Do We Need More Safe Spaces To Talk About Depression?

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

I want to start off this week’s YATNB with another question: is there a big difference between a death by suicide, or a death by drug overdose? I found this photo of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Williams from the movie Patch Adams and, of course, it has a whole new meaning now. I got to thinking about both actors and how I didn’t feel any differently about Williams‘ passing than I did Hoffman‘s. That is to say, I thought that they were both struggling with things, and both were unable to get the help they needed to survive, in the end. Drug abuse is obviously different from depression, but I think the two are related in that we all find a means of dealing with our mental health issues—some of us turn to drugs, some of us take our own lives, some of us seek therapy, or bury ourselves in work, or cause ourselves physical harm, or cause others harm. There are, obviously, healthier ways to deal with the issues, but we all find some way to “deal.” I feel like mental health is at the beginning of so many of these problems, and I wonder if we need to keep creating more spaces to discuss this stuff. ‘Pretty Sure Even Jesus Is Tired Of Them’

Iris B FTW! And Other Awesomeness in PITNBr Comments

Another week in celebrity pop culture has gone by, and I have to admit that—while there were some laughs—things were pretty serious around these parts. None of us could have been prepared for the loss of Robin Williams, but I’m proud to be a part of a community where people spoke freely, openly, and positively about the great comedian, and where people also opened up about their own experiences with depression. And, of course, looking back at some of Wiliams’ best on-screen moments brought us some laughs. Click inside for just a few of our many awesome comments from you PITNBrs!

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

Earlier this week we celebrated the birth of one Jesse Williams. Jesseis hawt. And many of us looked through that gallery many times throughout the day (and subsequent days) without shame. I mean, it’s Jesse. There’s nothing to ashamed of because when you obsess over jesse, you know you are in good company—you are in the majority. But what happens when you find yourself attracted to the wrong celebrity at the wrong damn time? Remember those pics of Kevin Federline? Some of y’all were feelin’ him! So this week, we are all going to confess to our most embarrassing celebrity crushes. And yes, I’ll start…

‘We Shouldn’t Have To Wait Another Year For This!’

PITNBr helen FTW! And Other Awesomeness in PITNBR Comments

PITNBrs, this year I’m learning to make adjustments. You try something one way, maybe it doesn’t work out—not because it won’t ever work out, but just because you need to make some adjustments. Right now, I’m making some work-related adjustments because I’ve been getting a bit overwhelmed with a lot of new responsibilities and I feel things slipping away a bit. So. I used to post the comments of the week on Sunday nights, but Sunday nights started turning into Monday mornings, and then sometimes not at all (it’s been that kind of year for me… I’m workin’ on it), so I’m re-working my schedule a bit, and I’ll now be posting all of this awesomeness on Saturdays just to make sure that you all get the lurve you so deserve. This week, we had some really great stories that had everyone talking, so click inside for just a few of many great comments from you amazinf PITNBrs!

‘Team Bloom. Somebody Start Making Shirts NOW.’

And Other Awesomeness In PITNB Reader Comments!

It’s Monday afternoon and I am wiped out! I cannot believe how many times… I listened to Flawless yesterday, lol! Throw in a very cute four year-old’s birthday celebration last night, my computer charge finally conking out, a press day this afternoon, followed by a trip to the Apple store and yeah. Happy Monday :) But I realized I missed the comments round-up last week and we seriously need to get this back on and poppin’! This past week all that really mattered (besides #FlawlessRemix) was that Orlando Bloom got it on and poppin’ with Justin Bieber… and became a real-live superhero as a result. Beyoncé & Jay Z SLAAAAY LA With Their ‘On The Run’ Tour

The TV Guide

At long last, I finally got to experience Beyoncé and Jay Z‘s On The Run Tour in person last night and I can tell you right now, I was murdered right there in the Rose Bowl. I knew the show would be great but LORDE, I was not expecting it to be so big and so epic. Because I previously sprung for VIP tickets to see Beyoncé in concert before, I know that the ONLY way to see Bey live is up close and personal. I know I shouldn’t have done it but I sprung for the VIP tix next to the stage for the show last night and I LIVED MY LIFE like nobody’s biz. I took about a million photos and a few videos … some that you can see below. More »

On Women ‘Provoking’ Men To Violence: Can A Feminist Agree With Stephen A. Smith’s Comments?

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

Shannon, one of these guys is gonna f— you up.” Okay, we’ll get to that quote (from one of my friends, circa 2003) shortly. I don’t know how much you all have heard about this story, or whether or not any of you watch First Take (I do, and I love it) but Stephen A. Smith of ESPN got himself in some serious trouble over comments about women and men in domestic violence cases. The specific subject of his discussion with Skip Bayless was Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice (who knocked his wife out and dragged her unconscious body out of an Atlantic City casino elevator… and was suspended from a whole two NFL games as a result), but I want to open things up a bit and talk about some of the greater questions about domestic violence that this raised.

Should Celebrities Steer Clear Of Politics?

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

Last week we talked about what happens when a celebrity gets knocked up, and whether or not pregnant celebs are better off hiding their baby bumps forever. This week I’m inspired by a few stories that have been going around about celebrities speaking up about the Israeli/Palestine conflict. Before we get into it, let me just say that I know so little about the specificities of this conflict, I don’t even like bringing it up. Years ago I took a class on Sufism (which, now that I think about, I found reason to bring up recently in another post—proving that certain college courses really can have lasting impact on your life), and I remember my professor saying that she simply would not discuss Middle Eastern war or conflict with people who had not studied the history. I always appreciated that stance, and so I tread very carefully here. Click inside for more.

‘I Had Sex With Ryan Gosling And I Got WAY More Than This T-shirt’

PITNBr Kayla FTW!

As I mentioned on the fashion round-up, I was up late with my eye glued to the screen watching The Strain on FX… which is kind of hilarious since I’d already watched my screener copies earlier this month. But that is how much I am into this show. So I’m sharing our comments kind of late! (P.S. Did anyone else watch? Did you love?) Before we get to the comments, if you weren’t around this weekend you missed some serious celebration up in here. Trent has a very short wish list for his birthday this year—and he’s asking everyone to check out and donate if they can to his charity run. We also had a great time looking back at the many gifts Trent has given us over the years with PITNB, so def check out our Thank You post as well. And click inside for more!

YOU Are The New Blog: Should Pregnant Celebrities Just Go Into Hiding?

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

Don’t tell anybody (mainly Trent), but this week’s YATNB topic is partly inspired by a recent quote from Mrs. Kanye West. Just pretend I didn’t say that, and consider this point she makes: basically, she says that it sucks so much to be photographed (and attacked, and made fun of) when you’re pregs, that you might as well just forget about trying to look nice, forget about everything, and go into hiding. This got me thinking about the recent news concerning Eva Mendes getting pregnant by the entire world’s boyfriend, Ryan Gosling. She was spotted lit’rally hiding behind a bag, and Zoe Saldana may also be concealing some big news as well. Click inside for more!
