Will Bey ease on down the road?
Yesterday we learned the exciting news that Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige have been added to the cast of NBC‘s The Wiz Live! in the roles of The Wiz and Evillene, respectively. Today we hear that other big names are being talked about as possible castmembers in the forthcoming televised musical production … names like Beyoncé. At this point, I’d suggest holding off on getting too excited just yet but we hear today that Bey is being courted for the role of Glinda the Good Witch in The Wiz. We already know that producers are looking for a newcomer to play the lead role of Dorothy but I can see how producers might want to get a big name like Beyoncé to add star-power to the cast. HMMM. Meet The Wiz herself and Evillene
Back in March, we learned the VERY EXCITING NEWS that NBC has selected the musical The Wiz as the production they will produce and air in December. Today we learn some really great casting news for The Wiz Live! Actress Stephanie Mills has been added to the cast as Aunt Em and singers Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige have been added to the cast in the roles of The Wiz and Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West. In the movie version of the musical, released back in 1978, The Wiz was played by Richard Pryor and Evillene was played by Mabel King. I am so damn excited by this entire production that I can barely breathe! I am LOVING this casting news so much! More »
"I assumed that nobody would ever have the open-mindedness to cast this character black"
In May we learned that Broadway actor Taye Diggs will be returning to the Great White Way this year as the next star to take the lead in the new production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. In June, we got our first look at the actor in make-up for the role. Today, courtesy of The New York Times Magazine, we get an amazing behind the scenes look at Taye as he prepares to “transform” the role when he takes over next month. NYT photographer Ryan Pfluger was given access to rehearsals for the show and he expertly captures Diggs as he prepares for the role. Taye confesses that he assumed that they would never cast a Black man as Hedwig, which is something I think many people assumed. Personally, tho, I am so excited that he is going to become the new Hedwig becuase, OMG, he is going to KILL the role. Click through the gallery to see these amazing photos from the NYT and head HERE to read the article in full.
Rock Opera, actually
Now that Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails has got himself a Grammy Award and an Oscar it looks like he is making a serious play for attaining EGOT status (ie. an artist who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award). It has been revealed that Reznor has teamed up with author Chuck Palaniuk for a rock opera / musical theater adaptation of Fight Club. It seems that news of this forthcoming project hasn’t been officially released yet but Palaniuk just can’t help but share info about the project … and then quickly delete it from social media. Should this rock opera incarnation of Fight Club be a success, it could nab Reznor a Tony Award … which would mean he would only need to win an Emmy Award to achieve EGOT status … which would be very possible should his Year Zero TV project ever come to fruition. Back in April we learned that Jake Gyllenhaal would be making his off-Broadway stage debut this summer in a new production of Little Shop of Horrors. Last night, Jakey poo made his Little Shop debut in his first of 3 performances as Seymour in the off-Broadway production staged by New York City Center Encores! For the most part, Jake is getting great reviews for his performance last night (which includes sining, obvs) but his co-stars Ellen Greene (Audrey) and Eddie Cooper (Audrey II aka the Killer Plant) are the real stars of this production. Click below to see a couple photos from last night’s show and read portions of the review by The New York Post. More »

"I've written the book and it’s a jukebox musical"
The iconic 1995 film Clueless is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year which was marked back in April by the special edition release of the soundtrack on vinyl. We learn today that Clueless is being adapted into a stage musical and that director Amy Heckerling has written the book for the show. OMG. Heckerling sat down for an interview with Entertainment Tonight to dish a bit about the forthcoming Clueless: The Musical and as you can see below, she seems very excited to help bring this “jukebox musical” to life on the musical theater stage. OMG. Clueless: The Musical … couldn’t you just die?! More »
Last month we learned that seasoned Broadway actor Taye Diggs will be starring in the current production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch this summer when he takes over the lead role from Glee actor Darren Criss who currently has the role. Today we get our first look at Taye in make-up as Hedwig as he will appear in Angry Inch starting next month. As expected, Taye all glammed up as Hedwig is a strikingly beautiful sight to see. I mean, how do you make an already beautiful man look prettier? You paint his face with bright colors and glitter, duh. Have a look. More »
'The Man Who Fell to Earth': The Musical
Last year, Michael C. Hall played Hedwig in the Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This year, MCH will play Thomas Newton in New York Theatre Workshop’s production of Lazarus … a show based on the Walter Tevis novel The Man Who Fell to Earth which, you may know, was adapted into a film that starred David Bowie. This new production of Lazarus is co-written by Bowie, will feature his music and will, undoubtedly, become one of the MUST-SEE musical theater shows of the year. OMG. Michael C. Hall and David Bowie, AM I DREAMING?! More »
The TV Guide
Last night was a really fun night for me … I got to spend time with my friend Michael (who I don’t get to see nearly as much as I’d like due to the fact that he lives in NYC) and then I got to see Jurassic World in 4DX again (I know, I’m obsessed, I can’t help it). Michael has been in San Francisco lately directing a production of Peter Pan (which I am SO BUMMED I missed, it closes this weekend) and he was passing through LA yesterday and reached out for a hang. He took me to see a musical production at the Geffen Playhouse that blew me away so entirely, I can’t even believe how lucky I was to see the show. After my time with Michael, I met up with Eileen and her friend Jacqui at the Regal Cinemas Theater at LA Live in DTLA to see Jurassic again in 4DX … and it was just as fun as the first time! More »
