Half is Better than None
Last month I got to see Johnny Marr of The Smiths live in concert during weekend 1 of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA but last night, he performed a concert in Brooklyn, NY that leaves me seething with envy. During his set, Johnny brought up a fellow member of The Smiths for a performance of classic single How Soon Is Now? Bassist Andy Rourke joined Johnny on stage last night for, essentially, what turned out to be a 50% reunion of The Smiths. Check out the embed above to see this mini-reunion and seethe with jealousy along with me.
Also, I wonder how many times Morrissey has watched this clip already ;)
The Dopeness Continues
In just a few days The Great Gatsby will hit theatres and, hopefully, we won’t be disappointed. One thing’s for sure– the entire soundtrack is streaming right now and it is all things dopeness, which we kind of expected when we first saw the tracklist. The album opens up with Jay-Z‘s song $100 Bill, but in case you haven’t gotten a chance to check it out, we have the song inside!
"I think that I am a natural chameleon"
Last week we learned officially that Kylie Mingoue is working on new music with Pharrell Williams after he spilled the deets himself in a radio interview. Today we hear from Kylie about the work she is doing with Pharrell and it sounds like we need to prepare ourselves for a new sound from Ms. M. Kylie maintains that her new music will contain the same DNA as her previous work but the sound of this new music will be different. Interesting. Click below to read Kylie‘s comments on her new music. More »
Last week we got to preview a tiny portion of Mariah Carey‘s new single with Miguel titled Beautiful and today we get our first look at the cover art for the track. If you saw the preview video that was posted last week, then the imagery on this cover art will look very familiar … and not all that exciting, IMHO. The single will be released this coming Tuesday but you can click below to check out the cover art now. More »
Throwback Thursday, Reggae Edition: Part II
Yes, folks. Here it is: the Throwback Thursday so nice we had to do it twice, lmao! Last week was, without a doubt, my favorite Throwback Thursday in the history of Throwback Thursdays (ssshhhh, don’t tell Lil Wayne, The Neptunes, P!nk, or Mariah Carey). I mean, seriously. Was it not the best? Haven’t you been listening to it all week? Aren’t you still dutty wining in front of your two year-old even though that’s a little bit inappropriate? I know you are, lmao! And because PITNBr Emily and I had waaayyyy too many songs to fit on one list, I saved some for this week. Click inside for more!
Ummm… I just got hit with some early morning awesomeness! Just a few days ago we got our first listen to Janelle Monáe‘s new track with Erykah Badu, Q.U.E.E.N. I don’t think I realized how awesome the song was until now. I mean, I liked it, but the video puts it on a whole ‘nother level. I can’t even explain all the dopeness therein, but it opens with this brilliant museum theme where Janelle and Erykah (AKA Badoula Oblongata) have been frozen as these former music revolutionaries who attempted to start the Q.U.E.E.N. movement. And then someone puts the record on and ish just starts popping off everywhere. I love it! I love Janelle‘s new look, I love all of the visuals in this, and I love when Janelle breaks it down at the end! I also love that Erykah kinda reminded me of my girl Lion Babe (who reminded me of Erykah when we first heard her). Sigh. Good times, good times.
P.S. Alan Ferguson (Solange‘s boyfriend and director of Beyoncé‘s Party) is the director.
The Time for Concern is Now
Earlier today we got some great news about Britney Spears and the work she is doing on her upcoming new album. Right now, tho, I have some news about the album that is … worrisome. As you may know, Dr. Luke (née Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald) was the executive producer who oversaw the production of Britney‘s last album Femme Fatale and by pretty much most accounts, he did a pretty good job with the album. As you may also know, will.i.am worked on a song from Femme Fatale (Big Fat Bass) and earlier this year released a new track titled Scream & Shout that features both will and Brit. In a new interview with Rolling Stone magazine, will.i.am reveals that he has been selected to oversee the production of Britney‘s upcoming new album as executive producer … which … I have to say … has me worried as Hell, y’all. 'Between the Spaces'
Now that How to Destroy Angels has completed their Spring tour they have one more treat for fans before they take a bit of a break until their next round of live performances start back up in the Fall. HTDA has released the SONOIO rework of their song The Spaces in Between as featured on their just-completed tour. As much as I love the original version of the song, I am CRAZY in love with the SONOIO rework titled Between the Spaces. Click below to give it a listen. More »
Madonna is reportedly planning the release of a tour DVD from her hugely successful 2012 MDNA World Tour and today we get a bit of a preview of that DVD release. Maddy has released the official tour backdrop video that was used during her performance of her song Gang Bang for our viewing pleasure. Those of you who saw the show in person will recognize the video featured in the embed above as the video that was splashed on the video screens during the Gang Bang performance. Depending on your tolerance level, this video might be NSFW. There is quite a bit of violent imagery even tho nothing really terrible is shown. Check out the video, see what you think. I would love to see more tour backdrop videos get released and I’m really looking forward to the tour DVD release.
... BUT Only to Perform
Last week a report came out that alleged that American Idol producers tried to secretly execute a plan that would’ve replaced current Idol judge Mariah Carey with ex-Idol judge Jennifer Lopez midseason this season due to plunging TV ratings. A few PITNB readers thought the report smelled fishy … that the report was leaked as a way to promote the show and possibly a performance appearance by J. Lo on the show. Well, wouldn’t you know it … today we learn that Lopez WILL, in fact, perform on the finale episode of American Idol in a couple of weeks. HMMMM. My friend Marc Malkin at E! News has the deets. More »
