics of some of the fashions that made their way into the soiree last night:

Fransisco Costa of Calvin Klein took home the Womenswear Designer of the Year award on Monday night at the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards. It marks the second time the designer has won the honor, the top award in the U.S. fashion industry, winning for the first time in 2006. Tom Ford received the top award for menswear, while Tory Burch won for accessory design. “To be recognized is surreal, especially alongside Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors,” said Burch in her acceptance speech. Jacobs and Kors were also nominated. The Swarovski-sponsored awards for the three top newcomers in the same categories included Kate and Laura Mulleavy for Rodarte in womenswear, Scott Sternberg for Band of Outsiders in menswear and Philip Crangi for accessory design. Calvin Klein presented Carolina Herrera with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement award. As guests mingled during the cocktail hour outside the New York Public Library, where the awards were held, Herrera noted her key to her enduring success as a designer. “When you are in this business, you have to go on and on and on,” she said. “Life changes, and the only thing I think all the time is to make the women who wear my clothes look beautiful, comfortable, natural. It’s not about trends, or anything like that. It’s about being classic, with a modern touch.” … Style.com’s Candy Pratts Price received the Eugenia Sheppard award for her achievements as an influential fashion editor, while Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was awarded the Board of Director’s Special Tribute award for his initiatives to support the fashion industry in New York, a major economic force. Yves Saint Laurent, who passed away at the age of 71 the evening before, was on many designers’ minds. “It’s makes me feel so lonely, like it’s not a good world anymore,” said Isaac Mizrahi. Marc Jacobs, nominated in two categories this year, womenswear and accesories, said his fluttery heart dress worn by Victoria Beckham that night was an homage to Saint Laurent. “There has never been a collection that we’ve done where we haven’t thought about Yves Saint Laurent,” he said. “I think about him all of the time.”

I guess it sounds like a fun night for the folks in the fashion biz. I bet it’s fun being able to dress up in whacky fashion just because you can every once-in-a-while. The ladies always tend to amp up the drama with the stuff they choose to wear (VB is such a drag queen) but it sucks that the dudes can only wear tuxedos (white ones if you want to stand out). It’s kinda funny that with all the awards that get handed out for achievements in fashion, they can’t come up with something more interesting for men than tuxedos and suits. Anyways … congrats to the winners and props to the fashion fearless who like to play dress-up for all of us to have a chuckle with. [Source]
