#Ferguson And The Truth About Our American War Zone

Social Media At Its Best

This morning I wrote a piece about Twitter at its worst. The death of Robin Williams was and is a tragedy, and some (certainly not most) of the responses from social media are also a tragic reflection of the worst of our kind, and the worst things our technology has to offer. In light of another tragedy—the murder of Michael Brown an unarmed 18 year-old in Ferguson, Missouri by police—we can see social media at its best. A couple of years ago I interviewed the director of the Occupy Wall Street documentary #whilewewatch, and he spoke about being inspired by social media activism, which developed in direct response to the lack of real (and accurate) news coverage. I had a very similar conversation with Oscar-nominee Jehane Noujaim, who made a film about the Egyptian revolution. This happens every time there is organized protest that the authorities then turn into a “war zone.” Click inside for more.

Robin Williams’ Daughter Zelda Inspires Twitter To Change Their Policies

“We will not tolerate abuse of this nature on Twitter"

Trent has been keeping us updated with the news surrounding the death of Robin Williams, and one thing that’s been both beautiful and heartbreaking has been watching his children come forward and make all of these powerful, lovely statements about their father. When a celebrity passes away, it’s easy to focus on what their work meant to you. Like everyone else, I thought about some of my favorite Robin Williams movies (Patch Adams, World’s Greatest Dad, Jakob The Liar, Mrs. Doubtfire), I took to social media for a bit, and eventually—I went back to my life. His children cannot do that right now and I can’t (and also can) imagine what they’re going through. When Zelda Rae Williams announced that she was leaving social media for a while due to cyberbullying, I was actually surprised—I couldn’t believe that people were actually doing the things that I read. There are no words, and that part of loss—the public part—I cannot identify with. Spokespersons for Twitter are now vowing to re-evaluate some of their policies. Click inside for more.

Robin Williams’s Children Release Loving Statements In The Wake Of Their Father’s Death

"My family has always been private about our time spent together"

Yesterday we read a very sweet tribute message that Zelda Rae shared on Twitter in memory of the death of her father Robin Williams the day before. Since then, Zelda and her brothers Zak and Cody released longer personal statements in the wake of their father’s death. In response to Zelda‘s tribute, Frances Bean Cobain (the only child of Courtney Love and the late Kurt Cobain) shared a message of support for her on Twitter as well. But, very unfortunately, these personal statements opened up Zelda to horrible abuse by people who inundated her with tasteless jokes about her father’s death. As a result, Zelda has decided to quit social media “for a good long time” altogether. Sigh. The letters shared by Robin Williams‘s children, tho, are exceedingly poignant and worth reading in full below. More »

Um, Okay: ‘Lifetime’ Finds Their Missy Elliot And Timbaland For The ‘Aaliyah’ Movie

That Ish Cray Of-The-Day

Okay, I feel a little bad for all of the WTFs I’m about to throw out there because two young actors are somewhere, feeling really excited. They just got cast alongside Alexandra Shipp (who replaced Zendaya Coleman) in Lifetime‘s made-for-TV Aaliyah biopic and I know they feel great. I don’t want to rain on that parade and I am, actually, happy for those actors. I wish them the best in their careers, truly. Now. All that being said… it’s very strange to see that Chattrisse Dolabaille and Izaak Smith are going to be playing Missy Elliot and Timbaland, respectively. I sort of… cannot with this. And I need some help working through this. Click inside for more!

Bobbi Kristina Brown Celebrates The Late Whitney Houston’s Birthday On Twitter

#HappyBirthdaymommy!

Ohhh, Bobbi Kristina Brown is a tricky one. On the one hand, she’ll attack a highly-respected actor like Angela Bassett in a non-sensical, offensive Twitter-rant, and you’ll be all like, “Girl. No.” And then on the other hand, she’s a young girl who lost her mother when she was even younger, and I can’t help but feel for her. Yesterday was the late Whitney Houston‘s birthday, and her daughter took to Twitter to share some love. Click inside for more!

Here Are The Best Twitter Reactions To The Beyoncé And Nicki Minaj ‘Flawless’ Remix

The Rihanna one is the best... OMG... I cannot

Okay, our YATNB discussion forum is cancelled today for two reasons: 1.) It’s my four year-old’s birthday and I seem to have fried my brain blowing up all of these damn balloons, so I don’t even have a topic, and 2.) I can’t stop reading these effing hilarious tweets about the #FlawlessRemix. I’m not gonna lie—I’ve had the track on all day. As in all. Day. And since Trent just posted those On The Run photos, it looks like Beyoncé is taking over for a minute… which is exactly what she wanted. Damn, she’s good! Click inside for more!

Janet Jackson Dashes Fans Hopes For A New Album

Janet Speaks

Earlier this week, a sound engineer who works with Janet Jackson gave an interview where he revealed that Janet is readying the release of a new album. In response to this news, Janet posted a message on Twitter that shuts down talk of a new album. To be fair, Janet doesn’t actually say that there is no new album on the way … she only says that any news about a new project will come from her not from her sound engineer. So … at this point, we probably should cool our heels in anticipation of a new JJ album … that is, until she breaks the news herself.
