Is Everyone Being Way Too Hard On Lena Dunham?

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

So, here is one valuable lesson I learned (of many) from my time at Sarah Lawrence. One of my favorite classes was Introduction to Literary & Cultural Theory, and I remember learning the importance of seeing how, even if you didn’t agree with an idea, or a person, you can always put them into perspective. You could dislike theory itself, or a particular theory, or a particular theorist—but if they held some kind of cultural or critical significance—you should also be able to see that, and critique that too. That is to say, if people are talking about it, it can’t be insignificant or unimportant. This lesson comes to mind with Lena Dunham. So many people seem to love her, or find her completely disdainful. And I admit, before I watched Girls, I was annoyed by all of the hype. But now that she’s here, and she’s clearly making an impact, I’m struck by some of the comments I see about her. Click inside for more.

Is Television Getting Better Than The Movies?

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

Hannibal. True Detective. Mad Men. Love and Hip-Hop New York. Real Housewives… wait. Okay, I know. There is a lot of crap on television, which makes it incredibly difficult to suggest that what’s happening on television is better than what’s happening on the big screen. However, there’s also some pretty epic epicness going down, and—aside from the amazing plots and compelling characters—there’s also far more diversity. Today I posted an article about the show Empire on Fox, and I’d seen earlier that Jussie Smollett (the actor playing Jamal Lyon) came out in an interview and said that people should be looking to TV, and not the movies, for more diversity. Things are changing, and this is indeed the golden age of television. So does that mean a good TV show is now on par with (or better than) a good movie? Click inside for more!

Who Knows How To Make (And Keep) A Good New Year’s Resolution?

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

Ah, it’s that time of the year again. Now, as some of you may know, New Year’s Eve/Day is my personal favorite holiday. Drinking champagne and game planning for the next year is basically what I like to do with all of my free time, so I love the whole celebratory/rebirthing vibe that comes along with January 1 (I also looked kind of super cute that night). So I have some very vague New Year’s intentions that I’ve been thinking about, and the book I’m still reading (The Artist’s Way) has been a great guide coming in to the New Year. But I’m really, really curious to get all in everyone’s business, and hear about your New Year’s resolutions and how in the world you plan on keeping them in 2015. Click inside for more!

Praise Yeezus: Devonte Antonio Is Finally On YouTube, And 100% NSFW

I literally can't write any of the best quotes from the videos here, b/c they are too NSFW and amazing

OMG. NSFW. NSFW. NSFW. NSFChildren. NSFGod or your parents or anyone, really. Hallelujia, Devonte Antonio is finally on YouTube with his very own Confessions of a Gay Black Nerd series, and my older boys are not home, and hopefully the little one is not retaining any of this information. I’m speaking, by the way, of Devonte Antonio‘s YouTube video I Don’t Bottom… but. Lordt Jeezus, I can’t. Y’all know I have been going hard for Devonte for a little while now, and I’m ready for this to happen. I’m ready for him to get his own show on MTV, possibly titled, The Only Gay Man Not Stanning For Beyoncé But You Not Gon’ Fight Him Though. Okay, I’m not great with titles for shows, but whatever. Here’s A Safe Space To Talk About/Spoil The Eff Out Of ‘Mockingjay’

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

Okay. Let’s do this. I’ve been waiting for everyone to see this movie, since I got a chance to go to an early screening last week. FRIGGEN MOCKINGJAY. Let me tell you about my Hunger Games journey. I went to the first movie without having read any of the books. I thought, because the books were so YA popular, that I was going to be entertained, but not wildly impressed. I was wrong. I then read the first book, and was really amazed at how the story in the film seemed to stick so closely to the book. I haven’t read the other books yet, but I still LOVED Catching Fire, and I basically lost my mind/all control over my emotions when I saw Mockingjay, my favorite of the three. I really, really want to hear about everyone’s favorite moments from the film, so if you’ve seen it—or don’t mind HELLA HELLA SPOILERS— click inside for more!

PITNBr Sam, FTW!

YATNB: Which TV Characters Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

PITNB's Weekly Discussion Forum

This week we celebrated 80s TV week at Paste Magazine and it was soooo fun. As I person born in the mid-80s I didn’t have much to contribute to our Best 80 TV Shows of the 80s list, but I did get to write about one of my favorite 80s TV icons, Clair Huxtable. There’s been plenty o’ praise heaped on the Cosby Show mom (played by Phylicia Rashād) over the years, so I tried to do something a little different, and I focused on how, as a Mom/lawyer/feminist, she’s directly responsible for Alicia Florrick of The Good Wife. Obviously these are two characters who admire and I thought it’d be fun to talk about other TV characters we’re obsessed with in that “Can I be you when I grow up?” kind of way.
